Johnny Mango is a fun neighborhood spot that really takes "World Cafe" seriously. When we came on a Friday night, it was quite busy and we had to wait to be seated. The menu is vast with a lot of vegetarian options. I would say the items are pretty hit or miss -- I ordered the pad Thai as it was one of the most popular items, but I found it to be pretty dry and bland. My friend ordered the jerk chicken and said it was delicious. My boyfriend got the burrito and said it was very plain and nothing to write home about. I would highly recommend asking the staff what their favorites are, since they are likely to steer you in the right direction. I like that they offer fresh-squeezed juices - they have a juicer at the counter that you can see them use in real time. However the juicer does look kind of dirty... Lastly, when we went, there were only two people in the kitchen and one waitress managing the entire restaurant, which made service a bit slow. I can't remember the name of this sever but she was a African American woman with glass she was absolutely horrible she was very rude and very slow we were there for 2 hours ( only like 3 tables plus us and we ordered a quesadia and rice) to get to the bathroom you had to go down to there basement and it was very sketchy all and all I think it could have been just a good bar but that's it. read more

Johnny Mango is by far my favorite restaurant in town. The ambiance is super laid back and the staff are the best. During this visit I enjoyed a Chicken Quesadilla Big Plate, which comes with the happy beans, rice, slaw and fried banana on the side. This is one of my go to meals when I visit. I'm not from Cleveland and I was a part of an animal rights activist event for most of the weekend so I was elated to hear from Johnny personally they would be open Labor Day. Wow, this place was really good! I met a friend for brunch in Ohio City, and the place we planned to go had a 45 minute wait, so we went for a walk and to see what else was open. Johnny Mango was open, and had plenty of tables at 10:30, but had filled up by the time we left. My friend sold me on the place as a Mexican restaurant, but it isn't that. The food is fresh and healthy, with creative options, and an intriguing juice bar! Because my friend had been there, I just duplicated her order - chicken and black bean quesadilla, with avocado. We got the Big Plate to try the sides. Wow. The quesadilla is stuffed, but not super cheesy, which until now, I didn't know was an option. The tortilla is cooked so that it crisps up, and looked too big to finish, but I was wrong. Sides today were Jasmine rice and the Happy Beans, which were cannelini beans today. They were so good! and a slaw that was great! I had coffee and a fizzy mango lime spritz juice that wasn't too sweet but tasted great. The food was so delicious. We had the fried tofu and vegan nachos to start with. Then we had mushroom quesadillas and a veggie wrap. So good, and very affordable. Visited Johnny Mango with family due to a recent birthday party there. I knew in advance that we would be visiting because it was to be a surprise gathering, so I had time to review the menu. Parking can be a challenge in this neighborhood, so expect that when you visit. The building that this venue is situated in is large, but the venue within the building is very small - one room. We were seated at the back of the room next to the kitchen. Our waitress was fast and attentive, but she didn't get my dinner request correct. Initially, I requested a regular margarita, which was just okay, if not a little weak. I had a second one and it was also weak. Then I drank some of my cousin's pitcher of frozen margarita and it was also weak. For dinner, I requested shrimp fried rice as it looked appetizing and a person at the table suggested it. A good while later, I was served chicken fried rice and my waitress asked if she would like me to have the kitchen make shrimp fried rice, as that is what I requested. I agreed and while everyone was eating, they asked me where my food was. About 10 minutes later, I was served shrimp fried rice along with bread and some kind of dark brown spread. Well, the dark brown spread was darn tasty and I ate all of it on the bread. Very good. The shrimp fried rice was just okay. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. The food quality was very good. My wife enjoyed her Bangkok chicken, but she didn't care for the rest of her plate. She said the chicken was delicious and I agreed. I loved the greens it was served with - those were legit. I am a little bit in a debate with myself on whether to give a 4 or 5 since I think it really depends on what you order. It can be a hit or a miss here. The space and the service have been good the two times we have been here and we actually went back a second time because I really enjoyed the food the first time. We got a burrito, a quesadilla, and nachos to share which were really good and tasty! I really recommend those and their drinks are great too. But the second time around I wanted to try something different and decided to try their Pad Thai which was a mistake, it was pretty tasteless, the texture was strange, and it was so hard for me to eat, I ended up leaving most of it on my plate unfortunately and that really messed up my experience. read more

