Had a paid in advance reservation through American Academy of Ophthalmology Conference Housing office. Checked in at 7:30 pm and was told they had no rooms and I was being moved to "The Blake" and they would give me money for a taxi. I even had my husband call earlier in the evening and verify that I was arriving late- at no point was he told they gave away my room. I asked to speak with a supervisor, and after about 10 minutes, Danielle Vick came out and said she was a supervisor. She said she was sorry and it was their fault but they had no room. All the while I am watching while THREE other people check in and are given rooms after me. I asked to speak to the manager on duty, and as I waited for Peter Brookhart to come out, 2 more people checked in and were given rooms. "Peter" said it was their error, nothing they could do and they would book me in another hotel. I said I did not want to drive all around Chicago in a taxi finding a hotel. He made a call and told me I would be given a room across the street at "The W". (AJ at checkin desk was very welcoming and understanding about how horrifically I was treated by Marriott staff). I called Marriott reservations to complain and was told that the conference Housing was informed that the JW was overbooked and that people with confirmed reservations would need to be "walked" and the housing office approved it. I will NEVER, EVER stay at a Marriott property again. And I will NEVER, EVER forgive the unprofessional and lousy way I was "handled" by Danielle Vick and Peter Brokkhart from the JW- their lack of maturity and inability to resolve a situation to the guests satisfaction is so very not "The Marriott Way" they need to be FIRED for their utter incompetence. read more

Had an amazing stay at the JW Marriott in January 2015 for a wedding. The bar was the social hot spot every single night, the room was pristine every afternoon after lunch, and for the most part, we had a wonderful experience. My disappointment arises from the customer service desk after I realized I left my brand new vest in the room closet on my day of departure. I called less than four hours after leaving the JW expecting a very quick and easy process since I knew the exact whereabouts of my item. The customer service representative seemed extremely distracted, getting the details of my stay wrong continuously even after I corrected him. Within seconds, "we have nothing" came back through the phone which left me speechless. The rep didn't even ask for contact info in case it showed up. Quite a disappointing experience and evident lack of care for guests on the customer service end!!! read more

This is a very poor representation of a good Marriott property. We received very poor service during our visit. Our room was not right and various members could care less. We are gold elite members and treated like dirt! The door to the toilet are had caked on dust. This is not the level of JW that we have experienced in the past. Go elsewhere! read more

Rooms are spacious and well appointed, they re-did a historic building so there are some quirks, but over all a good location and nice amenities. The bathroom I had included a large soaking tub, separate shower and spacious counter. I did not get turndown which surprised me. Overall the staff is friendly and helpful. The internet is slow and spotty and you do pay for it so that is a tad aggrevating. It is a good location in the loop near to shopping and dining. Enjoy! read more

Definitely an enjoyable experience. the staff was extremely welcoming and were always available. The sleeping quarters were very inviting and quiet- exactly what I look for when traveling. The high point of the room was the bed: so comfortable! I found myself looking forward to coming back to my room each day, because of that bed. The location is pretty awesome and easily accessible to some good restaurants as well. I will admit however that the conference floor felt like a bit of a maze, but hey, with that being its greatest downfall, this hotel still remains a winner. read more

