It seems the staff were selective on who had to order food and who didn't (we were there for Food and drink so that didn't matter). Bouncers on power trips assaulting customers physically and verbally... grabbed a member of my party and ripped the chair out from under him and grabbed him (while complaining about being in a pandemic he was in our 6-foot radius) cursed out a woman of our group (assuming because she filmed the bouncer assaulting the member of our party). Moral of the story would not recommend we've been here many times over the years and not sure where this bouncers power trip came From but it sure ruined my outlook of this Business and I will be sure to tell all my friends with homes out East and who frequent here. read more

Let me start off by saying I love the atmosphere here. The Hamptons is known for fancy restaurants. This is a dive bar that reminds me of NYC. You have a beautiful outdoor seating area with live music at times, a large bar area and plenty of indoor dining. The drinks are pricey at $14 each, but they are strong. If you come here with 2 or more people, a buyback is usually a possibility. The food is very good, priced right, but won't blow you away. The Lobster roll is good, but for $39 you will be very disappointed. This is a great place to visit after a day at the beach. read more

Very cool place in Westhampton Beach. We stopped after our trip to Montauk Lighthouse and had some calamari, garlic shrimp and shrimp tacos. Fast friendly service, calamari was overdone but good and the garlic shrimp with rice and shrimp tacos were a hit! Fresh and tasty. We will be back! Grabbed lunch at John Scott's Surf Shack on Thursday afternoon. A mixed bag in terms of food, but isn't a bad spot to enjoy a drink when visiting Cupsogue Beach. Quality: We ordered the Blackened Shrimp Tacos and the Lobster Roll to share. The Blackened Shrimp Tacos were just okay. Filled with house slaw, field greens, pico de gallo and smoky garlic lime sauce with corn salsa on the side, they just seemed to be overloaded and leaving a muddled flavor. The Lobster Roll was better, but still had issues. That issue was certainly not the mounds of delicious lobster, which I was a big fan of. It was the pathetic piece of bread it was served on and the less than thrilling fries. Quantity: The Lobster Roll is absolutely massive and stuffed with tons of lobster. The Blackened Shrimp Tacos come with two, which is a substantial lunch. Value: $15 for the Blackened Shrimp Tacos. $32 for the Lobster Roll with Fries. Ambiance: John Scott's Surf Shack is a small bar and seafood spot overlooking the bay in Westhampton Beach. It is one of the few restaurants in the area, and it has an okay view of the water, even though it is actually quite a distance away. They have a ton of outdoor seating with a covered patio, a raised porch, and open area tables with umbrellas. It was unclear to me if they were allowing folks to eat inside yet as most folks requested outside, but it did seem like they were ready. The music was expected soft rock and the vibe was very relaxed. Crowd: Despite arriving before they opened, we weren't even the first ones. The entire outdoor seating area was filled before we finished eating and this was on a rainy weekday afternoon. Service: Sat us and took our order before they technically opened and had the food out insanely fast. They also were quick to offer a different table as it started to drizzle. Yesterday, my group was denied entry to John Scott's for their Monday wing special because "Your group doesn't spend enough money". When we arrived at 4:30 with a group of 10 people, most of whom had not attended this restaurant previously were denied entry, we were shocked and appalled. Management didn't rectify this situation and we left and spent our money elsewhere. Needless to say, being denied entry to this establishment was embarrassing for all of us. On Saturday, June 12th I went to John Scott's with a few friends to grab a few drinks and enjoy a nice summer night. I walked up to the bouncer to present my ID and the first words out of the bouncer's mouth were "put that necklace away, you're not getting in with that necklace." Confused, I asked the very large and intimidating man why that is, as I've never heard of a rule like this. For reference, I was wearing a Mezuzah (a Jewish parchment inscribed with religious text) necklace. When I asked the bouncer why this is a rule and that I've never heard of anything like this, he said, "well now you have." Very informative. A second bouncer came to back him up and intimidate me. They claim and pretend that this is just some rule of the establishment, but there were MANY girls and guys visibly wearing necklaces and chains inside. So if that is the rule, why did it not apply to them? Also, I have been here many times over many years and NOT ONCE has anyone ever said anything like this to me. Absolutely disgusted and infuriated my friends and I left. The clear and utter disrespect toward me and my religion as well as the blatant anti-semitism, nonetheless in a community full of Jewish people, seems like it borderlines a hate crime. John Scott's management and staff members: I highly recommend re-evaluating your morals and "rules". They are disgusting. Pathetic and shameful. read more

Overall, I really enjoyed this low-key restaurant. The service was quick and friendly and very "So-Cal" surfer-dude. The coconut shrimp was PHENOMENAL. The fish and chips had a giant portion but wasn't worth the $18, in my opinion. I would definitely come back for the shrimp. read more

