WOW. What a plaaaaaace!!! Jeez. If you want a fantastic steak dinner that will knock your socks off, this is where you want to be! First of all, the service is just outstanding. We ordered items that we wanted to basically share - there were 7 of us. The waiter portioned out our servings individually. It was a unique touch. We ordered Joseph's salad - unbelievable. The chunks of slab bacon, House dressing, and fresh basil was a winning combination. We ordered steak and salmon dishes which were absolutely delicious in every way. Perfectly seasoned well cooked just perfect! Dessert was chocolate mousse cake and it was so amazing! The perfect ending to an exquisite meal. I really wanted to be able to give a better review, but after taking a few days after we dined to not have a knee jerk reaction, I settled on the two stars. To start off the restaurant was not very busy so there is no excuse for a lack of service. While we dined it almost felt like if we were an inconvenience. Our server barely recognized us and barely even spoke with us. We went to celebrate my son's birthday but he wouldn't have known because he barely spoke with us. For starters we placed an order for the thick bacon. I was sort of shocked to have the bacon served to us in several pieces as opposed to just the slab of bacon being brought to the table. It was already pre-cut. For our entrees we ordered the Porterhouse for two and a order of lamb chops. Everything was cooked at the right temperature but the steak was just average. When I go to a steakhouse, I am not upset to pay at a premium but I do expect the steak to be better than just average. My girlfriend enjoyed her lamb chops. For our sides we had the Mac-n-cheese, French fried and creamed spinach. The sides were fine with the exception of the creamed spinach. The creamed spinach was more on the brown side rather than green. To end the evening we had dessert, I ordered the Creme brûlée which was cold and just not that good. Overall, I was not shocked at the tab at the end of the meal because I expected it to be expensive but the overall experience and the food just did not seem to match the pricy tab. read more

First time here after hearing so much about it over the years. Many windows provide a well lit dining and bar area, despite the dark wood- old style steakhouse decor. Actually reminiscent of Richter's Cafe in New Haven which was The Tap Room for the old Taft Hotel. A pleasant and accommodating owner/server/bartender was personable and engaging despite the fact that he was the only person there. The drinks were well prepared and nicely sized. We celebrated a 48 year anniversary in business last night and it was fantastic! All of the appetizers we ordered were amazing. We got the slab bacon, the salad and the seafood cocktail ...absolutely delicious.Our Waiter Paul,was knowledgeable and friendly and helped to make it a really fun celebration! The steaks were cooked to perfection, the lamb chops were great and mashed potatoes were also delicious.. We couldn't resist and had the tartufo , apple strudel and coconut sorbet for desert. I read many of the reviews before deciding on Joseph's for a send-off party for a colleague with 7 other guests. I have to tell you, I think anyone who rated this restaurant below 4 stars was at a different restaurant. Not only was the food superb, but the service was absolutely impeccable......attentive without being a bother. Granted, a dinner here with appetizers and drinks will set you back over $100 per person; but as the saying goes, "you get what you pay for." What we "got" was as good an experience as any steakhouse experience I have had in NYC (Keane's; Peter Luger's), Philly, Dallas, Atlanta, etc. My favorite steakhouse for over 30 years has been Bern's steakhouse in Tampa, FL., and while Joseph's might not be quite at that level, they are very close. Recommendations: Joseph's Special Salad - really, really good Porterhouse - the two colleagues who had this steak said it was their best ever Bone-in Ribeye - well-marbled and fabulous flavor; cooked perfectly Bacon-wrapped filet - colleague who ordered this started to become annoying with telling everyone how great it was Mashed potatoes - just perfect; creamy and no lumps at all I will absolutely be back to Joseph's in the near future, even if I am traveling on a business trip and dining by myself.....it was that good. read more

