We had a fantastic meal at John's last weekend. I had the top of the line steak and it was worth it. My husband had the fish special and it was delicious as well. The atmosphere is delightful. It is small and contemporary and busy! The 10 to 12 tables filled up pretty rapidly when we got there at 6:30 PM and it stayed busy the whole time we were there. We were going to a hockey game in Everett and so decided to use one of the Yelp deals and try out a new restaurant. This was it! The steak my husband ordered was perfectly cooked, if not a bit peppery. I ordered a seafood linguine and the kids ordered a chicken dish each. The service was excellent and the food was served quickly. The only reason I did not give it five stars is that while the food was good and the service was great - the prices were a bit high for what we received. If we are ever back in the neighborhood, I'm sure we will eat there again. read more

We went for our anniversary dinner and were very pleased. I read through the yelp reviews and the things that caught my attention from the reviews were: local source for ingredients, chef is the owner and their family runs the restaurant, small. I havent spent much time in mukilteo, and when I clicked through the photos on yelp the restaurant looked to be apart of a strip mall (bummer) BUT it wasn't, the restaurant is connected to a couple other boutique type stores but the setting was very nice and not strip mallish at all. As for the pictures of the interior on yelp, they are correct, and I was a bit "well this doesn't seem to romantic" but again, once we stepped into the restaurant it was very nice. The photos dont do this place justice. The food was excellent, I followed other reviewers and got the fresh halibut wrapped in prosciutto, it was amazing. My wife ordered the seafood linguini and was raving about it. We also shared an appetizer of fried calamari which was the best calamari we've ever had (crispy and the breading is just amazing, very savory with a little bit of a bite). We were very happy to give this place a shot and we will be back. The only thing I'd point out is the restaurants hours, they close at 9pm, I am not sure if that is the last time they will seat someone or if that is when the kitchen closes, but it seemed like everyone else who was dining knew for we were the last table to leave (we weren't rushed out, nor did we feel like we were being pushed out, but we did notice the emptying of the place). So I mention this for anyone who thinks they might be there close to 9pm to inquire w/ the restaurant about the specifics). Our lasting impression was: Excellent food, great pricing, and very nice ambiance. We felt it was on par with nice places in downtown Seattle with a nicer price tag and much closer to home (and easier parking). read more

For my birthday this year, my friends (who live on Whidbey) wanted to take me somewhere special. Friends of theirs said we should go to John's Grill... and they weren't wrong. The place is a lovely smaller restaurant close to the ferry landing in Mukilteo, nice ambiance. John not only owns the place, but is the head chef; he cuts his own steaks & does special items from time to time. The head waitress is his wife, and, on her suggestion, one of my friends had the rabbit; I had the filet. Both were simply stunningly good; world class. The sweetest young lady works at John's Grill. She is always running rampant, serving quickly and efficiently, making drinks and helping others with their orders. She never complains and always smiles even when others are treating her with disrespect. We have been returning to Johns Grill because of her infectious optimism and great service. Went for my birthday in early September. It was very good, kind of a surprise for Mukilteo-- nice calibre of wonderful, innovative food for this area. Kind of expensive, but in line with other bistro-type restaurants in Seattle. The one drawback was that they were understaffed. I guess because they want to be a family business-- the co-owner was the only server, and there was one hostess. It wasn't very busy, but service suffers when the owner is being all things. If they would train and allow their hostess to tend bar, expedite food, bring coffee, put down tabs and run the payments, things would have been much smoother. I don't like waiting 15 minutes before the server even approaches the table and tells us the specials-- could have chosen our wine before that, if we'd known what the specials were. read more

We started with the Crab Cake appetizer which was excellent and big enough for two. The bread was good but not hot like I prefer. The Filet Mignon was cooked rare as ordered and the mushroom sauce I chose very tasty. I was fully satisfied with the Filet but next time I may ask for extra rare to suit my taste. The mashed potatoe was very good and the green vegetable adequate. Johns is in the local area so will plan on returning. They handled the 30 dollar discount card displayed on my smart phone without difficulty. read more

I love how small and cute it is, the wine choice is amazing and there are no words for the food, any dish can blow your mind. Very nice (but VERY small) restaurant. They only have about ten tables, so you might be out of luck if you don't have a reservation. The food was outstanding but quite pricey. I took my sister for her birthday, so I expected to spend some money :) Everything was good, and it was a special occasion, so it was worth it. The chef really knows his stuff! The owner's son was our server, and he was very friendly and helpful. Since I had read previous Yelp reviews, I had to try the crab cake and the beef stroganoff. Both were excellent and I would order them again. This is a great place, not cheap - but I think it's worth it to find good quality dining, plus I am more than happy to support a local, family business. We are definitely going back ! read more