After a hellish experience with another hotel we had reserved and basically walked out of before checking in, The JW Marriott in Chicago took us in like an old friend. We need four rooms for our crew, and they accommodated us all on the same floor. The catering manager helped with last minute arrangements so that we could move our event to their lobby bar and restaurant, and it was absolutely perfect! Staff is pleasant, valet is efficient. 1. Though there were two men standing in the foyer when I walked in (I was dressed in work-out type clothing and had luggage), I was never greeted by them. They just looked at me. 2. Had an early check-in and was able to get a handicapped room (which was great for me). The young lady who checked me in was very cordial and friendly. 3. The room was clean and adequate size. The bathroom was a little larger and I appreciated that due to it being a handicapped room. 4. Linens and towels were clean and stain-free. 5. The walls and doors are paper thin.....heard every conversation of the people next door and as others were going down the hallway. 6. Stayed here in January 2012 for business and was pleasantly surprised as this certainly was not your average Mariott. The room was large and the bathroom was HUGE. Great bathrobe, super comfortable bed and easy to connect internet. Very friendly staff and a solid lobby bar. We got a roomblock at the JW Marriott for our wedding last summer at the Willis Tower and were very happy with the level of service and the overall quality of the rooms. They gave us a good rate on an absolutely stunning suite- I mean the bathroom alone was big enough to live in. We used it for the grooms party to get ready which worked out well as it was in the middle of the World Cup and there were huge TVs in the living room and bedroom and even a small tv in the bathroom. I ordered room service for lunch and it was extremely quick and no more expensive than room service in any other hotel. When we got back from the wedding there were chocolates and champagne which was a lovely touch. A special shout out to Kristen, the Events Coordinator for being so easy to work with. They were also very kind and accommodating of our guests and were very gracious about letting people check in early to get ready. The only slight issue anyone had was getting service in the lobby bar- but when the managers heard about this they comped their entire bill for a couple drinks and snacks for 4 which to me makes up for it. The lobby is beautiful, we took pictures on the Spiral Staircases leading up to the mezzanine level which turned out awesome. We would definitely recommend the hotel, especially for wedding parties! read more

This review is for the lobby bar, not the hotel. What an amazing Happy Hour on Thursday! They have one every day 5pm - 7pm, but Thursday is the best deal, as it's the cocktail night. This is the cheapest spot to have a tasty cocktail and a bite to eat. Came here with two different girlfriends, both times of a Thursday, and we were pretty boozed up and no longer hungry by the time we left and only $25 out. Waiters are super nice, there's always a spot to sit down, it's kind of fancy, but laid back at the same time as the hotel guests sometimes sit around with all their stuff. Came to Chicago for business and stayed at the JW. My room was massive with a nice shower, tub and view of the Willis Tower. The staff was super friendly and helpful during my visit but the winner was the bed. Probably the best nights of sleep I've had on a trip in a while. Spent almost a week here on a program. All seemed well, until a problem needed to be addressed. I called the AV department at around 10pm and was told they worked only 7am-7pm and that Engineering would solve the issue. I was told that Engineering was on the way. After six calls and 90 minutes of waiting, I gave up. Incredibly frustrating. Then, was at the bar once during the stay. I attempted to order four different beers, but after each attempt was told that the hotel was out of that selection. I finally asked what beer they had and was told that all the draft beers had been out of order for 1 1/2 months and a number of the bottled beers were out. I asked why the printed bar menu noted all the selections that were out, especially since the menu was 1 1/2 months out of date. The bar tender shrugged his shoulders and then began to rant that the hotel outsourced all of its bar services and that the vendor had not yet showed up to fix the drafts and to replenish the selections that had run out. This has been going on for 1 1/2 months, according to the bar tender. Very odd and hard to believe, but that is what I was told. read more

So we booked ourselves into this lovely hotel for Lollapalooza. It's close to everything, walking distance to the lakefront, Art Museum, Michigan avenue with any and all amenities within walking distance. Restaurants, Starbuck's, Walgreens, you name it, you can hit it in a few blocks. Now this place is pricey and I guess that's my only kinda sorta beef. I understand supply and demand and figure if they're getting it, good on them, but it still seems a bit much. I'm still sticking with 5 stars, however, as it's not like you don't know what you're paying and don't have the option to go somewhere else. Just based on it's merits, The JW is a fine hotel situated perfectly in the heart of downtown, so if you can figure out how to pool enough nickels to stay there I'd say by all means, you've found a place to rest your weary head and a perfect place from which to explore downtown Chicago.... read more

