This place has Southern Homestyle cooking. I feel like a friend rather than a patron on every visit. The restaurant is very casual. The service was very quick in the kitchen. It was a slow start ~ we sat ourselves and it was a solid 10 minutes before anyone came to our table. Food was okay ~ the highlight of our meal was the corn and crab bisque and the yeast rolls. The fruit medley was canned fruit! And the green beans were canned mushy beans. For a local diner with affordable prices, it fits the mold but nothing I'd come back for. read more

First time to visit in a long time. New location is spacious and looks good inside. Started with fried green tomatoes and the crawfish Julie sauce. Very good tomatoes and an unusual sauce which was like no other I have had. It was a little spicy but very good. I recommend it. Entrees were smothered hamburger steak and country fried steak with gravy, each comes with two sides. Hamburger steak ok, country steak pretty tough. Okra greasy and cold, mashed potatoes instant, roll hard as a rock. Service was good. Not my idea of a country style meal. Probably won't be back. read more

We waited over 15 minutes for anyone to acknowledge us. While they waited on others who came in after us. We had to get our own menus and silverware. Only reason we decided to stay and give it a try was one smiling, friendly waitress who just happened to walk by. She was exceptional. Too bad the food was lousy. Greens were out of a can, cold. Highly recommend. The country fried steak and country fried chicken were both hand made and not frozen garbage. The white gravy on both was really good. All of the sides were all really good, and the price for me and my wife for meals and drinks was less than 30$. The only negative was the corn bread, that stuff was dense but that was just a "free side" so doesn't really count. read more

Mary's vs Judy's. Sep13, 2022 - 2 Stars. Mary's on Springhill Ave. I ate here couple of times about 2 years ago and remember it being pretty good and reasonably priced. Inside dining was in full use then & crowded for 2-3 hours with customers. But this time was quite different. I arrived at 12:30 but few coming thru the buffet cafeteria line. The food was cooked well and large portions were served but the flavor seasoning added to each item was very off for my taste: " yuck" to what otherwise could have been an excellent country home cookn type meal if they had just gone simple with just salt, ground black pepper & with some yellow onions (like Vidalias). The added seasonings were something like some kinds of Creole or Cajun or Slap-Yo-Momma or something like that. Just way unnecessary for a Southern country meal. I had Meat &3 with egg custard pie & No drink. Burger steak w/ brown gravy, field peas, turnip greens, green lima butter beans & cornbread. Each item had it's own distinctive different seasoning but none were suitable to me. Could have come from the added ham seasoning. Maybe they were trying for the"Soul Food" taste.Corn muffin was yellow meal which made it sweet & crumbly. White corn meal cornbread cooked in a round iron skillet and sliced would be sooo much better! The Pie looked good but very lemony flavored & tasted a day or two old with the old "refrigerator" taste.I was the only one eating inside and overheard worker conversations, so apparently at least a couple of employees were brand new.....WHY?? And The rating dropped a star when I got the bill-$19.....Exorbitant! In the future, I'll continue going to Judy's (strong 4 Stars) over at intersection of Hwy 90 & Azalea Rd - they know how to do good country cooking the right way with a reasonable price!! read more

Judy's Place is a cool little place to grab lunch or dinner on Government Blvd. If you like country style cooking, this might be right up your alley. I usually get the Chicken Beurre Blanc (white sauce) and I love their lima beans and salad. The prices are decent and you definitely get enough food to fill you up until the next meal. This is a little gem of a place. We stopped in for lunch and were pleasantly surprised. They have a great menu with home-cooked food. We had a club and shrimp poboy that were outstanding. After we ordered we saw all the different plates coming out that looked amazing. They have fresh cooked Lima beans, okra, field peas and turnips. The wait staff were very efficient and nice. The service was good, as was the fried shrimp poboy. However, the fried okra was fried at too low a temperature and was soggy, rather than crispy, on the outside. My dining companion assured me that the okra problem was an aberration. The price was very good, and everything was clean. I shall return and probably try something blackened. read more

The food was traditional Southern cooking, and they did that pretty well. As a matter of fact, they do it so well that they are packed at lunch. There is no one seating people and you have to just be ready to jump when you see someone starting to stand up. We needed a table for 6, and there are exactly 2 of those, and it took 20 minutes to get one. If you have a group of more then 6 you have to split up. When I went to pay all 6 were on the same ticket, so I took it to the counter but stood in line 7 minutes to pay. I am happy for them that they are doing so well, but it will be without me in the future. read more

Place was okay. Service was terrible. Felt like we were ignored. Did not like that they didn't have high chairs for young kids of 20+ months. Only reason it got a 2 was because the food was good. This is BY FAR the best place to eat in Mobile. The restaurant is small, but that enhances the southern style soul food feel. The women who work here are such sweethearts and always greet you with a warm smile. The food here is just incredible. I've never had a meal at a restaurant where everything on the plate is home made. The rolls, the Mac and cheese, the mashed potatoes.. EVERYTHING homemade. The greatest peeve of a restaurant customer is watching people who were seated after you get their food before you. I went there when they first moved to their new location, so my review is as timely as their service. I would like to say the food was good but after 35 months, it never arrived. So I left, vowing to never return. The service stinks unless you enjoy watching staff carry on conversations with other customers, or amongst themselves. Maybe the Mexican Restaurant can come back to its old spot? At least then, I can be ignored in Spanish. read more

Today was my first experience at Judy's Place but it will not be my last. I went for lunch and they were crowded (a good sign!) but we luckily got the only free table. I started with a cup of gumbo which was very tasty. Then, I had the Southern Fried Chicken Breast Smothered in Homestyle Gravy. This is AMAZING. The battered, white gravy topped chicken breast is HUGE, taking up half the plate. It was very tender and juicy and oh so delicious. It comes with choice of bread (roll, corn bread, mexican corn bread) and two sides. I chose mashed potatoes and gravy (ok, nothing special) and fried okra (tasty!). Service was fast and friendly.
