Been here a few times for weekday lunch. It looks unassuming from the outside, located in a regular strip mall. But once inside the decor is transforming, with beautiful lanterns and Japanese influences. Feels dark and quiet. Service is always excellent. They have the usual lunch special options and donburi. Their sushi list is quite extensive! I always have a hard time picking a roll because everything sounds so good. Last time I really enjoyed the sushi boy (salmon, avocado, tempura). Food was so-so. I'm not really a fan of the sticks of imitation crab meat in sushi and that's what they do here, I guess. The poke salad was good and had a decent amount of fish but halfway through it became more obvious that there was just too much dressing on the dish and it overpowered everything else. The free edamame, veggie pancake, miso soup and green tea ice cream was nice. My big problem was that there was a medium sized bug crawling on the wall next to our table. I was freaked out and called the waitress over to take care of it but she freaked out even more than I did and ran to call someone else. She told another girl (I'm guessing her manager) who didn't rush over at all and I stood by my table watching the bug crawl almost on to my table and then eventually start moving down the wall until he was so low that you couldn't see him anymore because of the restaurant's dark lighting. Then the workers sent out a guy, who I'm guessing works in the kitchen, but by the time he came to kill it, we had already lost it. so the workers kind of just laughed it off. Pretty disturbing that there was a gross bug crawling around and even worse that they did nothing to get rid of it. This is a fun restaurant buried in a strip mall. The business is family run, with friendly staff. When thinking sushi we normally think sashimi and sometimes rolls. Kaki had plenty of both. We had a sashimi deluxe dinner with 16 pieces for a reasonable price. All fish looked fresh and the pieces were a nice size. The ambiance is nicely Asian. On top of this we were greeted with edamame beans and a fried swordfish appetizer at no charge. After the meal, we were served mango or green tea ice cream again at no charge. So at the end of the day we had great fish, and a nice roll that was served by friendly staff at an affordable price. What more could you ask for. read more

Wow!! I went here today for the first time and it really did exceed my expectations. The only thing better than the delicious food was the fantastic service we received from the moment we stepped in! Visited tonight for my daughters birthday. There was 5 of us my wife me and 3 kids. We were the only people seated there. The service was slow. When we received our check there was a service fee added to the bill. I asked what this was, and the lady said it was because we were a large party. We were a family of 5. This fee came out to $15.00. our bill subtotal was $69.70. I asked the what was the percent she added, she had no idea and said the computer figures it out. There is no signs on the wall or menu stating the charge a service fee for 5 or more people. Stay away from this place. They are crooks!!! read more

I'm a big fan of this place! This was my third trip here, with my first time being in late 2016. I would come more often, but I no longer live in the area. They started us off with delicious hot miso soup, hot green tea (quality tea!), and iced water. Besides our entrees and rolls, we also got side salads and ice cream (mango or coconut pineapple were the choices today) scoops complimentary. Salmon teriyaki: honestly, nothing really blew my mind about this. But the giant sweet orange slice that you could actually eat and it's not just garnish, with the sprout salad and pickled daikon were nice touches. Chicken sukiyaki: piping hot! Even after we ate our fill of it, there was so much steam coming out of it. Very flavorful! The noodles weren't too dense or too soft like I've had at other restaurants. The flavor is very salty, but just like how sukiyaki should be. Unaten & Super Spider rolls: something I noticed about the rice is that it's not very vinegary. It doesn't stick together as much as sushi rice I've had at other places, but it doesn't necessarily taste bad or make it a bad texture. The eel, avocado, and all the different elements in the roll tasted fresh. The roll itself is pretty wide, so this is maybe somewhere you don't want to go on a first date and order rolls because you either eat the entire piece in one overly giant bite or you bite into it and risk it falling apart all over your face, plate, and lap. Always a short wait if any. Never been disappointed with their sushi. Price has gone up, but as are the times! Well worth it.

