Awesome experience. Nice little "hole in the wall" mind of place. Very friendly and nice atmoshphere. They were open on Memorial Day, got in and seated right away. I ordered a Bento Box (3 items) $16.95. They brought me edamame as part of the meal. The miso soup was sever piping hot, which I love. The salad was mixed greens (much healthier and tastes better). I ordered the tempura, sashimi (3 piece - ebi, maguro and sake) and the sushi (3 piece - maguro, sake and yellowtail) all nice size pieces and very fresh. There was a nice wedge of orange and then they served green tea ice cream with the meal. Would highly recommend and will be going back soon! read more

Family owned business. I used to come here all the time with my friends and family when I was in High School. This Japanese restaurant is probably one of the most reasonable priced places for their quality that I've been to. They're next to Mountain's Mike's Pizza and a salon. They've been around for long time so their interior design/decorated is a bit dated. However, their food is always good and lunch special here is unbeatable. It's only around $10 for a full lunch (2 items and you can choose whatever 2 you want on their menu). Oh and they also give you miso soup as complimentary starters all the time. The soup is good and sometimes if you ask nicely, they will give you another bowl~ The owners are nice and their service is good. Yes sir, upgrading to 5 stars. This place is terrific. Super fast service, super friendly staff. The food is by far the best Japanese food I have ever had and the price can't be beat. We ate until so full felt like bursting. The sushi is excellent, and the BBQ short ribs I had were exquisite. (exquisite?) Wow that's a big work for me. Love eating here. You get 2 appetizers to start with which is automatic and after that your food arrives. During the course of your meal you sometimes receive something free, like last night we got a large piece of fish, free. My sister and her boyfriend come here all the time. She decided to take me out one day too. Her boyfriend is Korean and so are the owners of the establishment. He likes to listen in on their conversations then tell us what they're talking about. We came in at lunch time when it was really busy and there were no good seats that couldn't accommodate us and my toddler son. They sat us in a back table that is probably their personal family table. It was so nice of them. I really appreciated it because my son is a messy eater and sometimes needs some room to eat. We kept our rolls simple because my sister isn't that adventurous. Caterpillar Roll, and another roll with Unagi because I just adore Unagi. I had my standard Tuna Sashimi. It was very fresh worth five stars alone. All of our rolls were very fresh. Service was impeccably executed for how crazy busy this place was. I rarely pass up the chance to have sushi. Love it. I admit that I am not super adventurous and prefer my fish "not raw". Sometimes it can be a challenge to find a place that features enough of a selection to please both lovers of raw and not raw sushi. Fortunately for me, Kaki Sushi fit the bill. I found out about Kaki Sushi on Yelp mobile. I am so happy that I did! As we entered the restaurant we were greeted and seated very quickly. It took us a while to decide on what we wanted to try since the menu was quite extensive. No rush or pressure from our server which I appreciated. She gave us our water and hot green tea while we pondered over the menu. After making our selections we were promptly served our edamame and egg pancake (not sure about the proper name). Yummy! We were then served bowls of miso soup and a little salad with a very tasty dressing. Tasty! When our orders arrived we couldn't help but devour them. Everything was prepared perfectly. After rubbing our now round tummies we were served dishes of green tea ice cream. So delicious and the perfect palate cleanser after our meals. I wanted to like this place, only I feel it was a bit over-rated. First off, there's just too many sushi joint in the Pleasanton area, and almost all of them average four stars. A la Flava Flav..."Don't believe the hype" with this place. Yes I agree the staff was nice and the set up was somewhat Japan-like, cool. So, onto the rolls, you can't mess up a Cherry Blossom roll. The tuna didn't taste fresh to me. They pieces broke apart, and it pretty much had mushy rice. I wanted to try a place that's a bit different from our usual and I was really happy with here. The food was pretty good and the service was