Unfortunately I had a terrible experience here. Not the food, but the manager and service were absolutly atrocious and don't understand they work in the service industry. I went here with a group of 15 people. Our bill was in excess of $2500... we brought our own wine. They told us ahead of time they would not charge us for cork fees, yet they charged us over $180 in cork fees and an automatic 20% gratuity on top. When we asked the manager (politely) to work with us on he cork fee, he declined and got in my face. I work hard for my money and enjoy spending it with establishments that appreciate my business. Unfortunately this quarterly outing will be shifted to another steakhouse in the area since this place doesn't appreciate anyone's business. I will no longer be a patron of Joseph's. We had an early dinner here before a show at the Klein. The prices are high, which is fine. As we just entered new COVID guidelines our waiter was very quick to assume everyone was vaccinated, though we were with a 13 year old. My mother is actively undergoing chemo, so I would have liked if the waiter asked before taking off his mask, which he was wearing incorrectly anyway. As someone with Celiac disease, I am very clear with waitstaff as to what I cannot eat. Our waiter seemed clueless at to what "gluten free" means and said he asked the chef, but based on how I felt later that night, he did not. Stopped it here as it happened to be conveniently located on the drive from my parent's house where I spent Christmas back to Brooklyn and it wasn't a McDonalds. While I will give it points for its proximity to the highway, its convenient parking, and its fairly fast and decent service...it just doesn't have much else going for it. The prices are ridiculous for the quality of food served here, with every entree clocking in at 20+ dollars, and any of the decent cuts of steak at $30+. For those prices one would expect amazing meaty goodness, but the food was definitely nothing to write home about. The steak sauce tasted like supermarket quality shrimp cocktail sauce. Peter Luger's in CT. In fact, better than Peter Luger because the restaurant is 1) clean and 2) the sides are as good as the entree. I don't understand the bad reviews here. I have been to Joseph's at least a dozen times and they have never disappointed me. Every detail of the menu invokes Peter Luger's, but having been to both I can attest that Joseph's has steak that is just as good, and every other aspect of the restaurant is better. The steak is amazing. AMAZING. The steak for two (or more) is a great way to try out the filet and the NY strip. Close second is the creamed spinach. WOW. The thick cut bacon is great, but so big and heavy that it seems like an impossible challenge to try that before your steak. The baked potatoes are large, definitely shareable like the other sides. The mushroom caps are just OK--here, the butter overwhelms all the other flavors. I haven't tried the non-steak entrees, but with steak this good it's hard to find a reason to switch it up. To steal a line from the waiter, it isn't Joseph's chicken house! The wine selection is extensive and includes many delicious and affordable options. The service is outstanding. There is usually free parking on the street right in front of the restaurant, but if not there is a pay lot next door. It isn't exactly a walkable neighborhood--but there again they have the edge on Peter Luger's. I wouldn't walk around that part of Brooklyn at night either! read more

