This hamburger joint is pretty darn good! While it's a lil on the pricey side as far as burger joints go, the food makes up for it! We've been here mostly for their cheeseburger specials but have also had their breakfast burritos too. I've been here a couple of times, the food is good. That's why I'm giving an extra star. Other than that it's a one star! :) i went in tonight and received the worst costumer service! I wanted to pay separately and the cashier SAID she couldn't delete it off the register which is BS, she could have asked a manager for help but she didn't so I couldn't pay separately. They claim to have the "BEST BREAKFAST BURRITO IN TOWN" and they definitely live up to it. Not only are their burritos good, but just about everything else on their menu is bomb diggity. I've been coming here for 5+ years, not as long as the other regulars, but long enough to be considered a true fan. Whether it's for breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner, John's has exactly what you need. The reason why I like this place so much is that it feels like home. The people here are so nice, both workers and customers, and the food is homemade quality. You go in and place your order to the ladies behind the counter. You pay and they give you the number to place on your table (if you're dining in). When your food is ready, they'll bring the food to your table and ask if you need anything else. Don't hesitate to ask for extra condiments! They're super nice about it. My favorite breakfast item is actually at a three way tie. - French Toast: Perfectly prepared french toast that isn't too sweet to make you feel guilty. But if you're like me, I drown it in warm syrup. It comes topped with powdered sugar! - Pancakes, Eggs, Sausage: These are quite possibly one of the BEST pancakes I've ever had. It tastes BETTER than my homemade pancakes for sure, as well as many other pancakes I've had. I don't quite know what they put in it... cinnamon? nutmeg? not sure. But it tastes AMAZING and unique to John's Place. Super fluffy and melt in your mouth good. - Sausage Breakfast Burrito: Que the Hallelujah chorus. Seriously. This stuff is that good. I'm sure you've all had a good breakfast burrito in your life and probably felt like shiznits after... but this one won't betray you like that! After eating the whole thing (don't judge me), I don't feel like crap. Surprising but true. This burrito has melty ooey gooey cheese on the outer layers (like a quesadilla), HUGE chunks of sausage throughout the whole thing, eggs, hash browns, and salsa. Simple but extremely good. I crave this burrito all the time. I eat it with ranch. I'm also a huge fan of their burgers. It is so so soooo juicy and fresh... I can't even. I recommend their 1/3 lb cheeseburger. Their fries are always made fresh and they come out piping hot with the perfect amount of salt on them. I ask for ranch and ketchup to dip the french fries in. Pure bliss. Haven't been here in about a year. I was surprised to see how much they raised their prices. I ordered a BLT on wheat toast and that was $6.39 before tax. To me 6 bucks for two pieces of toast, a little mayo, a couple pieces of bacon, a leaf of lettuce & a slice of tomato is pretty expensive. Checked out some of the other prices they are. . $7.29 for cold tuna sandwich $8.99 for chili fries $7.99 for beef & bean burrito Ouch! For what it is, this place is 4 stars. My boyfriend has been coming to this place for 20 years, and his whole family loves it. The staff is always friendly and eager to talk and help. John was so successful in Brea he opened up a second resaurant. They always sponsor local community youth teams (like soccer, baseball, etc), which is always nice to see. They have everything from breakfast to steak to gyros to pastrami to burgers...I had an egg-white omelette for breakfast, which was great, but I had to pull some strings to get the veggies in there--they had one with spinach and one with tomatoes, but getting both took some eye-lash batting. But if you don't feel like cooking and want some good food and nice people, check out John's place. It's sure to become a family favorite. read more

I've never been disappointed at John's Place! It is a diner, so you have to know what you're getting into from the get-go, but the food always tastes fresh to me. In my opinion, their pastrami sandwich is a good size and it tastes scrumptious! It's a lot to eat with the fries, though. Their greek salad is also good. read more

I am not a big breakfast guy but went to breakfast with an friend and I thought the breakfast was very good. Had the Ham and eggs (scrambled) and they did them perfect. The hash browns where cooked the way the should be, crunchy on the outside but soft in the middle. Will return next time I am in the area to try something new. read more

World's largest menu! I've been going to John's since day one.. literally. At one point this spot in the parking lot used to be a gas station. I love John's. It's the epitome of the huge menu, greasy spoon, everything is good, and the prices are just right. It's always moderately busy during the week and really busy on the weekends. This is not a place you'd go out of your way for, there's no reason to travel to eat here, there's absolutely nothing special.. John's is just consistently good and great to have less then a 3 minute drive away. read more