great. I'm pretty sure we were greeted in Korean but they certain can do good Japanese food. They gave us edamame and a free fried fish appetizer (which was delicious and really light). The place itself had the Japanese bar feel with tables sectioned off. I saw several families with younger children and the table setting allowed the family to have their own dinner privately without the worry that a child climbing around would bother another customer. We ordered a grilled calamari appetizer, a beef sukiyaki, an o.m.g roll? and a crazy monkey roll. The rolls arrived quickly, then sukiyaki and then the calamari. I loved the crazy monkey roll; it was fill with a lot of sashimi but it was a bit loose (a bit difficult to pick up with a chopstick). They had a wasabi mayo that lined the plate, looked light neon green so I was a bit precarious about trying it. The o.m.g roll looked really nice and was pretty good too (although I mostly stuck with the crazy monkey). As for the sukiyaki, there are a lot of noodles in there which I loved. I kind of wish I had a bowl of rice to go with the sukiyaki broth (I forgot if it came with rice or not). Lastly, the grilled calamari was absolutely delicious! The pieces were huge and wasn't too chewy. I was a bit surprised that there were tempura calamari on the dish too, was not expecting it. Final Thoughts: All in all, it was a delicious dinner and ended nicely with free green tea ice cream (or mango if you like). I grew up in Pleasanton when Sozo was pretty much the only player in the sushi game in town. I came back to P-town to have lunch with a high school buddy and came to Kaki Sushi because it had 4 stars on Yelp. It was a bit of a let down; the service was okay, but I've had a lot better when it comes to the freshness of the sushi. I ordered a pink dragon roll: salmon and tuna on top of an unagi and avocado roll. The rice was too crumbly and kind of dry. The salmon and tuna were edible, but seemed kind of warm-ish. Not warm. Just not super cold... like they had been overly handled. The miso soup was okay and they tried to be nice by giving us a complimentary crab cake (for each of us), but I was put off by the amount of oil they used to pan fry these crab cakes. There were brownish oil streaks on the little plate that it was served on. In terms of taste, it was slightly (very very slightly) spicy. I took a bite and then stopped. This coming from a girl who likes a clean plate. I regret not getting a lunch box, but I don't think I'll be back here. There are too many other Japanese places in Pleasanton now. Perhaps they might fare better if the wait staff recommends certain items? Just a suggestion. Best of luck to them, though... I didn't realize that it was Korean owned (Korean music in the background and Go Stop card posters splayed on the wall on top of the sushi bar). The Hamachi and Tuna were so fresh and they give you a good portion of fish. They aren't heavy on the rice or stingy with their fish, so I'm definitely a fan! I feel bad saying this since the waitresses are all older, but their service could use some improvement. We asked for water while ordering and never got it. Half way through our meal I realized we never got it and tried to flag one of the ladies down for a few minutes. When I got her attention, she said one second, and never came back. When I asked another lady for water, she said one second, and forgot. After about 5 minutes, she passed our table again, realized she forgot our water, and ran to get it. I do appreciate how apologetic she was though. They definitely need a larger staff, especially during the lunch rush. The ice cream they give you with your meal is ehh... Be sure to ask for a Bonus Card. You can earn 5% back from the purchases you make. After you earn $10 you can redeem the card or let it keep going. Awesome! Customer loyalty has its benefits! I tried out a taco sushi today (not tako sushi). It was salmon, scallops, and avocados wrap in tofu skin (inari). It was one of their specials. I liked it. It might not be for everyone but it's pretty good. The Red Dragon Roll is something I highly recommend. That was a freakin' good roll. The scallop kushi was OK. It was a bit on the sweet side, but I just wanted to try it out. My sister had the bento box which is a great deal and incredibly filling. My brother-in-law had the sashimi platter which was cut thick but tasted pretty good. The thing I like most about Kaki Sushi though is that they openly welcome kids. I've never felt my niece more welcomed at a restaurant than here at