I had a business lunch for a party of 9 at Kaki, it was last minute, no reservation, 12:30 walk in, and needed to be in and out in 45 minutes to get back to court. Who does that and expects to pull it off, right? We were seated right away, they got everyone's order right, including allergy sensitivities, and had us fed and out the door in our alloted time frame. The quality of the fish here is pretty meh so I would not recommend it for any serious sashimi connoisseurs. They do provide a plethora of complimentary items - miso soup, edamame, grilled salmon, and ice cream at the end - so it's a good place for people who prefer quantity and value to quality. I got my usual nigiri trio - hotate, amaebi, and uni. The hotate was weird and didn't look or taste fresh. The amaebi was also a bit tasteless and the fried head (which is usually difficult to mess up) was breaded strangely. The uni was the only one that was pretty good. My boyfriend, however, got the chirashi and was pretty happy with it. His salmon was pretty good. Overall, I don't think this place warrants 4 stars and really wish Yelp ratings were more accurate. read more

A couple weeks ago, I had a goal...to eat at a sushi restaurant in cities that I've never ate at before (if I were going to be there for some reason). Since we had to drop by Stoneridge Mall this past Saturday and this place seems to get the best Yelp reviews in Pleasanton, we decided to check it out. When we walked in, there were no servers around. One of the sushi chefs told us to pick our own table, which we did. When we finally saw our server, we ordered a bento (chicken teriyaki with sashimi), lion king roll, explosion roll and the Chuck Norris roll. Before we got our food, we got free edamame, miso soup and a Korean pancake. The miso soup and edamame tasted the same as many other sushi places. We didn't really like the Korean pancake because it had vinegar in it. No comment on the chicken teriyaki since I didn't get to try it. The sashimi was really fresh (we got 2 thick slices of tuna and 2 thick slices of salmon). The sushi rolls were just okay. There wasn't anything special about these rolls. I wanted to like the explosion roll but I couldn't because the top of the roll was drenched in mayonnaise. After we were done, we got free ice cream (mango and green tea flavors). Both of these flavors tasted artificial. My kids also received a pack of free Korean crackers. Service was decent. We had to ask the server to refill our water and our dirty plates were not removed as soon as we were done with them. Since the table were small, it felt a little cramped with so many plates on the table. Overall, it's a decent place to eat, but I wouldn't make a special trip to this place, just for sushi. read more

I too visited in the intension of thinking "Shun" was still opened. Instead I was greeted with a huge banner stating "Grand Opening". I was totally baffled but proceeded into the location. I noticed right off the bat that they had done some remodeling and unlike the few times I visited Shun, I was instantly greeted by a packed house. Afterall this is why I picked the location, Shun did not get packed too often or maybe I was lucky and beat the lunch crowd. The decor looks much better in my opinion and the staff was extremely polite. The sushi was AVG but the total experience leads me to provide 4 stars. The food was good, a tad bit late but it was very busy so I can forgive them. I ordered some simple rolls and a few baked rolls and both were very tasty and pleasing. I think I have found another location to frequent. We shall see how this pans out but thus far I am pretty satisfied with my experience. read more

Went here for dinner. Had a 2 item combo ($12.95) which was pretty big. It had rice, deep fried tofu, inari, and my two items, chicken teriyaki and sashimi and an orange slice. We also split 3 rolls with 2 other people. The Redhead Roll (spicy) was really good and a good price ($7.95). The day that I went, the quality of the fish was really good. I have been told that this place has been consistently good. I would definitely go back to this place if I found myself in the area. It's also run by Koreans. Makes it that much better. read more

Came here for my Son's birthday- we were in town visiting from ATL. We were promptly seated- but that's where the good service stopped. We sat in the back of the restaurant for 15 mins and no one paid any attention to us- offered water- or mentioned that they would be with us soon. Hurts me to give this review cause I went once before and it wasn't bad, came in on my lunch first customer I asked if they were open and they said yes. I sat down, no one gave me a menu so I waited after a while I got up and asked for a menu. I asked the lady if it's okay if I order she said "yeah" it took me 2 minutes to look and I told her I was ready and she walked away and she told me to wait...kept waiting and kept waiting and kept waiting... killed half my lunch waiting to even have my order taken. No water no menu and when I got up I said "I'm sorry I have to go I don't have time any more, they didn't even seem like they cared. More disappointed than upset. read more

