I'm thankful they have grown and expanded to the burbs because the drive to Chinatown to their 1st location would take me over an hour. This Naperville location is much closer for me and the food is delicious. And I've visited a handful of times to this location and it's always consistently good. Worst experience ever! I will never go back to this restaurant ever again! I ordered the Chinese broccoli and there was a maggot in my food! I immediately called the restaurant and explained my disgust and disappointment and they didn't even seem phased. The lady replied "oh that must have been from the broccoli", as if finding a maggot on vegetables is a normal thing! I asked for a refund after being asked if I wanted more food. I paid for my meal using a credit card however they would not refund my money unless I drove there to receive it in cash! When I arrived there was no apologies and I was asked to see a receipt. Joy Yee was like the Starbucks of boba tea in Chicago's Chinatown. If they didn't start the real fruit smoothie trend there, they definitely made it popular among young people. You can blend different fruits, adjust sweetness and toppings - I've tried a bunch of combos like strawberry mango, strawberry pineapple, strawberry watermelon, strawberry lychee would recommend any of those or be creative with your own! That is the thing to get here if you want a good experience. I think you can get better fruit and milk teas at other places. While the drinks are the attraction, Joy Yee's also has a large pan Asian menu, Chinese, Vietnamese, Japanese, Korean and Thai. Their Chinese is slightly more authentic than the other type cuisines, but I would call it Asian fusion. It's a good place for groups who can't decide since there's everything, but it doesn't mean they're good with everything. Recently, I had the honey walnut shrimp, pho and fried rice. Jumbo shrimp was used, which was generous. Pho and fried rice was generic. The broth had a strong sweet onion flavor and no herbs - it was more like beef onion noodle soup, pho-inspired. Fried rice was probably cooked on low heat so it seemed to be missing the fried aspect. All was edible and tasted fine, but disappointing if you're used to the traditional way these things are made. We had been going to Joy Yee for years to get their fruit smoothies. They had phenomenal smoothies always using fresh fruits. So rich and creamy. To my shock, I watched the person who had been making smoothies for years use powder instead of real avocado. We always paid a lot more for Joy Yee smoothies because they always used fresh ingredients. My last drink was horrible They have gone cheap. I watched the entire process as I always do from start to finish and saw everything they put in there, so there was no confusion. This was not "we use real avocados and a little bit of powder"... this was several big scoops of fake avocado powder with half a teaspoon of real avocado just to say they use real avocado. I had to take a pic and share. You see the powders right there that they were using a ton of... scoops and scoops. The fruit in the background they were very stingy. The waiter messed up the order, which I always try to excuse and I never get mad about or ask for a refund, just that it gets fixed. I knew it was the wrong drink immediately so I didn't touch it, the plastic seal they keep on the top was untouched and the drink didn't need to be thrown out. Dude got really pissed off about it and when he brought out the new drink he yelled out the drink I ordered to make sure it was correct. Always a pleasure at Joy Yee Noodle! The fresh fruit boba is all I get and they're delicious! My favorite combo is lychee mango with boba, but seriously, they have SO many different options. Don't be overwhelmed! You can basically have any combo you want! There are multiple locations in/near Chicago. I recently went to the one in Naperville and it was not very crowded. We have always loved this place--the food is excellent--but I left disappointed today. The bill was $120 for four people, one entrée each. Maybe they're adding a tip automatically, and I added a tip on top, so watch your bill. The worst thing is all the excess plastic waste, with plastic cups and straws automatically brought to the table. I feel like so much has changed since I started going to Joy Yees in Chinatown years (decades ago). I used to frequent this one when I worked in the area and stopped by often for lunch or for take out. Let's begin with the prices!! It has been a while since I've been to Joy Yees (a few months, possibly a year) and boy have the prices changed. I paid $41+ for me and a 3 year old to eat there. We had the beef cube over tomato rice, chicken lo mein, beef dumplings, and a bubble tea minus the boba. $42!?!? Their lunch special options have slimmed down significantly. Along with more "affordable" over rice options. I paid $13 for the beef over rice alone, which I swear was was cheaper. I just couldn't believe a lunch date out with a 3 year old would cost me that much... On to the food... so not only have the prices changed, but the quality of food has. The dumplings used to be pan fried and crispy. The dumplings I received were only crispy on onside. The beef cubes and large pieces, which were somewhat hard and salty. And the proportion of beef to rice is significantly different. There's definitely plenty of rice, but not as much meat. The lo mein was lacking any real vegetables besides onions and green onions. And there was a bit too much (what I believe was ) oyster sauce, making it too salty. The bubble tea was delicious as always, but priced at $5.25 with an addition $.50 for boba. The service was eh as well. There was a gentleman ready to take our order right away but I needed a few minutes to decide what I was going to order. We made eye contact when I was ready and he started to walk towards our table, but then 2 customers walked in. Not sure if he realized I was ready to order, We made eye contact again and I said we were ready, he held up his hands- in a stopped sign and nodded. But then pointed to the people coming in. There are so many people that work there, that could've helped seat the 2 new customers