First off, is that the staff was very nice and personable. But now the "meat." I had the steak or beef kabob dinner. This was fair at best. I was really, really disappointed in the quality of the beef itself and its flavor. Definitely not worth the price. I ponder the stellar reviews of this establishment and wonder if they have been done by non foodie types. I make a better tasting kabob in my backyard BBQ with my home marinade. The rice was fine. The onion and tomato were cooked fine as well. But again, if the centerpiece of the meal is not stellar than the whole thing goes down in flames. Pretty place, decent service, fair food. Kabob House is a special place off Walnut Creek's Broadway strip. As the case with other highly rated restaurants, I was skeptical, cautious that I might be disappointed if I let glowing reviews raise my expectations too high. I'm happy to report that, as far as my humble opinion goes, their solid reputation is well-deserved, and I'm stuck somewhere between a 4 and 5. KB's dishes have a subtle and fresh taste, no exaggerated flavors. They feature organic farm-raised meats, perfectly seasoned and perfectly cooked, served alongside a generous helping of warm and fresh tasting saffron rice. We enjoyed the Chicken and Koobideh Kabob -- absolutely delicious. The hummus was also very good, as was the Eggplant Bonne. I was not a fan of the salad. I thought it was soggy and bland. Truth be told, the dinner did not start that great. I was already thinking of writing them off as a major disappointment. The bread we were initially served was cold and tough. Actually, I never really fell in love with their bread, I thought it was pretty bland and tasted like Ritz Crackers, but I did appreciate that subsequent batches were warm and fresh and, yes, they will give you as much as you want and refill your batch without you having to ask (more on that later). Their saffron rice was amazing. While it doesn't necessarily look amazing, it arrived warm with steam flying out of the dish and tasted great -- not too buttery, not too salty - again, perfectly seasoned and cooked. And again, they refilled my plate with another generous helping of piping hot saffron rice when I blasted through mine in a jiffy. Refills were offered without us having to ask. Anticipating customer needs without waiting for the customer to ask seems to be a lost art among restaurants. KB makes it second nature to them to get the basics down - don't smother the customer but pay close attention. Person No. 2 is low on water, let's refill. The table is down to one slice of bread, let's get them a fresh batch. Person No. 3 has two spoons of saffron rice left, let's offer her a fresh batch. Check in periodically and as needed, and do it with a smile. Customers don't always show appreciation for those little things (as we should), but we notice when service is missing and customers tend to be less forgiving of bad service than mediocre food. Luckily, the answer to this place is none of the above. When a place adds extra, the focus rightfully stays on the quality of the food than anything else. As many times as we've driven past Kabob House, we never ate here until last Saturday night. What were we thinking?? This place has awesome Persian food! I only wish we had come here sooner. It's a small space, but luckily we arrived early enough to get a table, since it quickly became packed with regulars. Kabob House is family owned and run, with Mama and her long-time chef assisting her in the kitchen. Her daughter works the front of the house with help from Dad, and I must say she was great, and extremely friendly. She was also very patient with us (since we don't know everything about Persian food) explaining different dishes, how they are prepared, her favorites, etc. She did not steer us wrong with her recommendations, and gave us some samples of certain items to taste. My hubby & I always order the hummus and eggplant appetizer with endless warm naan, with the intention, of only eating these with some red wine...umm epic Fail every time! We always succumb to our gluttonous appetites and order the Lamb Shank (which melts off the bone & even better the next day, 'cuz they give you that much), and hubby orders combo kabobs with lamb and chicken. In truth, the stick is removed by the time it gets to your table, which is kind of a disappointment, because after scarfing down a bunch of the best ground beef you'll ever taste, saffron chicken, chewy lamb and dissolves-in-your-mouth filet, you'll get hit with a flood of meat-induced man power that will incite you to grab the nearest instrument and impale whatever is left on the table. Amazing flavors. Kabob House is simply fantastic Persian cuisine. It's one of those restaurants where