John Ash, at the Vintner's Resort, is a beautiful and classy establishment known for their locally-sourced California cuisine and wine list! They offer indoor and outdoor dining - the outdoor space overlooks vineyards and looks lovely. It was a HOT day and we were eating during the earlybird hours when the restaurant wasn't crowded so we felt comfortable eating indoors. We ordered: HOUSEMADE PARKER HOUSE ROLLS $6 - good but not wow ENDIVE SALAD $13 - fresh, flavorful, delish! CALAMARI FRITTI  $16 - our group enjoyed this PASTA CARBONARA - $22 - good but not wow BEEF SHORT RIBS - $36 - a few in our group ordered this dish and loved it! The main courses/larger plates may be pricey, but the portions are generous and the price tag matches the quality, setting, and service. One of our favorite bars in Sonoma County with a great happy hour. Ambiance: 5 stars, super chill Bartenders: 5 stars, the drink selection is top notch. Always a good sign when a place is pouring vineyards like Williams Selyem pinot by the glass. Food: 4 stars, no complaints. Little pricey but thats due to the ambiance of the venue. Beautiful drive in- will say I was surprised by how quick the turn into the restaurant area was off the main road. Yes, it IS the beautiful grove almost immediately on your left that you wish you could drive through! The restaurant itself is very cute, tucked behind some nice trees. They have a nice outdoor seating area with those personal fires for heating (idk what they're called), a semi outdoor patio that has glass/plastic panels that can be opened, as well as indoor seating. They have a sign that says unvaccinated guests will be required to sit outside. Their bathrooms are pretty decent, 3 stalls and the sinks have fast hot water which is always nice. We got a charcuterie board and rolls to start. My friends ordered the scallops and tagliarini, while I ordered short rib. We also got drinks- they wine, I a drink called the Peachy Keen(?). My cocktail was delicious. If you sipped and aerated it, the white peach flavor bloomed in the most amazing way. If I weren't the driver I could've had two more of just that drink. The charcuterie board was also excellent. I particularly liked their goat cheese and jam/fruit spreads (I'm sorry I can't remember what exactly they were). The bread was tasty but imho could've had more flavor in the bread (or maybe just more salt)- also a little unevenly greasy. The ribs were amazing! The meat was very easy to pull apart and bite, no stringy difficult to chew pieces, and the sauce was wonderful, an occasional chunk of tomato making the bite extra tasty. The only sad thing was that I was (and still am, 3.5 hrs later) too full to eat dessert. They had some nice desserts on their menu. Still, when the check came, it came with chocolate mint truffles. Lucky for me my friends don't like mint in their chocolate so I had all three! We passed half a dozen vineyards on the way in. This happened to be our first stop because we came to Santa Rosa late afternoon, but if you wanted to do wine tastings in the area and then get a nice meal, this is totally reasonable! Drinks were 10-25 for cocktails to fine wine, the charcuterie board was 28 but other starters were in the 10-20 range, and our dishes were 20-40. Not cheap, but the ambience and food quality made it a good price. (We also saw someone celebrating their 75th birthday!) One note: it does seem like fancy enough a place to maybe care a little about dress. Their site says business casual. I don't know why they don't have more stars. This is a beautiful restaurant with delicious food and amazing cocktails, and great service! Praises for Josh for being patient and attentive with us - after wine tasting all day. We brought a bottle of wine with us to dinner, but I still ordered cocktails. The handcrafted specialty drinks all sounded wonderful and original. My friend ordered the Divine Martini and I got the Old-Fashioned. This OF was fantastic!! The only way this could've been better is if a shirtless Ryan Gosling made it for me. For appetizers, we ordered: 1/2 Dozen Hog Island Oysters - Can't go wrong with oysters. Estate Heirloom Tomato and Burrata Salad - Omg!! This was so delicious and perfectly seasoned. I wish there were more bread because 4 people shared. All the dinner entrees were beautifully plated and were all delicious. We each wanted to share but then we also didn't because I wanted to eat my entire dish myself. Haha! We ordered: Hobbs' Bacon Wrapper Pork Tenderloin - divine! Braided Boneless Prime Beef Short Ribs Braciole - my dish. It was tender and meaty and sooooo full of flavor! I want to order it again! Pan seared diver scallops and gulf prawns - my friend loved it so much he wouldn't share. Lol. He was so glad I'm allergic to shellfish. Can't go wrong with any of the desserts. We were celebrating birthdays and we got mini Creme brûlées which were creamy and marvelous! We also ordered: Bittersweet Chocolate Pot de Créme - loved this!!! Not too sweet but oh so rich and chocolatey! Dave's Gourmet Ice Cream Trio: Mexican hot cocoa, lemon bar, and peach with orange hazelnut biscotti - all the ice creams were amazing! We just had a spontaneous light dinner at John Ash in the Sunroom and ordered off of the bar menu. "Oliver", newly hired, served us and was outstanding. Regarding the famous truffle fries, thank God the Restaurant heeded the feedback of many of us locals on bringing back the original truffle fries recipe. One of the chefs who is long gone, had destroyed the classic way that John Ash has been preparing the truffle fries for years. Thank you John Ash management for responding to overwhelming feedback to revert back to the original way the truffle fries are prepared and served. We will now resume frequenting John Ash for wonderful meals because you have reinstated the original truffle fries recipe. read more

