This place makes some excellent Filipino dishes, I tried the Pork Menudo, the Dinuguan, the Adobo Chicken, the Fried Fish, Chicken Soup, Taro leaves in coconut sauce, Filipino Pork BBQ on a stick [Kebobs] the Shrimp fritter called a "UKOY" , they even have the baby duck eggs known as "Balut" those are pretty good too The food is always very well made and fresh and the owners are very friendly & hospitable, excellent service! since this seems to be the only Filipino diner in the area, with a few Chinese places, but I see mostly taquerias in this area since it's in the Mission. highly recommeded! read more

Got catering from them and it was a huge success. This was the only filipino place that was open on sunday before christmas so we decided to call to get a catering order for our holiday party. They have all the authentic filipino dishes like pork adobo and lumpia shanghai. We ordered pork and chicken adobo, 300+ lumpia, tapsilog. longnisa, garlic rice, over-easy eggs. This place has better karioka than Goldilocks does. I absolutely prefer Kababayan's seasoning. On that note, it's obvious that Kababayan's food seems a lil greasier but I'm pretty sure Goldilock's food is as well. This place fulfills my quick, Filipino food craving. I like hole in the walls, but what I absolutely detest and can't understand are people who serve the public and are so surly. We all have are off days, but there is a woman, middle aged, short hair cut, who is so rude all the time, every single time. However, the young lady is so sweet and kind and I tip her all the time. That's it. If you like quick, Filipino food, it's good, except for that mean woman. There's another lady in the back who usually helps out, too, she's nice. I really don't know why they use the crabby one out in the front; she should be in the back doing the prep work. The beef steak is good, longanisa, turon, and sinigang, too. This place deserves a 3.75 but I am not able to do that so I am rounding up because of all the great quick delicious meals I have had in the past. The food is quite cheap even when you go 2 to 3 orders. I personally keep missing this restaurant since it is so hidden and is shadowed next to a huge seafood market. Much of what is on the menu can look foreign to you. The sweet sliced up beef dish is immaculate I could eat that everyday. Ate there yesterday at 2 pm, ate combo meals. Paid thru my credit card. He swipe it twice and said the machine is not working. Sabi nya "sira " and i end up paying cash. I ask him are you sure? He said sira daw. I know it went thru cause he read loud and clear the word " approve ". Anyway, when i got home check my laptop, charged my card twice. This is a Filipino fast food restaurant. The food is served cafeteria style. The place is basically a hole in the wall. If you go in there and you are not familiar with their food you will probably feel kinda lost. There is nothing special about their decor and atmosphere. It is just a place to get quick fast Filipino food. The pancit is average. The pork satay stick is very good. The sausages they have are very greasy, but good. The lumpia is average. This is one of the few Filipino restaurants in San Francisco that I know of that are close to BART. I will probably go there again because of that. read more

If you're worried about the cleanliness of the place then this review isn't gonna help) My brother was visiting me in the city for the day and he insisted on taking him somewhere for some good homemade Filipino food comparable to what our grandma used to make. Let me just say this place will for sure feel like stepping into your Lola's kitchen, with the plastic table cloths and tray of all the sauces under the sun and TFC playing in the background. I'm giving this place a five star rating because it deserves it. This is not a fancy place but the service I experienced was better than a posh style restaurant. My friend and I came here yesterday to see the murals on Mission District. As we were walking past it, I recognized the Tagalog name of the place so we went in. Being fairly new to the area from the East Coast, I'm still not used to a lot of Asian stuff especially restaurants. I still get excited when I see one. I wanted to introduced my Korean friend to some Filipino cuisine but we just ate. So I decided to buy an "okoy" (bean sprout with shrimp fritter) for snack. As soon as we walked in, the guy who was busy scooping some watermelon drinks said hi