Kaki Sushi. There were many tables also with children present that had a great time. Kaki Sushi gives kids these make shift chopsticks bound to rubber bands and paper that allow kids to learn to use chopsticks. It's very similar to tongs in a way! It makes it fun for the kids, that's what matters. I love the fact they give complimentary green tea ice cream to adults and mango ice cream to kids after the meal. I came here with a friend a couple days ago since we hadn't seen each other in ages. There was food to be had and a lot of life to catch up on, so Pleasanton was somewhat of a halfway meeting point. Prices aren't bad, especially for all the free things you get! Free miso soup, free edamame, free potato cake + a free somethingsomething white fish that they asked if we wanted to try (I forgot what it was called) that was amazinggggg. I suspect that ice cream may also be free. :O I'd eaten a little bit beforehand, so we split 3 rolls (Honey Honey, Rock N' Roll & the Washington Roll [somewhat reminiscent of the Alaska roll at Mad Fish in Fremont, but better because there's even more salmon to be had]. The fish was really fresh and we were really happy with the food, but what really made this place awesome was the service. It's phenomenal! :] I think we finished eating in an hour, but we sat and talked for another two (it's really been a while :O just for the record, there wasn't a line or anything), and received no dirty looks. Free edamame & miso soup :) My friend and I tried the O.M.G. and the nemo? roll. The OMG roll was good except the sauce was neon colored. Neon colored stuff should not be in food hahaha. I liked the nemo roll more, it had an assortment of cooked fish, on top of the rice rolls. The nemo roll takes a bit longer to come out since it is baked. Pleasanton is home to some of the most fresh sushi spots in the tri-valley. But during my visit at Kaki, I had to say that the fish was just OK. We ordered 2 rolls (Sushi boy and the OMG roll) and and gyoza for lunch! The meal came with complimentary miso soup, edamame, and green tea ice cream which is a major plus. We visited Kaki Sushi because we wanted to try another Japanese restaurant in our area. Kali is easy to find if you know where the Walmart Neighborhood store is. The restaurant is located on the north side of the strip mall. As many people have said, the staff is super cool and friendly. As I'm Korean, I recognized most if not all of the staff there are Korean. My Taiwanese fiancé noticed that they're playing Korean music in the background too. Anyways it's all good. Dae Han min guk ;) As was the food, but somethings weren't as good as I'd prefer. First what's nice is that upon sitting, they bring you out a complimentary salad and miso soup. I liked their miso soup better than Meiko's because it was less salty. The salad was average. I ordered grilled mackerel (Saba) and the lady ordered sashimi. We also ordered the agedashi tofu. I'd say her sashimi was pretty fresh and tasty. The tuna was especially good. My Saba was unfortunately a little overcoooked but still good. They give you two pieces, so I had some left over. Oh after ordering dinner entrees, they give you a complimentary fried fish. In Korean they call this complimentary bonus dish "service" or in Konglish "suhr-bis-oo" (phonetically spelled out). Just so you know :). This fish actually was better than my Saba. The agedashi tofu was outstanding. It was fried with a tempura batter and was crispy on the outside. They didn't bathe it in a bowl of the sauce either. This is how I prefer it served so I don't have to eat it too quickly lest the coating become too mushy. Man, i really did want to like this place more. My boyfriend and I decided to eat here because we were in the area and it was reviewed very well. Honestly, i am not sure why. Pros: We got there 45 minutes before closing on a Wednesday night, so there was no wait, which was nice. Service was quick, friendly, and attentive. Interior is cute and small. lots of drawings from kids are posted by the entrance. You get a lot of freebies, but none that were amazing (miso soup - not too salty/semi watered down, edamame, soggy korean pancake thing). I want to give a better rating for this alone, but i cannot. Cons: Sadly, the sushi is not so great and this is a sushi joint. We got one of the special rolls called Daniel's choice - it is a softshell crab roll that is topped with scallops or fish. i am not even sure what it was. It was basically a softshell crab roll, which on it's own was probably fine, BUT it was