Ever since my trip to Philadelphia last year, my relationship with cheesesteaks over here has never been the same. For one: any other time, if you asked me whether I prefer provolone or Cheese Whiz, I'd say the former, easily. And yet a real Philly Cheesesteak makes me reconsider. Unfortunately, John's Philly Grille is yet another in a long line of cheesesteak places that make me long for a six-hour plane ride. Using provolone is the least of their effronteries. The flavor in their signature cheesesteak is near non-existent. It was as if I was squandering my daily calorie count on nothing at all. On the plus side, they are very generous with their meat and their prices are very reasonable for the amount of food you get. Their people are attentive and courteous to boot. This is a partial review as I only tried thier hot dog and fountain cherry coke. I took a wrong turn on Saturday before leaving class in LB to the a fullerton math lab. In between that, I needed a quick bite. The place is not too far from the beaches so you get the ocean air. It is on PCH with so many other places on that strip. Right in back of the McDonalds you find John's Philly Grille, it is not huge but its good. They have a few tables to eat at but the people I saw except one guy took it to go. I ordered a Chili cheese dog with no chili and no cheese. The weiner tasted lighter on the pallet, the type of weiner which would go perfectly with chili and cheese(but im a plain hot dog fan). The bread was really good, it seemed fresh made, the dog was served to you in a cool white deli wrapping paper. The fountain soda gets my stamp of approval. I would like to try thier Philly and some of the other menu items like the roast beef. I liked thier hot dog and it was gone in seconds, so I did my math somewhat hungry. Anywhoo, I will be back to try other items including the many flavors of Gelato and various hot & cold sandwiches. read more

Great service and great steak. This spot pretty much has it all burgers, philly, chili cheese fries, onions ring, ice cream. You name it, pretty much you everyday burger stand food but tasty. Vintage look with patio out door seating to enjoy the good weather while you eat. I ordered fries and "The Works@" which has bell pepper, onion, cheese, and fresh lot grilled steak. Of all the take-out and delivery restaurants we have ordered from in this pandemic crisis, John's Philly Grille is the best by far. The food is excellent and the service is the same. When you call in the order the phone is picked up in 3 rings and it is always a friendly voice ready to take your order. The sandwiches are gigantic so there is always another meal in each sandwich. I have eaten at other locations and I thought I remembered really liking them. I have had both chicken cheesesteak and standard here and both were good. Steak was better. I did try their pizza fries last time and was surprised to like them, especially after seeing they make them...in the microwave:/ I have a real pep peeve with this. No kitchen that sells food should ever have a microwave, and they don't even hide it. It is right out front. So...that said. I did like the taste, but would have preferred if 1, my fries were more crispy, due to microwave and that my stirofoam fry container did not have melted points all over it due to the microwave (who knows what that introduces to the food) So I will give them other try, but I am a little disappointed. I grew up in philly, so I know a great steak, and this is NOT great. It is ok for not being in philly and better than other out-of-philly places, but don't mistake it for a true representation of philly. And their service is the worst I have seen. I'm born and raised in Philly so I'm gonna critique the hell outta this place. Most places that advertise "Philly steaks" are generally not good and very far off from the actual Philly cheesesteak. But...When I went into this place I immediately saw that they were hollowing out the rolls, which, only someone from philly would teach people to do that. I then knew this place was legit. I kept it simple. Cheesesteak with fried onions. Just like back home. And it was delicious. Meat was chopped up just right. Cheese was perfect, not too much not too little. Even the roll was pretty damn close to Philly (considering we're in Cali). People were super chill and nice. Overall, I think I've finally found my go to cheesesteak spot. Well I was really excited because I saw that John's Philly Grille was here and I've been to the one in Huntington Beach and had amazing sandwiches there. So I was expecting the same from this location I even asked them if it was the same and they said it was. But let me tell you it definitely wasn't ! the guy seemed friendly and nice but there was three of them just standing around when I walk in and I always hate to see that there's always something to clean especially these dirty tables every table was dirty but yet they have time to stand around I don't get it anyway the sandwich itself the bread they must've put one side down on the grill because it was fully hard and crusty on one side the cheese I don't even know where it was on half of the sandwich had no cheese the other half had some but it was a big pile in one spot and the meat itself was disgusting it was way over cooked and had a lot of black specs from their dirty grill they must not of clean their grill in days or weeks the sandwich tasted awful what a bummer seems like it's the normal nowadays nobody cares. read more

The cheesesteaks are really good, but that customer service is what it's all about! We were taking a boat ride through Naples to check out all the Christmas lights in the area and wanted something easy to take on board to munch on while gawking. I called in my order ahead of time so that it was a quick grab and go type of deal. Well, we all know how traffic is in Orange County and my 30-40 minute commute quickly turned into an hour ordeal. I called the restaurant to let them know I was running late and they assured me that all was okay. I finally get there and Alissa (owner/manager?) met me with a smile. Not only did she have everything boxed up for me, she helped me out to my car with all my items, too. She made a bag of extra sauces, napkins and other condiments so that my guests could all enjoy their sandwiches the way they wanted to. I got the classic cheesesteak and it was huge. There was a good amount of meat and I loved the gooey dairy that was included with every bite. The bread was nice and toasted and held all the ingredients together nicely. Next time, I'd probably add some lettuce and tomato to make it even better. Prices are super reasonable, and that customer service was great! I'll for sure be coming back the next time I'm in the area or have a bunch of mouths to feed. read more

Been here twice in less than a week's time, and can't think of another spot for a ginormous amount of cheesesteak for an awesome price. Fast service and great quality as well. "The Works" cheesesteak comes out to be $11.53 with tax for the whole option. I eat a lot, and the whole option can be two meals. You honestly can portion it to be four meals if you wanted. I was born in Seal Beach. I've been to John's since it opened. A few months ago I ordered a few full sandwiches and after I got home I realized that I had 1/2 sandwiches and was charged for full sandwiches. I didn't want to hassle going back and complaining and let it go. Yesterday I ordered a 1/2 sandwich and some fries and paid around 11 dollars and when I looked at my change I had 2 dollars out of a $20.00...after I tipped the server 2 dollars. The sandwich was terrible and the fries were 1/2 the amount as usual. I realize that John's sandwiches are expensive but getting burned on change or overcharged on an order is ridiculous. I will never go back again. The quality and quantity of the sandwiches have been based on who the server and cook are in all. 3 of their locations. Ridiculous! read more
