Friday night dinner date was an enjoyable experience at Kakuna Sushi. My son and I enjoyed the sashimi moriawase, salmon skin hisomaki and ahi toro sushi. I also ordered one nigiri uni sushi from Sta Barbara that was delicate and sweet! We also ordered miso soup, and hot sake' that co planted our meal we'll. Sashimi is fresh and the portion size was more than expected to enjoy every bite! We were attended to periodically to refill our lemon water and I can't wait to return! Had the pleasure of eating here for a late lunch on a Friday afternoon around 5 pm! In the heart of downtown San Leandro, Kakuna is there with its multiple locations across the Bay. This location has the biggest interior so far. We were sat immediately since there wasn't a dinner rush yet. My friends and I shared some appetizers and all got our own items. I got the Cap'n Crunch was refreshing to eat, not too heavy either. Their Japanese Nachos were so good! They used wonton wrappers as chips and have fish and some sauced veggies as your dip. This is my togo sushi spot and they don't disappoint. I have also eaten at other Kakuna chain restaurants and for sure pleased that they have one nearby my house. Great selections and you can't go wrong with ordering any rolls! I have yet to dine in the restaurant but they are packed everytime I went to pick up my order. The sizes are pretty large and i think 1.5 rolls per person is good. they have a heavy emphasis on spicy tuna & crab & salmon in their rolls so most of them were the same/ similar tasting. the mukbang roll was good (very thick) but there was a pile of fish (poke looking thing) and that was not good at all. Stopped by on a Saturday afternoon and it was pretty empty. Got seated immediately, and I like how the table for 2 seater is spacious. We ordered a boujee roll and hot mess roll. Both are fried rolls. In addition, we also ordered a black garlic ramen. The rolls were mediocre (& pretty huge) and we agreed we wouldn't order boujee roll again. It's unique but the taste wasn't special to us. However, the ramen was sooo large and perfect to share between 2-4 people! We were impressed with the size and amount, because they did not cheap out on the ingredients. Please try their ramen. My husband and I was on a hunt to try out some hot and new restaurants in the area and after a search on Yelp, this spot caught our attention so we decided to visit last weekend evening. After dinner, we both agreed that this spot has potential and hopefully, this will be a permanent spot for the restaurant. Parking: located in the back of the restaurant as the front is facing the Main Street in San Leandro downtown. There are not a lot of spots and it's shared among other restaurants on the street. Ambiance: this spot used to be Hong Kong chef then dough zone and finally Kakuna sushi. The layout is the same as before with minimal changes to its decor. It's very open and spacious. Overall, a good spot to enjoy dinner with friends and family. Service: average. It's still in its early stages and it seems like the wait staff are all very young (like high school students or family helping out). When it gets busy, it does take a while to flag someone down for service. Ordering to food arrival time was short given how busy it was that evening. Food: below average. They are running a promotion where it's buy 3 rolls get 1 roll free. Portion size is huge and cost is very affordable but quality is lacking. We ordered 4 rolls: high roller roll, OMG roll, bubble roll and crunchy mango roll along with mix tempura for appetizer. Anything that was deep-fried had way too much breading. The tempura sauce was very bland, it tasted like water. With the exception of the crunchy mango roll, the other rolls had way too much rice compared to the meat/ingredient ratio. The fish tasted ok, not the most freshest but passable. I would not recommend the bubble or OMG roll, the deep-fried scallop and langoustine tails were placed on top of the sushi instead of inside so there's a lot of disconnect with these rolls. I hope they work on their rolls because the prices are very reasonable for this spot. read more

This Kakuna Sushi is located in the downtown San Leandro area. Parking is in the back lot, so you would have to go around. Not much service, I ordered to go on the phone ahead of time and there was a short wait after arriving. I ordered the California Hand Roll, Salmon Maki, and Salmon Nigiri (1 piece). Not that pricey for what I was getting either - about $17. Once I tasted the sushi, I understood why it was not that expensive - the quality of the salmon was not the best, but it was not the worst either, it was just decent. I honestly would not mind paying a bit more for more better quality tasting salmon. Their California Hand Roll was decently tasty though. read more

