We could talk about the awesome homage paid to Japan or literally the cheapest prices I've ever seen for Pappy Van Winkle. We could talk about the highball and Japanese street food and hospitality and it's all worthy of 5 stars. But the fact that this business is opening itself up because we can't sit inside during COVID to other businesses as a shop of sorts so that small businesses in their community can survive during these times speaks volumes. These guys support their community and as a tourist when I'm back in Louisville I know this will be one of my first spots back. You guys are dope. read more

This is a pretty cool spot. The draft list has a good selection of rare beers on tap. They also have a nice selection of chips and snacks that are somewhere between 1-4 dollars on the wall. This place is perfect to stop into on any given night to have a couple of drinks. The back room has a small stage and nice area for music shows or hanging out. There's another side room with two pool tables. The bar and rooms are spacious so any games you are playing you've got plenty of room to aim the pool stick at the cue. Nerd Louisville hosts some really fun nights here on Sundays and Mondays. Sundays they have a night of Tabletop RPGs hosted all around the different rooms in Kaiju. On Mondays, there is apparently a board games and bourbon night. Definitely a nice set of activities to get into on some other wise boring nights. If you live in Germantown or if you just like to stop by neighborhood bars for beer, definitely give Kaiju a shot. read more

This place is a gem and I love it. It's got Japanese monsters and video game memorabilia all over, there are multiple tvs with different gaming systems hooked up, a collection of board games to play, and a great selection behind the bar. Although this is a new establishment it still has the dive bar vibe. Cheap drinks, pool, mismatched furniture. The thing I really love is having the food truck parked outside. Great snacks for long nights of socializing and drinking. The food truck is also priced towards the lower end of food trucks in town so when you are a young professional in town on a budget it is a really nice addition. The bar is generally only staffed with two people so waits can be a little long if the place is busy but not too terrible. I have been here a few times and will continue to come back. I'm really looking forward to the summer months and enjoying this place. Hopefully the neighbors will embrace this addition to the neighborhood. read more

Let me just start off by commending Kaiju on the snack shelf they have. They have some nice choices for the drunk and hungry and the prices are very reasonable at $1-3. I can get behind that. More bars should have snacks available. Sweet! This review mainly pertains to my experience at Kaiju this past Saturday evening. I came to Kaiju from Nachbar, along with my boyfriend and best girl friend. There was a friendly guy taking a $5 cover charge at the door because of a band playing in the back. We proceeded into the bar and got a round of drinks and a snack. We went on from there to chat and stuff our faces with the snack we just bought. A little while later, I was standing at the end of the packed bar with my boyfriend, while the friend who we came with stood at the middle of the bar with another friend of hers she had found there. [Side note: On this particular evening, there were two bartenders: one young woman who was very timid, with a naturally nervous kind of expression, but friendly, and a somewhat athletic looking man with long, dark hair, styled into a double man bun (hereinafter referred to as Double Man Bun).] The female bartender approached and took an order of 2 drinks for my boyfriend, one of which was a drink for our friend who was standing at the middle of the bar. At this point, my boyfriend was slightly inebriated but nowhere close to being wasted. As she finished preparing our drinks down the bar, my boyfriend did something mildly foolish and stepped about 2 feet behind the bar to call to her, pointing towards our friend to indicate that the second drink went to her. While his intentions were good in doing this, it was admittedly poor judgment to step beyond the side-end of the bar where we had been standing. The female bartender looked a bit confused at first and perhaps a little freaked out, but she ended up handing the drink over to our friend, so I think she understood what was happening. It was Double Man Bun's reaction that I really want to describe. As soon as my boyfriend took his first step behind the bar, Double Man Bun turned from where he was standing near the other end of the bar and behind the female bartender, and his face transformed into a rage-filled expression which immediately preceded his yelling at the very top of his lungs, " GET THE FUCK OUT FROM BEHIND THE BAR!!!! GET BACK NOW!!". His sudden transformation from average Double Man Bun into Super Saiyan Double Man Bun happened in a matter of approximately 1.5 seconds. Let me be clear, my guy is about 6'4" and can be pretty intimidating, but he's as nice as they come. As soon as Double Man Bun started screaming, heads started turning in the bar. The other clientele got quiet and looked around like "What the hell is going on?". You would have thought the place was being robbed. My boyfriend simply put his hands up and began walking backwards as if to say "Hey man, I was just trying to save your co-worker a trip" as he stepped back and to the side of me at the very end of the bar. At this point, Double Man Bun was unsatisfied with how far he had moved, so he continued in his vein-popping, raging voice, "YOU'RE STILL BEHIND THE BAR! GET THE FUCK BACK!". My boyfriend stepped around me and behind me, and Double Man Bun's anger began to fade as he went back to the other clientele standing in front of him, presumably awe-struck at the astonishing furor they had just witnessed. I felt the need to describe this event in detail because I found it to be absolutely ridiculous and actually kind of humorous. Double Man Bun's reaction was as if my boyfriend was wielding a machete or strapped with a suicide vest; not just some guy who took two steps behind the bar and was trying to tell the other bartender something. A simple "Excuse me sir, could you please step back around the bar? We can't have customers back here." would have sufficed. Maybe even a moderately raised voice saying, "Hey man you can't be back here!". But Double Man Bun's incredible man bun-rage doesn't seem to identify with simple, professional communication. Most bartenders naturally expect their clients to at times do things which would normally be deemed inappropriate. When these things happen, the goal, in common practice, is to deescalate the situation with tact. What Double Man Bun actually did was escalate the situation and alienate himself. I have no doubt that others standing around were like "Damn, that dude is crazy" and they weren't saying that about my boyfriend. With a temper like that, he might find a more suitable line of work perhaps on a SWAT team or as a REPO man. Anyways, I'll probably be back because the snacks rock and the drinks are reasonably priced. Whatever you do, don't step anywhere near behind the bar when Double Man Bun is working and you'll probably be okay. read more