DRENCHED in this weird chopped up raw fish or scallop mayonnaise mixture (mind you, this is NOT what it looked like in the picture - had we known it was covered in mayonnaise, you can bet we would NEVER order this since we both don't like mayonnaise). All i could taste was the mayonnaise sauce and i was trying to drown it out with wasabi. it didn't work and i knew it was REALLY bad when my boyfriend was dipping into the wasabi too because he does not like adding sauce to anything. we were both seriously trying to force it down to not waste a $13+ roll We also ordered nigiri, which should be safe since they are simple, meaning you cannot hide the quality or anything because it is just the fish on sushi rice. sadly, these too were mediocre. We had snapper, halibut, albacore, salmon, yellowtail, and salmon roe. Each order comes with 3 pieces, which, when we first got the order, was kind of exciting, but as we were eating, those extra pieces were quite difficult to stomach. Since this is the first time i have had snapper and halibut, i cannot say that these were truly not good. what i can say about these 2 cuts is that they are chewy and hard to get down. It is almost like lobster sashimi, so if you like that texture, i think snapper and halibut are good choices, but as for me, i am not a fan. As for the other 4, i have them quite often and the ikura was dry and weirdly sticky, like they were a bit old. the yellowtail and albacore were mushy, like they were frozen, defrosted, and sliced for sushi. the salmon, though being the best of the bunch, was kind of bland seemed frozen as well. overall - I am not a fan. i would not return. I was NOT impressed by their sushi. Their rolls are not properly rolled. They must have one lazy Sushi Master. It's falls apart before you can stuff a piece in your mouth. Call me a sushi nazi but if it's going in my mouth, I want it to look presentable. Keep it "nice and tight" please. And their mochi balls? Comes with chocolate syrup and whip cream. I need to update my review because the service that we received today was the complete opposite of our last visit (see my previous review). Our server, Joyce, did an amazing job tonight. There were only 2 servers for the whole place, but they both rocked it! She made sure to check up on us and ask if we needed anything. It turns out that Kaki has a new owner now. Maybe the service was not up to par due to the transition. They cleaned the place up a bit. I'm not sure if they repainted the walls or if they just look different bc they took down most of the unnecessary decorations. I've always felt like the decor here was a little much and I love how it's a lot more simple now. As usual, the food was great. Definitely try their hand rolls because their portions are huge! As soon as we walked into the restaurant , we got greeted and we got our table. The restaurant is a pretty small place but it wasn't super busy or anything for lunch hour. they have a large selection of rolls and it was hard to pick. F O O D Comes with complimentary edamame and miso soup Nemo roll (3/5 stars) - this roll was a regular California roll with a different variety of cooked fish on top. Kind of like a lion king roll style sushi but it wasn't baked enough. So it just looked like mayo and fish on top of a California roll. It was average. Grilled Squid (2/5 stars) - the texture of the squid was fine . But it wasn't grilled enough to have that grilledddd carcinogen taste. The sauce on top of it wasn't That good. It also comes with squid tempura. The batter for that wasn't good... Sadly. Wished it came with a mayo dip for the grilled squid though. read more

They are Korean-owned and they serve miso soup, a little small pancake appetizer and mango OR green tea ice cream for dessert for lunch. For dinner they have edamame and a large fried fish filet. Not sure if these are consistent or if they change depending on the day. Their sushi is average, I have had better crafted, better cut, and just..prettier sushi rolls. They don't taste bad by any means, but they aren't great. The quality of the rolls just doesn't meet my standards. However, it is reasonably priced for what they offer, and the service is excellent. The chef's sashimi platter had thick cuts of fish, the sake sashimi was to my liking and sake sashimi is the one I care about the most. The tuna sashimi was good too, I didn't care too much for the other fish. The interior is fun, the walls had lots of children's drawings about Kaki Sushi, geiko miniatures, and vibrant wallpaper, all of which I thought was