John Scott's Surf Shack was a gem of a find on an overcast holiday weekend when looking for some where fresh, fun and family friendly to be outside of the house. We were in the neighborhood after looking at a few local reviews and knew we had to give them a try. The Mr and I, with our baby in tow were pleasantly surprised with how fresh the menu items that we selected were. We started off splitting a Roasted Beet and Pear salad, not one wilted green, which isn't always the easiest to come by. The only miss for me was the ratio of beets to pear, where I had less peach pieces and flavor. All in all it was a delightfully, light, crisp salad with a good amount of beets. I moved forward to the Garlic Lime Shrimp entree and the Mr got my 2nd choice option, the Shrimp Tacos. Both were presented nicely where eating with you eyes is real. The tastbuds did follow soon after enjoying every bite. :) The shrimp within both entrees were the best we have had in sometime being big, juicy and full of flavor. After that since it was a holiday weekend we opted for some dessert too. Talk about sizable slices of Tuxedo and Peanut Butter ice cream pies, that literally you can share just one super easily. The Mr opted for the Tuxedo slice since he loves chocolate. I went for the Peanut Butter, which had the bonus of a Rice Krispies crust. Why have I never thought to do that while baking...definitely something to try. Both come out looking bigger than life and not melting in any way which was great. It was amazing to see it keep it's shape all the way through slowly eating it to the end. The waitress was super sweet and attentive to our requests. The only real thing that has me omiting a stars here is the fact for a small lot they had a valet, but worse than that the fact that there was no electricity in bathroom. Oddly no windows for light, or battery operated lanterns/fake candles for light. Had to break out the cell phone flash light function to maneuver around. Totally unacceptable ;( for that prop main door to stay open. read more

I tried to call John Scott's to see if they're open around this time of year. Online it says open until 10pm. But when I call, it says "we're sorry, your call did not go through." I decided to drive over there anyway. When I arrived, the parking lot was empty and the restaurant looked closed. It's Presidents Day weekend so perhaps they are on vacation. Either way, the status needs to be updated online. Disappointed. read more

We were there for Father's Day. I've been wanting to check it out. Great location, and fantastic vibe. The service was excellent. My wife who loves Lobster Rolls was so happy to hear there was a gluten free roll. She said it was one of the best she ever had. I had the grilled Salmon and it was outstanding. The reason I didn't give 5 stars was because the cocktail pour was very weak. Usually if that happens after one I would switch to beer, but I was hoping that the Margaritas would eventually get better. But they didn't. My wife's vodka cocktail was also very weak. read more

Service: the service was very quick and reliable. Very nice waiters and kind people here. They park your car for you here because they're always busy it may be not ideal for some but you can just do it they won't rob you. You may tip the guy who parked your car, but I was already parked. It felt a little forced in my opinion. Food: the lemonade was too watery I didn't like it that much, it tastes like a basic cheap powder lemonade in my opinion. I ordered the Baja fish tacos. I was blown away by the savory taste of the fish tacos. They tasted like they just got off the boat. An amazing taste and culinary experience. Everybody the tacos was like entering a different dimension of flavor. It was an amazing taste. I loved it a lot. It came with a side of like corn salad. I thought it was OK a little spicy a little kick to it. Very good meal I approve. I love it. I love John Scott. My friend got the basic cheeseburger. My friend thought the burger was wonderful. He described it as beef. He was very happy that the burger was cooked a medium rare as he asked as many places don't cook it as so, very pleasant. My friend Josh got the fish and chips. He thought it was very good The fish and chips had a good crunch to it. He said " the fish was amazing and crispy, you can tell it was beer battered. The fries were so fresh and so delicious amazing experience. The buffalo chicken shrimp is really good my friends said so basically everyone was very happy with their meal I recommend the fish tacos I loved them! Visiting lifelong friends in the Hamptons. They recommended this restaurant for lunch. Great choice! Seated promptly in an upbeat manner. Mike, our server was friendly, made good recommendations, and seemed to genuinely inquire about our meal and if we were doing well. Quohouge was tasty, not too bready. Fish tacos were fresh tasting and loaded with fish. The corn-based slaw was refreshingly delicious. I had a lobster with drawn butter, a potato, and corn on the cob. All delicious. There were cockroaches in my food and everyone was so terrible. I had never experienced such a disgusting place. They were discriminatory towards to my out of town guests. read more

A solid fried fish shack located right off dune road. This is not the place to get a fancy hamptons cocktail or high-end seafood, but if you want a beer (or my personal favorite... a cheesy frozen vacay drink like a piña colada) and a tasty quahog and wedge salad while you listen to some live music and chill in the sun, this is a great spot. Be prepared for long lines for parking if you come in the evenings but they have valets who make it go super fast. read more