The food was remarkably poor despite the high prices: halibut overdone; steaks tough and relatively tasteless that are served with fries as a default (we substituted mashed potatoes that may well have been out of a box); desserts were tiny and the sorbet choice was not at all as described in the menu - presented as a couple teaspoons of two flavors - no berries or decorations as described. The only positive is that we'll never return. read more

My fiancé and I decided to come here on a whim. Thankfully for a Saturday evening, they had plenty of seating available even though we didn't have reservations. We started with some cocktails- a Manhattan for my fiancé which he loved and a simple double bourbon neat for me. Service was quick and super friendly. Our server checked in with us a few times but wasn't overbearing. We ordered the pork belly and beef potstickers as our appetizer and they were an absolute delight. Although there was only 3 of them, they were large and stuffed with a good amount of meat. The sauce was incredible. They were cooked perfectly, fried nicely on the bottom with a soft, doughy top. My fiancé ordered the New York steak with potatoes au gratin and ratatouille. I decided on the carbonara. The steak was cooked a nice medium-rare but wasn't seasoned very well and had minimal sear/char. The steak was served with a chili hollandaise sauce which my fiancé said made the meal. The potatoes were lovely, very thinly sliced and layered thick. They were creamy and cooked perfectly. The ratatouille was delicious. My carbonara was a little underwhelming. My pasta was over cooked which is a big turn off for me. The sauce was good, though, lots of Parmesan. The pancetta was perfect and the peas were large and fresh. When they brought it to me, it seemed like a very small portion but I was comfortably full after finishing it. We were seated outside and the setting was gorgeous. About halfway through our meal, a large party was seated nearby and there were two young girls with them. They played and ran around in the grassy area which might have annoyed some, but I was really glad to see them having so much fun and that the restaurant didn't try to make them stop. I had previously only been here for happy hours years ago. Tonight we went for a friends birthday. The ambiance was awesome. We sat out on a covered patio that had plenty of warmers. Our waiter was attentive and did great with our party of 9. The lamb chops were cooked to perfection as were the filet's ordered at the table. I've had good and bad experiences here. It's pricey and the taste of the food doesn't always match the price. When it does, it is exceptional. My wife ordered the chicken dish ($38) and was underwhelmed; she felt it was bland in flavor and even thought the chicken was overcooked. I ordered the filet mignon ($55) with whipped potatoes, brocholini and sauted mushrooms with demi glaze. It was amazing. Steak cooked to perfection. Everything on my plate was perfect. My son got the linguini and clams ($38). It had an unexpected amount of red pepper flake that made it too spicey for him. I tasted it, and it was mild to medium spice level. He is a spice beginner. Anyone who can handle more then mild would not have an issue. The service was impeccable. The table was looking out on a beautiful rose garden in the foreground and an expansive vineyard in the background. Amazing! The bar restaurant is warm, amber and inviting with more affordable food like burgers and tacos etc if that's more your style. read more