I'm shocked this is a JW Marriott!! The front desk was so disorganized and confused. I was told different things each time I spoke to someone. My husband was in meetings all day and I decided to travel with him and just relax and watch TV. That would be great if the room has a remote!! When I called down stairs they guy who picked up the phone said "sorry, we don't have any remotes for you!" Are you kidding me? After asking to speak to a superior, they finally found another remote for me to use. Sounds good, right? Well it would have been if the TV worked!!! I spent 3 days watching shows from my iPhone bc the tv wouldn't work and they couldn't send anyone to fix it. When I decided to order food, I called and asked how late I could order and was given misinformation. I was left hungry and unable to order room service. I asked if the gift shop wad open and I was told it was open until midnight. I sent my husband down to purchase a few necessities and guess what? It was closed!!! How do they not know such basic info about their own hotel?!?? On our last day, I had the front desk hold our luggage after we checked out until it was time for our flight. I purchased food for the place but the front desk managed to loose it!! Worst worst experience ever! If you're in the area, go to the sushi place across the street. I was going through a stressful time trying to make a transition to moving to Chicago and looking at apartments during this pandemic, and nothing seemed to be going as planned due to flights, plans, and sickness. But an agent who went by the name Kelly was very helpful with my reservation because I wasn't able to actually stay at the property. But Kelly was able to adjust my reservation for me and refunded me my penalty for not cancelling in time. But I will be rebooking and staying in May to finalize my move to Chicago. The last few trips I'd stayed at the Renaissance Downtown so this time I opted for the JW. It was an underwhelming stay. The hotel lobby is very nice and posh. But the room was small and dated. The walls are also paper thin and could hear my neighbors. The exec lounge is pretty good though. I think the Renaissance is a better more modern option. read more

Nice place, but expect to pay extra for everything beyond your bed and the coffee machine in your room. They charge for wifi, and no meals are included. No airport shuttle or anything like that. Rooms are pretty clean, but not "white glove" clean as one might expect in a "luxury" hotel. Staff is friendly. read more

We still love weekend getaways at the JW Marriott Chicago, but the service has not been what it was the first time we were there, which was not even a year after they opened. On our first visit they rolled out the red carpet. We've been there 4 times since, and service quality is now lacking. Funny thing is... we stayed at this hotel for Riot Fest in 2015. So, all day were rocking out to bands and then the end of the nice, staying at a really nice hotel. It was actually a nice balance. Each night, my husband and I would end the night with a cocktail in the lobby. Pretty good drinks at the bar and really nice atmosphere. Also loved walking around the hotel as it's so beautiful! My favorite is the staircase with the chandelier. We also had brunch at the Florentine upstairs and that was great as well! read more

