The only thing authentic about Jose Mexican food is is the contents of their Tequilas. The food is a hot plate of melted cheese, unseasoned rice and over refried beans. On the plus side the chips were hot when we got them and the drinks were strong and cheap. The ambiance is stereotypical Mexican restaurant and yes they will put a sombrero on your head and sing you a birthday song in Spanish so there is that. The waitstaff seemed to always to be looking around for a table more interesting than your own. The food was far from authentic or even a remote attempt, the tacos were served in a unenthusiastic excuse of a flour tortilla while the fatty but dry meat was hidden by a large portion of lettuce as to attempt to hide what was underneath. I won't be going there again sadly unless I want a margarita and chips and salsa. read more

Our family of 5 enjoyed this for a Mexican dinner when we stayed in the Dells. I had the beef chimichanga and it was delicious. My family devoured the chips, salsa and cheese dip. Service was decent. We piled in 18 of us after a family Christmas celebration weekend at the Wilderness and they had no issues getting us seated, ordered and fed. It was great. For being what seems like a "generic" Mexican restaurant, the food tasted anything but generic. With 18 of us, we spanned a good portion of the menu and everything was rock star. We were only slightly disappointed that we couldn't try the al pastor, as that's a dinner menu item and they didn't have any prepared yet at 11am. So I subbed in the spicy chicken and was very pleased. My wife subbed in the owners suggestion of a steak/chorizo mix. Man that was good and not even the slightest bit greasy as chorizo dishes tend to be. Salsas were GREAT. When you ask for hot, its actually really hot, like habanero hot, so good. It wasn't some fake wimpy mid-west "hot". They also brought some queso for everyone, excellent. Even the creamy ranch-whatever sauce they had was good & usually I hate that stuff. I can only liken it to a southwestern ranch or the type of sauce some places bring with onion rings, but it didn't really have that usual ranch flavor (which is why I thought it was so good). I don't know about authentic because I have never eaten any Mexican other than in the US and never at someones Mexican granny's house, but this is definitely going to be a regular stop for our Dells trips. Jose's is a nice standard Mexican food choice in a city that doesn't seem to have a ton of variety. I really enjoyed the authentic style chips and dips that came with them. The actual entree to me was fairly standard as far as I would compare to other Mexican food choices. The Authentic name threw me off as I was expecting something different but this is a safe choice if you like most Mexican restaurants in Madison or nearby cities. read more

The food and service was fabulous! My family and I were staying at the Wilderness Lodge which is basically across the street. We thought we would check out something other than your typical burger/fries which is what most places offer around the Dells. Geovana was our server and she was patient, kind, and checked on us often. I ordered a combo plate with an enchilada and taco along with rice and beans. It was all yummy. This place is really good and it's fairly new. They have another restaurant in Baraboo. The margaritas were good, and the chips and salsa were tasty. They also had a chipotle ranch dip for the chips that was good. We had that don Burrito and it was huge! It was also really tasty. The combination dinners were also good and large servings. There were multiple tables in here with Latin American families which is always a good sign for a Mexican restaurant. We would highly recommend this place, and it was much better than the place down the road called Bobbers which we ate at earlier. read more

I came here after a bit of a drive and a scan of Yelp. Just by its name, Jose's sounded like the more authentic Mexican restaurant in town. I was greeted in a very friendly manner as I walked in the back door, both by a server and someone behind the bar. The food was quickly prepared and served and quite standard for an American Mexican restaurant, and the prices were quite reasonable. We called to make sure they had outdoor seating. I let them know we had a party of 6 and they said no problem. We drove 20 minutes and show up. There is a line with nobody social distancing and one of the hosts wearing her mask under her nose. She tells us there are no more tables outside the rest of the night. Huge disappointment and I could not get out of there soon enough. The food looks great but they need to take more care of their staff and customers during a pandemic. read more

This place is disgusting. I warned the people coming in, as I was coming out, about the food. They think it's justifiable to leave the patio door wide open so that flies fly all over your food the entire visit. The weird sour cream dip they bring out with the chips, at first, is bland and doesn't fit well with the "burnt-tasting, ultra-crunchy, old" tortilla chips. If that wasn't gross enough the lettuce on the taco-salad was wilted, old, and mushy... it was just plain gross. 15 minutes into the lunch, if the food wasn't disgusting enough, the flies really unsettled my stomach. The waitress/ manager made a huge deal about refunding the taco salad. I was about ready to make a scene if she didn't. And my step daughter's enchiladas were bland and disgusting too. Tacos and tamales were made with ground beef . The problem was the ground beef tasted like it was boiled in water. Both lacked flavored seasoning and sauce on tamale tasted like spaghetti o,s sauce. Terrible experience all around. We arrived around noon and there was minimal customers in the restaurant. That should have been a sign of what was to come. The hostess did not ask us if we wanted to sit at a booth or a table and when my husband asked if we could sit one booth over from other guests she rolled her eyes at him and did not say anything just went ahead and put the menus at the other booth. The music in the restaurant was blaring so loud my husband and I had a hard time hearing the server and ourselves speaking to each other at the table. When the food finally arrived it was extremely bland and nothing special at all. Literally Taco Bell would have been better. We ordered a burrito platter that came with rice and beans and the beans were very drippy in consistency and the burrito was just bland. Tortilla appeared under cooked, the ground beef was flavorless, just gross. The rice was OK. While waiting for a bit to get our bill we finally had to go to the front of the restaurant to retrieve it and there was 5 employees literally sitting at a bench at the front of the restaurant playing on their phones (one of them was our server). Unacceptable. As if this wasn't bad enough my husband and I had the feeling that we were not wanted there for we were white and the entire staff and other guests in the restaurant were latino. Very unfriendly staff and considering my husband is a very generous tipper almost every place we go they completely missed out. Avoid this location, go to the original one in Baraboo, this location's prices are inflated by at least $1-4 depending on what you get and in particular the large queso dip is half the size and costs more. I invited some family to join me in Wisconsin and we ate at this restaurant. We are of Hispanic descent and the food did not seem to be "authentic" Mexican. The beans seemed to be canned, and the small serving of steak pieces in the tacos we ordered was bland. Also be warned that a tip, or "service fee", will be imposed and added to your bill. My brother had provided a cash tip before we got the bill, and they added the "service fee" anyway. They can't say their woes are due to lack of staff, because there were plenty of young staff just standing around with apparently nothing to do. Disappointing experience. The food here was really bad and not authentic Mexican. The only good thing about the restaurant was the chips and salsa. One of our orders was messed up, they wouldn't let us sit outside even though they have outdoor seating, and the burritos were probably the most disgusting thing I have ever had. They were just a tortilla stuffed with (only) meat and topped with a red sauce that tasted like spaghetti o's sauce (definitely not salsa), and low quality mozzarella cheese. It's our annual Wisconsin Dells trip and we just had Jose's for the first time. It was outstanding and to be honest it's one of the best Mexican meals I've ever had. We had 22 of us and wrangling up 10 little ones can be quite a challenge so we just ordered to go and every single dish was delicious. Guac was A+. Chips & Salsa very good. From kids to adult all gave this meal an A. We ordered a number of different beef, chicken, steak dishes so honestly just about everything we can recommend on the menu.