you try to restrain yourself but you just can't get the food into you mouth fast enough. And the flavors! We started with the flatbread, the eggplant appetizer, and hummus -- just perfect. I was tempted to try one of the vegetarian dishes -- they sounded great -- but went for the half chicken, half beef kabob. It has a really cool name but I forgot it. Probably the wine. Anyway, it came with a gargantuan mound of rice and grilled tomatoes. The server (I believe she was the owner's daughter) was wonderful and told how to mush the tomato with the rice and some butter and sprinkle sumac over it. I can't begin to describe the flavors! About halfway though I had to stop my feeding frenzy and have the remaining food wrapped to travel. When I got home, I offered my leftovers to my hubby, hoping all the while that he would say that he'd already eaten. Thankfully he had and I was able to enjoy them for lunch on Friday...yeeeess! Its an okay Persian restaurant. Do not get anything, but the koobideh. The koobideh was good. The bread they serve is very good. The barg was decent, my brother did not like it, but I thought it was okay. The weird thing about this place is that the owner is sitting right next to you, working on his laptop, and hearing everything you say about the food, while you are eating it. My new favorite affordable and non-scene restaurant in Walnut Creek. Better food and easier on the budget, this combo makes me very happy. Given Kabob House's generic name and location next to Casper's Hot Dogs and Taco Bell, I was completely prepared for a decent meal in a less than atmospheric restaurant. It was a pleasant surprise to peek inside and find a gorgeous little place, tastefully decorated and with welcoming owners. I've become slightly familiar with Persian cuisine thanks to a recent meal at Bijan, and the menu is similar though significantly lower priced. Dolmas and hummus are in the $4 range and most kebab entrees are around $15. The only negative of the entire meal was that the flat bread was a little dry. My beef koobideh (like kofte kebab, I love this.) made from Niman Ranch beef was awesome. It came with a side salad, huge pile of buttery Persian rice, and grilled tomatoes. Incredibly only $11. The boyfriend had grilled chicken barg with this amazing rice covered in barberries and pine nuts, $14. There was a little cup of sumac on the table, which we sprinkled over practically everything, imparting a lemony delicious flavor on our food. I need to go buy some sumac. Didn't try any this time, but they have a full dessert menu including faloodeh, baklava, some type of honey sweetened fritters, and Persian ice cream. We just had to get the doogh (yogurt drink with mint, $2), and the owner came over and we had a nice little exchange over how similar versions of doogh are found in India, the middle east, and Turkey, latter being where I'd tried it before. Huh. Funny how some people only come to Yelp to either rant or rave about food, while not providing sufficient information in regards to the food and or experience. Enough about that- here are the basics: 1. great service and quality of food for meat eaters and vegetarians. I myself have tried dishes that are listed on the menu and they have pleasantly surprised me by accommodating their food to my needs. This has been wonderful to me, especially since in some restaurants you see a very limited variety for vegans/vegetarians. 2. They make their bread fresh in the restaurant. How many places can you say this about that's not French/Indian or Italian and especially in the East Bay? 3. To be fair, I can tell you from my experiences (I have been a loyal fan of theirs since their days at their old location in Pleasant Hill) that their portions are large and you will always leave with leftovers. This is reflected in their prices. 4. Personally, my favorites are Mirza Chasemi, Fessenjan and Spinach treat. All three dishes are wonderfully well cooked. If you want to try something in their meat menu, go for the Zereshk Polo minus chicken (or with if you consume meat) or the Shirin Polo. For the sweet tooth in you try their Faloodeh and their Baghlava with tea. I can only give it four stars because I haven't been able to try their meats- but for my vote, this places deserves all foodies to try it out for themselves. When I want koobideh... I always think of this place. I've had the koobideh which was great.. came with the standard tomato, onion and salad, which were all lovely (love the fire-roasted tomatoes!). I've also had chicken kabobs, and they were nice and tender, great flavoring. Hummus is great too, its pretty garlic-ey for garlic lovers. Yum! Kabob House is a pleasant surprise tucked away in a strip mall. They have a special lunch menu