When was the last time you had a coursed meal flow with absolute perfection...so flawlessly executed and memorable that you can't stop thinking about it days after your last delectable bite? This will be a longer review, but hopefully helpful for those that share our passion and want to get an idea of the impeccable dining experience we received! Cuisine, beverage, service and ambiance were all beautifully represented in a tour de force Bordeaux wine dinner at JJ's Liberty Bistro in Ponte Vedra this last Saturday. Each course was one foodie thrill after another! On the heels of an exquisite Valentine's Day meal (reviewed on this site), we jumped at the opportunity to experience Chef Oscar Perez' masterful creations expertly paired with wines from the beautiful Château Lagrange. For wine enthusiasts, this is a historic French Third Growth Bordeaux estate in the Saint-Julien appellation, known for its powerful, complex red wines made primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. Taking an already-elevated dining experience to another level, owner JJ brought Château Lagrange's General Manager and Winemaker Matthieu Bordes along with US Manager Marie Gabriele and Importer Patrick Leveque to thoughtfully discuss each pairing from wine composition, regional history, vine age, crop yields, flavor profile, and so much more. My wife and I were fortunate to sit alongside them as we dined, talking about their passion for crafting amazing product, sharing their extensive knowledge, and exhibiting immense patience as I attempted to recall my French vocabulary! They were warm, generous and delightful company who we look forward to seeing again when next they return to JJ's. As is a hallmark of dining at JJ's, the service was elegant and fluid, timed with precision like a beautiful dance. We began with Stuffed Mussels w/Crepinette, paired with a white 2022 Les Arums De Lagrange. The white wine served as not only a palate cleanser, but also gave gorgeous floral and buttery notes that balanced the mussels perfectly. Next came a light Sheepshead Bordelaise, SO tender and sauced expertly to ensure each flavor could be tasted rather than overwhelming the palate with one versus another (wonderfully paired with a 2016 Haut Medoc De Lagrange). Pictured below, you can see how beautiful the plating was, as with all dishes that evening. One of two favorites on the night...impossible to choose...was the Squab two ways (pigeon, akin to duck), served with Dutchess potato. Rich and decadent, this was a gorgeous pairing with the Merlot-dominant 2017 Les Fiefs De Lagrange. I'll be thinking about this dish for a long, long time! Lamb Loin is a perennial favorite, perfectly cooked and sauced, accompanied by the most delicious mushroom soufflé we'd ever tasted. The flavors melded together seamlessly, enhanced further by each sip of the bold, fruit forward 2018 Chateau Lagrange St Julien. The Cabernet-dominant blend was magnificent, age worthy but very approachable now - we took home a winemaker signed bottle! Finally, we came to a very special dessert not often found outside of the France, Caneles de Bordeaux. It has a dense texture with a slight crisp exterior, and was created to use the yellow of the egg; in the past, the whites were used to filter the wines. Delectable and unique, capping off a truly memorable event! We were thrilled to learn that JJ hosts these amazing dinners monthly, so I've included a picture of the upcoming schedule. They have a tendency to sell out (as with the dinner we attended), so recommend calling the number below and booking early! I can't believe we haven't been to this quaint little place before! We have had so many friends talk about JJ's and the extensive wine selection and excellent food. I am happy to say we had a great first experience. Very personalized service, from help with our wine selection to a detailed description of the menu items and specials. Our wine, a Petite Chablis was excellent and went extremely well with my bouillabaisse and my husband's French Onion Soup and salad! We had decaf espresso's and split a coconut macron (highly recommend!) and a coffee meringue (delightful) for dessert. We were checked on often by our server and JJ the owner stopped by multiple times. After we finished lunch JJ helped us with recommendations on a few French wines we wanted to try! We visited JJ's Bistro right as they opened and were the very first to be seated. From the moment we sat down, the service was excellent--our waiter Brian was friendly, helpful, and full of great suggestions. I had already been eyeing the French Dip sandwich, and when I asked Brian about his favorite, he immediately recommended it. That sealed it--both my husband and I ordered the French Dip. I had mine with chips, and he chose a salad. We paired our meal with wine-- I had a glass of Chablis, and my husband enjoyed a Sauvignon Blanc. The food and wine together made for an absolutely exquisite meal. The atmosphere was equally impressive: cozy and intimate, with two dining rooms, and the feel of a hidden gem. The bistro also doubles as a small art gallery, with local artists' work displayed on the walls and available for purchase, which adds such a unique and creative touch to the dining experience. Plus, the attached wine shop offers