Let me start out by saying Marriott has the worst customer service of any hotel brand I have EVER stayed at. In the past, I have had to repeatedly follow up with their customer service department in order to receive an acknowledgement from management that what I've experienced is inexcusable. With this I am referring to 1) being assigned a room where the lock is ineffective, one I spent more than 2 minutes each time I tried to exit the room trying to unlock the door to that I could leave, major trigger for anyone with claustrophobia ... 2) being an elite member however being given a SMOKING ROOM... 3) requesting a room of a certain size and being given another... My company gives this hotel 10s of millions of dollars per year with loyal Marriott/SPG memberships. I travel 95% of the year (in 2018, I have been home a total of 2 weeks). Because of this, I expect that both my sacrifice plus the money that my company is providing to Marriott, this hotel brand should provide me (and any other loyal customer) with exceptional customer service. Especially given the fact that I am trusting them to be my home, when work prevents me from being at my real home. The reason I'm writing this review is not only because I did not receive a response until I demanded one for the mishaps I experienced that I listed above, I actually experienced something that violated me physically and personally, and Marriott customer service did nothing about it. In mid May, I stayed at the JW Marriott in Chicago. Mind you, this is a hotel that cost $375 per night. For that kind of money, I think any person is expecting both top of the line customer service and top of the line comfort. They assigned me a room after a long day of traveling for me, and once I entered the room (per my usual reaction to being "home"), I changed out of my travel clothes and began to walk around the room without clothes (AINT NOTHINF WRONG WITH THAT WHEN YOURE PAYING ALMOST 400 per night TO SLEEP SOMEWHERE)... to my surprise, a few minutes later a man (I am a young woman!!!) walks into the room beside me and is appalled to find the DOOR CONNECTING HIS ROOM AND MINE (left open by housekeepers).... he sees me standing there completely naked. I know from the bottom of my heart this wasn't this man's fault, as he looked as surprised and appalled as I did, HOWEVER that does not take away from the fact that I was paying close to $400 per night to feel absolutely violated, embarrassed, and above all, unsafe. If one of the highest levels of Marriott would allow this to happen, what else could happen. Now let's get one thing straight, I'm not an unreasonable person. I understand that this may have been a sheer mistake made my housekeeping. Mistakes happen. However, when I notified Marriott of my horrific experience, one i literally think about every day with anxiety wondering if I'll run into this man in a work setting and how he'll only be able to picture me terrified, naked, and vulnerable against my will in the hotel room that was assigned next to him, MARRIOTT OFFERED ME A $50 GIFT CARD TO THEIR RESTAURANT DOWNSTAIRS!! I literally told the customer service rep on the phone that I was offended by the "gesture". "Here's $50 worth of food that you don't want, this shows our extreme sorrow" give me a break. It's not about the money or the points. It's about the sincerity. However, if you're going to offer points, don't offer something so insulting as 5k-10k!!????? I was offered these pathetic gifts of "restitution" and politely declined. I requested a conversation with Marriott management, someone who might actually take seriously the experience one of their most loyal customers endured. I was told "a case has been opened" and to wait 2 days for a resolution. The reason I'm writing this review is it's been 1 month since I was promised a response from Marriott management. I think it's fair to at the very least expect a response (maybe an apology) from them, but I never did. The fact that I never received any sort of communication from Marriott after I opened my case with them of literally being fully exposed to someone I never consented to, makes me feel sick. I would recommend against this hotel, and any other Marriott hotel, for as long as I live. The truth is you think your loyalty means something, but as soon as you have something to say to "management", your cry is swept under the rug and you're left to struggle on your own. In short, in the 50+ nights I've stayed with Marriott this past year, I felt more appreciated when I stayed at a quality inn/ red roof inn / days inn when I was in college. That's saying something. Choose wisely, don't choose Marriott. read more

The rooms are very nice and updated, the common areas and nice and the gym is part of the spa, so it's almost a full gym- weight benches and all. The concierge lounge had a decent offering as well. The only potential minus is the location- while convenient to many offices and business, the area gets slightly dodgy at night- it's more of a business area. read more

Came here for a work conference: I didn't know there was a hotel in this area, and some research showed that this used to be a large bank which was designed by Sullivan back in the end of his life, so this is a grand historic building. The lobby is monstrous and classically glowing with some modern touches and nice art. The floors are lined with pictures of Chicago architecture which is a nice highlight to the history of the buildings. The conference facility was very nice, everything is modern, fresh, colorful, and new. I will have to check out the rooms sometime but the public areas are amazing and the building inspires pride in our Chicago history. read more

I've stayed here twice in the past year during trips to Chicago and am a huge fan on this hotel. We rooms are massive for a Chicago hotel with plenty of room to spread out your luggage and move around. Huge bathroom as well! Helpful and smiling staff. This JW Marriott is on Adams St between La Salle and Wells which is a great location for shopping. Not the top designer stores but definitely more basic stores like H&M, etc. Still weirded out about how large this hotel is. Even the hobby. Weirded out in a good way though! read more

5 stars for the bath tub alone! It is the largest tub I have ever been in at a hotel. I'm 5 11 and was completely submerged. Definitely room for two if not a third person... Lol... It's that huge. Room was also good sized although I have been in larger ones in Chicago. My room at the Renaissance Blackstone was larger. It's a JW so you get that higher level of appointments in the room and I even had a TV in the bathroom mirror. Really nothing to complain about. Staff was very friendly and helpful. I had to change rooms because I was close by the elevator and it was not a problem at all. read more