very cute. My friends and I were driving up from socal and hit traffic and figured we may as well grab dinner instead of sitting through it. We found this place on yelp and was pretty impressed. It must have been a good night because contrary to other reviewers the waitress was really nice and accommodating. We were offered free miso soup, fried swordfish, edamame, and this Korean potato pancake. Not bad! We ordered crunchy roll, Rainbow roll, omg roll (fried unagi and shrimp tempura with spicy tuna) , and Washington roll (salmon upon salmon topped with lemon slice). The prices are excellent for the food, and you get some delicious complimentary ice cream at the end of your meal. Sit at the bar on weekends and you'll usually share some nice Sake with the Chef. Try it! Hand Rolls are nice sized and most importantly, tasty. Their grilled an fried fare is great as well, and they have a nice exotic flavor to them. Free edamame, miso soup and ice cream! The only downside to the freebies is that the bowls they use for miso soup sometimes smell like soap which throws me off when I am drinking the soup and smelling the soap... but at least I know it's clean... :P Their sushi isn't the blow- you- away freshest fish, but the quality is consistently good. My co-worker got me hooked on the Orange Head roll ($8) which is great if you love salmon. :) The lunch 2 Item bento special is a pretty good deal which they list on a chalkboard outside the door. When I am especially hungry, I order the California Roll and Terriyaki chicken. The chicken is grilled well and is tender and delicious. The California Roll is pretty standard. The 2 item bento is usually enough for me to split into 2 meals (Granted, I'm kind of a petite girl). The service is great! My co-workers and I eat here probably once every 2 weeks, and the servers always greet us warmly and have even memorized our regular orders. Once when one of the people in our group did not finish her udon (It's a pretty big order) and asked for a container to take home the rest, the server kindly asked if there was anything wrong with the meal. All of the ladies are so sweet. Without asking, they usually give us separate checks and allow us each to use card! Almost unheard of these days. We will be back! read more

The yelpers speak the truth! =) This place is excellent! Sashimi was fresh, sushi was delicious and nicely balanced, and portions were more than generous. The prices are like any other average Japanese restaurant in the area (and there are lots of 'em in Pleasanton), but more quality and amount for the buck. My wife and I shared the Pleasanton Special Roll and the Ichiban roll, along with an order of Chicken Udon. The Pleasanton roll was huge. There were 2 pieces of shrimp tempura in the roll that stretched the entire length, so each piece had a double portion of shrimp! The salmon topper was fresh, and melted in your mouth. The Ichiban roll was a simpler roll, but was long enough to make up about 8, maybe 9, pieces. The ingredients were nicely balanced. The Chicken udon was AWESOME. Noodles were perfectly fresh and chewy. Broth was tasty, and the chicken... oh the chicken! Grilled and plentiful. We finished the noodles and other stuff and there was still a whole lot of chicken left! Service... EXCELLENT. We were well attended. Waitress even noticed one of the small bowls she gave us was dirty without us mentioning, and immediately exchanged it. They also served us Swai Fish, compliments of the chef, and free ice cream at the end... Kaki Sushi is definitely one of our now favorite sushi places in the Tri Valley. The only negative... the table cloths... oh they gotta get rid of those table cloths! It was like something passed over from a Armadillo Willy's BBQ joint! Great sushi spot during the weekdays! Service is friendly, fast, and reliable. Every visit I have been sat down immediately and served complimentary miso soup with edamame before even having my order taken. For such quick service, I was worried the quality of the food prepared may not be be as high. Fortunately, every order I've made has been delicious and never left me feeling unsatisfied in any way! I will definitely continue to visit this spot when my cravings for sushi or a bento box hit. Would definitely recommend! read more

Probably the best sushi I've had in the Tri-Valley so far! You have to try the OMG roll, it was so good we ordered it twice. Service and Ambiance typical of a sushi restaurant, nothing out of the ordinary. Definitely would come back for the amazing rolls! read more