Extremely disappointed. I live just around the corner and have been wanting to try this place for a while. I have noticed this bar has been quite busy on weekends so decided to stop by on a week night. Just so happened to be the very late "christmas" party for Kaiju and their sister restaurant Dragon Kings Daughter. Not only was the bar closed to the public, the group of people I showed up with, as well as myself, were instantly judged by the employees attending the get together. Someone walked passed us not even 5 minutes after arriving muttering something very nasty under their breath. Then waited until we walked away to yell "why don't you go hop a freight train and get your fucking legs cut off". Actually having friends who this has happened to I take serious offense. Needless to say I will not be stopping by any time soon or recommending it to anyone I know. . read more

i love this bar and go every night. however tonight was HORRIBLE. i lost my ID last night. so i've been taking my passport to every bar i go to. because in Kentucky , it's the MOST ACCEPTABLE form of ID. i went into kaiju and showed the bartender , james , my ID. and he said that he personally doesn't accept passports as an acceptable form of ID. even tho it's the most acceptable form of ID in kentucky. i feel very mad. like what the fuck james ?? so i came to Magnolia bar and showed them my passport, apoplectic that i lost my license. and they told me "hey , a passport is better than a drivers license" BYEEERE read more

This place is tight. I actually go when they are open to THE PUBLIC and have always gotten great service. Moderately priced drinks, chill atmosphere, diverse beer selection. The bartenders are thoughtful, knowledgeable and witty. A step up from the other dive bars I've been to in Louisville, but also really casual. 5 stars for the monsters! Ive been to Kaiju multiple times for the great beer selection, music and late night games of pool. I was always excited to see what the DKD crew would do about getting a bite to eat at this joint... and now I know! Last night was the opening of their accompanying food truck parked right outside. It is a game changer! The Okonomayaki, the Karaage and the Yakisoba are all killer! I have driven past Kaiju so many times and thought, "I should check this place out". I finally did! A group of about 6 or 7 of us walked in around 10pm on a Friday night for a drink and to check out the music. The drinks are very reasonably priced. I went with an Evil Twin IPA. The bartenders are friendly and were moving pretty quickly, especially with the number of people standing around the bar waiting to order. There is a middle (almost side) room that is pretty small but super chill. Some tables, chairs and a few lamps to set the lighting really made it my favorite spot to hang out for the evening. We also went to the back room for a bit to check out the music. They had a couple djs taking turns, spinning some tunes. It is a decently sized room with huge speakers and plenty of room to dance. They have tables along the side and a counter with chairs for your drinks (and other belongings) in the back. The vibe was pretty much straight house music while we were there. I would have liked to hear a mix of stuff. I am sure they switch it up on different nights. I have to mention the snack situation that they have going on at Kaiju! Wowza! I love it! So many choices from fresh popcorn to candy to cheez-its to vegan jerky. And the prices on the snacks are better than you might expect. $1-$3 for all of them except the jerky. I am confident that I will be coming back sooner than later. read more