Not a problem as it was dead and they easily sat us where I intended in the first place. Now, the joint still looks amazing and service is just as great, as per usual. I don't know WHATS up with the menu but there's literally nothing to eat. I'm not a kid going to prom so I ain't ordering medallions of beef like some Rube.... So it was sturgeon for the wife....duck for myself. I ate mine....not that it was particularly edible.... The wife's sturgeon (why in earth is the only fish offering a bottom feeder?!!)....tasted like mud.... Even the scallop appetizer tasted off and it's hard to screw up scallops. Forced to have dessert to clear our palates. I'm told there's a new chef so maybe that's the problem cuz to compare the food to Applebees might offend patrons there. read more

Friends of mine from Los Angeles were in town for the 13K marathon Napa to Sonoma. They are both physicians and very international in their tastes and interests. Without reservation I MADE a reservation for dinner this evening. It was a gross disappointment. John Ash had been inconsistent in times past but for the last few years its reputation was being rewritten one great meal at a time. I am a vegetarian. I will always remember with great fondness a Portobello en croute that was devastatingly good along with other vegetarian offerings as the seasons changed. But with the new menu there was one--ONE--item on the menu that I could have. (Sort of like Henry Ford and the "you can have whatever color you want so long as it's black".) The waitstaff was helpful and suggested that a plate of sides could be done. I also ordered Roasted Cauliflower soup which was much too spicy for me. Ice water was my constant companion. The serving size of the soup was astonishingly small served in a bowl about 5" in diameter and 1" deep. The soup didn't come anywhere near close to the top. Main course came: one of my dining companions ordered fish and the other ordered a mushroom bread which he said was good--and I also noticed that he only ate about 1/3 of it. The presentation of the fish was second rate. My plate of sides was absolutely minimal in serving size and totally unremarkable in its flavors. For the sides there was a small scoop of rice with a very small carafe of a curry veloute to pour over it, mushrooms--a minimal serving, carrots (there were four pieces each about 2" in length) and a very small serving of 6 quartered golden beets. Dessert was a total bust. I ordered an affogato. What did I get for $12.50? One small scoop of vanilla gelato placed in a small iced glass cup with a small expresso carafe on the side. The person who brought it to the table poured the warm expresso over the ice cream all at once. I sat there and watched it melt because no spoon had come with the dessert. I requested a replacement and that a spoon come on the plate and then allow me to pour the expresso on as I wanted. The waitstaff seemed somewhat perturbed at such a request but it was done. It was the sorriest excuse for an affogato that I have ever had bar none. It was barely a cut above Denny's. Seriously. By comparison I had affogato there about 6 months ago and it was stellar. STELLAR. And my coffee that I had requested before dessert came at the same time as dessert, it was lukewarm and reminiscent of Bunn-o-matic quality. No, actually, Bunn-o-matic was better. Over the past couple of years John Ash has been more consistent both in the kitchen and service. Over the past 3-4 years it was a dining experience worth repeating. Something has gone seriously awry with its new invention as John Ash at Vinarosa. What was wrong with Vintner's Inn? As a long time Sonoma County resident I finally adjusted to the name "Vintner's Inn" but Vinarosa has joined the lodging/restaurants that cater to tourists with little concern that maybe we could keep Sonoma County a little more like Sonoma County than another nouveau wine region Napa County knockoff on this side of the hill. For the price paid and lack of food quality, I'm telling my friends to find another solution. This was a very disappointing meal--which also served as an embarassment since I had unequivocally recommended John Ash. With tip--and I had no wine with dinner--my bill was $62.00. read more