an extensive selection of French wines to explore. We couldn't resist finishing off with a slice of their in-house cheesecake, which was incredible. The food was amazing! I ordered the chefs special Sea Bass. The best I have ever had. It was a little pricey at $65 but so worth it! My husband had the Coquille St Jacques he said was delicious. Deserts were another story! The Strawberry cake was to DIE for! I would go there again just for that cake light fluffy and amazing! Service was Excellent. A little back story we saw this restaurant in a post on facebook saying it was very good. We made a reservation but almost cancelled it because of a review on google. I am so glad we didn't all I can tell you is the bad reviews must be by competitors. One person gave it a 1 star because they said the wine was over priced. Well I can tell you that person must drink box wine! They sell Caymus which is one of mine and my husbands favorite wines for $70. If you by a case it goes down to $65. COSTCO sells it for $70 so how is that over priced?? Their wine selection in the restaurant store is amazing so many French wines. We had an outstanding anniversary dinner here last night. Surprisingly they weren't super busy and we were seated right away. The service was phenomenal, 4 different people waited on us. I'm sure it was due to them not being busy. The place truly feels like a cafe in France. They have LOT's of wine for retail sale. It's almost like a wine shop that happens to also have a cafe inside. We started with some awesome mussels. The sauce they sit in was delicious. We used the warm bread they provide to sop up some of the sauce. She had the salmon as an entree & I had the bouillabaisse which was excellent. We ended with a crème puffs with ice cream inside covered in chocolate sauce which was to die for. Tasty dinner at JJ's bistro. The restaurant felt like we were dining in France, and a great spot for a relaxed dinner. We started with the mussels which I would recommend. For my entree, I had the filet with lobster risotto. I ordered my steak rare, and it came out over cooked. I told the waiter and they quickly were able to bring me out a new one which was cooked perfectly. Definitely save room for desert. Great place for those looking for an intimate environment to enjoy a quiet dinner off the main drag in Jacksonville Beach. Upscale French bistro offering standard French fare with well versed and friendly staff. Tonight we went with the Parisian Trio and Salmon. Escargot was the highlight of our meal. Hearty portion of deshelled Escargot swimming in a light garlic cream sauce. Salmon entree was small and was served with a starch, vegetable, and salad. Caesar Salad was a bit too vinegary, next time I will go with the standard mixed green salad. While I didn't find the entree to be memorable I still left satisfied Sadly I didn't leave room to try one of their thirty homemade desserts although I suggest you do! My friends and I went to JJ's to celebrate September birthdays. It was my first time and we went for Saturday brunch. Our server was friendly and helpful. We shared a bottle of wine. Some of us wanted merlot and others cabernet. Our server suggested a nice blend that we all loved. If you love wine they have the largest selection I have ever seen at a restaurant. I started with a cup of French onion soup. Wow was it good! So much flavor and who doesn't love cheese;) We all enjoyed the complimentary bread and butter which went nicely with the soup. For my main entree I chose the blue crab and avocado salad. I highly recommend this dish! The blue crab was served on top of tabbouleah with a nice field green salad. White table clothes..candle light and exceptional service. Fantastic food and great friends. That is the memory of what I left JJs with. From start to finish Betty and Ben took great care of our crew of 6. I had the croquet monsieur which was served warm and the quality of the ham and real Swiss melted perfectly inside a Brioche slices was a true food experience. The wine service is 5 star and they have a bakery that makes cakes for your occasions and a full line of bakery goods. Amazing, what a wonderful experience we had During Saturday brunch. The place is a hidden gem! To begin with, they have a lovely patio outside for dinning Al fresco. As you enter, you will be amazed by a large variety of wines and a nice case full of deserts. Incredible variety as well. There are already made meals you can get such as quiche among others, finally loads of cookies. Can I say paradise? We had a wonderful meal, I ordered the delicious mussels with fries and they were superb. Our server was also outstanding. He suggested we go with the Bordeaux and even give us a tasting to ensure we liked the drink. Our party ordered a variety of dishes, but I heard from everyone that the French onion soup was out of this world. This is a gem quietly residing in Ponte Vedra. The ambience is more European than most local restaurants, fairly cozy, welcoming and easy. It is a bistro and mirrors a true bistro in France. The food is wonderful, the menu diverse enough for different tastes, all of high quality. We celebrated Valentine's Day a little early with dinner at JJs Liberty bistro. It was recently placed on Jacksonville Magazine Top 50 restaurants