3.5 stars This place is like Peter Luger's but not as good. Not bad, but definitely not fantastic. My group started out with a tomato mozzarella salad (yum!), thick cut bacon (double yum!), and one of Joseph's "special" salads (are you kidding me?). $18.50 for the "special" salad gets you a huge bowl of chopped iceberg lettuce (like you get on your sandwich at Subway) with a few tomatoes, gorganzola cheese, bacon, and dressing. Granted, both salads were plenty big to share and a tablemate did point out that you could go somewhere in Westport and pay $15/pp for a salad 1/4 of the size so I guess that's a valid point too. I just found the chopped iceberg lettuce hard to get over. On to the steaks. There were 5 of us and we got 2 "steak for two's" and a ribeye. That is A LOT of meat. The meat was cooked perfectly but I noticed it all was very fatty. Now I would expect that on a ribeye but for the other two to have a big ring of fat around all the edges surprised me. Maybe it's because I've been on a grass-fed beef kick lately but my ribeye didn't have much flavor compared to what I've been cooking for myself. We also got home fries to share and no one was really a fan. Way too dry and overcooked. Ladies, I am sure you will appreciate, as I did, the attractive waiters. Just a complete disappointment. I used to be a big customer of Josephs Steakhouse for almost my whole childhood. Having moved away I came back to Connecticut to visit family and we decided to visit a old tradition, that being said we made a reservation at Josephs. First off, the whole dinner was just not good. To start the host sat us at the bar to wait for our table. I did what any person would do is order a drink. According to the bartender I looked too young and he refused to serve me a glass of wine. It is my fault considering I did not bring my ID, so I understand, it was the matter in which he did it. Continuing to say I'm not 21 and laugh about it when I am 23 years of age. Saying its suspicious I wouldn't put my ID in my purse. Women forget things, let it go and stop fishing! My family was baffled. We sat down and I ordered the Josephs appetizer which was crab meat, tomato and mozzarella, and two shrimp. Eh, the Palm, WolfGangs and Capital Grille sound better to me at this point. The oil and vinegar were so bland and watered down.. let it go considering this is a steakhouse so I ordered a bone in rib eye rare. I was so excited for the buttery melt off the bone salty rib eye I order in all other steak restaurants.. The steak came and was so dry. I was wrestling it trying to cut it, absolutely no flavor, not aged beef, not fresh at all. It reminded me of when you microwave meat. Just not good, between the tasteless food which I am kind of skeptical about considering dinner was 400 dollars, bullied at the bar, and a tasteless appetizer and having to ask for my side dish twice , I will not be returning. No way to treat a young lady who made a reservation for her parents. What a shame, I'll go to capital grille next time and order my Moet Chandon with my melt off the bone rib eye. They should be a little more respectful of their customers, and to deny me a seat at the bar so I had to stand!!!! Shame! read more

I took my wife out last night for my birthday. We've made it a tradition to come here on my birthday and have done so for the past few years. Always love the food and service never had an issue until yesterday. The appetizers and drinks were great, but the steaks were extremely disappointing. I ordered the house special steak for two mid rare, and I am pretty sure they gave me a steak for one that was definitely over cooked. It was the smallest steak for two I've ever seen, and I finished the entire thing easily. Normally I'd send it back, but my wife's steak was even worse. She ordered a bone in rib-eye dry aged, a special of the day, and got an off the bone NY strip. Now. The waiter although was a great guy overall tried convincing us that a NY was actually a ribeye. No way. They both have a very unique shape and what she got was a NY. They took it off the bill which was nice, but I'd rather have what I ordered for both of us. Very disappointed over yesterday's birthday dinner. Don't think I'll be back. It's one thing to make a mistake. Another to try to sneak a lesser option in on your guests. Especially in today's world. Went to Joseph's steakhouse for dinner. The food was great. I had the Bone-In Rib Eye my husband had the surf & turf. Both were cooked to perfection and delicious. The creamed spinach was absolutely amazing! I gave this place 3 stars because while the food was great, the atmosphere was a bit awkward. We are a Latin couple. While dining, we felt we were being stared at the entire time and being talked about under everyone's breath making us a bit uncomfortable. We heard conversations from the staff saying the N word multiple times. We do not plan on dining at this restaurant again, which is unfortunate because we did enjoy the meal however we do not condone racism like what we witnessed. read more

We ve had dinner there a week ago and then read the comments. Mixed feelings is the most appropriate. The portehouse for 4 was really good, and we enjoyed the sauce. Fatty? It sure was, but isn t it what you expect from a great steak? Above average french fries, excellent spinach, i wouldn t critizise the food. Service was good, and definitely not what i ve read here. Just ate there tonight, my experience of the quality if the food was terrible. I have to think that it was a one off as I have friends that eat here and rave about it. Ordered Porterhouse for two, it came out and it looked a little different to me, a good 1/4 inch around the exterior was brown and then the center was almost raw. I sent back some to be cook more for my friend while I ate it as it was, it tasted different to me than what I am used to, and I have eaten in many steak houses. It was only while driving home that I remembered when I have tasted meat like this. In my younger days before learning how to cook a steak I have on occasion tried to defrost in the microwave. It gives the meat the funny taste that was what I could taste, it would also account for the exterior being over cooked and the inside raw. I have no problem with them using frozen steaks, hell I would not have minded if they had cooked it from frozen. However for them to microwave the meat to semi defrost it then put it on the grill is very bad. The only other explanation can be that the meat was bad. read more

