We were driving home after a show in NYC and found most places closing at midnight. I searched for open restaurants in city island. PJ's wasn't on the main strip on city island. I was here with a friend on a Sunday Night. Had to try this place since I heard from friends of mine it was very good. Not quite sure why I'm giving a 2 star to this place, but I agree with the other yelpers the place looks like it's about to fall in the water, when you walk in you get a feeling of a scene of a Horror Movie, looking around yourself you think someone is gonna pop out and stab you with the chefs knife. Other than that the food was decent, the only think I liked was the baked clams. Huge baked clams. Make sure you order half dozen. I also ordered Stuffed Flounder with CrabMeat and baked potato on the side, which was very tasty, and too big so I took the rest home and that's when I found out there was a worm at the bottom of my flounder. There are a few simple rules I have when it comes to quality seafood; fresh, simply prepared, and fair price. JP's ruins it all. My parents said they used to frequent this place 15 years ago so when the chance came to share their love of the place with my brother and I, boy were we disappointed. Though tasty, the soft shells I got were very heavy and seemed deep fried as opposed to simply being lightly battered, tossed in a pan, and finished with some lemon. The brother's lobster tail was of fair size and pretty good quality but was mediocre in value. The greatest sin had to come from the broiled seafood platter for two shared by my parents. Though considered a "great value" I would rather put 90 dollars away for a top quality raw plate as opposed to 90 dollars worth of heaping mounds of overcooked shrimp, stuffed clams with 90% breading, greasy flounder that was untouched, some meh scallops and two large yet decent lobster tails. Though this alone might have garnered a two, the over 200 dollar price tag really knocks it down to one star quality as being one of the worst overall restaurant experiences I have been to. It looks like it will be a lot longer then 15 years until the next time we come back to this place. PS: There is absolutely no wireless signal on the island so research your restaurant choices before you get slapped with a 200 dollar bill courtesy of a mobile dead zone. read more

I went to a reunion there with my sisters. The decor was very interesting filled with antiques! The view was outstanding and the food served was very good and plentiful. Garlic bread was amazing. Music was soft and we had a great time. They asked what the occasion was and we were there for a retiree get together. They presented me with a bottle of champagne and a "JPs" tee shirt. And for the amount i paid for three people to eat $240 was a little high in my opinion. A little high priced especially with the bad service. The menu says good quality seafood costs but their prices need to be scaled back a bit. $61.95 for a pound and a half of crab legs is ridiculous. The seafood is good it's fresh just not worth the high price tag. Sangria is amazing but at $43 a pitcher that too is pretty damn expensive. I enjoyed everything I had however it's not worth the high prices and they should really renovate since they're rolling in the dough, the inside looks drab it's nice to have a water view but again still not worth it. While placing an order over the phone, we were asking about prices and the person on the phone told us that this was a high end restaurant. When we told him we understood and were just concerned about price difference on grub hub he said that he was busy cancelled the order and hung up on me. The person on the phone was both rude and disrespectful. You would think during this time where local business are hurting, a place like this would be more respectful towards potential customers. Expensive, food presentation medium, taste medium, ambience is so so, view is nice overlooking the water. My family was satisfied with the appetizer until we got to the garlic bread, it has hair tangled up in between the butter and the crust. I've been going to this restaurant for at least 35 years. I am never dissatisfied or disappointed when I go there. The Owner is my family. I've brought my family and friends here. We've celebrated many occasions there. It's right on the water facing the beach on the other side. One year we went there for the 4th of July weekend. There are some houses close to the restaurant. Some people came out of the back of there house that's also facing the water Orchard Beach. The decided to light fireworks I'll never forget the fire work went up in the Sky and came back down onto their house. No fire but it was. Dry scary sitting there eating and watching like it's a movie. The food has always been exceptional and it's always more than enough food. You are definitely going home with a doggie bag. The ambiance is amazing. My Son lives in this place from the first time I took him there. I'm just remembering that the Aquariums in front of the restaurant when you first walk in are not all there I always take pictures of them everytime I go there. They were a part of the family. After calling some places around, JP's stood out from the rest because the owner seemed to be so passionate and proud of his food and I respect that. So I went over and to be honest, I was skeptical but the owner John was nice enough to let me try their famous fried shrimp.