Got the hokkaido, splash brothers, gaijin and and hamachi raw rolls, and the kamikaze and ragin cajun baked rolls. Also added a saba and salmon sashimi appetizer. Everything was amazing! Presentation of the rolls were so beautiful. They had some fried garlic on some of the rolls which added a very nice flavor and texture contrast. The inside decor and setting was kept pretty much the same as the previous restaurant which is a good thing as it's quite open and clean. They had tables that could be connected, so 12 people can sit comfortably. There is parking located behind the restaurant. Until the end of July they have a promotion when you order three rolls you get one free. The rolls are all very substantial and loaded with fresh thick cuts of fish. The rolls were all tasty even without soy sauce. A couple for my favorites so far are the citrus and dynamite. We did get tempura udon and salmon teriyaki too, they were ok to me. But the kids loved it. We really enjoyed trying a variety of different rolls. Five stars on them, I will definitely be returning to try some of the other rolls on the menu. read more

Affordable and creative rolls infusing flavors from different countries. Gaijin roll was good with big portions of 3 fish. There's a house sauce that comes with it (came on the side) that's tangy, gingery, a little kick. Gilroy garlic was flavorful with the garlic chips and whatever "cajun" sauce was on it. Mango chili with honey and tajin was great, not overly sweet, having both mango and honey. Fish quality for the sashimi deluxe set was good but I thought there would be more variety. They gave 4 types of fish twice with what seemed like 1 scallop cut in half. Scallop texture and taste was off, not bad but likely frozen and thawed. Wouldn't order this again. I had a lovely dinner at Kakuna's newest location in San Leandro. For their grand opening, they were offering an incredible deal June 14-28: buy 2 get 1 free on all sushi rolls, dine-in or takeout. I saw this deal and decided to give them a try since we were passing through San Leandro. We dropped by Sunday around 5 pm and it was pretty empty as it was still early. It's a large space, much larger than it looks from the outside. The decor was modern and simple. The menu is quite possibly the widest menu I've ever seen. While Kakuna mostly specializes in sushi, they also offer appetizers, bento, and ramen/noodle dishes. For the sushi rolls, I appreciate that they separate them into raw, non-raw, baked, and even vegetarian. It was very overwhelming to peruse the sushi selection since there are so many options, but breaking it down into different types helped. We ended up ordering: Gaijin roll ($14.99): yellowtail, tuna, and avocado on the inside, torched salmon and garlic chips on the outside Hokkaido roll ($14.99): salmon and avocado on the inside, spicy scallop, tokibo, and green onion on the outside Vegetarian mango roll ($14.99): asparagus, cream cheese, and avocado on the inside, mango, jalapeno, honey, tajin, and mixed nuts on the outside I primarily ate the Gaijin and Hokkaido rolls, both of which were fantastic. I was impressed by how much fish they managed to stuff inside; these were some big rolls! For the Hokkaido roll, they definitely don't skimp on the spicy scallop etiher! I somehow managed to finished both rolls but was absolutely stuffed afterwards. My friend thought the Vegetarian mango roll was okay, but he discovered he doesn't really like cream cheese in rolls, so I think he ordered the wrong item. I hope this place will last, this is probably the 5th or 6th different Asian restaurant that operated out of this spot in the last 2 years. Called in an order to go, took 25 minutes with 2 sushi chef behind the sushi bar making sushi, and one table with 3 people the looks like they just finished. During their Grand Opening they have a 2 for 1 special on the rolls. Here's what I ordered togo: The spicy garlic edamame tasted like regular ones. Seems like they boiled them and just sprinkle some garlic powder and spicy something and toss it. (2) Cherry Blossom, which had salmon and avocados inside and tuna with tobiko on the outside. Orange Blossom with both salmon inside and out. The rolls were good but nothing special. Sashimi Moriawase, came with 15 pieces of assorted sashimi. The salmon was a little hard and the rest of the sashimi didn't taste good had NO flavor. I would not get this again. read more

Came on a Friday, right when they opened. Did all you can eat option. Sushi is cut too thickly, drenched in sauces that are too sweet. Food took about 30 mins to come out. Only did one round since I could tell the fish and oysters weren't as fresh as they could be. They do charge $1.5 for every PIECE left behind. Sushi or rice, it doesn't matter.