What a major disappointment, and a place I will never return again. For starters: ** COVID-19 spacing is not followed - there was far less than 6 feet between us and the other diners. Staff wasn't very friendly. Didn't feel welcome nor did we want to extend our stay any longer. Steak was not seasoned at all....not even salt and pepper. I've also seen far better cuts of steak with less fat and grizzle. If you're charging top prices for steak then deliver a quality meat. Granted, you have a salamander and you can sear steak....that's great but the steak was still a major disappointment. Fried onions were too oily. That's what happens when the oil is not up to temperature when frying. We both felt sick after dinner. Appetizer was nothing special at all. 2 overcooked shrimp cocktail, a lump of unseasoned crab meat, 2 slices of mozzarella and 2 slices of tomato. No basil. No seasoning. No drizzle. And the cocktail sauce was awful. Felt like it was sitting in a fridge for weeks. No ambiance at all. Extremely loud patrons shouting over one another to be heard. Maybe I'm a Johnny come lately to review, but - I'll add my 2 cents.... This restaurant isn't cheap (no steakhouse really is) and you get what you pay for most of the time. The steaks - cooked nicely to temp with about the crust you'd expect from the gas grill at an air Bnb that you rented. Certainly did the meat no justice. The steak (billed as dry aged) had moderate flavor, average tenderness and just enough gristle to leave me curious as to why people rave about dropping $60+ on a ribeye?? An added side of fries were ok, nothing great, but for the price, I'm looking for great. Creamed spinach- you all remember the exorcist ? Nuff said. Salty as hell too. Caesar could have come from local bodega's grab and go fridge and would have been just as good (possibly better). We took in a decent bottle of wine, and the server was attentive and good for us. The vibe is what you'd expect of an old school steak place, dark wood, booths with high backs, bar seats maybe 10? For 2 ppl. Was about $375 - just not worth the money for my taste. Burrata and Shrimp cocktail for apps. Delicious and plenty for 3. The porterhouse for 2 was absolutely fantastic and seasoned perfectly. My daughter had the chicken francaise and it was equally as good. Dessert we enjoyed the Joseph Sundae and the whipped topping Schlag was sinful. Trust me, order it. A superb steakhouse that is in a cozy building with brick walls, lots of wood and windows. There is a beautiful wooden bar in the front with tables covered in linen cloths. It almost feels like you are transported to NYC. Waiters wear the long white aprons over black clothing and are very attentive to diners. I visited on a week night when it was not so busy and had a delicious steak meal with two friends. We ordered to share the filet with mushrooms, asparagus and Caesar salads. Everything was delicious. Joseph's makes an in house steak sauce that really compliments the beef. We plan to return with a big appetite so that we can try the porterhouse steak next. Best thing about the large steaks is that you can share them, just request to have them sliced and served family style. read more

I have heard a lot about Joseph's from many different people so we finally decided to head down for Valentine's weekend. With all the hype we knew it had to be great. Joseph's carries our favorite bottle of wine, so that was great. The waiter was very nice, actually all the staff was nice.. I know they are known for steak but mine was almost too burnt to the point it didn't taste that good. My boyfriend got the filet mignon was as actually a huge piece and wasnt as black as mine.. it was good... we got the appetizer shrimp and crab meat.. It was bland and it really not something I would order again. They do have great crackers they give out with bread. The apple desert was very very very good. I will be back to give it another try and hopefully the food will be more to my liking. I can understand why people enjoy it, the atmosphere is nice, so we'll have to try again. read more