The restaurant is very clean and comfortable. They have a wide variety of appetizers and sushi rolls. Their tempura is good! Udon is chewy and the soup base is awesome. Their sushi rolls presentations are pretty, and they taste fresh. The only bad thing is that it seems like they add Unagi sauce to everything, so even when the roll doesn't have Unagi in it, it tastes like it does. Oh yeah, the waitresses are very nice. read more

Well...I decided to trust my iPhone and satisfy my cravings for sushi after running errands with in the area. In this case, technology pulled through for me! The food at this establishment is awesome, the customer service is OUTSTANDING, and the food is VERY fresh. I recommend trying out the "explosion roll" and the cucumber shrimp salad (yum). Yakitori, real sushi, gringo sushi, specialty Japanese dishes you can rarely find in the Pleasanton/Dublin/Livermore area check to all. The seafood is incredibly fresh, the yakitori is grilled perfectly and generous and i love getting little dishes that are specials or asking the the sushi San to make me something special. It's hard to go wring with nigiri or sashimi and I highly recommend trying special arrivals in intermittently like toro. The scallop yakitori is very generous and melts in your mouth, I even go so far as to let them know go very rare as it is sushi grade. It's not dirt cheap, but it is very appropriate for the quality of the food. It's a great little place, with a neat humble irasshaimase atmosphere and staff. I miss is now! read more

Came here this past Friday for lunch with co workers since there was a birthday in the group. Ordered the 2 item bento box lunch special for $9.95; mixed tempura and salmon teriyacki, yum! Went here based on yelp reviews and I wasn't that big of a fan. They have a ton of rolls, but we ordered 5 different ones and none were that great... I think their sauces just aren't that delicious and the flavor combinations were whatev... Yeah you get free miso soup, free little appetizers, and ice cream, but all of it just isn't all that great tasting. I don't think we'll be going back. read more

I used to come to Kaki a lot when I worked in Pleasanton and I was never disappointed. Juan(one of the chefs) is the shit. He's always coming up with creative rolls for me and is super friendly. The rest of the staff is sweet too. They provide complimentary soup, edamame and seafood pancakes as well as another free appetizer or roll every time I've visited. Some of my regulars include, Big Mac Chuck Norris Explosion O.M.G The fish is always fresh and price are decent. It's hard to find good Japanese restaurants in the Tri-Valley but Kaki does it for me. read more

Had the lunch special here the other day w/my GF. It was hot outside and just as hot inside. No AC; just a couple of fans. Was tempted to leave just because of that but had the urge for some Japanese food, so we stayed. There were only 2 choices for the special -- a single item combo for $8 or a two item combo for $9. The choices were chicken teriyaki, tempura, 3 pieces of sushi (maguro, ebi (for sure) and salmon (I think), California roll, a fish (think it was swordfish) and gyoza. My GF chose teriyaki and tempura and I chose teriyaki and sushi. We got 2 bento boxes that were filled w/quite a bit of chicken teriyaki; more than expected. My GF also got a nice pile of tempura w/just a couple of shirmp which was expected. However, the shrimp tempura was tough and overcooked. I got 3 relatively small pieces of sushi which were ok; nothing special about them. Also in the boxes were the typical thousand island salad, a small and somewhat dry pile of rice, a slice of orange and some pickled radishes. Also bought a glass of draft Saporro which was fine. A small bowl of edamame, a bowl of tofu miso and a small scoop of ice cream were included in the meal. Service was quick and efficient but not what I'd call friendly. Tea and water glasses were filled promptly w/o asking. No refill of the edamame was offered. Would have liked some more but the bento boxes came before I could ask for more. Even so, a good value for the the price but really nothing special about it. Other items on the menu seemed a bit expensive, which is the reason we chose the lunch special. Others mention that Kaki seems to be on the expensive side, so if you're thinking about eating here, I suggest you come for the lunch special and, if you like it, come back again for more. However, I do not think I'll be eating at Kaki again simply because there are so many other dining options in the area and no compelling reason to go back to Kaki again. read more

