Took my wife to this place for Valentines Day..what a mistake...started out ok..the bread and oil was ok..but had to get more bread because it took forever to get our appetizers...when the appetizers FINALLY came it was pretty good...and that's all the good about this place...long wait for appetizers..longer wait for dinner..my wife kept finding rotten lettuce in her salad..which she lined up on one of the dirty dishes which we finally had to ask our less than attentive server to take away..I guess removing the stack of dirty bread dishes,oil dishes,and appetizer dishes is not in our servers job description..my wife's combo dinner of spaghetti, lasagna, and chicken parmesan looked more like a TV dinner so my wife asked our server for some parmesan cheese she said ok but never brought it..my wife also asked for a refill of iced tea as did I..my wife got hers as we were preparing to leave..I never got mine...by this time we were over the entire experience do to the service and the rotten lettuce..I would not recommend Johnny Whatever to anyone... read more

I'm not the type to leave a review, but I had to in this case. There has been a change in the menu. We came for boneless wings and ended up with chicken nuggets. I would not recommend for anyone to buy these "nuggets". I paid $15 for 10 boneless wings "nuggets". I rather go to McDonald's and buy a 20 piece for $5. 11/11 update: This was not as good a dining experience as last time. The main seating area isn't separated from the bar, which is full of avid football fans watching a big game. Sound really carries in here, and their hoots and hollering pretty much drowns everything out. We had to wait a long time for each meal course. Our server disappeared for a while, too. We had to wait a while at our table just to get bread. The entree took long enough that our server apologized. She said they weren't expecting such a big crowd and are a bit understaffed. The food was still very good. I just wish we had come on a different night. On the upside, our cheesecake slice isn't frozen this time. Although the whipped topping on it was almost as runny as pouring a creamer atop it. So, took Pop here for Father's Day and again Johnny Carino's was freaking awesome. We like to eat lunch a little late to avoid the rush, so we got there at 230 pm and sat at a high top in the bar. In honor of Father's Day, they gave us a complimentary Italian Nachos appetizer; such a nice start. After we finished our meal, they also gave my dad a certificate for 1 free meal on another day AND a certificate for a free large pizza. WHAT?! Free nachos, free pizza and a free meal.. They already have great bar deals and daily specials (like $10 steak on Wednesdays), now this?! JC's totally takes care of their customers. I had the spaghetti with meatballs and my dad had the lemon-pepper salmon, both were great. I have to say I have never had a bad meal here. Went today for lunch, quiet Sunday afternoon. 4 tables in the restaurant occupied. We were seated and we got menus and then the slow service started. I ordered a beer while others ordered ice tea and waters. Time ticks by and drinks were delivered however the beer was not - I was told that the server was waiting still from the bar. When I got the beer it had sat, you can tell that because a lot of condensation has shown up - a beer has sat waiting for delivery and the head of the beer was deflated. We were then waiting for the server to take our order. No water was refilled until we got our checks. When we finally got our orders in 15 minutes had passed from drink drop off to order. Another 35 minutes later the food arrived. My wife's was cold from sitting waiting for the others to be cooked, I got up and spoke to the server she stated there was a bridal party in the back room. No excuses, food was cold and thrown together, looked sloppy. I asked for no onions on my food and got onions. So many order errors that we just said it's not worth it. to get hit food. Watching the cooks - not chefs - cook in the back there was no urgency, no professionalism and just taking their own sweet time. I have been there before and it's been good, not great, but good. The worst restaurant I have been to in awhile. We waited half an hour to be seated and then we were assigned the worst waitress in the house. She did not offer us bread and olive oil. When she brought us our appetizer we had no silverware or plates. It took her forever to come back around to check on us for drinks or anything else. We had to bother a bus boy for whatever else we needed. To look around the room, you could find a manager standing at a table visiting with guests for twenty minutes at a time (several times same table) waitress doing the exact same thing. The restaurant was so very busy that there was no time for this kind of behavior. Needless to say that we will not be returning! Our waitress needs a lot more training or a different profession.. We sit down and the waiter came off very comfortable and chitchatting, didn't really give us a chance to look over the menu. We there a few days ago, first time and at first the place looked decent to eat but after a 40 min wait, we sat at our table, very dirty table and we should have left. We stayed and ordered. Ordered pasta rosemary chicken, a bit bland but we ate it and a spaghetti casserole, which was not tasty and very greasy. Portions are good but it didn't matter if the dishes we had were not good. We love eating at Carinos for so many reasons...fabulous spaghetti and meat sauce and scrumptious home made meatballs..the Alfredo is perfection..creamy rich hmmmm.the wedge salad..just everything on the menu is worth coming back for. They have specials at least twice a week for under $10 and Monday family specials are a feast. They