We only go to Joseph's for special occasions and haven't been in around 2 years. We went to celebrate my mother's retirement tonight and I have to say we were very let down this time and will take a while for us to come back. Our server had us laughing in the beginning seemed like a nice guy but we were quickly let down. We order two bottles of wine and one bottle he delivered to the table was opened and already had a glass severed from it before coming to us - lucky we noticed that and sent it back to get a full bottle of unopened bottle. Then we ordered the special appetizer of crab, shrimp and tomato and basil for $25 and the tomatoes were extremely under ripe (for a $25 appetizer I would think they would serve red ripe tomatoes). My husband, brother in law and I had the porterhouse for 3 and ordered it medium rare, it came out as medium well which to us that takes away all the great flavor and paying that much for a steak you expect it to come out cooked properly. Our waiter never asked how everything was and was quick to clear off our table even when people were still eating. He quickly told us the desserts when someone (the person we were celebrating) was missing from our table. He didn't ask us if we wanted coffee so once we realized we forgot to order coffee I had to find him and put in that order. I don't know if we will be back after that experience. Bottom line is if your at a high end restaurant paying high end prices you expect more. Sorry we were very disappointed :( read more

Love this place! Excellent steaks, attentive and professional staff and management with a really welcoming attitude. I'm not sure where the information at the top of the page came from, but this place is fairly casual, not dressy. There are plenty of locals there in jeans and every time we've eaten at Joseph's there have been families there complete with kids, so I don't Know why the info says not good for kids. The grilled bacon appetizer is great and the steaks are cooked to perfection. Like most good steak houses, you order sides separately from the steak. The veal chop is enormous. This place reminds me a lot of Peter Luger's in Brooklyn, without the long commute and the parking hassles. The bacon appetizer and dry aged steaks that they serve here are delicious, as are the desserts. The waiters and bar staff are cool, too! The porterhouse steak for two was excellent. The best we both had, very fresh and tender. The meat melted in your mouth, we order it raw. The steak was better than the Black Angus, however the services was not too good. The large waiter was very friendly however, you could tell he was not very professional at this job. At first we were the only ones in the restaurant, and he gave us the smallest table by the window. I was so cold from the draft that I say something to him and he said he could close the blinds, I finally said could we just get another table. The food was very tasty. We had 3 appetizers; arugula salad, tomatoes, mozzarella & basil, and crab meat cocktail. All were great. For desert we had the creme burlee and key lemon pie. Both very yummy. My friend had red wine which he said was excellent considering it came not from a fresh bottle but ordered by glass. My ice tea and then hot tea (again I was cold) was just regular. My favorite waiter forget to bring me milk for the tea, but again he never even asked. So we would have given a 5 star rating however the waiter was not professional so I am subtracting one point. So we would both definitely come back here again, even though the large waiter is disappointing. Hopefully over time he will get better. He told us he used to sell printers, so maybe he is just in between jobs, it's shows. The area of downtown Bridgeport on Sunday by Joesph's Steakhouse is very quiet. read more

Everyone I have talked to Raves about the steak here. I must say that's a connoisseur of good steak I was greatly disappointed with my steak Caesar salad for $25. Not only did the steak have a bad aftertaste, the salad itself was the size of a side salad. The service was mediocre compared to the bigger chains steakhouses. As a transplant that's has moved to Connecticut from South Carolina, it seems that I have found some of the most unfriendliness people in the restaurant business in awhile. I refuse to believe that it's anything more. Tonight when I sat at the bar for dinner and I was placing my order to the bartender/waiter, I ordered the chopped sirloin and asked for a salad substitute instead of fries but the waiter said they were not making salads, he didn't say I couldn't substitute but I could pay for one. While he was away from the bar, I asked another waiter, why were they not serving salads tonight and he stated they were and I told him the bartender stated they were not. However the waiter I asked did apologize for the confusion and when the bartender came back out he stated that he thought I didn't wanna pay for a salad. And when my food came out he never came back once and ask if everything was good, which I heard him ask a father and son whom was sitting behind me. However, the food was good even though I had to ask for another cocktail and water with my meal. The restaurant was not crowded and I was the only person sitting at the bar besides the father and son behind me. I will give this place another try very soon. To those in the restaurant business or any business, keep in mind that great customer service skill are a must when the public is paying for service. I just hope the service is better next time I'm there. read more