Im so torn on how to rate this place. The bar is where it's at, the drinks are magical, the food is amazing, the bartenders are friendly, and the vibe is super fun. So 5 stars, right? Would be but on 2 occasions we've been there just past 9 (closing time) finishing drinks and making new friends and enjoying ourselves while the bartenders closed up and both times the manager comes over at 9:01 giving us looks like "why are you here?!" And then says something to the bartender in a low tone while looking over our direction. He was back looking again a couple minutes later and it totally killed our vibe and night. Was extremely disappointed with Easter Brunch today . Buffet style not a good idea. I like it when we sit at the table and we were serve they had selected menu for Easter and for Mother's Day. People touching the food, kids using their fingers to grab food. not healthy if you ask me and the price was outrageous. Hubby Tommy and I had another anniversary dinner here at John Ash Restaurant. We have had several amazing experiences over the years. I can't say last night's experience was as high up on the list as in previous years. Perhaps it's because all the restaurants are struggling to provide the best they can in times like this, not sure. The service was, as always, impeccable. We were seated in a table, away from the crowd, in a covered patio. The glass windows open to overlook the vineyard and veggie garden. In reviewing the menu, I see that the menu has not changed much in the past year, some of the same offerings that were on the menu for our anniversary dinners over the last two years. Perhaps it's not a time to try and be overly creative right now, not sure if that is the reason. I ordered the Wild King Salmon, served on a bed of spinach. The salmon was cooked perfectly and was so fresh and delicious. Tommy ordered the brick chicken and both of us have had that in the past here. This year's was just not up to par. One piece of his chicken was a little rubbery and the potatoes were pretty bland. We started our meal with the house made parker house rolls and the baby kale caesar salad, which was quite good. Then, knowing it was our anniversdary they brought up a tiny dessert tray of the best creme brulee you will find anywhere! That has not changed, Along with 2 small biscotti to dip in our espresso's. Tommy had already ordered the vanilla bean cheesecake with Dry Creek Peaches (well know in the Valley!) and it was superb, just simple divine! I came to this beautiful restaurant on a Monday! The outdoor patio sits right next to the beautiful vineyards, the outdoor seating was very aesthetic. My server was very attentive and helpful with the menu being it was my first time with my family. He even moved us into the indoor patio that had a heat lamp because it was cold. The Oysters were decently sized and very fresh, went great with the cocktail sauce, lime, vinaigrette. The fried calamari was solid and came with a very aromatic, flavorful, light basil dipping sauce. The kale Caesar had great flavor and croutons. The house rolls were freshly baked and were very soft and airy. It took us over an hour to receive our entrees. A bit long. I got the lamb trio and I will say that the meat was cooked perfectly, but lacked flavor, the dish was a bit underwhelming. However, the steak was alright and the pork chop was great, but on the drier side. This place would be a great place to grab a drink and share some appetizers. The main dishes didn't impress me too much. Overall, I had a good experience, service was great, view was great and ambiance was good, maybe I'll try a different menu item next time! read more

My family came here around 5pm and we had a great service while we were here. We sat on the outdoor patio area and it was pleasant and wonderful. The server were attentive and did their table touches as necessary as possible. The food was good, but not the best or out of this world. I personally got the Spaghetti Puttanesca and the Calamari Fritti. I love how they taste and just had the right texture. I would eat them again if I could. I finally got to try John Ash last night for the first time, and I can't say I was disappointed. We had a last minute reservation for a party of 12 for a work event, we were immediately seated and our drinks came out so quick. We ordered the charcuterie board, the calamari (I would drink the sauce it came with) which was absolutely to die for and the bread rolls (so much melted butter, yes please) All of the appetizers came out at once, and the waitress took her time to explain all of the cheeses and meats that were on the charcuterie board. I ordered the herb crusted lamb for dinner, which tasted amazing, and was cooked to perfection. Our main waiter of the night was constantly coming around, filling our waters, filling our wine glasses, and checking in to make sure everything was OK. I love that all of our entrées came out at exactly the same time. I ended up getting the brownie à la mode for dessert and wish I wasn't so full that I could've finished it. Yet, John Ash & Co. continues to offer excellent cuisine in a beautiful setting with a consistent dedicated staff. The food is consistently good, well thought out and presented artfully. I have hosted our office staff year end holiday dinner here for the last six years. I have always been pleased with the quality of food and service. The staff is always friendly and many who have served us in the past will come up to just say hello. This review was prompted by my witnessing an example of wonderful hospitality and creation of community. During a business meeting over a few drinks and dinner in the sunlight atrium of the bar I noticed an older woman dining by herself. Christopher the general manager was making his rounds with the patrons. With this particular diner who he seemed familiar, he took the time to sit down at her table and have an animated smiling conversation. I could sense that the diner felt part of the John Ash community. Bravo to Christopher and the John Ash team for creating an inclusive community. read more