I came to this restaurant with another couple who had suggested this spot for dinner. We had such a blast! The staff was incredibly friendly and fun! We ordered some pretty bomb rolls: Chuck Norris and Kaki Roll (I think) --They were delicious! They also brought a complimentary dish to our table that was some sort of fried fish and that was SO yummy! I could have eaten two more! We started our meal with some complimentary edamame, which was a nice little appetizer and we followed it up with a round of Sake Bombs! This is the first Sushi restaurant I have been to where the staff actually helped you with the Sake Bombs and made it a fun experience! We had also ordered a few different shots that the chefs took with us! Upon walking into this restaurant you really don't expect much more than your average sushi restaurant where you're kind of rushed through your meal and out the door just as soon as you get there, BUT..this wasn't the case and we had such a nice evening! All of the special touches and attention to detail, both in regards to the food and their customer service, were truly what makes this place so unique! This place is awesome! Employees are amazing, very quick, and give you water soup/salad/edamame as soon as you sit down which is great. The service is super fast even when they are busy, and the rolls come out very quick and fresh. Its great that they are always so quick and efficient because many places take forever! The sashimi and sushi are always super fresh and they give you large slices and servings for a great price. Not over priced even though it could be and its still worth it. My husband and I ate here two days in a row because there were so many tempting things to try. The service is good, but as can be expected, slower when it is busier. Both days we received a complimentary appetizer, which we enjoyed. Also complimentary is miso soup and edamame to begin. They have a good variety of sushi, sashimi, nigiri, udon, donburi, bento, teriyaki, etc. We also really enjoyed the sushi rolls. Everything is fresh and well presented. Nathan and I haven't gotten out very much since we moved to Pleasanton in October from Santa Barbara. We had our favorite sushi place in SB and were hoping to find a good place in town. After doing my research on Yelp, we decided on Kaki Sushi. Let me say, it was an impressive experience. The service was excellent! We were seated immediately upon entering (the place was almost full so we got a small table that was situated way too close to the nearby tables - the only drawback, next time, we're getting a booth). We had looked at the menu online, so we knew what we wanted and ordered within 5 minutes of entering. Soup and salad arrived promptly (along with the saki). We weren't even finished with these before our food came. Our waitress came by to check on us several times throughout our meal. At one point, I took a picture of Nathan, it took less than 2 seconds for our waitress to come over and ask if we wanted her to take a photo of us together. Oh the food! It was perfect!! The miso soup was warm and delicious. The salad was crisp with the perfect amount of dressing. The nigiri was tender and so buttery that it practically melted on contact! The rolls were so good, we actually appreciated the fact that our platter came with them! The platter itself was the perfect portion for the two of us. We felt full and completely satisfied. I've been going here since they pretty much changed owners. Almost everytime I go I get the Washington roll it's the BEST. Spicy salmon with lemon on top....no other places compir to it. Their chuck Norris is really good too. The miso soup isn't too salty like alot of Japanese places are. The servers always are friendly and always remember me and my family and even took time to remember my kid's names. They have anllwaya been welcoming and the food is never disappointing. One time I had a to go and didn't like what I ordered. I told them I didn't cate for it and they fixed it the next time I was in. As soon as we sat down, they started bringing us free stuff before we even started ordering. first edamame, then miso soup, then salad. pretty standard stuff.. then korean pancakes, and a fried salmon head, which i was not expecting. after the meal, they gave us free ice cream, AND free cake. i think they gave us cake because it was mothers day. this is one of those japanese places owned by koreans, so there are some crossover between the two cuisines. besides the korean pancakes, they also have "Hye dup bap", which is kinda like bi bim bap, except instead of beef, it has spicy raw fish. remember to save room for the fried ice cream. it's a little different than most other places. the batter is much thicker and sweet, very cake like. read more