and since it is one of the closest to our house we decided to give it a try. For apps we had a bowl of the French Onion Soup and their Moules Provencal's. The creamy garlic herb wine sauce with the mussels was absolutely delicious. I actually used the house bread to clean the bowl even after we had finished the mussels. The French onion soup was pretty standard but definitely one of the tastier ones we've had. For dinner we got the Vegetarian Trio and the Hanger Steak with Lobster Risotto. The pesto on the vegetables was good and the mushroom risotto was tasty but the ravioli in the vegetarian trio was unfortunately pretty bland. The hanger steak was a little over cooked and it was hard to tell if their was actually lobster in the risotto which is pretty disappointing when the dish is $36. The best part of the evening was dessert where we took our waiter's suggestion and got the Banana Chocolate Cream Florentine. It was fantastic with a mix of flavors and textures that really worked well together. The problem with JJs, and a lot of other Ponte Vedra restaurants, is the prices that they charge for the location create expectations that they don't fulfill. Prices across the board were far more expensive then their online menu for this location and $2-6 more for the same dishes at their Gate Parkway location. Service was fine but not at the level you expect when you are shelling out $100s before tip even without alcohol. The food also while good is more in line with a $$ restaurant. I feel like when you are paying top dollar everything needs to be delicious and JJs just doesn't deliver that. We might check out their Gate Parkway location or order dessert to take home but until JJs either ups their game or brings their prices more in line with what they are delivering we unfortunately will not be back. read more

The atmosphere is so cozy and it's just makes you feel like you're not still in Florida the food, oh my gosh, the food, I crave their food it is some of the best French food. We have been to JJ's less than 4 or 5 times over the last few years. We decided to try it for New Year's Eve dinner (2023). First of all, if you have a hankering for a French bakery and an excellent selection of French wines, this is the place. JJ is the boss on getting French wines. They also have a restaurant which serves French cuisine. At least one of our visits over the years was sub-par - all establishments have off days. But this visit was very good. All dishes were flavorful and presentation was excellent. We had the special, Foie Gras, which really was more a Pate' than Foie Gras, but was pretty good. Then each of our party of 4 had Filet Mignon with Creamy Lobster Risotto (one of the evening's specials). The Filet was tender and prepared well. The creamy lobster Risotto was good too, but our only complaint was it had zero Lobster flavor. That was the only disappointment of the evening. The one bottle of wine was excellent ($75), and the dessert, while pricey at $16 a dessert was very good and well presented (see photos). Overall, it was a great meal, great service, and a good environment, but what seemed a little pricey for the overall experience in our opinion (over $530 for 4 people which includes dessert). It's worth a visit if you haven't tried it, it's unique. Plenty of parking. read more

Great food and wine in what is basically a wine store and bakery with a restaurant added on. Always start with the glass of Champagne. We were delighted to find our favorite Laurent-Perrier sparkling rosé. Of course French Onion soup is de rigueur. The seafood is always outstanding. I order whatever is on special. The trout is good too. I have also opted for the beef entrées which are also fantastic with a nice French red. Desserts and ice cream options are vast and worth saving room for. JJ is a high roller wine dealer. He gets the best stuff which is saying a lot in these supply chain challenged times. Practice your high school French with JJ. Maybe some outdoor music or large plants surrounding the tables would help with that issue. The food was good, though. We had never been to this JJ's location as we have always gone to the Gate location for our friends wanted to do dinner here and figured we would give it a try. When we first walked in we noticed it had a similar set up and the Gate location for it looked more messy. wine bottles just kind of all over the place but one can quickly forget about that when you walk by the deserts. We were seated in a back room which more wine bottles out and about as well as wine barrels. Our waiter quickly can over and got our drink orders and water for the table. Our group went with 2 bottles of white wine. I'm not sure which just because I'm not a big wine guy but they tasted fine to me. For an appetizer we went with the Prosciutto Wrapped Scallops cause how can not not be good know that my favorite Scallop dish is at their other location so I had faith. I will say once the scallops came out they were big, tasty, and cooked well but for only 2 at $18 it seemed pricy. We started noticing that a little more as well when going over the menu. For my entrée i went with the Steak Frites Au Poivres which is Grilled Hangar Steak Topped with Creamy Red Wine Peppercorn Sauce. Served with Hand Cut Pommes Frites cooked