I was happy to find a vegetarian/vegan friendly place in CLE. Stopped by for a weekend lunch and was lucky to find street parking close by (no parking lot designated for this place). Thanks freezing temps! lol First thing I noticed walking in was KIDS! Everywhere, all over the place from high chairs to one dressed as a princess to others 5-8 years old. A bar on the left and sort of jumbled seating throughout with flashes of bright colors on the walls the have flower patterns on them. All these tables and just one waitress trying to handle them all, clear dishes, and deal with payment. I was told to sit wherever you want. Trying to distance myself I chose a four seater, but eventually moved to a booth that would help me isolate a bit more from the swarms of kids. The waitress never came over to wipe the table. Tried the vegan nachos (upon the waitress saying the in-house vegan cheese is 'bomb'). Well, unfortunately the nachos were bland. No salsa. Not enough of that 'bomb' vegan cheese. Just a center concentration of black beans, pico de gallo, lettuce, and a drizzle of cheese. Where's the salsa? Where's the flavor? I asked for more of the cheese since all the chips under the top layer were dry! More cheese came, but I was never informed it would be an extra $1.50! The waitress should have mentioned there would be an extra charge. Unfortunately since she was the only person handling maybe 7 tables, I probably didn't get the attention. I finished the chips and ended up eating lettuce with pico like a salad with no taste. I think maybe some sort of salsa would have made such a difference in this dish. The restrooms will take you up a few stairs and then down a stairwell. Would be nice if there was hand sanitizer available at tables and tables are wiped down after a patron leaves. None of the staff wears masks. Especially in the kitchen where the food is being made. The least that can be done during a pandemic. After reading some of the reviews on here, my mom and I were concerned about going. However, the location was close and the menu looked up our alley, so we decided to give it a shot. We are really glad we did. All of our food was awesome and our service was amazing. Luke was very attentive to our needs, very nice, and super helpful with recommending options. It wasn't too loud and they were happy to put the Olympics on the TV for us, so we really liked the atmosphere. Lastly, one of the best parts is how awesome the drinks are. They immediately offered up stevia and alterations to drinks to accommodate my lower sugar preferences. Delicious freshly made cilantro jalapeño margs and many other options with fresh fruit. Really fantastic bartender (Kristen? Sorry for spelling) and server (Hirkp? Again sorry) who bent over backwards despite being very very busy to make us a green licorice juice-based margarita which was the most flavorful unique kale-apple-fennel cocktail we've ever had. I've been to this restaurant a handful of times and I'm happy to share a review. This place feels local, homey and welcoming. I'm pretty sure you just come in and sit down, no host stand. The bar was packed on this Friday evening but the two of us found a spot immediately. It's loud, busy, close quarters but worth it. Our server was fast and balancing a lot of tables well! We started with a couple juices, a mango tango and a kale aid. Both were phenomenal! For appetizers we tried the calypso salad which was nice - the small isn't small! The miso soup (supersized) - lots of seasoning and umami. I loved it so much I could barely wait for it to cool down. And then the fried tofu! The tofu itself was done just right but I wanted the sweet dipping to have more zing or more creamy because it didn't add much to the blank canvas that is tofu. For dinner we had the jackfruit burrito - absolutely delicious but probably a good idea to use a fork and knife eventually. Our second entree choice was the vegan fried rice. I enjoyed the cool vegetable addition which is outside the norm! Overall my stomach is very satisfied with all the wonderful flavors from Johnny Mango! I know we'll be back again. Havent been here in well over 20 yrs. On my return not a fan. Got takeout... Had the nachos and Bangkok chicken. Nachos nothing at all special. Needs to use authentic corn chips and not out of a bag. Needed some seasoned beef or pork for flavor! And where's the guacamole?! Restaurants act like guacamole is green gold when in fact I buy avocados all the time for under a buck. Not in love with the BBQ chicken and they gave me no grilled banana that was