always give you toasted garlic bits with olive oil and balsamic with fresh warm French bread too. I can't forget the desserts either..my fav is the moist chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream. I could go on for sure! If you're really lucky Tiffany will serve you. She's kind, fast and been there for years so she knows everything. The parking is right close next to the building, and the dress is casual family style atmosphere. We were seated close to an area that had black plastic drops hanging from the ceiling. Some of it had come loose was hanging down. It was cover with dust. There were no signs that I saw indicating this but I could have asked for another table but we were in the quietest area which a person like me who is hard of hearing, it's a better choice for conversation. After being seated with menus it took 5-10 minutes for the wait - person to come to the table. Once we ordered, though I didn't time it, it seemed to take a while for the food to reach our table. Fresh Italian rolls were very good with balsamic vinegar, olive oil roasted garlic. My wife had the Chopped Club Chicken Salad and she enjoyed it and mostly finished it. She said she would order it again. My entree was Penne pasta with Marinara sauce with Italian Sausage. I added a fresh Caprese salad ($5) which we shared. We each ate 2 tomatoes slices & 1 slice eat of fresh Mozzarella with fresh basil leaf. We enjoyed that also. As for my Pasta & sausage that was a different story. The sauce had very little seasoning & was lacking in quantity compared to the amount of pasta. The pasta should have been aldente but was slightly overcooked, in my opinion. What I liked even less was that the Penne wasn't drained enough so there was about 3/8" of water at the bottom of the bowl. The Italian Sausage was ample @ 2 links but the texture was mushy. We've eaten here twice before and both of us were happy with the food and service. read more

Sunday I hear is the Grand Opening, and a Sunday Night Football Game for the Niners and Broncos! I wouldn't want to watch the game anywhere else. I hear the Grand Opening has a bounce house for kids, ice cream, free pizza once a week for a year promo for the first 100 in line, and also have a new 51 draft beer list. This is against Famous Dave's inside Johnny Carinos. We spent over fifty dollars last week on food. They forgot my husbands coleslaw and put hot bar b que sauce all over our meat when we asked for sauce on side. I am a diabetic and can't hv bar b que sauce, and if I cd I WD not choose the spicy hot! That said, I called for a manager and was told she was busy and cd not cm to phone. Because of the mess up the girl told me I did probably get my two meals free. So today I called to speak to the manager. She was rude about their mess up, and did not like the fact that girl told me that! Instead of apologizing for the mess up on their part, she said, " I will do it this time, but it is not the "girls" place to tell u you can possibly get a free meal for it." Really??? She was rude! I told her I do not want the girl getting in trouble my she put me on hold to talk to u, but u were too busy to cm take the phone, she, the manager should HV taken the phone or called me back then. Sooooo...today she tells me cm in in 20 minutes for yr meals. I sent my husband in and almost an hour later he got his food. We were supposed to get brisket and chicken no sauce w two sides. When we got home, we opened our boxes to eat, no chicken as we requested on either plate, sauce all over our brisket again and one side missing again! Plus the brisket was cold and mostly all day on both our plates like, here u go! U want free from us this is wt u get! We HV spent a boat load of money on famous dave's here, but not any more! My husband decided to take me out today for my birthday and we went to Carinos. My husband ordered the seafood fettuccine and as he was eating it there was a maggot coming out of the Mussles gross right. So we sent the plate back and the manager did nothing and sent the waiter to tell us that it was normal a maggot coming out. sea food or not is not normal he did not offer to comp or discount for our food so we left with a bad experience my husband even went to talk to the manager and he didn't seem to care he didn't offer an apology either. Good old Johnny Carino's! Consistent wherever you go, offering good food, decent portions, excellent service, full bar and reasonable prices. Their salads are ice cold to include bowl and fork. Nice Italian dressing and so with the other options. I especially like their meat sauce on the lasagna. So goodly and yummy. I could not eat all of mine so asked for a box and, "could the kitchen put some more meat sauce on it?" And by golly George, our lunch server Emily Rene was a champ returning with my to-go box teeming with sauce. Their lunch menu is really good. Ok, after probably over a year we went here tonight but I cannot give this place a 5 stars yet, 4 is pushing it but hey. For simple reasons: the project 44 program on tv showing someone dying of cancer and his family crying over him, as well as his child... literally 5 people were crying at the bar even though we asked it to be changed. Seriously it showed videos of this kid on life support. Heart breaking.Finally it was over. We needed salt for our appetizer but we couldn't get it contact with any staff. Food was ok, but for sure WAY better than Olive Garden, I won't even go there. Olive Garden tastes exactly like hospital cafeteria food. Beers are super cheap, 24 oz therapist for 8 bucks, what a steal, hence my 4 stars. I will definitely give this place another try as Modesto is lacking in good restaurants compared to other towns across the country that I've lived in or vacationed.