AWFUL AND COMPLETELY OVERPRICED!!! This is my 1st ever review written because I feel like we were robbed at this place! My wife and I have eaten at hundreds of restaurants and this one rates at or near the bottom. 1) The table - My wife and I get sat at a table that was so far crooked that we needed to move. Maybe 4-6 inches out of level. At least. I guess no big deal right? 2) Cold Bread served w steak sauce - Really? High end place and you can't heat up bread? 3) The wine - Tremendously marked up prices. Probably the some of the highest we have seen. SMH 4) The apps - $19 for cheap pieces of pork which is the grilled bacon. Not a fan of this. 5) The steaks - My wife gets a "Sirloin" that is freaking HAMBURGER MEAT slapped on a plate. Ummmmm wow. Honestly the best steak I've ever had in my entire life, practically melted in my mouth. Came all the way up from Greenwich CT ( totally worth the trek) with a party of nine and was throughly impressed with the servers, atmosphere and meal all together. We ordered the bacon, steak for 5, creamed spinach, mashed potatoes, mushrooms and home fries it was amazing. Parking is super easy got a spot right out front. 10/10 must go! Worst meal I ever had at what I've heard to be a classy and reputable steakhouse. Ordered a rib eye - medium rare. It was cooked right but tough. Really, for a $50+ steak. Sent it back. Waiter was kind but embarrassed. He asked if I wanted a filet mignon. That's not my favorite cut of meat but I said ok. He brought out a piece of steak that looked like a sirloin, and was equally tough as the rib eye. All I wanted was a tender piece of steak. I've had way better at Outback! Waitstaff incredibly rude. You would think you were in a Stalag with how regimented they are and no flexibility whatsoever. The bacon was good but the meals and the staff had a lot to be desired. They then whack you with a 20% gratuity whether you enjoyed the experience or not. How is that possible? I normally go with a large crew of people. On this night we had a large percentage of the restaurant attendees and you would have thought, with the way we were treated that we were a nuisance for requests. In this day and age with many options to chose from, shouldn't we be made to feel like our business is appreciated? Nope. Went with a party of 4. Salmon was ok, not great. Rib eyes were good but not great. Filet was not even close to the best I ever had. It was thin and appeared to look like a sirloin. Not a lot of flavor. The bacon was delicious. Crab meat appetizer was very fresh. Here's my biggest critique.....I gave my credit card to pay the bill prior to the bill coming because I did not want my guests to pay. I was given a slip to sign with the balance owed. There was no itemized slip of what we ordered. Found that strange that I was signing off on a tab and not knowing what I was charged for. Just because a guest hands a credit card to a waiter ahead of time doesn't mean they should just a get slip with the total owed. Being from Texas where steak is king, I can't lie and say that I didn't come in with high expectations. Sadly they did not meet those expectations but truly didn't even come close. Not even half way into my steak, I was recalling how much better my steak was just a couple weeks prior at TX Roadhouse! (Not kidding, they actually make a decent steak). Several executives and that my husband works with, rave about this place and a couple other people also recommended- I say stick with great seafood up here and leave the steak to the heart country and the south. 1. Steak ordered (filet mignon) medium, was more well done with no juicy center - all 5 of us at the table had exact same experience and issue with our steaks. I even considered A1 sauce. Very chewy instead of tender cuts of meat. 2. Even a bone-in steak , expecting more flavor, had the same turn out. 3. Bread brought to table was hard and given hard/ cold unspreadable butter. 4. Sides were luke warm, not delicious 5. Bill for that level quality of meal made us cry since we didn't love our meal plus some of did not finish our steaks. Don't buy the hype.