supposed to come with it. Didn't like the cabbage or beans. Whatever sauce was at the bottom of the rice was tasty and had a good sweet taste. I thought about celebrating my birthday here next month with friends but no. Their shrimp fried rice was everything!! Such bold flavors and SO delicious. The rice itself was already so well-seasoned that I only added a little of the sauce with it. If you're going to get a burrito and want a vegetarian option, try the jackfruit BBQ and upgrade to a big plate for only about $4 more to get the grains, beans, and the caramelized half banana. Huge fan of their beet juice, especially after a workout before coming there. The ohio city planet fitness is nearby, in case anyone had fitness goals for 2023 and still wanted a reward after. (I did lol). If you love coquito during the holidays, they also had their coquito margarita (not sure if that's a seasonal flavor)! There are a few tables for larger groups but if you want to take a party of 6+ during a busy time, plan on waiting or shifting times. They also have bar seating, if you prefer. Mostly street parking around the area, so if you find a spot a block away, just take it! I found everything pretty reasonably-priced for their portions. Absolutely the worst service I have ever received. I arrive with a few friends and we are seated. Our server comes over, no hello or how are you, we get drink orders. It REEKED of weed which I'm normally ok with, but from a server felt weird. 5 minutes after out drink order is placed, he comes with one water. Then he comes with 2 more and then another time. Kinda odd but we try and continue. Ordering is where it got weird. He takes our order then repeats it back to us. He got every single thing wrong. No "I'm so sorry", he continues to ask the whole table AGAIN, without apologizing. We were all dumbfounded. Also pretty sure he was the only server as all the other tables were not bussed and tables that were seated before us were just getting their food. Safe to say we were nervous. We got our appetizers about 40 mins after placing the order. When we finished, no plates were bussed so our table was full of crap. He comes over with a water pitcher, expecting him to pour it, he just sets it down and walks away. We tried to give it back because our table was becoming full of stuff he said "it's for you". After about an hour the food comes out and it's sloppily put together and all our dishes are still at the table so we are struggling for space. The food is mid, would be fine better if the service was even somewhat decent. When we got our checks, he messed up so bad with all different food and drinks no where on the right spot and it took an extra 20 mins for the check. When they came right he put them all in a giant pile on the table with receipts falling off so we had to literally pick them off the ground, again, no sorry! I'm pretty sure the one running the bar was the manager and he could definitely see the whole meal take place, nothing said even when we all look visibly baffled by the lack of service. Not to mention the bathroom smelled like a literal zoo and was full of trash. This felt like an episode of the twilight zone and I am beyond baffled and genuinely distraught. I never write reviews but I need to save someone a trip because that was actually insane. I always tip anywhere I go and that is the first time I have not tipped because our server was too high to function, was rude, and genuinely incompetent. If I can give this place 6 stars, I totally would! My one coworker raves about this place and is a frequent customer. He recommended the chicken pad thai dish and I was hesitant at first because I am normally not a fan of pad thai because of the peanut sauce they normally drench it in, but after some time of contemplating, I decided to give it a try. It never hurts to try something new, right? WOW I was really impressed with the size of this meal! Really a reasonable price for the size of the dish! Digging into the first bite, I was really surprised at the flavor and texture! The noodle was soft and mixed in with bits of crispy pieces. I loved how the dish was sprinkled with peanut and not drenched in a typical peanut sauce. Plus, the red powder that was all over the noodle gave it a kick in flavor, but for some people, it might have been too spicy. I love spicy foods, so it was just perfect! I even added a bit of sriracha on the side for an extra level of heat. After a long week of work, I also ordered their Tequila Sunrise. The menu stated that the sunrise is made with fresh squeezed orange juice and I was curious on how big of a difference that would make. Oh my, fresh OJ definitely changes the game of a Tequila Sunrise! I will never look at this drink the same again! Johnny Mango World Café and Bar is a great place to grab a delicious snack, meal, drink in Ohio City. Their fare includes dishes inspired by cultures from all over the world such as burritos, pad