Oh man, this place is awesome. I recently moved to the area and found Junebug Café just by walking around the neighborhood. New Orleans is one of my favorite cities to visit, particularly for the cuisine. When I saw beignets, meat pies, and gumbo on their menu I knew I had to stop in some time. My girlfriend and I ordered a meat pie, beignets, an iced latte, and an iced mocha. I usually just drink coffee, but this was honestly the best mocha I've ever had. The chocolate wasn't too sweet - it complimented the coffee well without overpowering it taste-wise. The meat pie was delicious, the spices really came through in the flavor and the beignets were great as well. The pricing is fair considering the quality of food coffee and that they're an independent shop. read more

Super cute addition to 6 corners! This little cafe has Cajun flavor and serves beignets with Dark Matter coffee or the NOLA chicory coffee. The meat pie was loaded with seasoned ground beef and some olives. Beignets are fluffy and fried to order. If you fancy another dessert, check out the cafe case for gluten free brownies or cookies. Tried Junebug for the first time today and we were not disappointed! We tried the Cafe au Lait and the beignets and it felt like we were back in New Orleans. The beignets are big, so 3 for 5 was a great deal. We also had the meat pie, the flavor was delicious but the meat did settle down to one side so the first bite was just the puff pastry. Still a really solid snack. Finally, we tried the gumbo. Once again it felt like we were in the French Quarter! I will say the bowl of gumbo seemed more like a cup size. So we probably each could have had our own. It was a bit spicy due to the sausage but still very good. All in all, a really great cafe for a quick bite and some good coffee! read more

The beignets were absolutely delicious. The stars of the show- they are served hot with a lot of powder sugar. I cannot wait to go back in again, and the staff is very very friendly :) I also had the Gumbo- I've never had it before, and I may not be too qualified to say much, but it was delicious. It will definitely be the go-to during the winter. Matcha coffee was also delicious!!! They add vanilla as a sweetener, which they make in-house. So I never leave reviews but I felt like I absolutely HAD to for Junebug! I've seen Junebug in my neighborhood but never got around to trying it. Today I decided to order a little of everything - beignets, meat pie, red beans and rice pie, gumbo, their lattes and their bottled cold brew. I dug into the beignet IMMEDIATELY and i had one of those eyes closed revelatory moments. I might have met god. These beignets are brought down from heaven, there isn't another explanation except maybe the baker is also from New Orleans heaven. Next I dug into the hand pies. WOW. Perfect amount of spicy, perfect meat to crust ratio. Just *chefs kiss*. Now the gumbo... let me say, me and my fiancé have been looking for some good gumbo in the city, trying restaurants on eater lists and whatnot. This is BY FAR, the best. Perfect amount of spicy, perfectly seasoned. I'm just baffled. The latte (oat milk, vanilla) was also beautifully made! The milk was not oversteamed, perfect microfoam, the espresso was pulled perfectly. Everything was just so wildly delicious. I'm so grateful I live a block away! As I was walking to an appointment, I saw this place and decided this is where I'm going after. It definitely did not disappoint! It was my first time here and I definitely will be back! They serve my favorite coffee which is Dark Matter. I had the pumpkin spice cold brew. I had the meat pie, the apple pie. I've never had beignets so I decided to give them a try and OMG, heaven in your mouth. I even called them and told them how great everything was. Great brand new spot in Portage Park- totally unique! You can basically only order 3 things: a meat pie, gumbo (cup or bowl), and beignets; all of which are delicious. Yummm! This place has all that I want in a cafe. Warm, inviting space with plenty of seating options indoor and out. Clean bathroom. Welcoming and friendly staff who aim to please. They took time to find out what I like in coffee (strong) and prepared a delicious frothy cappuccino. My friend and I had biscuits with butter (plus egg, cheese and bacon) - what a treat to have it made the way we wanted on the spot! A great place to linger and pretend you're in New Orleans. Great place for a quick bite and coffee drink! I stopped by with my friends for coffee. We didn't ordered much to eat since we had ate breakfast, but I decided to purchase one of their meat pies to sample; it was delicious! I will surely visit again and this time with an empty stomach to try more of their delicious meat pies. This place is incredible. One of the true gems of the Old Irving/Portage Park area. The neighborhood has been waiting months for the Junebug to open. And now that it has, it's a powerful local favorite! Why? It's obvious. Just walk past the place. You'll get a waft of the Dark Matter Coffee they're brewing every day--to say nothing of the delicious beignets made to order, meat pies served with a delicious side sauce, glorious authentic gumbo, and so much more! Ignore Dunkin'. Ignore Starbucks. This place is the real deal. If you live within a mile, take a walk and get your fill of this amazing establishment. And if you live further than a mile, get on a bus or something and check it out. You'll not regret it. Seriously. Just go. The Junebug is a family owned business, and the owners are wonderful people. Went there for the first time today. I've been wanting to stop in there but have not been able to as finding a parking spot is almost to impossible. The two people working there which includes the owner were super nice. Cute little place. I ordered 2 Beignets and a meat pie to go. It was all amazing. The Beignets are bigger then normal, eating them warm made them taste even better. The meat pie was so good and hot. Included was a spicy sauce that was good also. Saw something on local access tv on take out places... and then had to go... got a meat pie and cup of gumbo. Meat pie was warm and flaky with a nice remoulade, spicy, but not too, a nice compliment. The gumbo is a dark roux version, but light, not too thick, and with some kick. Lots of chicken and sausage, too. Very tasty. Will return!!! read more

I stopped into the West Town location today on a whim. The outside was such a cute color and the inside was just as charming. As soon as I stepped in the nice woman behind the register handed me a menu to take a look over. I'd never had gumbo, meat pies, or beignets before and was excited to give them all a try. I am not kidding when I say this is some of the best food I've ever had in my whole life. There are so many rich and tasty flavors in the gumbo and meat pie. I am already planning my next trip. Stopped in for lunch, and ate on the bench just outside. Ordered a cup of gumbo Meat pie Iced coffee Before even tasting the gumbo, it looked and smelled delicious. Best gumbo I've ever had. No question. The person who makes this is paying attention. And there's a small ball of rice in the center, you just mix it in. The meat pie was very tasty too, but next time I will just get a bowl of gumbo and be done because every spoonful was that satisfying, and I couldn't get enough. Finally, the coffee is Dark Matter. I've had a few bowls of Gumbo, but none as good as this. One of the owners is from the New Orleans area, and she seems to have brought an outstanding gumbo recipe with her to Chicago. More of a coffee shop than restaurant, but the gumbo was excellent. Just the right amount of pepper balanced with some Smokey sausage, and shrimp. Besides gumbo, $8 for a bowl, they have Meatpies. The beignets were very good, 3 for $5. And their coffees are by local fair trade distributor, Dark Matter. I had a 20 ounce drip coffee for $2.75. Full roasted flavor that complemented the beignets very nicely. The place is clean and relaxing. Owners Chris and Jacqueline live in the area of Portage Park and are very nice people. Though they have been only open for about a month, they very generously recommended the restaurant on the corner. I'll definitely be back for the gumbo, and want to check out a meatpie as well. read more