which both my fiance and I ordered from. My fiance got the Koobideh (ground beef) Kabob. It came with flat bread, a green salad, basmati rice, and barbecued tomatoes. He ate every single bite. Needless to say, he enjoyed it. I got the Chicken Kabob Wrap. It is a large piece of flat bread with lettuce, onions, tomato, grilled chicken, and a yogurt sauce. It was way to big to eat as an actual wrap but very delicious. Went with the family for lunch and I had koobideh. The meet wasn't fresh (dry and hard as a car tire) and I could not even consider giving a bite of this to my 2 year old. I told the manager about this and her response was "I have this koobideh every day and sorry you don't like it". I haven't been here in a few months, but I used to go here almost every week with my brother, it was the first place I went to only off of yelp reviews, its fantastic, I usually get the Dark meat Chicken with Lamb kabob as well, on the plate. The first time I was there they explained what the sumac was on the table and now I'm addicted to it, I just dump it on everything adds extra depth to the flavor, the kabob here the lamb, steak, Koobediah are all incredible, I don't usually get the Koobediah though because it is a bit greasy. I've tried some of their specialties like the spinach treat and the Zershk Pollo, they are both authentic, but I prefer just plain kabob. The Owners are usually out in the dining room and are friendly and willing to talk if you are interested, the service can get a little slow when its busy but I'm usually in there on off hours when they can devote all the attention to my party. The basmati rice is prepared traditionally and is delicious the plate's also come with barbecued tomatoes which are great mixed with the rice, I can't use enough superlatives about this place, its bit expensive but I would never complain because of how good the food is and the massive portions. They will also explain anything you don't understand and are patient with new comers. I can't rave enough about this gem of a place. I wish I could give it more stars. It is my favorite place to eat in Walnut Creek. The first time I had Persian food was home cooked by my friend's mom. Anytime I've had Persian food I compare it that and it usually falls short. Not Kabob House it is just as good as home cooking. My favorite dish is a stew called Gaimeh. I have to easily give this place 5 stars. I came here with a party of 8 and everyone enjoyed the whole experience. The food was great, big portions and everyone ordered something different so we were all able to try a little bit of everything. I had the lamb and chicken combo. Came with a mixture of two types of rice but I can't remember what it was but the owner there was nice enough to explain the dishes to us and answer any other questions we had. Recommended we chop up the grilled onions and tomatoes and mix it with the rice. The koobideh was really good, almost wished I ordered that instead but I'll just order that the next time I come. I thought the hummus was good too, maybe a lil garlicky for some but I didn't mind it. The service there was extremely nice, some of the best I ever had eating out. I liked how he explained how some of the dishes were made and what was in each one. The dessert menu is definitely worth a try. We ordered the rose water pistachio ice cream which is different from any ice cream I've ever had. I didn't know what rose water ice cream was but I knew I could taste it along with the pistachio. For some reason I couldn't stop eating it but the rose water is something you would really have to get used to. I had enough leftover for a full meal the next day. The Kabob House in Walnut Creek is a hidden gem! If you don't read any further then know that this wonderful treasure has the best tasting food in the bay area!! The Kabob House is owned by a delightful, warm and friendly Persian couple. They instantly made me feel like I was being welcomed into their home as opposed to a restaurant. This was something that I have only experienced on very rare occasions. The ambiance is very nice and the place is quite clean. There was a fantastic menu that also had a good section for vegetarians, which is important to several folks out there. Included with the very reasonable price was a choice of soup or salad. I elected the soup, which was a homemade Persian barley soup that was to die for!! I advised the owner that her barley soup is a real winner and should be served regularly. Generous pieces of fresh bread were also brought to the tablet that was included in the meal. The Joojeh Kabob (Cornish game hen with bone in) was out of this world!! The chicken was succulent, full of flavor and cooked very healthy. The food portions were extremely generous, even