I love Kaiju dearly and they totally get 5 stars from me, best bar around by far but I just tried their snack bar, I ordered tofu rolls while my girlfriend ordered shrimp ones. I didn't know they would be put in the same plate, and I (a 12 year+ vegetarian) ate the shrimp rolls after I had inspected one of them and it turned out to be tofu. After discovering I had eaten shrimp I ran home to throw it up and cried the rest of the night. This is kind of a shit thing to do when you offer to cater to vegetarians without telling them there is hidden shrimp on their plate. I'm super bummed out and it ruined my night for sure. Please separate tofu and meat dishes or at the very least let the customers know that they share a plate. read more

I don't remember how long ago - wait, yes I do...It wasn't Kaiju, then. Since the place became Kaiju, it's been an - ever-improving, episode of "WTF?!". I am a performance artist. I've been studying comedy - for a year, & - recently (like, TODAY/Derby Day & Cinco de Mayo - May 5th, 2018) gained permission to promote my willingness to deliver copies of "CALYPSO" - by David Sedaris, while he is on tour (promoting the book PREVIOUS to this). When I signed-up for my FIRST comedy "open mic" (during Kaiju's "Comedy Attack!"), I decided to name myself "Calypso" - this was a YEAR ago! So, when I visited with David - before his April 24th, 2018 show @ Kentucky Center's "Whitney Hall" (He's a ROCK STAR!), I saw "CALYPSO" on a promo sticker. I brought ONE to him, & asked him if I could have it. Then, I told him about how long I'd been using the name. He signed my autograph with "a.k.a. Calypso" - after my name. Now, I am hoping to have people order the book from me. I have a "Seller's Permit" & permission to ask Kaiju patrons if they are interested in the book. yAy! read more

I went with a friend to shoot some pool after work a few weeks ago, had a great time and the female bartender was fantastic. By fantastic I mean she asked what we wanted to drink, then gave it to us and was friendly in doing so. Basic stuff. The next Friday we decided to go again. Different bartender who seemed more interested in showing off his sci fi knowledge than in getting us beers, but eh we did get served in between his discussions with the people at the bar. Yesterday I go in and sit at the bar, since my friend isn't there yet. The person that I assume is the bartender (only because he is behind the bar) is talking to a female that is standing up on my side of the bar, about dogs in the establishment. I patiently wait until they get finished talking so I can order a couple of beers, but after 5 minutes where he hasn't even acknowledged my existence, I call my friend and tell him to head to a different bar and I leave. I mean I walked past the bartender and sat down about 3 seats away. I could hear their conversation and not even a "I'll be right with you" or anything? Not sure if this was the same guy as previously but the female bartender was great and everyone else didn't want to serve us. great bar though. What a shame. read more

i love having this great bar right across the street, BUT...i'm at 1011 and walking is a problem if i have to park anywhere but the space in front of my storefront. i put out a traffic cone when i'm gonna be gone to the dog park around 3, every day, however, a couple days ago someone moved the cone and left only a tiny space for me. one of the car owners moved her car and i'm very grateful for that, but i hope that this doesn't happen, often. see, here's the deal: i've got 2 dogs and, frankly, i'm old and arthritis is my constant companion. if, somehow, this message could get out to the fine people who enjoy kaiju i'd be very grateful. like i said: it's grand having good people enlivening the neighborhood, but i'm hoping this message gets out to let them know i need that parking space. am trying to get the city to designate my space as disabled street parking . . . thanks for listening . . . 1011 east oak . . . read more