medium rare. I did like that they had other options from the Gate location as well as some of our favorites from there too. Our food came out within about 15 minutes and mine looked great. I really liked that this Hangar Steak was thicker then I expected it to be and it was cooked to a perfect medium rare. I was tender and very flavorful. I was also a big fan of the Pommes Frites which I was not expecting when they first came out. Ashley on the other hand just thought her Vegetarian Trio: which comes with Creamy Mushroom Risotto, 4 Cheese Ravioli Topped with Mornay Sauce, & Pesto Grilled Vegetables was just ok and at $29 it's has to be better then just OK. Said the Ravioli was good but everything else was pretty bland. I still prefer the Gate location but this location is doing some things right too and I wouldn't mine stopping in again to try something new. read more

Walking in to JJ's on a Saturday night, I was very intrigued by the store up front. Had we not had dinner reservations, I would've spent more time perusing the area. The dessert display alone looked heavenly! The dining area is designed to resemble a little French cafe, with a large scenic French mural on the wall. After looking over the menu, we decided to get the Chef's special pre fixe menu which included an amuse bouche, choice of appetizer, a garden or caesar salad, sorbet, an entree, and a dessert of your choice. For $55, we thought that the deal sounded good. They were out of the steak frites so we both opted for the blackened grouper with goat cheese risotto. The best bites for us were the amuse bouche which was a shrimp over greens with a citrus sauce, the strawberry sorbet which was so light and refreshing, and our desserts. The lobster "beignets" were very tasty but inconsistently prepared. Of the six that we had, four were mostly full of air and the other two were full of lobster. The corn and bacon relish that accompanied it was delicious however. Our fish was blackened nicely but a heavy butter sauce poured over the top took away from the fish, the risotto was bland and soupy, and the asparagus was overcooked and limp. But, on to the desserts. As we were finishing our entrees, our server brought a board over with nearly 70 options - cakes, pies, tarts, cookies, biscotti, bars, ice creams, bread pudding, creme brûlée...wow! I asked our server for a recommendation and he suggested the banana creme florentine, the chocolate raspberry dacquoise, or the strawberry grand marnier cake. The first option sounded interesting so I got that. It looked and tasted like a chocolate peanut waffle bowl filled with banana cream and topped with whipped cream, almonds, and chocolate. This, as well as the coconut macaroons (not French macarons) was excellent! I'd heard about JJ's desserts and based on what we tried, I can see myself heading back for more dessert at the store. Dessert experience: While I have had two underwhelming (food wise) experiences with dining here before (average 3 stars), I have ventured back to try one of their desserts. The experience was, yet again, below average. The dessert (Banana Cream Florentine) was overly sweet, the cream slightly congealed, and you can barely taste the banana... and to charge $13 per piece for it is quite unreasonable, IMHO. After exercise class, I stopped in to get a take out salad. Goat cheese with shrimp salad at $22. It was basically a Caesar salad; romaine, a few slices of sun-dried tomatoes and 4 grilled shrimp. Caesar dressing. Where's the goat cheese? On 3 small slices of toast. It was tasty but hard to mess up romaine. I tried to go back and look at the lunch menu as how the salad is described but I don't see the lunch menu posted. read more

Honestly I don't understand how anyone rates this below 4 stars. French cuisine uses quite a bit of butter, and this place is fine dining so if you want a meal for $10, don't come here. If you want an awesome meal and perfect service, JJ's is for you I come to JJ's bistro every time I visit home. Let me tell you why: -I love wine and JJ knows his wine. The messiness of the entryway with bottles everywhere is like a library where the book keeper knows exactly where that 2008 Napa cab sauv you've been searching for everywhere else. -The food is phenomenal. The chef can accommodate near any dietary restriction(vegan, vegetarian, etc) and you'll still have a knock-your-socks-off meal -Wine dinners! I liked this little place. The market is awesome and I think I will go back for a to- go family meal of quiche or pastries. I liked the menu options kind of upscale but something for everyone except maybe the littles. Not too many simple options for picky eaters. JJ the owner was rude and uninviting. He attempted to sell me extremely mediocre wine for an insane markup and charge an additional $30 corking fee for wine bought in his restaurant. He was unskilled in wine selection, thankfully his staff was skillful and was able to point me to a good selection. Service was amazing from both of our servers, but the appetizers were mediocre. Waited two hours for a rare steak, only to have it served well done. I asked for it to be recooked to have it served again well done on the outside and medium (ish) on the inside. Do not spend your money here. I would suggest the French pantry for actual French food. As context this was on Valentines Day and the restaurant was not busy. read more

