I hadn't patronized JJ'S in a while. For years they were the only place I'd buy catfish. But I found a few other places to go and get delicious, real catfish. But JJ'S is more available so last week when the other fish restaurants were closed, I went to JJ's for a small red snapper order. (I don't dare order catfish from them, knowing they are substituting with some other form of fish.) But, I'll never order Red Snapper from them again. Worst fish I've ever tried...because it didn't taste like fish. There was no taste to it at all. Just a lot of coated seasoning. The slices of fish were so thin, there was no tasting it. I've never known red snapper to be so thinly sliced, even there years ago. It could have been any fish. This is unfortunate, because there was a time when they were the go-to fish place. If you want some good fried fish this is the place. My mother likes the fish and the macaroni and cheese not to mention the jambalaya. We usually order the catfish fillets with fries, it comes with two slices of wheat bread. They also have buffalo which was favorite back in the 80s. People still love and enjoy snapper. This location has been here for many years. Their recipes are consistently good. The wings are smaller than they used to be and they don't give out napkins, but I seem to still purchase from them. I don't know why they don't give napkins with food. They have parking in the back which is helpful if the street parking is full. Thank you for continuing to make great food. I was so excited to try this place. I was like I haven't had sole fish in a while so let me order that with some prawns. My Mother-in-law ordered snapper and okra. I gave two stars because she seemed to like the fish here. Well my sole was rubbery and way thinner than it should be. It's like they cut a piece of sole to make two pieces, that's how thin it was. I wouldn't have been mad if it was crunchy, but it was rubbery and hard to chew. I never experienced this before with sole. It didn't even taste like sole so not sure what they're using. The shrimp was halfway decent, but I was already mad about my soul so I ate two pieces and it was a wrap. The red beans and rice had absolutely no flavor, very disappointed. No onions bell peppers or seasoning. Somebody literally boiled a pot of beans with water and that's it. I wanted some dessert, but it was overkill. Way too many and I couldn't see a date on them. When it comes to stuff like this, less is more. Four flavors is plenty. Hush puppies were ok and okra. The service was friendly and the place look clean in the seating area. I wasn't happy with this meal. They need to get a cook in there for some flavor. That sole they giving out, they need to throw it out. Take it off the menu until you get some real sole. Introduced to this place by a local friend while I was visiting Oakland. Extra seasoning, extra crispy no matter what you get! I got the fish and shrimp with fries. It's def a pickup and go type of place which I didn't mind since we were on the run. I would also suggest getting the sweet potatoes cake but I did want more sweet potatoes filling. 5 stars on the food! Seasoned well, didn't feel cheated on the large plates. Equally loved the prawns and red snapper. The fires were crispy, maybe a little over salted, but hey it's fried food. Also appreciate how they gave us PLENTY of tartar sauce, ketchup and hot sauce. Now for the ambiance, 2 stars at best. Immediately as you walk in there's a sign that says No napkins or utensils. This is a very good spot for Chicken and Fish in Richmond. To avoid the wait you must call your order in. You can eat here but you are better off taking your food to go. They take credit and debit cards. Food is made fresh to order. There are other locations in the Bay Area as well. I came in two days ago and ordered the large catfish and fries and a slice of carrot cake. Tartar sauce is a must and I needed extra. They're 25 cents extra per cup. The catfish was good. The fries seemed like they were either slightly stale or cooked in old grease. The cake was nice and moist. The staff is behind the glass, but none of them were wearing masks or gloves. There was small bits of paper cooked into the fries. When I returned the order the counter man called me a liar he did not even look at the returned order just dumped it into the trash as he did so. Their customer service is non existent. I did file a complaint with the health department. I could not find a link at jjfishandchicken.com to contact JJ Fish and Chicken. YELP 100 CHALLENGE 2017 - PART 2: 1/100 In the mood for something FRIED, but couldn't make up my mind: fish or chicken?! Hubbers suggested this place since they happen to have both! A bit of a drive from home, but I didn't mind. Found parking right outside. Walked in and I immediately get hit by this powerful scent of incense. Whoa, it was a good punch! It's a good thing I didn't plan on dining in because... damn. As a newbie, it took a while to look over the menu. After a few, I decided on the 2 item combo (red snapper with 2 pieces of chicken thighs.) Hubbers went for a regular order of catfish. Both came with french fries. Also got a mac and cheese as well as a small order of seafood gumbo. I would have loved to have tried their rice and gravy, but alas, no gravy that day. No biggie. I was told it would take about 15-20 minutes since the fried stuff is cooked to order. No problem. Took a seat and studied their menu a little bit more. (Seriously, though, that incense just gave me a headache. I guess that's how they get rid of the fried smell.) Plenty of customers came in for phone orders. Walk-ins decided to wait for their order outside presumably because of that strong incense smell. (I don't know why I didn't do that!) Took a good 20 minutes for my food to be ready. Packaging was great. It took about 15 minutes to get home but the food stayed pretty hot/above warm. And what a nice surprise - I got a free side order of rice! Sahweet! Hubbers and I started off with the gumbo. I gotta say, it was one of the better gumbos I have tasted. It included a large crab claw, plenty of crab meat and sausage. The sauce was on point, so delicious. I mixed some of the broth in the rice and YUM! Mac and cheese was what it was, nothing to call home about. Tried a bit of Hubbers' catfish and that was cooked to near perfection. The seasoning on the batter was spot on. Good crunch on the outside and moist on the inside. Same with the fried chicken - however they seasoned and battered it was the exact taste I was craving. Like the fish, crispy on the outside, moist and juicy on the inside. Red snapper came off dry. I'm normally a catfish person but wanted to sorta venture out. I guess I'm stickin' to what I know next time. It is pricey, but it is plenty of food. Hubbers and I were completely satisfied. Would love to try their fries well-done next time. Yes, there will be a next time, and it'll most likely be a phone-in order. It's only fair that I review JJs after 10 years of coming here. The food is always fresh and delicious, service is friendly but not usually fast. The food takes time to come out, so I recommend calling in your order. I usually get the catfish fillet, but I recently had the jumbo shrimp and enjoyed it. I tried the wings a few weeks ago and they were okay, not enough flavor for me so I'll stick with what I like. I always ask for extra tartar sauce and hot sauce. The best combination. The area is fine, nothing crazy. Parking is never too hard to find. You can sit down to eat, but I don't really consider it a "sit down type of place" though I have eaten here once or twice. read more