and said he'd be right with us. And then I proceeded to order the fritter. We asked him to split it in half and not only he did that, he did it nicely with no attitude. He also offered to give me some vinegar sauce. He gave us napkins and wrapped the fritter in a paper bag and then plastic bag. The fritter cost me $2.00 and I'd give it 4 stars. It was delicious but I believe in always giving room for improvements. To "Kababayan" keep up the great service. Stopped by on a Saturday stroll down Mission Street. Picked up Shanghai lumpia and some BBQ chicken on a stick. The lumpia was crispy and delicious; the chicken was cooked perfectly and completely hit the spot after a night of too many cocktails. I'm not Filipino. I cannot tell you what a lumpia is. I don't even know the different meats that could possibly go into an adobo. But hey, I like food, and I like good food. So just because nothing at Kababayan is labeled and all the dishes look the same to me, doesn't mean I'm not gonna eat it. Especially when the meat (whatever it is) in my adobo melts in my mouth, like the melting, flavored flesh and fat that it is. It's cheap eats, a 3-item plate for $8 plus tax. Oh boy. Being Filipino myself, I'm absolutely disappointed at the quality of the food and the service. I ordered 3 meal beef combo, which was beefsteak, chicken adobo, and chicken barbeque for less than $14.00. Among the 3 course meal, only the chicken adobo was probably the only meal that satisfied me despite of its mediocre taste. The beefsteak meat was rubber-like tough. I was unable to finish it. This place is just awesome! The food is made very fresh each day, it's succulent, juicy, seasoned perfectly, and the meat just falls off the bone! Besides the typical "chicken adobo", try the Hawaiian BBQ, pork stew, and chicken stew ...the meat is tender and yummy..you can't get enough of it! Super filling, especially atop the steamed rice. This is as close to homecooked Filipino you can get anywhere in this part of town. I literally ventured here just to get lumpia. Nice size and fresh!! 12 pcs for $4.11 inclusive of tax. I'm impressed that even when it's gotten cold it is still crispy on the outside and edges. If they could lighten up on the pork filling by 1/3 and add white or yellow onion and a little extra skin layer so the middle part is lighter and crispier it would definitely rival the Daly City /south city lumpia. So, I don't bother coming in, when all I have is my credit card money =/ which kind of sucks sometimes when I crave for there BBQ shishcabob, or lumpias.. So, I go somewhere else.. So, if you plan on comiing here, MAKE SURE TO HAVE CASH!!!! Because it is kind of embarassing when theres a few people in line behind you waiting to pay for there own food.... Only once have I left my food, to go take out cash, because I forgot.. Hopefully they'll change that soon! but other then that, Great food.. nice small place.. I think they only have your basic beer, Corona, tecate, and Heniken (I think) .. and, sodas. and If you need to use the bathroom while there, which is in the back, you have to walk through the kitchen to get there, and it's a SMALL bathroom, like.. literally only fits the toilet, and a shower.. to wash your hands you have to do it when you get out of the bathroom, on the side, the mirror is also out over the sink.. When I was there, they didn't really have napkins for hands... I used my napkin. Found this place by chance while looking for a coffee shop in the Mission area. For someone who misses home, this is as close to a carinderia experience as you'll get. They have a variety of cooked Filipino food ready to be served. I got the ukoy, which was cooked when I ordered ($2 each). Crisp, good ratio of veggies to flour/cornstarch, with a piece of shrimp in the middle. It was so good I ordered another one to bring home. It was awesome with or without vinegar. My husband ordered the tocilog ($6.5), which had a good amount of tocino (sweet marinated pork), a fried egg and 2 cups of garlic fried rice (enough rice to share). Fried rice flavor was perfect. Tocino was also good according to him (well he finished the whole thing). Very affordable too. Credit card payments have a minimum $10 so we had to order turon ($1) to make it $10.40. Turon was good too! Docked 0.5 star just for ambience/cleanliness. Also there's a TV blasting Filipino shows, to complete the authentic feel. I would gladly come back and get to-go. read more
