The rice was a 10, moist and flavorful and just nothing bad to be said about the rice. Now for the collard greens. So much to dissect here, because I like big leafy greens vs chopped or dice, and they most certainly delivered in that regard so I was very happy there. HOWEVER... I couldn't tell if they were burnt or if they were over smoked!! Either way it messed up the flavoring for me and I couldn't enjoy them to their full potential, and THAT was a let down. So for the greens I'm teetering around a 6. I'd low key wanna try a sample again to see if they just had a bad day before wasting my time getting a while order and gambling with my taste buds. As for the Mac, I liked it, nothing super special to say or bad by any means either so I'm comfy giving the Mac an 8. The peach cobbler was a 7.5, my wife said it was too sweet for her but I enjoyed it. I feel since we took it to go and I reheated it by time I got back to the Telly, u can't really critique it too heavily cuz some things u need to have fresh in its natural state to give it a fair assessment, but nonetheless I enjoyed it and ate both mine and hers, and would definitely get it again. Old Hickory House traces its roots back to 1955, and the Tucker location, which opened in 1974, is now the last remaining Old Hickory House restaurant. The place still has that classic Southern barbecue feel with wood-paneled walls, comfortable booths, and decades of history around every corner. Fans of Smokey and the Bandit will also recognize the famous Diablo Sandwich connection. According to restaurant lore, Jackie Gleason ad-libbed the line, "Give me a Diablo sandwich and a Dr Pepper, and make it fast. I'm in a hurry!" during the movie. The line became one of the film's most memorable quotes, and Old Hickory House proudly keeps the Diablo Sandwich on the menu today. After hearing how spicy it is, I decided to leave that challenge for someone else. I ordered the sliced pork platter with collard greens and a bowl of Brunswick stew. Most of the pulled pork I eat is shredded, so I decided to try sliced pork for a change. I enjoyed the different texture, and it actually changed the way the barbecue sauce interacted with the meat. The pork was tender and smoky with some excellent bark mixed throughout. The barbecue sauce was different from both the Carolina-style sauces and the thicker sauces I'm used to back home in Ohio. It wasn't overly thick, had a flavor all its own, and complemented the pork well. Our server made sure we never ran short, bringing out extra sauce whenever we needed it. The collard greens were very good. The leaves seemed larger and darker than many collard greens I've had elsewhere, and they were flavorful enough that I enjoyed eating them just as they were without adding anything extra. I've now had Brunswick stew at three different Georgia barbecue restaurants during this trip, and Old Hickory House's version was the most stew-like of the three. It was thicker, chunkier, and loaded with visible tomatoes, corn, and meat. The menu describes it as "zesty," and that's an accurate description. It had a little more kick than the other versions I've tried this week and was clearly a recipe they take pride in. The service was excellent. Our server was attentive throughout the meal and took care of all the little things that make a difference. She checked on us regularly, brought out extra sauces without hesitation, and even offered to-go beverages before we left. Nothing felt rushed, and she made us feel welcome from start to finish. One final note: the portions were generous. In fact, I couldn't even finish all of the sliced pork, so part of it came home with me for later. Old Hickory House isn't trying to be trendy or reinvent barbecue. It's simply continuing a tradition that has been serving the Atlanta area for more than seventy years, and there's something refreshing about that. If you're looking for classic Southern barbecue, homemade Brunswick stew, and a restaurant with a genuine sense of history, Old Hickory House is well worth a visit. About a third of the tables had patrons, and I was able to be seated right away. They have a combination of booths and tables with the back room able to seat some larger parties. I ordered the Country Steak & Sausage Gravy 2 Egg Platter. It came with a cat head biscuit and the country fried steak was small and about the same diameter as the biscuit (see photo). But since it came with a muffin, and I added a side of 2 sausage patties, the meal was still filling. All items seemed to be good quality, properly cooked, and had decent flavors. The square blueberry "muffin" was very moist and a great flavor. They use big tumblers for soft drinks. The only item that wasn't great was the lemon slices in my drink: the rind was spotty and tinged with brown and the fruit texture and color showed too much age. My server was very inattentive and spent too much time watching the big screen TV. It took her a long time to take my order, she provided no refills, did not check in during my meal for any needs (the jelly caddy had two empty sections and my table had no strawberry jelly), it took a long time to get my check, and a long time to process payment.