This place has a poor business practice of including 20% service fees for parties of four or more. The problem I faced is they considered my 14 month old baby as a member of the party even though she did not eat or drink at the restaurant. I am not sure if they charge this service fee with everyone or only specific groups of people but they do not have any information about this fee posted on their menu or anywhere in the restaurant. As others have noted, Kaki Sushi is now open for sit down dining. We ordered two rolls, Aloha and Stephany Special, and a Chirashi. Out of the two rolls, I preferred the Aloha due to the lack of sauce on it. I felt like the sauce on the Stephany Special detracted from the roll by overpowering the taste of the fish with its acidic taste (maybe cream cheese or ranch based sauce?). For the Aloha roll. I was able to enjoy the spicy tuna and tuna in it fully. The Chirashi had the usual cuts of fish and the quality of it was up to standards. Oddly, the tomago stood out the most to me. It seemed like the egg flavor was really able to shine in the piece I got and was not overly sweet like how some restaurants do it. Overall, the sushi was up to standards and at a cheaper price point than most other restaurants in the area. I would not mind eating here again. read more

Granted, I am ALWAYS down for ice cream, but I prefer it when dessert is the last part of a highlight reel of other great dishes that comprised lunch or dinner. My friend and I ordered various sushi rolls (rainbow, cherry blossom, shrimp crunch) and everything seemed pretty bland and not very fresh, and the seafood yaki udon dish was overloaded with soy sauce and also kind of gritty (probably from the shellfish included in the dish). The service was great - really friendly and attentive people, but overall this wasn't a restaurant I could find myself recommending over different Japanese restaurants in the area. Solid sushi place for Pleasanton! I had come here for the first time around noon on a weekday, and we just made it before the lunch rush and were able to be seated right away. The decor and ambiance is chic, yet homey at the same time. Our service was speedy, and everyone working there was so extremely friendly! I had ordered two rolls for myself: Nemo Roll (~$11) and the Pleasanton Special (~$13-$14). I had no complaints about either of them, as they were both super tasty! They have a huuuge list of special rolls for you to pick from, and with pictures + descriptions for ALL of them!! A small thing to add BUT helps with someone as indecisive as me :'). Because YOU YELPED... I FOLLOWED :) It's NEXT DOOR to *Mountain Mikes Pizza in that shopping center. We had a helluva time finding the place since it was 6pm and their BUSINESS SIGN IS BROKEN?! Took the boys (because you guys said I could). Yelpers were right, the place is kid friendly with immediate service providing: Water, Hot Tea (had to request tea for the boys) and a small bowl of edema beans. We ordered 2 rolls and the Combination Tempura. The waitress took our menus and asked, "the entree?" Uh, I dunno, I guess.... sure. Within a few minutes (fast), we all had hot bowls of miso soup and I was given a house salad (a little better than the standard iceberg with dressing). Oh that's right, I think the "entree" comes with it :) We ordered the "OMG Roll" (suggested by several) and Oh My Fucking God! This roll is FABULOUS! It had everything and the kitchen sink in it, absolutely delicious. $11.95 (see pic) Also ordered the "Crazy Roll" because it looked good and it was only $5.25 (see pic). It was also very tasty, light and flavorful with crab, avocado and stuff. Love the sauces :) The Combination Tempura ENTREE came 3 large shrimp and about 2 small handfuls of veggies (cut large). Not at all greasy. Next time I would specify the appetizer (*probably just a little less for half the price) appetizer - $6.95 vs entree - $12.95 (not worth the couple extra veggies, steamed rice and house salad) The boys asked the waitress for more edame beans and before I could tell them no (because I wanted them to eat their food), she said, "sure, no problem". After dinner they served us a dollop of french vanilla ice cream. It's obviously customary because it the bowls were iced over and the edges of the ice cream was iced over. But it the boys weren't picky and ate theirs in 3 bites *smiles* AFTER Viewing the Check, I see that we were charged for an appetizer of edame - $3.95 (I didn't ask for them, but the boys ate them, so I'm ok with that). I'll avoid the extra bowl next time :) Summary: Good Service, Fast Service, OMG Roll = YES! Was craving Japanese after a long day. There are so many options to choose from. The bento box options are amazing, they have beef,chicken,fish all served with rice,salad and soup. We ordered the dragon roll because we wanted more sushi. The beef sukiyaki has a sweet broth and veggies. At the end, we were supposed to get complimentary ice cream (mango or green tea) but we told them it was my dad's birthday and gave use fried ice cream of his choice!! This place has very good cooked Japanese dishes. The pan fried udon noodles are yummy (there is a seafood one and a beef) as well as the cooked donburis. I enjoyed my experience here because of the friendly staff and yummy food. We were immediately seated when we got there on a Tuesday night almost an hour before closing. They give you complimentary miso soup and edamame. The waitress (who I should have asked her name) was extremely friendly and gave us great service. My friend wanted a 49er roll which they didn't have but she recommended the Orange Head roll and said it was very similar. Before she brought out the roll, she asked one of the sushi chefs to cut up thin slices of lemon to put on the side of the dish. It tasted delicious! Also, I wanted the chirashi on top of a salad instead of sushi rice and she accomodated my request. The cut of sashimi was pretty big compared to other places but I'm not complaining. Tonight's sushi gave me appreciation for the importance how the rice is prepared; it's one of those things I overlooked until it wasn't good. It wasn't sushi rice. Need I say more? It's impossible to make good risotto with basmati rice, and it's impossible to make good sushi with generic long grain white rice. It reminded me of Chinese takeout rice. Texturally, it was under cooked, and it didn't stick together. That translated to very unwieldy pieces of sushi that struggled to make it from the plate, over to the soy sauce, and to my mouth without falling apart. I had to use a fork. Flavor wise, none of the characteristic vinegar flavor was in the rice. Fine. I'll say it. Compared to Amakara, the freshness of the fish was inferior. The ambience was more traditional perhaps, but IMO, less enjoyable than the energetic vibe of Amakara. The pickled ginger, too, did not seem as vibrant. That's all nitpicking. It was the rice at Kaki that will send me back into the embrace of Amakara. read more