We were in Connecticut for a few days, and one evening found ourselves at Joseph's. I had looked it up on Google, it sounded good, so we went. We parked down the street and walked to the restaurant. A slender man with long hair in a ponytail, a pencil mustache and a tiny, crooked soul patch met us at the door. He was busily buttoning up his shirt as he told us the place was not open yet. Google may have said 4:30, but it wasn't open til 5. This fellow was very friendly and welcoming, except he could not let us in until 5, even to sit at the bar and enjoy a drink. (He turned out to be the bartender.) When we returned at 5 we were seated quickly (we were the only party at that time) and our waiter appeared to take a drink order. Mrs. P had a Cabernet--Joseph's has an extensive wine list, and the waiter recommended something good--and I had a Heineken Zero. I do not drink alcohol, so any restaurant gets a few points for stocking at least one N/A selection. Joseph's has an old style steakhouse vibe, plenty of dark wood, red walls, and immaculate tablecloths and heavy tableware. We found, after a bit, that it even carries some of that feel of a gathering place for crime bosses. As we were perusing our menus, two men met in the middle of the dining room. Straight out of central casting, with contented guts in sharkskin suits, beefy jowls, carefully trimmed hair, they stood toe to toe and shook hands, as if they had not seen one another for years. Their conversation was loud and self-satisfied, and produced almost verbatim here: 'How was your day?' 'I had a good day.' 'Ha ha ha . . . a good day?' 'I had a very good day.' 'And our friend?' 'Our friend? We did some business, we had a meal, and he went back to Jersey.' 'Back to Jersey? He's lucky he got a meal.' These two sat at a table near us and continued their conversation. It was like dinner and a show. Our appetizer was a large piece of burrata atop a slice of tomato, with some strips of red pepper and a bit of pesto. There was little elegance in the preparation, these bits just kind of set upon the plate. Especially disappointing was the slice of tomato, clearly a hardball variety such as anyone can buy at the grocery store, here in the middle of summer when so much delicious fresh produce is available. But it was tasty enough with the selection of warm breads the waiter brought out. We both had salads, and this was where I began to worry. Mrs. P is not a huge fan of salads, and ordered hers with blue cheese dressing, while I asked for a vinaigrette. The salad was mostly romaine and iceberg, completely inundated with bits of the same uninteresting chopped tomato and way, way too many blue cheese crumbles. Seriously, I ate all of the greens and left a whole pile of cheese bits and pieces of hardball tomato on the plate. Mrs. P had the 20 oz. ribeye, while I ordered their standard steak, whatever that means. They present this steak already sliced off the bone and cut into pieces, which is a nice touch. But my medium rare was much closer to rare, and not nearly as tender as I expect in a top-quality steak. Furthermore, there was little of interest in the taste, neither a very deep char flavor nor anything in the seasoning to write home about. It was just an okay steak. All in all, a good dinner with good service. But here's the thing . . . it cost well over $300. When Mrs. P and I travel, we like to splurge on good food. I do not begrudge a dinner in the range of hundreds of dollars. But the quality of Joseph's did not come nearly up to that mark, and thus my mediocre rating. read more

Ordered the porterhouse for two, medium rare. It came out more close to medium well. You would think for the price they could at least cook it right. Besides it being extremely overcooked, it tasted okay. The sides should've been included for the price. The crème brûlée for dessert was delicious, but the pecan pie seemed to have been microwaved... This has been a favorite of mine for many many years now. So good in fact I drive almost an hour to get to it. Don't get me wrong, it's not a cheap evening but I have always been a firm believer of you get what you pay for. My formula is Special salad and bacon for appetizers. There's plenty of chopped bacon in the salad so if you wanted to skip the bacon app you won't be missing out on too much. Then I go with steak for 2,3,or 4 depending on the size of the party. They do offer more than just steaks but it's hard to venture away from the t-bones when you know they are right around the corner waiting for you to enjoy them. They offer potatoes mashed or home fries style. Both are great. Creamed spinach is fantastic. I actually never had it in my life before until I went here for the first time over 10 years ago. Deserts and drink also are excellent. Don't pass this place up, it's amazing for a special occasion dinner splurge! read more