coming. Or he could've said "I'll be with you in a moment," instead of giving me the "Stop and talk to the hand" signal. I felt it was pretty rude... I love the huge drink and food menu at all Joy Yee locations. You have so many options to choose from! They have everything from Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai, Malay, Japanese, to Korean dishes. It's like one stop shop for everything! I went with avocado and durian, and it was pretty good! We got the fried fish tofu, calamari, won ton and spicy sauce, and the seafood udon. Sometimes, I can't help but get a burning, insatiable desire for hot Asian liquid down my throat and Joy Yee always, always fulfills that need. My very first experience, their mapo tofu clenched it. Hubs: "Oh, they have mapo tofu." The 90s came screaming back to me. Hanging out in his apt with me in ugly Umbro shorts, eating/gagging on the Mapo Tofu he made me. Oh, please NO! I ordered my food and he ordered mapo tofu with his polite "Please feel free to eat as much mapo tofu as you want." Yeah right. I kept eyeing his while I slurped my soup. The mapo tofu didn't smell like his. --It smelled better. I caved and inched my spoon forward. Suffice it to say, I loved it so much, Joy Yee became a bi-monthly rotation ever since. Lots of flavor depth and huge pieces of tofu and ground pork. It sounds vegetarian but this is definitely not. I'm not entirely sure if this is your place for Crab Rangoon or Sweet & Sour Chicken. But this is your place if you're ordering dishes such as Baked Rice with Chicken & Salted Fish (not on the menu but yelper Karen D suggested it. Delicious), my family's favorite Mapo Tofu, Korean Beef Kimchi over Stone bowl rice, or their Korean Kimchi Beef Fried Rice....because trust me, Kimchi should be eaten on everything! Their new restaurant is a vast improvement even if their closing was nearly the death of me. Much more space and much easier to come in and order take-out. It used to feel like quite the crush with even 3 people waiting. -No space to even stand. We went around 9p on a Friday; the main dining area wasn't crazy packed, but it was still 60-70% full. After a few minutes, we ordered a strawberry kiwi tapioca freeze. For whatever reason, these seem to take a long time, and this is the second occasion it's happened. There were a bunch of people near the front door, ordering drinks only, so the drink station was busy almost the whole time we were there. It seemed like some of them were getting their drinks first. I can see it both ways: get the drink only people out and away from crowding the already busy counter, but IMO, the dining room customers should get priority. Overall, they're spending more money. After 10-15 minutes, I asked the waiter about our drink. The process seemed to speed up after he realized I spoke Chinese, but it was still another 5 minutes before the drink was delivered. Soup was delivered before the drink, and we ordered food 5-10 minutes after the drink. My last visit there, we ordered a freeze near the end of the meal which took forever. Actually, we were asked to leave our table to wait for the drink as there were groups waiting, which is understandable. Again, drink took another 5-10 minutes while we were waiting up front. -Vietnamese platter "B" with cane sugar shrimp, lemongrass wings, beef, cucumbers, noodles $18.95. Overall disappointment. The rice vermicelli meals typically come with nuoc nam, liquid fish sauce. This one came with a sweet and sour sauce consistency, sweet sauce with no fish flavor. Cane sugar shrimp was good, wings were oily, beef had lemongrass flavor but could've been pan fried longer and add garlic. -Wonton chicken noodle soup $9.50. Huge portion. Can be shared with 2-4 people depending on appetite. Pretty good but salty wontons and broth. -Strawberry kiwi tapioca freeze $4.95. Loved it! I regret not going to Ming Hin down the road. The tables are not too close with each other anymore and there are more chairs added especially for people whose orders are for pick-up or carry-out. The bubble tea has not change! I didn't give them 5 stars because I ordered Spicy orange chicken and Spicy basil beef, both are delicious but not spicy! I have never seen so many employees work at a establishment and be so unhappy and rude never smile. The prices have gone up tremendously 16.95 now for fried rice 16.95 for chicken wonton soup 2 dollars for a coke total bill for one person 38.00 plus the 6.00 tip 44.00 for soup and fried rice, are you freaking crazy. Joy yee is good before when it comes to smoothy, now the cups is getting smaller and the flavor is getting frugal. We order there mushroom tofu, steak pho rice noodles the serving is very small. You have to dine in the area to satisfy your craving of Asian Fusion Cuisine. I expecting the black shaitaki mushroom unfortunately they are using the canned mushroom that there is after taste and to salty. Been a customer in Chicago Joy yee since 2004 but i dont know what happened to there service after this Pandemic. Maybe there old cook is already retired and the new ones are apprentice chef are fast and not as good as the old chef before. I think it was called Beef ramen pho? Same broth and ingredients as pho, except they used ramen instead of the normal pho noodles. I thought it was well-made, but it was nothing special. It had A LOT of beef and veggies which I liked. I finished it all because I wanted something hot since we were in the cold, winter season. I tend to try out different drinks when I come here as well. I remember getting a passion fruit w/ lychee and that was really good. SO got a regular lemon iced lemon tea but he didn't like where I ended up finishing it because I found it refreshing. Like many others have said, the food is pricey for what it is. But it's 2024 and what isn't these days? Everyone is raising prices (and lowering food quality). This is probably petty but I'd do more take out orders of they remodeled. It is busy at times and they have one tiny door with the smallest foyer inbetween. So leaving or entering the place there's almost always someone coming in or out as well and it's awkward to decide who should stand back and let the other through.