But, it is very expensive for what you get....the lunch Undone was the smallest I have ever seen...there were 5 slices of eel in a lunch box approx 3"x5", each ell is approx the length of 1-1 1/4 inch and I think it was $17 or $18......the rolls are also the smallest I had ever seen in any Japanese restaurants......expect to order double for each person. I did not pay for it but I think the total bill is over $75 for 3 people before tax and tips. I was still hungry after dinning....had to go home and eat again. They did say the food wouldn't be ready until 11:40AM (I ordered at 11:20AM). Right when I got there though, my order was ready. This place totally exceeded my expectations. My boyfriend and I were served a small side of salmon and even ice cream on the house. Not to mention that the service from our waitress was unbelievable. She greeted us with smiles and genuinely seemed like she wanted us to have a good experience without making it feel forced. We had the Scallop Kushi (skewers), Han's Choice roll, and the Star Wars roll. All of them were great quality and a good quantity for its price. The salmon we got on the house was a little dry, but still really tasty. All of that, plus the ambiance from the relaxing music and low lighting? Just adds up to an overall great experience. I gave her two $50 bills for both of the balance's for the food. That's a total of $70 combined. So she takes the check for the $40 and I was still in my wallet trying to get the change out because my total was $40.14. So then I'm getting the change out for my $30 check which was $30.21 So she takes that it brings me my change back only. I said where is the change for the $40 check? She said that I told her I didn't want it. I never stated that I didn't want my change back. So she brings me back my change it's $10 And then she proceeds to ask me did I like her service I said I liked your service And then ask me why did I not tip her. And I'm thinking in my mind why would you ask a customer for a tip. I'm a server myself so I know about the whole tip process. But I would never sit up here and ask a customer for tip that's very disrespectful I would never do that to somebody not only that that's guilt tripping a customer into giving you a tip. Nice, quiet and inviting atmosphere tucked away in a Pleasanton strip mall. Enjoyed unexpected surprise of complimentary miso soup and edamame immediately upon seating, followed by a nice fried filet of fish complimented by a light sweet and sour fish which we washed down with a large bottle of Sapporo. My wife and son enjoyed the beef teriyaki bento boxes. Beef was very tender and the California roll with tempura were very fresh. My preference is always for rolls and sushi and Kaki does not disappoint.