thai, noodle bowls, and jerk chicken. There are a number of delicious juice drinks and smoothies as well as alcoholic options like margaritas. The food is always very delicious. One of my favorites are the fried plantains which the restaurant has dubbed their Caribbean fries. Those are served with some pico de gallo and are absolutely amazing. Each month they highlight a specific food and have a special. For example during the colder fall and winter months you can get a delicious curry Laska soup. For those who are health-conscious, they have a number of side and entree salads to choose from as well. There's also a daily special list which describes a bread and slather, beans and a vegetable, and also ice cream. Many ingredients are locally sourced or from the West Side Market. One thing to know is that the restaurant can be loud at times and gets very busy during happy hour and dinner. In the summer, there is a side patio which is a great place to eat and people watch. Parking is also a little tight in Ohio City in general also you have to look for available spots on the street. The restaurant supports fundraising and you can obtain information about that from the display near the bar area. Omgsh love love love the vegan fried rice! I have had it numerous times and each time I devoured it in one sitting. It's flavorful and filled with green onions, green peppers, egg plant and topped with cold cucumbers and tomatoes. I think mushrooms are yucky so I opt out on those. There's a sauce that comes with it that is just the right amount of sweetness but I don't put it on because the rice is perfect without it. I hipped my hubby on to it and now he wants to eat it everyday! I have also tried the vegan Nachos which are tasty as well. They make a special vegan sauce instead of cheese to put on top and it comes with black beans, onions, and tomatoes. UPDATE 4/25/20 Not sure what happened to the good customer service but it was definitely way below my standards today! Husband ordered dinner for me and when he went in to get it there were 2 peeps talking about the curb outside and they didn't acknowledge my husband. He had to walk past them and only then did they speak to him to tell him that he couldn't ho any further to get his food. What was wrong with stopping the convo that could have been continued as soon as he left to greet him? I never would have found this place because it doesn't fit perfectly under any cuisine! But it excels in all the food it serves. The waitress told us to try the pad thai but my friend really wanted nachos. We were not disappointed by the quantity or quality. It is very difficult to find vegetarian nachos but this restaurant did a good job with them. We did wish there were fewer tomatoes and more chips, but that is probably just a personal preference. There was a loud group next to us, but it just shows that this is the place to go when you have friends in town! The service was fast and the waitress kept checking up on us. This is a great place to have a cocktail and meal. Staff wears masks. Social distancing is in place in the seated area, not so much at the bar. But it appears it's filled with regulars who also get better service than those seated at the tables. Overall, the experience was average. I also loved the emphasis on fresh foods and the variety of cultures and flavors represented on the menu. Let me start by saying we came here mildly day drunk after a day at the beach, sooooo...my opinions are possibly skewed. Food was great for the price. We had a jackfruit carne asada and vegan nachos. Absolutely worth every penny! Similar vegan options are usually 3-5 dollars more at other places. Nothing mind-blowing but exceptional bar food. The beers were cold and normal priced. How the Health Department hasn't closed this place down is a mystery. A journey to the men's room requires a trip up steps, through an area where the wait staff congregates, then down two sets of stairs that are barely lit, into the basement. The first thing I saw was three large sacks resting on the damp floor of an open storage area. The bathroom was absolutely disgusting, filthy in every way possible. The place for used paper towels was overflowing onto the floor, and under that mess the floors were soiled, and the walls were dirty. We ate outside, and the setting was pleasant. The waitress was nice and efficient. There were four of us. Two of us had the grilled steak salad which had loads of fresh veggies, but the steak, ordered medium, was very tough. One of us had the jerk chicken thighs which were nicely done with a delicious mango salsa, but the beans were sodden in salt. And I had the Pad Thai with added steak, which was pretty awful. It was served barely warm, and for a dish that is supposed to have sweet overtones, it was terribly salty, and the added steak was leathery and flavorless. This restaurant needs to close for a week and correct all of its cleanliness problems.