Typical fried seafood joint. Prices are on par for the area. If you're looking for a place with a water view, you'll find that here but at a distance. The only reason I took off a star is because I got a gnarly sunburn. Before being seated, the hostess mentioned that they only available seat they had was in the sun. This is a place that I have been to a couple of times when the weather is nice and we want to sit outside. The food and drinks sit at a constant mediocre, but the atmosphere is worth it...usually. We had been a couple nights ago and everything was great, we all ordered drinks at the bar and at the table. As we approached this time, the bouncer declared we were all underage while looking fresh out of high school himself. We said, no problem, our entire group was 21+, including two parents, so we were happy to show our IDs so we could gain entry. The bouncer looked at each ID with a flashlight and happily let us all in to be seated at our table for dinner. Our waitress came over to take our drinks order and got around the entire table before declaring "the bouncer told me I wasn't allowed to serve your table" and then asked to see our IDs again. Super weird, but fine here are our IDs. She then tells us they need to get the "master bouncer" to approve our IDs if we wanted to drink. Okay...go get the "master bouncer" but why wasn't this relayed to us when we were checked by the novice bouncer and why did you take our drinks orders if you were instructed not to serve us?? The master bouncer came over all imposing and angry and proceeded to bend my ID in half, almost snap it, and then angrily ask me what year I graduated high school. I answered and he rolled his eyes, bent my ID again, and then handed it back to me. If you want to snap my government ID in half I'm happy to call up the police and report it! He proceeded to do the same to everyone in our group before sulking away. I understand that underage drinking in the summer is an issue and is taken very seriously by the authorities but the way this issue was handled is absolutely ABYSMAL. The waitress came back to take our dinner orders and we told her thanks but no thanks. Not worth paying quality prices for mediocre food and drinks if you're going to treat your patrons like sh*t. If you like being interrogated like a criminal about what year you graduated high school seven times in a row while a big angry man bends your government ID in half- this is the place for you! Fun laid back atmosphere. Food is great and so is service! Lots of drink options. Cajun Calamari are a must order- lightly breaded and friend perfectly (not too chewy) the Cajun seasoning is light but enough that it can be tasted and is a fun twist on a classic. So good The New England clam chowder exceeded expectation. My boyfriend is extremely picky about chowder but tries it everywhere and was delighted to eat every drop of this. Been coming here since before 2002. The lobster roll and stuffed quahog is my go to. Best on LI. Laid back atmosphere with none of the glory glam types who go out to Montauk and Southampton. Anyone who leaves a negative review is probably high maintenance and thinks they deserve anything whenever they want. If you are looking for a chill lunch spot or after beach dinner/drinks spot this is the place. It gets packed and I actually like that they don't take reservations it's one of the only places that does this. The staff is great and like I said I've been coming here for a long time. Enjoyed the Lobster Roll with chunks of meat that could probably fill 2 rolls served back in the city. Side order of Shoestring fries were nice and crispy. Service was average and come to consider during these pandemic days where you don't get to have chatty conversations with the service. The perfect place for a cold beer on a hot day post Cupsogue. Stopped by for a beer on way home. Sat at bar. Friendly and v attentive bar staff. Love that when your beer is 3/4 done they immediately ask if you need another. Wings were great. Atmosphere made me smile. Not stuffy Hamptonite. Fun. I really hate writing negative reviews on small places like this but for the only spot on the entire road, they need to do better . Food was on par with bad hospital food. The coconut flavored food is only coated with coconut oil and thrown in a fryer. chowder fries is slop on top of pretty basic frozen shoestring fries. Service never checked on us after our food had to track the waitress down for our check 20 mins after finishing and table was cleared. and it still took her an incredibly long time to get it over to us. I get a headache every time I think of this place. As you may or may not know this is the only bar on Dune road in WHB. As so, they operate the place like they're actively trying to provide a bad experience for their customers. The service is usually bad- the bartenders always have an attitude like they're doing you a favor by serving you and your party. They have a $50 minimum for credit cards (this should be telling enough of how much management really doesn't give a f). Every surface of this place is sticky and gross. They have live music that is wayyyy too loud. You can't hear yourself think much less talk with people. The one and only good quality of this place is the location. I wish the city of WHB would allow for another bar on Dune road just so people had a choice. Larry David should strongly consider opening a spite bar next door. I've been wanting to stop by this place for two years now. The service was excellent, the beer was cold and fresh and the portions were tasty and generous. They had plenty of outdoor seating and a cool breeze flowing through on a hot day. I drank Montauk Wave Crasher IPA on tap and it was super fresh, cold and satisfying. I ordered the Firecracker Shrimp which was crispy and delicious and Calamari which was lightly breaded, tender and flavorful. The portions were so generous I couldn't even order anything else which is a shame because all of the food people ordered looked delicious. Don't come here expecting anything fancy. Basically the last old school bar left in WHB. The fish tacos are some of the best I've had. The batter has some coconut flavor to it, and the corn salsa is outstanding. Firecracker shrimp is a really big serving and well worth it, although the sauce tastes just a touch processed. Lobster roll looks good but at $39 I have yet to try it.