A woman answered and said my party is too big a manager will have to book it and transferred my call. The phone rang and rang and nobody picked up and went to a generic voicemail. I left a message and never received a call back. I call back a few hours later explained the situation and got transferred again and the phone rang and rang and nobody picked up the phone. This alone signals a staffing problem at this place and sadly I will take my business elsewhere to a restaurant that answers the phone in a helpful manner and is happy to book a dinner reservation. read more

We had dinner to celebrate our anniversary at John Ash & Co. The seating was in the covered section of the restaurant and our table was near the vineyard. There was a nice gentle breeze from the vineyard that made it very relaxing. We thoroughly enjoyed an outstanding experience with great food. We began our meals with the Pork Belly and Beef Potstickers and the Endive Salad. Both of these starters were freshly made and tasted wonderful. For our entrees we had the Roasted White Sea Bass with Delta Asparagus, Wild Rice Cakes and Meyer Lemon Beurre Blanc Sauce. We also had the Venison Loin Scallopini with peas, carrots, cipollini onions and black garlic spaetzle in a lingonberry gastrique jus. Each of these dinners was served hot, fresh and the taste was outstanding. Our server, Wade, was friendly and knowledgeable. He made some very nice suggestions for wine with our meals. For our dessert we had the Cheesecake. It was very light and creamy and complimented our meals perfectly. Celebrating a birthday with a long-awaited trip to Wine Country. John Ash got my attention searching for romantic places and foods we enjoy. They have two designated dining rooms, one of which is an enclosed patio. Was not our first choice but we accepted the table. I'm sure that room is popular in the summer, especially a window seat. But was cold outside and on the patio. We witnessed one other couple flat out reject their table and moved indoors. Should have done the same but we're wussies in that department. Service here was slower than expected. The Parker House Rolls ($6) showed up soon enough but things went downhill from there. The tasting menu sounded great but they insisted on everyone (just the two us) at the table must order the tasting menu. Lost opportunity there. After a very long wait entrees arrived. My Filet Mignon ($52) was not as described. They changed up the sauce in the kitchen. Should have sent it back but it was getting late. And once again we're wussies. The Chicken ($28) was just OK. Then a complimentary desert arrived with "Happy Anniversary" written on it. Nice touch but we were celebrating a birthday. I know restaurants are still somewhat in recovery mode with staffing front and back of house. That's why we always dine early; before the hipster crowds start showing up and things get busy. Anyway, I don't recommend. One hit and lots of misses. And as for that patio, it turned out OK. They turned on a heater for us and the atmosphere out there felt more energetic than indoors. My companion and I had the chefs tasting menu. It was a very enjoyable meal and both of us would recommend our experience.

So we were seated about 8 minutes early which I really enjoyed. I also thought our waiter was pleasant. For appetizers we had the pork belly potstickers and the salmon nichettes. The pork belly was not very good and probably shouldn't be smashed. We enjoyed the five spice but the finish is a little bit greasy. We were a bit underwhelmed by the salmon spread but it was a nice one bite before the meal. I think the biggest complaint would be the wait in between the appetizers and the main entrees. It was at least 45 minutes. We commented that it was like an episode of Hell's Kitchen where the hungry diners have to wait for their meal while it's being prepared and thrown away. It was just like that. We were hungry. We ordered the portobello Wellington which was a hit and we will order again. The Ossa Buco was good and probably the best dish we ordered as far as flavor but the meat itself was just a little bit under seasoned. If you put everything in the bite then the salinity was perfect but the meat on its own lacked seasoning. We also ordered the short ribs. They were cooked perfectly and the polenta was really delicious. We also ordered the Carbonara to try. I myself found it to be a little bland but the pancetta was the star. We were underwhelmed by it. It was missing the eggy yolky sauce that we expect from a carbonara. The noodle choice was also a bit odd. Bucatini would be a better choice. So all in all. It's just okay. Not the greatest restaurant in the world. Not the worst. A few stars in the meal definitely and a few misses. At the end they shrouded us with some chocolate truffles which were very cold and rich. We really like the romantic lighting and atmosphere. read more