for this big eater :) I wound up taking some food home because I could not finish the meal. I have a number of health issues and the owners were extremely accommodating to my dietary constraints. My sense was that I was well taken care of by the owners and friendly staff! I wholeheartedly recommend the Kabob House in Walnut Creek. My girlfriend and I ate here about four months ago, and we still have long, in-depth conversations about the Lamb Shanks with dill, saffrom, fava bean cous cous. Really, that's all you need to know about the place, but the Fessinden? (Essentially Meatballs in a pomegrante gravy since I'm sure I typoed what it is actually called) is also the bomb dot com. I could hit the character limit of this review typing the word "love" over and over again to describe the food. The restaurant has a lot of character as well, which is kind of surprising since it's tucked away in a strip mall next to a Taco Bell. What a great find the Kabob House was. A friend found this place so we met there for dinner on a Wednesday night. When you walk in, you don't think much of the place because of the size. It's quite small with only about 10 tables in the whole restaurant. But don't let this deceive you. The food will blow you away. I got the chicken kabob skewer with rice. The chicken was so flavorful and juicy, I could not stop eating it. My wife had the lamb kabob. I had a piece and that was also amazing. I think for the price and the quality of the food, you really cannot go wrong with Kabob House. The staff is also extremely friendly. I have been a customer of Kabob House off and on since their location in Pleasant Hill by the Safeway store. When they moved to San Ramon it was out of the way for me and I sort of forgot about them. When I saw that they moved to the Newell Plaza location I went back in. The owner treated me like long lost family. He remembered me and my whole family and I do say that this is definitely a family restaurant. The food was excellent and authentic as always. This is real Persian food at it's best. This was good just like last time, not as overly sweet as 7up/Sprite but also not too sour. Salad. Came with kebab platters. Salad was alright, just normal lettuce and tomato with onion. Nothing to write home about. Khoresht-e-Ghormesabzi. Parsley stew with Leeks, Sun-dried Limes, chunks of Beef, served with Crispy Basmati Rice. This was okay, the parsley was definitely strong tasting. The beef was pretty good. The crispy rice helped the overall taste of the dish. Lamb Combo Kebab Platter. With Koobideh (Charbroiled Ground Beef) Kebab and Lamb Kebab with Roasted Tomatoes and a side of Basmati Rice. The koobideh was alright, probably should have gotten two lamb skewers instead since the lamb was pretty bomb. The lamb was super tasty, well spiced and grilled to perfection. Lemon and Saffron Prawns. With Grilled Zucchini and Butter Sauce served with Basmati Rice. This was pretty good. The prawns were delicious and the zucchini was well grilled and juicy. I go think the prawns were frozen, not fresh, but nevertheless quite tasty. Beef Combo Kebab Platter. Kebab Barg (Grilled Beef Filet) and Chicken Kebab with Roasted Tomatoes and a side of Basmati Rice. The beef was noms, the chicken was a little on the dry side. The beef was the best out of all the kebab meats for sure. Juicy and tender and grilled to perfection. NOMS. Baklava. Pistachio filled Filo Dough with Rose Water and Cardamom. This was pretty damn good because of the rose water. Usually the baklavas I eat are sweetened with honey rather than flavored with rose water and this one was pretty good. It was yummy and not overly sweet like baklavas sometimes are. I also liked the chocolate syrup decoration on the plate. Persian Ice Cream. Rose Water and Pistachio flavors. This was nommy! I love the taste of rose water and it being in ice cream made it 493232432x better. It was creamy and had the right degree of sweetness. Even the pistachio ice cream had some rose water in it, I just love the fragrance rose water brings to a dessert. Overall, their food wasn't that great, definitely not worth the 4 stars all over Yelp. Their desserts were good, however, but unfortunately that's not all a dinner consists of. This is probably one of the worst experiences I had!!! I took my boyfriend to this Persian restaurant to try kabob. As soon as we entered one lady asked us to sit right next to the entrance at a very small table which said reserved on it! There were two other tables empty so my boyfriend asked if we can get the other one but she said that was reserved. Then I asked if we can get the other empty one and she got irritated and said I NEED MY TABLES FOR CUSTOMERS!!! I just don't understand what we were to her then!!!