I just went to this place, it's small restaurant, so you don't have that big chain atmosphere, I read the reviews on Yelp and tried the crab cakes, holy cow.....lt was fantastic, my son who doesn't eat crab, scarf 1/2 of it himself, had to whack his knuckles with a spoon to leave the rest alone. Folks, if you like crab cakes, you gotta give this try, it's very light and airy. Had the peppered new york steak.... Very good and tender, but...... Folks who are intolerant to pepper, this isn't for you, it has a very nice crust of pepper, cooked perfectly and the mash potatoes that accompanied it was out of this world. Totally agree. It's almost as if they get more than 10 guests, they crumble. The food is mediocre, small portions. Very lay back and inconsistent service and food. Unfortunate. They could do better! We walked in without a reservation and were told the dining room was completely booked. We sat at the bar for almost 2 hours, and when we left, less than half the tables in the dining room were full. Clearly, they can't handle turning over tables. Maybe this all speaks to a lack of experience running a restaurant business. Their loss!! read more

As anyone who lives north of Seattle can attest, it is very hard to find good, relaxed food that is not heavily commercialized or heavily 99-ilized (if you live up here you know what I mean). My girlfriend lives in Seattle so she and I often eat down there instead of up here, but last night we decided to just go for a drive and see what we could find around this area. We ended up in Mukilteo at a surprisingly nice looking place called John's Grill. First impression was of a clean, modern restaurant that was run by a real chef and that his business was his real passion. First, the food. Awesome. On the front of each menu was the daily special, but instead of just telling us about some entree it was an entire meal prepared, balanced, and set to satisfy for only 38 dollars. My girlfriend and I decided that we could split the special and order an appetizer and we would be fine. First to arrive was a very smooth glass of red wine (step 1 of the special), and my Fishtail Ale beer. The appetizer that we ordered was the Beef Kabobs, which were amazing. The meat was tender and char-broiled just perfectly, with a delicious cilantro sauce on top and carmelized onions that we scooped up on top of the kabobs, and at the end of each skewer was one of the best tomatoes I have eaten in along time. When I bit into it, with just a bit of crisp from the grill on the skin of the tomatoe, the taste just leapt to my tongue. Sweet, refreshing, and a perfect complement to great kabobs. After the kabobs came, the salad arrived (step 2 of the special). A very fresh salad with plenty of cheese and all the ingredients. The best thing to be said about the salad, besides it hitting all the right buttons for a good salad, was simply that it didn't leave us full. The server, a really nice guy we talked to after dinner for quite awhile, took his time to bring each course, never rushed us, and kept the anticipation for each course coming. The salad just wet our appetites for more. Finally the main course, lamp chop with potatoes and fresh vegetables (part 3 of the special). Note to everyone who goes here, this lamb chop was HUGE. Seared with a crust on the outside, perfectly done in the middle. The potatoes we're nice and we asked for more bread to go with it. The sauce on the lamb chop was amazing. I found myself dipping my bread in it and trying to soak up every drop (their was plenty). The vegetables, often just a side accompaniment that gets ignored to most meals, were perfectly steamed. Crisp broccoli that was warm but wasn't soggy. I loved it. My girlfriend and I split the entire thing and it was one of the best entree's Ive had in along time. Following the main entree came dessert (part 4 of the special) and a small glass of port (part 5 of the special) (Did i mention the special was only 38 dollars? holy crap). Dessert was mousse with chocolate ice cream and fresh cut strawberries and blueberries. The port went absolutely perfect with the dessert. By the time we had finished the mousse I was finally feeling that full feeling, which was amazing to me. Normally a big meal like that, you feel it half way through your entree and then the rest is forced. But this meal was so balanced and the entire thing, timing on the plates from our waiter, size of the meal, and even the drinks, just served to enhance the experience. Above and beyond the amazing food, the staff and the chef himself seemed like really great people. We we're the last to leave on their Saturday night, so we got a chance to chat with them and have the place to ourselves for a bit. A romantic song came on their in-house music station and my girlfriend and I ended up dancing in front of their window while the fresh snow fell. It was extremely romantic, and the waiter left us alone, didn't even seem fazed at all by what we were doing. Gave us the perfect isolation while still being their whenever we needed him to take our plates, serve our food, and chat to us. As we left, the chef John came out and waved goodbye to us and we told him what an amazing meal we had. All in all, this was a huge surprise. Finding a quiet romantic place to eat a great meal north of Seattle is a real challenge. I was so moved by this place, their perfect food, and the romantic and kind atmosphere that I am posting my first review for YELP. John is a GENIUS! The food was so delicious and what made it even better... it was fun. My husband ordered the Scorpion (soft shell crab and prawns) and the presentation was really great and the taste was even better. My steak, with the peppercorn rub, melted in my mouth. It was best steak I've ever had. For Dessert we ordered John's famous mousse and I have to confess, before it arrived I thought how good can a glorified pudding be? My taste buds were taught a lesson. I will never use the "P" word to describe this dessert again. It was in a class by itself. Overall, great night with excellent food! read more