Lots of variety, always good food and plenty of it. Nice, helpful staff and very clean. The food, for the most part, is not very healthful -- lots of fried stuff -- but it's good tasting. I usually go for lunch or dinner, and I've gotten in kind of a rut -- a bountiful pastrami sandwich, a delicious tuna melt, or a mega steak burrito. But my friend ordered off the breakfast menu today (served all day) and it looked amazing. I think I'll be broadening my horizons. One of the reviewers said something about a white clientele. It seems pretty ethnically blended to me. And it's a great place for families. Not sure why I'm not giving John's 5 stars. I highly recommend it, but it just doesn't feel quite like 5 stars ... and it may be a bit overpriced. Nonetheless, I can almost guarantee a satisfying experience. UPDATE 1/6/13: Had a Roast Beef Dip at John's today. Tasteless. Very Disappointing. Dry, shredded cow on a bun with colored water au jus. I worked here when I was in high school and I'd still eat here! Everything is clean, sanitary and yummy. I stay away from the salad bar because at night it's simply covered in saran wrap and brought out the next day and I'm not sure how they manage and monitor that something isn't going in and out for 6 days. Broccoli soup! This is usually served on Monday's only. They have all the amazing breakfast foods you could wish for also. More expensive than Mc. Donald's, Cheaper than Red Robin, tastier than both. I pass by this place every morning on the way to work, and today, had my first meal here for lunch with my coworkers :) It's a cozy little place, and yes, it's full of old people, but there are young 'uns as well! John's Place has got a homey feel to it - booths all around in a wooden home-like foundation. Menu - they've got a pretty good selection of Americanized ethnic foods. Mexican, Italian, greek, and of course, American fare. Today, I ordered a quarter pound Cheeseburger and a side of (thick) Fries. Very pleasant independently owned coffee shop/fast food restaurant. Along similar lines with establishments such as Farmer Boys. There is ample seating available and the place is definitely clean! Breakfast is available all day..... Five stars vs. four for Farmer Boys due to the availability of a full salad bar, plus having a much gentler (and tastier) brew of coffee as well as serving half and half vs. the liquid fat creamer offered by Farmers. read more

I've lived near John's for many years, and used to enjoy coming here for a decent, quick meal in a comfortable and convenient location. The food is average to good, about what you'd expect from a small neighborhood diner. A little pricey though. Don't expect any bargain meals here. The club sandwich might be the best thing on the menu, and is large enough to satisfy big eaters, or share between those less indulgent. Despite decent food and the convenience, I've all but stopped eating at John's for one simple reason: the customer service varies between below average to horrible. The words that come to mind...snotty, irritated, indifferent, cold and sometimes downright rude. No thanks. I can suffer poor customer service in exchange for great food or great value, but I'm not getting either of those at John's. read more