Fun martial dialogue/bickering might include how many Yelp stars to give after dining. "You should never give 5 stars the first time." hubs says. "This isn't Manhattan, honey." (touché!) I maintained the menu is a PDF and probably never changes. He said that a good steakhouse should always serve the same favorites. He commented that the waiters have been here forever. I said that things could get stale. As staff gets older, things could get slower. Joseph, our waiter who's been there forever never stopped cruising the tables asking how everything was, personally collecting dishes and entertaining everyone with relevant, yet funny stories (but never too intrusively). Unobtrusive yet aware, the service never wavered. Our bone-in rib eye steaks (an oxymoron) were cooked as ordered, and both had the dark crusty exterior of dry-aged beef. The delicious mashed potatoes had teeny lumps which proved they weren't pre-frozen (give me that recipe!!!), and the creamed spinach were exactly as the hubs had created for Thanksgiving. The online reservation system remembered that I said it was for a birthday and Joseph presented us with a candle on our dessert and the everybody sang Happy Birthday to hubs. When I contacted to see whether a hamburger from the lunch menu could be served for dinner, they made it clear that they don't serve lunch after 3 p.m., which I understood. So I ordered the chopped sirloin steak, only to learn that my $28 order was actually a burger "steak." My complaint wasn't with the unseasoned, uncooked "steak" but rather with the rude man who picked up the phone and scuffed at us for seeking an explanation. We requested to return the "steak," give us another or refund our money, and he thought it was amusing. If you're going to charge your customers for a burger and call it a "steak", at the very least make sure it's cooked properly and seasoned with anything other than that man's sarcasm. We did become sick from the bite we took to taste the "steak," which he found amusing. Your menu warns against consuming raw meats, but he apparently didn't get the memo. The food was quite good. I wanted to love it. We went for an anniversary dinner and requested a good table for that. They sat us in the bar room, didn't acknowlege the anniversary, and brought out the wrong wine from what we ordered which, surprise, just happened to be $30 more than the one we ordered (both bottles are retail $14 malbecs). So if you're going to spend upwards of $150 a head it's gonna take more than a good porterhouse to do it. Food gets a 4, service and am ambiance really blew it here. read more

Used to be our go to steakhouse without going to NY. Oh boy. It's kept the look but nearly everything everything else slipped. My martini was full of ice, the shrimp were small and, worst of all, the meat was mediocre. Fatty and you have to beg them not to bring it out raw. On a Monday night at 6:30 they were busy, but we were able to snag a table in the bar area with no reservation. We started withe the bacon appetizer, which isn't really the first thing I would have picked, but I could see why people love it right away. For dinner I enjoyed the Chicken Francese with mashed and asparagus. Everything was so tasty, I couldn't stop eating. I nearly finished my entire plate, which is a little rare. If you want a traditional NYC style steakhouse with fabulous food, professional and top notch service and an upscale evening with great wine and all the accoutrements this is your spot. I have been to many, not all, of the NYC famous steakhouses for both personal and business events. I think Joseph's captures a lot of that feeling. It does this in downtown Bridgeport close to a couple of local theaters as well. Both the Bijou and the downtown cabaret are in walking distance, so is the courthouse for you jurors looking for a great steak salad. I prefer to head to Joseph's with the entire family or with a few couples. They do a great steak where you get enough for 4,6,8 people and they will do some rare and some med well if that what the group wants. They do this with like a porterhouse/t-bone and they split up the filet from the strip giving everyone some of each. When we go as a group the seafood apps are awesome - I don't do oysters but some friends have enjoyed them, I like the lump crab meat and shrimp cocktail. The steak salad as mentioned earlier is a fabulous lunch option or for someone who prefers not to eat family style. By the way the actual menu item I ordered was the arugula with Gorgonzola and I asked to add steak. The sides have always been great. My last time I had some great mushrooms, fried onions and creamed spinach. Don't take this as a knock on the backed or mashed potatoes because I just don't eat them. I can't finish this review without mentioning the staff. I am always surprised, even though I fully expect it. The team is classy, professional and they make you feel really special as a guest. I usually come to Joseph's on very special occasions and have always been very happy with my experiences here. Ambience wise, there is not much to write home about it has a old school vibe. Service was good, the waiters are very prompt and nice, engaging in conversation with customers. I have tried the steak for two (porterhouse) which turned out to be more then enough for three people. It is borderline perfect--- Ordered it medium well and it came with a perfect crust on the outside and a tasty steak sauce to pair it with. I have also tried the salmon entree which came with mashed potatoes and asparagus. This dish is by far my favorite on the menu. This tasted like heaven in my mouth ! This is a top of the line steakhouse so be ready to pay. I definitely will come back but based on the price point, make it a special treat to myself once a year. The atmosphere and the ambience does not match the price of the steaks.I have no issues spending money on food if the food is good or service is good and the atmosphere is fun but this was not the place this place reminds me of an old Irish pub. I came here with a party of five they tried to stick us at a table for four in the bar area and just add a chair on the end. We had to wait 45 minutes past our reservation just to get the table.