Had a nice weekend stay here recently. The lobby is very welcoming even though it's always busy; cold fruit water available, never a line at the concierge or check-in. We were able to check in several hours early on a Friday morning and still got our requested high floor room, which was well-appointed with a huge bathroom and tub. The concierge very helpfully let me log into my StubHub account on his computer to print out some tickets I needed, and provided instructions for us to take the train. Honestly was out and about almost every minute I was awake, but I appreciated the convenient location - Orange line from Midway is right around the corner - and upscale comfort of the JW. Really enjoyed my stay. The bed was exquisite - on the OMG level... so soft ...I passed out. I am nearly at the point of ordering one for my home. Also, I really liked the oversized bathtub. I am not a tiny person, and it was definitely a plus. Had their complimentary breakfast at the lounge - it is basically inside of what felt like a repurposed presidential suite at the very top of the hotel. The eggs were nice - it was a full continental breakfast with a few hot items. Also had a chance to interact with Danielle, the front desk manager. She was on top of her game. Good hotel. Sometimes it is just "the little things" that make all the difference in the world to me, and this JW property understands that. For example, there was a bit of a mix up with the delivery of an amenity I requested. I traveled that day, then worked a full day and I was tired. I received a phone call from the manager, and not only did she offer an apology, but she sent up some extra items and credited my Marriott account some points. Some of the floors (I believe the executive floor) have a TV located in the mirror in the bathroom. It is hard to notice when turned off, as it blends in well with the mirror, so look for a remote! When getting ready for work I love to have the news on, so this is a really big plus for me. The food and the staff in the executive lounge are both outstanding. There were a number of options in the evenings and for breakfast, even for a vegetarian, and I found the food to be better than what I've enjoyed at other JW properties. The fitness center is huge with state of the art equipment. read more

I had to make a last-minute trip and the only way I could book this hotel was through Expedia even though I'm a Marriott member. Even though I couldn't reap the benefits as a Marriot member, I wish I could have since during the week of my stay it was $590/night on Expedia. Stlll cheaper than other places like the W which was charging $650/night. There must have been some kind of convention going on. The room was clean and much larger than I thought it would be. It definitely had a luxurious feel because of the high ceilings. The TV was also very clear and also gave you the ability to do a quick check-out at the end of your stay. You have to pay for internet, but it met my needs for when I was doing work. I don't even think I tried streaming since you may need more bandwidth for it. The bathroom was nice and big. I wish I could've taken advantage of the big tub, but there was enough lighting in the bathroom and the showerhead had different settings. The only caveat is that the water has a strong chlorine smell, but I'm assuming that's Chicago water for you. The staff was friendly. The noise was well-insulated so I slept well for the 4 nights that I stayed there. The gym was ok and it does get busy in the mornings, but I like that it was well-maintained. I really wanted to give this place 5 stars, but after writing this review, having to pay for internet after the pricey cost and trying to convince them to allow me my Marriott perks, just didn't seem entirely worth it. Don't get me wrong, I had a pleasant experience and well, I shouldn't care so much about the price since this was a business trip, but if this weren't for business, I think this was overpriced. if given the choice, I'd stay here again but not on my own dime. read more

Hubs and I booked a room for the Chicago Marathon this year. We wanted a comfy hotel that was close to Grant Park (a 10 minute stroll) and dining options (tons around). My parents came up to cheer us on and - to my amusement - the note we entered "2 double beds, please. The in-laws are bunking with us" - was actually read back to us at check-in (with a laugh from the desk clerk - maybe he'd had to room with his). I always love the details that a nice hotel pays attention to. This time, it was immediately pointing out where to find the hot tub and noting that a runner-friendly breakfast would be available in the wee hours of the morning. I wish I could have cozied up in the chairs near the bar and sipped on a cocktail when we arrived, but there was running to be done the next morning. My own fault. ;) The only negative was that hubs left a pair of dress pants and a shirt in a drawer. He called within a couple of hours of departing, security checked the room and found none; they never turned up in lost and found, either. Who'd remove clothes from a room and not turn them in? Oh well... time to go shopping. read more
