We came in on a Monday at 6:30 so it was not too busy and we were seated quickly. Everyone was very nice. Our server came by a few minutes after we were seated to take our drink order. We ordered the margarita flight since we had never been there. I want to try a few different margaritas. They were very good. My favorite was the cucumber jalapeño. I had the soup and a salmon taco. My son had a burrito and his girlfriend had enchiladas. My husband had a taco. There are daily drink specials which we would like to try out. We ordered a guacamole for starters which was served with chips and we also enjoyed that! I especially like the queso fresco bits in there! Now the entrees were not so good. We ordered the Molcajete and let's just say it was a big let down and would not order it again. The chicken was burnt and shrimp was tasteless. The steak was the only part that was ok. I ordered a taco a la carte just to try out the carne asada. It was not good! It was very plain with no guac and slivers of raw onion. Taco Tuesday was a deal, but the service was horrible. Waitress was nowhere to be found after she brought our drinks. She was not friendly. We asked two other staff people for our check because it was 3:15 and we got there at 1:30. After giving her my credit card, she charged me $35 for a $20 tab. I had to go find her to get it refunded. It did not seem like an honest mistake either, because it was not crowded. No apologies. My friend and I will pick another place for lunch from now on. I asked so many questions ahead of time and nothing went right. When food was delivered I was going to be up charged for asking for cheese. I came here with a party of 6 for a friend's birthday on a Sunday at 12pm and were seated immediately. Service was very slow & we had to ask for chips and salsa after about 20 minutes of sitting there. When our food came out, everyone received their food except for the birthday girl. When the waiter finally came around, we told him about the missing meal and it came out as the rest of us were pretty much done eating. We asked the him about comping the meal since & his manager did do that, which was proper and appreciated. I had the asada and pollo tacos and they were yummy, as was the rice. My wife and I ordered a couple of cocktails after lunch today and I watched the bartender grab a yellow towel and scrub the outside of my wife's cocktail. I thought to myself how impressive that she wanted to make sure there was nothing on the glass that already had the cocktail in it she had made. I took the drink to my wife, thinking nothing more of it. After my wife had drank about an inch of the drink she noticed a black layer of who knows what on the INSIDE of the glass. It suddenly came to me that I watched the bartender try and remove the black ring around the INSIDE of the glass! Evidently, rather than pour another drink the bartender served it! She knew there was something not right on the inside when she attempted to clean it from the outside of the cocktail glass! Who would do something like this? The bartender at Kalaveras, Temecula that's who! Maybe check your plates, glasses, silverware, etc., before consuming here. The place was sort of empty when we showed up at noon. We had a booth to sit in and it was comfortable. Our server brought us chips and salsa when we asked for it - they don't just bring it out. I started with the chamoyada margarita and it was delicious and pretty strong in my opinion. The Marg flight was also a hit at our table. Rag got the chilaquiles and those were yummy. I had the breakfast eggs with potatoes and these were average, under seasoned but okay. The Kala bowl was good and the Barbacoa tacos were delish. Good Mexican food/sports bar. But the lady manager in the afternoon has Hispanic soap operas on. So I walk in there like I have before and ask her to change it to some kind of sports. So what does she do? She puts on Love Song Hispanic videos. That might be great if it was a bunch of girls, but no one's in the place. it's just a couple of guys. And then she disappears after you have the request for some sports. You can't even find her. She obviously doesn't care about her patrons. It's a good thing. The tacos are decent. As a manager, she sucks and doesn't know that by pissing off the patrons it means less business. If this manager would just put Sports on in the afternoon during taco Tuesday, she'd have a lot more business. Matter of fact, I would invite my friends to come down and hang with me there as it does have decent tacos, but no, not when I get this kind of crap. This place is a hidden little gem. The ambiance and vibe are so fun! Generally anywhere we go in old town is packed and there's almost always a wait. I was shocked when we walked right in and we're seated at lunch time on a Saturday. I had the chicken enchiladas and a michelada. These were not your basic enchiladas you would normally see at a restaurant. The tortillas had a delicious homemade texture and flavor, the sauce was creamy with a bit of a kick. I didn't catch her name but she has black hair and fake blue contacts. I have NEVER heard of a bartender NOT serving water. My party asked for water and she said "you can't get that here" and never gave us a reason. When we made a big deal she said we can ask a server for water??? A server even came by and thankfully got us water but also said "I don't even know why she said that" All in all, I would not recommend this location to my worst enemy. My girlfriend and I went to the old town Temecula spot this last weekend. She had the taco combo plate with Chicharron and salmon taco. I had the Quesa Birra Taco plate. The chicharron and queso birra was so delicious! The salmon taco was ehh. We also ordered the chips and salsa. Salsa was tasty and had a roasted type flavor. Just no heat to it. Better with some heat in my opinion. Now on to the chips. If you're going to do something right, the chip's definitely need to be one of these things. Was very disappointed with the chips. Also beans and rice gotta be on point. They weren't excellent but to me still good. Now to the drinks. GF ordered the mojito prieto and I had the Pepinos con Chili margarita. Mojito was ok, nothing great. But the Pepinos was so so good! Refreshing and really tasty. Overall we had a great experience.
