I had a craving for some cheesy steak goodness and followed Yelp to this cute little destination just over the bridge in Seal Beach. It's kind of tucked back into the corner of the strip mall so I had to circle a couple of times but eventually found my way. The place is sort of drowned in Philly memorabilia and isn't really the coziest of lunch spots but it was clean and fine for a quick lunch. Definitely a no-frills kind of place, for sure. The guy behind the counter was not the most helpful with our questions about the menu but he was polite enough. After a little confusion, we settled on a 12inch Philly with "the works"...onion, green peppers and their combo of hot peppers consisting of jalapeno, banana peppers and pepperoncini's. We also opted for a 12inch plain cheese steak with a light amount of their spicy pepper combo and an order of fries to split. All of our food came out quickly and well prepared. Their bread is to die for! Both sandwiches were filled with meat and had a generous amount of a nice and creamy provolone melted on the top. The veggies/peppers on both sandwiches were well balanced. Note to self: one 12inch sandwich is MORE than enough for 2 people. We both had enough for dinner leftovers. The fries were only so-so. They were definitely the frozen variety and a little over-cooked and over-seasoned. I did give a try to their spicy/garlicky chili sauce they have in their little refrigerator of condiments but I was underwhelmed. It tasted like almost straight powdered chili seasoning. Maybe it was an off day but it definitely wasn't for me. The tabasco mustard was way more to my liking. Quick, fairly inexpensive and it saved me from having to make dinner last night. That in itself earns John's Philly Grille a thumbs up! P.S. Extra kudos for their obvious support of the families of the Salon Meritage shootings. The restaurant is in the same shopping center so I'm sure they knew many of those involved. Pretty good. Our cheesesteaks were served scalding hot which was odd... fairly flavorful. Not at all like what they serve in Philadelphia.

Super close to Seal Beach pier. Lots of parking spaces in their shared lot. I would recommend calling ahead as our order of 1 full sandwich and fries totaling $16 took 10-15 minutes, and there were more people waiting outside. Mushroom cheesesteak was all sorts of umami with a slight tang and kick courtesy of the pepper relishes inside the chewy but bouncy bun that surprisingly wasn't soggy from all that deliciousness. It is a bit pricy, but the full sandwich fed two people to satisfaction. Kudos to their service, they were able cut in half and wrap in half our full sandwich. Much easier to share this way. We did order their steak fries, it's comparable to red Robin's fries with less salt. I like that they gave ranch at no extra charge, and I'm not sure if it's house made or store bought but it was the most delicious ranch I've had in a while. It's an open kitchen and it was nice to see everyone wearing masks. It seems you are only allowed to come inside to order and pick up, otherwise you'd wait outside. Our entire family (the WHOLE group! Granparents, in-laws, to babies) keep a LOT of traditions. Each year we walk up and down the Canals in Naples, CA. to see the awesome decorations and lights (and all the fun Christmas stuff the other half get up to!) :) it's amazing and incentive! The houses are beautiful too! I'm almost 40 and we have been doing this as long as I can remember. We have had several different food spots that have become "tradition"'for a minute at the end of the night, but most haven't lasted long (either with us or in business). But Philly Grille!!!! Wow. What a perfect end to a perfect night! We love Christmas, tradition, family, friends, good food and good fun. This is the best place to end up! Great food! Perfect atmosphere, I swear it's like you meet a new friend every time you are there! My dad loved the Naples excursion and kept it going and kept it fun.. but once we found John's Philly Grille..! UPDATE: We spoke to John (the owner) this morning and he was very quick to make sure we got our refund and apologetic about how the food turned out. I can absolutely understand a perfect storm of bad circumstances leading to what happened yesterday and I appreciate his quick reply and response when we called. Ordered two Bully Burgers with cheese and fries - get charged for two side orders of fries when all I wanted was the fries that come with the burgers. The prices have gone way up and the quality has gone way down - burger is so fat riddled it's inedible. Also ordered an Original Cheese Steak, was charged for and given a Mushroom Cheese Steak...get it home and there's no cheese on the cheese steak. Staff was short and clearly didn't care about the orders or actually making the correct food. Will never come back here. We want to support small businesses in our local area, so today we picked this place. Our first time. We wore masks, as did the employees we saw. After ordering We stepped outside to distance ourselves. Just as we walked back in to check on our order a women came in the front door. She was not wearing a mask and was carrying a used soda cup. She said hello to the guy behind the counter while using the soda machine to fill her cup. She stood next to the soda machine talking a mile a minute, about someone outside blowing their nose. no gloves, mask and using a used cup from where? All I can say is ewww! Just the best !!! I could not ever go to the "chain sandwich stores" after coming here. Even though I have lived in this area for over 35 years, it took my finicky East Coast boyfriend to convince me to try them and we've not looked back, and he is someone that was spoiled with good sandwiches from the likes of "Brent's" in the San Fernando Valley before moving to the beach with me. We love the cheesesteaks and the hoagie and custom subs, literally made in front of you with generous portions, reasonable prices and a nice staff. Hidden gem. Nondescript strip mall location housing some incredible cheesesteak sandwiches. I had a large, which unless you eat a lot and are hungry, isn't for you. The cheesesteak with tons of steak and perfect amount of cheese came out piping hot right off the grill. Crispy fresh bread that took just the right amount of soggy ness from the meat was great. Green peppers and hot peppers gave it a great kick, the hot peppers were flavorful and hot but not too hot. Also the food came out quick, great for a quick bite. Plenty of seating for a small location. I will be coming back frequently. read more

Just got a Mushroom Cheesesteak. What a disgusting mess! The most obvious thing is that the "steak" is more like hamburger. It is ground up something anyway. Perhaps I don't want to know what it is. Ever since my trip to Philadelphia last year, my relationship with cheesesteaks over here has never been the same. For one: any other time, if you asked me whether I prefer provolone or Cheese Whiz, I'd say the former, easily. And yet a real Philly Cheesesteak makes me reconsider. Unfortunately, John's Philly Grille is yet another in a long line of cheesesteak places that make me long for a six-hour plane ride. Using provolone is the least of their effronteries. The flavor in their signature cheesesteak is near non-existent. It was as if I was squandering my daily calorie count on nothing at all. On the plus side, they are very generous with their meat and their prices are very reasonable for the amount of food you get. Their people are attentive and courteous to boot. This is a partial review as I only tried thier hot dog and fountain cherry coke. I took a wrong turn on Saturday before leaving class in LB to the a fullerton math lab. In between that, I needed a quick bite. The place is not too far from the beaches so you get the ocean air. It is on PCH with so many other places on that strip. Right in back of the McDonalds you find John's Philly Grille, it is not huge but its good. They have a few tables to eat at but the people I saw except one guy took it to go. I ordered a Chili cheese dog with no chili and no cheese. The weiner tasted lighter on the pallet, the type of weiner which would go perfectly with chili and cheese(but im a plain hot dog fan). The bread was really good, it seemed fresh made, the dog was served to you in a cool white deli wrapping paper. The fountain soda gets my stamp of approval. I would like to try thier Philly and some of the other menu items like the roast beef. I liked thier hot dog and it was gone in seconds, so I did my math somewhat hungry. Anywhoo, I will be back to try other items including the many flavors of Gelato and various hot & cold sandwiches. read more