Good food, great ambiance! Spoiling Christmas Eve, 2024. Very dismayed ! Not with the food but the disrespect regarding our timely reservation and arrival. NOT THE FIRST TIME OF TOTAL DISMAY! We have been frequenting John Ash for 30 years entertaining clients, family, friends, and as a choice for our personal felicity due to good food and excellent ambiance. However,often disappointed in reservation management and the instructed seating staff who then must disregard details to any guest requests . It happens often and leaves a feeling of disregard regardless of timely and all advance planning by the guest . We have accepted this for 30 years, being treated nonchalantly instead of valued appreciated guests who continually pay the price for good chefs,( though overpriced). Yet, the food is consistently good, even excellent at times. As often as we frequent the restaurant, the seasonal menus are not changed enough to suit a variety instead of repeats for us, but. . . Having said that, we keep trying to get better at "fool proof"advance planning ourselves, even bringing bouquets in advance to assure added welcome for our guests. Even so, a bouquet of hydrangias was nonchalantly set in the sun and had wilted upon our arrival the same day of an early evening reservation. We could go on with more dismay of this sort. Yet, due to location to our home and the gorgeous gardens and ambiance, we have continued to pursue the guest list. IT'S OVER! We were shoved aside upon arrival on Christmas Eve,2024. With determination early on in order to prepare and avoid their past history of many disappointments, we kept calling to reserve on the Christmas eve list as we were told it wasn't ready to start booking. When it was ready, we requested a specific table for 7 guests and spoke about how to best avoid disappointment. Therefore, part of our guest group offered to check us in arriving early prior to our table requested in front of the fireplace at 5pm while we guided and transported more of our guests not as familiar with the location. We all arrived within the crowded entry at 5:00 and met with our guests who arrived specifically to check us in earlier prior to 5:00 . Yet, we were herded to an alternate table, NOT our Requested table, even though the requested table sat empty . My inquiry as to advance planning was treated non chalantly. Though I had persistently called being told the reservation list wasn't ready yet , upon arrival, we were told that they had reservations since June and even so, it was 1st come, 1st. served accomodated only by physical presence. An injured guest in our party using a cane was then requested to step up to the platform area. This was an additional reason why the table by the fire was an advance request as well as a 30 year desire to be accepted as guests at that specific table. Because it was unoccupied, we inquired regarding our advance planning efforts. THEN told, that they had people coming later for it! What happen at THAT MOMENT To The PREVIOUS RHETORIC ABOUT FIRST COME , FIRST SERVED? ! We are mostly tolerant but after 30 years overlooking with gentle understanding of business challenges, we are done with our 30 year history at JOHN ASH ! Personally, we think is he is an icon in wine Country and the chef who taught us how to make a great zabaglione! read more

Lovely ambience, low key, tasteful. Excellent service and tasty food. We will be back.

This is a fabulous location. It had good food and a great happy hour. It's lovely to sit outside in the summer!

NEW OWNERS BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Word on the street is that head chef Tom Schmidt left after 15 years of working at John Ash, Because the new owners wanted to make everything from frozen meats and canned foods/sauces! And since he didn't want to put his name on that kind of poor quality he left, so did his sue chef and head Pastry chef. This place has Plummeted into a nice Scenery with Denny's quality food. This is so sad, me and my family been going here for the last 10 years+ always was amazing. But now it's horrible. Do your self a favor and go somewhere else. I will be. read more