Beware! As we sat down at our table the owner/ manager asked if he could bring us a glass of champagne. In all our years of dining we have never had the owner ask if they can bring us something and then charge us for it ($18 a glass). The trout was bad and had to be sent back. Scallops were ordered to replace it and arrived after the rest of us were finished with our meal. The duck and Sea Bass were warm, the vegetables were cold. I will say the server was great! I wish I could remember her name. She was very sweet. Also, it is a nice quiet dining experience, unlike many restaurant's these days. Once the bill arrived we saw we were charged for the bad entree and the 3, $18 glasses of Champaign. We then asked to speak with the owner. He said he would take the trout off the bill but he had to charge us for the 3 glasses of Champaign. We suggested in the future he may want to ask if you would like to order a drink rather than offer a glass of Champaign. We don't even know what kind we were served for $18 a glass! We have never had such a bad experience! I can't believe the owner of a restaurant would treat customers like that! He did bring us a complimentary glass of port. We don't drink port. We grew up in PV and are long time residents of the beaches. We will not be back. read more

We went here for our anniversary, mentioned in the reservation. They never acknowledged it! It is in a srip mall but very pleasant and cozy inside. service was just OK; the waiter stayed lost most of the time, and the food was brought by others. They have a very extensive wine list, but were out of the one from Cotes du Rhone that I picked, which resulted in us choosing two French wines by the glass. The Chateaus were not identified for the single glasses, only the region, and the waiter did not know, or would not tell, who made them. They were quite ordinary. They were also out of the lamb shank that I picked from the menu. Both of these events were inexcusable for a GOOD restaurant. Now the food. Everything started out good with the appetizers. The Lobster bisque ($13) was delicious and the Parisian Trio ($16.00) of Sautéed Escargots, Brie, & Truffle Mousse Pate was excellent. That's where the good ended. For the main course my wife ordered the Duck leg Confit ($30): the duck was dry, and the substrate on which it lay sounded very good, but was insipid in taste. I ordered the Boulibase ($31): the shrimp were overcooked, the mussels were small, but tasty; the fish was pink salmon and the soup they were in tasted "clammy" even though there were no clams included. The main courses were a big disappointment. The desserts were excellent: I have never seen so many at a single establishment. They were presented on a large chalk-type board stood by the table. My wife had the Chocolate fudge cake, and I had the Blackberry ice cream tart. Both were $16 each. The final bill was $192.75. Considering the service, lack of menu items, unsavory main courses, and the price, I would not recommend this restaurant. It might be worth trying on another night because of the atmosphere, and maybe they can do better next time. read more

We stopped by today for lunch and it was wonderful. Let's start with the bread, great baguette with yummy honey herb butter! My husband bouillabaisse and it was a perfect combination of seafood. UPDATE: Still 5 stars. Food continues to be excellent, let alone also able to support my vegan wife without issue. There's an extra effort put into the construction of dishes here that means you can always count on great food with fresh ingredients in a French style that is a delight. I've also started to buy wine here, and JJ himself is the most knowledgeable wine expert I've met. He can help you with whatever is needed - match wine to dishes, or even discuss what might work for people who are more sensitive to certain wines, and help them figure out what to try. And do yourself a favor - sign up for one of the wine theme nights. The food is amazing and the wine pairings exceptional. Hubs and I had the opportunity for a date night and decided to try JJ's Bistro in Ponte Vedra. The ambiance was quaint and I had a feeling we were the youngest couple in the small dining room. It has a vast wine selection and an impressive list of desserts. Everything we had was well seasoned and the service was attentive. We started with the crispy sweetbreads, a special that night. This was the first time we had sweetbreads and hub's response was that it was similar to chicken nuggets. Nevertheless, they were crispy and light. We also had the Parisian Trio: Escargot, brie, and pate. Each element was delicious. My main course was the hanger steak with lobster risotto. I actually like hanger steak if it's cooked right, and this certainly was the case--a perfect medium rare and tender to the bite. The risotto was so creamy and paired well with the steak. Hubs had the French onion soup and the lamb shank. His low groaning over both indicated to me that he really really enjoyed them. When our server brought out the sandwich board of desserts, it was completely unnecessary because we were stuffed. I would probably go back just to try their prolific array of desserts.