What a scam and a disappointment. Been coming here my whole life for dinner, and more recently for the nightlife over the past few years. This year it seems John Scott's has completely sold out. Arrived at 9:45pm and waited in a cold, dark line in the parking lot for TWO HOURS and never saw one person from the line getting let in at the entrance. Yet mysteriously, people who were in line behind us magically appeared inside the bar, along with anyone who pulled up in a Porsche or Mercedes. I'm convinced the line is a scam to create the illusion of demand, meanwhile the staff will let in anyone who rolls up to the side entrance who might have a little extra to give in addition to the TWENTY DOLLAR cover. Ended up leaving at 12am after wasting 2 hours of my time on line to NOT get into a place I used to love. This is not a high end bar with ample amenities. This is not an exclusive club. This is a dive in the middle of nowhere. The only reason it gets this crowded is because it's one of about two bars in the area for a younger crowd. Save your money. Save your time. RIP John Scott's. Unfortunately, they live up to the "shack" in their name in terms of the filthiness of their bathroom, and not in their pricing. But if you're dining on Dune Road, it's probably going to cost you a pretty penny no matter where you go (well drinks down the road go for about $20 apiece). That said, they've got fairly large portions of decent grub. Anything with the fried popcorn shrimp will be tasty enough (the buffalo shrimp wrap, the firecracker shrimp app), and the fries themselves are reminiscent of McDonald's (in a good way). You're paying a bit more than it feels like you should, but if you don't like eating fried seafood in the sunshine with a beer in your hand, you've got bigger problems. read more

This restaurant has been absolutely inconsiderate to myself and my two friends. John Scott's sells cigarettes in a vending machine at this location. My two friends and I were ID'd THREE times at this location. I was treated by the staff members with negative attitude and ignorance. Apparently customers were complaining about me smoking a single cigarette and talking about my senior formal (from college), mind you my friends and I were above the legal age of 21+ and this location sold various different forms of cigarette brands. We just went to lunch or attempted to..we sat down for 20 minutes and not a single person attempted to take our order or even acknowledge our presence. After 10 min I said something to hostess who was right next to us and she said "no one took your order" I said no we still have our menus..she then came back and apologized saying it was her fault but another 10 min no one was in sight. This is mostly a review for their wing night which I've been to several times. Their wing night promo is the best around, but keep in mind that if you do have their wings, your bill has to be paid in CASH. You can get them with sauce on the side or tossed. I usually prefer on-the-side so they don't get soggy in case it takes our group a while to eat them. The fish tacos we also had were somewhat bland. The fish was beer-battered but had little texture inside of the taco. It was just all a bit mushy and without flavor. You also might have trouble parking on wing nights so make sure you get there early! read more

Where do I begin with describing our horrible experience at this dump of a bar. The main reason I am giving them 1 star, and I rarely ever come on Yelp to bash a place, is because they were very very rude to my wife and I at the door. They claimed her ID was fake, but they had no way of actually verifying anyone's ID at the door, so instead they decided to just discriminate and take the subjective BS approach. We are all 30+ year olds. Bless their hearts for thinking we looked 20 years old or younger LMFAO. It seemed to me, as well as many other folks who reviewed this place on Yelp, that if you're simply from out of state, they just won't let you in no matter what condition your ID is in or how old you CLEARLY look over the age of 21. I guess they hate outsiders and MONEY. We spoke calmly and we tried convincing the bouncer every possible way, including driving back to our house 40 min away to get my wife's passport instead, only to be told that wasn't apparently still good enough to get her in. In the end, the bouncer started repeatedly and rudely telling us we were trespassing and had to leave, after essentially ignoring all of our pleas and sound logic to let my wife in. Talk about a freaking power trip. Eventually, after having to CALL the place ourselves because the bouncer wouldn't talk to us, managed to get a hold of the manager working that night to come out and listen to our story. A much much nicer guy, but still under this crazy idea that looking at an ID was good enough to know if you're 21, but other subjective approaches like how you physically look, dress, or act, were not. In the end he offered to let us all in, but my wife couldn't drink. We regrettably went in because we were more hungry than even thirsty for alcohol at this point of the night. Food was very mediocre and poorly put together. Cheap though. Not worth taking photos and posting on Yelp that's for sure. TIP for MANAGEMENT/OWNERS: If you're reading my review and the others from disgruntled customers, and thinking about how much you hate me and the rest of us, then you clearly know NOTHING about customer service and how to run a successful bar. We are not the enemy, we are just being honest about our experience and you should actually get it through your stubborn heads and LISTEN versus get defensive about it. Also....BUY A F*$@ing ID scanner. If you really TRULY care about not letting under age kids into this bar, then take my advice and stop pretending you know how to tell a fake from a real ID for all 50 states in this country. Your ignorance and arrogance will ABSOLUTELY get this place shut down one day. Just looking around the place, I could already tell there were some people clearly not 21+ of age. read more

First off, the "teeny boppers" the owner employs to hostess out front need better training so first impression was not so good. After speaking with the owner about being seated AFTER people who came in after our group, left me feeling more frustrated but finally got seated properly. Owner asked if there was anything he could do to make the situation better. I replied that he should get us a round of drinks ( in their plastic cups ) to make up for it. His reply was he could not. Stupid response. After seating was straightened out, ordered our food & that was satisfying enough for an appetizer dinner. The Quahogs, mussels, wings, all were tasty. New England clam chowder was so so, as well as the iceberg lettuce salad. Fair to mediocre bar & dining experience at best.