I've wanted to go to John's Grill for a long time! We went there for my birthday dinner last month. Unfortunately, the food was just "all right," and the service was quite mediocre. The prices were too high for food that was not exceptional, and I felt that maybe the staff was new to restaurant work? Also, the bottle of wine we ordered was on a "special" price for $39, $3 less than its "usual" price, but we were charged for the regular price. Yes, we can afford $3 more, but when I brought it to their attention, the staff was quite uninterested in fixing it. They just sort of looked at each other! I probably won't go back there, which is a shame, because I like to support local businesses. read more

This is such a cute place. Although you don't have a view of the water, it makes up for it by its ambiance and small intimate dining room. There are only 10 or so tables and there is a full bar with some seating too, which makes for a nice quite romantic atmosphere. My husband and I went here a few days before valentines day, even though the restaurant lost our reservation, they were able to find a seat right away. The food was to die for and good portions too. We had the calimari which was amazing with its jalepeno dipping sauce, and I barely like calimari. I ordered the pork tenderloin, which came with fetticcini (most favorful fettuccini I've ever had), and asparagus. It was so delicious I couldn't leave anything on my plate....I had to eat it all....and I did. My husband ordered the steak, which I guess is what John's Grill is known for. He had the peppered steak, which was perfectly seasoned and the coloring for medium steak was perfect. Based on the other Yelp ratings, we were really looking forward to a nice meal. The restaurant is cozy with a great atmosphere. But, the food was all mediocre. We had a crab cake, calamari, lamb chops, New York strip, and seafood linguini. Everything was bland. My lamb chops were beautiful, but tasted like beef. Also, don't be in a hurry. The restaurant was half full and it took 1.5 hours to get food. Some might like the slower service. Too bad. read more

I have lived in Mukilteo my whole life and graduated this past year from kamiak high school. I played basketball at kamiak, and have now moved on to play collegiate basketball at pacific lutheran university. I went to johns grill to hand them a flier, which basically was a letter on how they could support me and the girls basketball team when we go to Puerto Rico in December to volunteer and give back. I walked in to johns grill and asked to speak to the manager to give him the flier, but the waitress was so incredibly rude that I wasn't even given the opportunity to tell her why I was there. She said, "you obviously know nothing about business otherwise you wouldn't be here" "I don't have time to listen to your soliciting" "I am done talking to you". Afterwards I literally sat in my car and cried for 10 minutes because of how scary her tone of voice was and how rude her words were. The waitress was older, with short curly hair. I am proud to be from Mukilteo and to be in a community that is so supportive. Johns grill does not fit that description. read more

We took a chance last weekend and took some friends out to John's Grill and were suprised to find a new favorite! The food was fantastic as the service. We loved the cozy atmosphere and the artwork. True it doesn't have the views of Ivar's or Arnie's but the food and service was superior to either of those. We found out John, the chef/owner, helped start Daniel's Broiler in Bellevue and it shows. We will be returning soon and bringing more friends with us. Do yourself a favor and take a chance like we did, you won't be disappointed. read more

Enjoyed a really great dinner at John's grill. Took my sister and husband out to dinner, the restaurant is warm and inviting. Not loud so very easy to enjoy conversation. We shared a crab cake, it was delicious and perfect to share between 3 people. For entree we had the seafood pasta, pork tenderloin and the beef stroganoff. All were delicious, pasta dish was large serving. We had the brownie and cheese cake for desert, delicious. We each had a before dinner cocktail and shared a bottle of red wine, all for under $200. The bar help is, however, not as friendly--kind of clique-ish with the "regulars" and maybe too busy to be more talkative. Very unhappy - will never go there again! We waited quite a while for a table. Once we were given a table it was very nice. Next to the window and out of the way. We ordered and started with bread. Then the management came to our table and said we had to move. This table was reserved for a long term customer. They put us at a table right in front of the kitchen door. This was very insulting. the management made a big deal on how they made it happen for the other client. Never came to our table to explain or set things right. Went here on Wednesday night without a reservation and were seated quickly. Had a glass of wine and my husband a good beer on tap. The food was good...Seafood Lengunie; and the ingredients were fresh(shrimp,crab and whatever)....my husband had Swordfish not grilled(you would think grill-grill house). No sides included in the meal. There is a happy hour here for the house wines and martinis and such. Not my glass of wine. I gave it a three because the food was OK, bread was dry and it was expensive. My service was good....the food was good and we will go in for happy hour sometime on the way to the ferry. read more