I think most food is good if it's prepared well...what adds the special touch is good customer care. And I must admit that they are phenomenal in that! The food here is pretty good but still a little pricy. This is why I can't give them 5 stars. With the $0.25 above mininum wage I make per hour lunch for two shouldn't cost $17, even if the gyro sandwich I had was really good. That's probably the reason I'm still willing to give them four stars. Gyro? At a burger joint? Damn excellent. My picky lover always craves the same foods and she is never willing to go anywhere interesting like Daphne's Greek Cafe or somewhere that doesn't serve her boring old staple foods (chicken strips, soup, pizzza). So for me to be able to eat gyro is excellent, damn excellent. I'd even say the quality of the meat was a step up from somewhere like Daphne's but the pita bread could have been a touch better. Of course, Lindsey got the chicken strips and french fries. I've tried so many different chicken strip and french fry lunches because that's all she eats and John's Place didn't stand out anywhere too special in that area. Oh and before I forget-THEY SERVE BREAKFAST A L L D A Y! Maybe if I go that route next time we go back it will be a bit cheaper... Read the reviews for this place and some people were saying their pastrami was BETTER than "the Hat". I'm a hardcore fan of the Hat so to me those are fighting words! This place is like a typical burger joint, with a salad bar as an added twist. Pretty cool and very clean and well kept. The staff was very nice too. I ended up ordering a pastrami, scoped out the food that they had and under their "specialties" they had a gyro. The pastrami was SURPRISINGLY good. And although I wouldn't rate it higher than the Hat's (I know, I'm biased), I'd have to say it was a lot better than most other places ***cough***Tommy Pastrami***cough*** and other local delis I've tried. I was wondering if I had been to a wrong restaurant? Is the beef organic USDA grade AAA+ prime rib?? NO. it turns out that the price for the burger itself only is 5.. meaning, if I ordered nothing else, it should be 5 something. Because i wanted onion rings (substituted cost +1.19) and a soda, it makes it a "combo order" Combo burgers are charged automatically 7.35 + soda + onion rings + and she charged me 1 something each for + avocado & + bacon. I was really confused, WHY WOULD YOU PUT A "AVOCADO BACON BURGER FOR $5 SOMETHING WHEN IT BECOMES 7.35 AUTOMATICALLY IF YOU WANT TO EAT IT WITH ANY FRIED ITEM AND A SODA???? WTF? they could have just charged for the substitution cost, + soda, + onion rings. I was very frustrated as i wait for the food to come out, so I asked, and she repeats the same aforementioned logic (?) then the person brings my plate with the burger + onion rings. puts the plate down hard and the rings drop/slide off the plate. she said "sorry" but didn't even bother to ask me if she'd pick up the dropped onion rings. I just picked them up. burger was actually pretty decent but i have not been so frustrated at a burger joint as this one before. Never again. I am basing this review on the years of patronage that myself and my family have experienced. Bottom line is that this is a diner experience with a family type atmosphere. The best part about this place is that you can bring in a family of 4-7 and have plenty of space to enjoy your meal without feeling cramped. The servers are extremely friendly (although they recognize us due to frequent visits) and will always do what they can to server you and accommodate any of your needs. My recommendations would the the 1/4 Cheeseburger special (fries are amazing) This place ranks up there for me with fries because I like the bigger fries and it would take 2-3 fries of the major fast food chains to measure up to these. read more

This is one of my favorite places to go for lunch. I always have the bacon avocado cheese burger with a side of zucchini fries. Everything about this burger is so satisfying and gets me so full that I want to take a nap in the warehouse after lunch. But I can't! Inside are these old skool booths and sticky tables, but there is a nice patio outside that I like be instead. A bit on the pricy side for what is essentially fast food. Their BBQ Chicken Sandwich with a side salad ran me over 9 dollars, and took awhile to cook. And after I received the sandwich, I found it disappointingly standard. It was cooked well enough, but there was absolutely nothing that stood out about it, except perhaps the fact that it was over incumbered by far-too-sweet BBQ sauce. It hit the spot, but I'll probably try something else if I am to return. But really, everything about this place just seems incredibly standard. From the wait-staff, the food, the decor; I don't think I've ever seen so much plaid & beige in my life. Everything just felt remarkably stale, and almost as aged as their customer base. At lunch, this seems to be a strict "two-thirds diner": two thirds of the customers are over two-thirds of a century old. The place is clean, the booths are comfortable, it's quiet enough to do homework, and the breakfast is satisfying without being too big to finish. What puts it over the top to five stars, though, is that, unlike "the bear restaurant" or that international place that has pancakes, this place has orange marmalade! So many places have cut back to having just grape jelly and strawberry jam. They cut out the third leg of the breakfast spread triumvirate: Orange Marmalade. Here, they respect tradition and give homage to the much maligned marmalade group. Shame on all other breakfast joints who have lost faith. John's Place keeps it real. read more

Let me start by stating that while there are plenty of dishes to satisfy a wide range of food cravings at John's place; almost nothing that you find here will blow your mind. As just about every other review will tell you, the prices here are near unbeatable. However; after living in brea and frequenting John's place regularly for the better part of 15 years I'm not afraid to tell you that the food is a little plain. Most of the dishes are pretty tasty, but you have to get creative and add a personal spin to the featured plates if your intent is to add a staple to your regular eating habits. Decent food in a dated locale! Parking: Strip-mall friendly, with lots of parking spaces. Atmosphere: Average size eatery that is well-lit. On my particular visit "The Fish" was playing in the background which I could have done without. The decor seems dated and quirky. Service: Friendly, prompt, and courteous service. Food: I ordered a bacon avocado burger and a soda. The food was served up quick and was very tasty. The quality of the burger was on par with Brea's Best for about the same price. The bacon perfectly crispy and the avocado was just right. I normally travel to Brea's Best, but this place is much closer to my workplace so the convenience is nice. An extra bonus is food is brought to you with a pseudo-wait service similar to Carl's Jr. If it weren't for the dated decor and religious-themed radio background noise, John's Place would have gotten 4-stars. read more
