A bit delayed, but Went on June 13th! It was a great spot with pretty good service! My only minor thing was there is no "mise en place." I had my food come out before the utensils, which was just chopsticks and napkins. My server Lincoln was really nice and knew his menu relatively well! I had a great time and worth my 2 hour bus ride to come here! I have been meaning to try this since I heard about their great happy hour! However, of course, I never made it to happy hour! The Waikikirita was nice and smooth, with just the right amount of sweet and sour, tanginess, you only get from li hing! Of course a distinct flavor, but for a local, I definitely enjoyed it served in a martini glass! The gyozas seemed to be panfried was perfect with the green onions loaded on, but I don't feel like I got much of the ponzu as I was hoping for with it being in the name! The star of the show was this creamy, almost buttery-like, i can still remember it to this day. Personally, it was a touch too thick for me, almost resembled like a chowder and was hoping it was going to be more brothy. It was a bit rich, but overall enjoyed it. And somehow, the garlic bread made so much sense! I liked the atmosphere and the vibes! When i walked in, it didn't seem as "welcoming" from the start as there was no one up front and instead see a lady, who seemed to be a worker off the clock be sat at the bar talking to the bartender. Almost not giving me much attention. Eventually, they let me pick a place to sit and served me "properly." But at first impression, I wasn't so happy, yet, I am glad I stuck around because the food was pretty good and the drink i had was nice! However, don't expect a host or anything. The ramen was very good. It has good flavor, although it is a bit pricy when compared to other locations in the area. I have no problem paying for good food, so I would still recommend this place. The service was friendly and not overbearing. The restaurant is nice. It has a great feel, is clean and they have a projection tv on one wall that was showing the Waikiki news. This place was sort of a mixed bag for the family. I was looking for a ramen place on Yelp and this place came up. It was close by and had good reviews. But personally, I do not like all of the upcharges here. They want a tip for the waitstaff that you add, but a separate tip for the kitchen that they add, plus a fee for the credit card, that is three separate extra charges, just roll some of that into the pricing so that people know what to expect when they dine here, then just offer a discount for cash only and deduct it from those people. They also had upcharges for sauces and green onions which is ridiculous. What restaurant charges extra for dipping sauce for a dish that typically comes with a dipping sauce, never in my life has that happened and that makes additional extra charges. We came during happy hour, which was great so I ordered a bunch of food to try. I had a couple drinks, the mai tai and a blue Hawaiian type drink. They were good and a good price. We had the happy hour fries, they were nothing special. Some other Japanese places near us had some amazing tempura fries, but these were rather plain. The cucumber salad was delightful and I really enjoyed the tempura shrimp sushi. For dinner one child ordered the gyoza and they were out of the vegan so she had to get the pork. They were very tasty but the waiter offered the ponzu sauce and green onions but did not indicate there was an upcharge. I did ask him about it and he said it was on the menu, but my child was not going to see that and also, I have never in my life had an upcharge for a typical sauce that comes with a dumpling. I had the Tam Tam noodles. Those were amazing, so saucy and a nice amount of spice. I would come back for those, that is a very typical kind of dish I would look for or make at home for myself. The other two ramen were a char sui chicken and a spam, but the broth on those were practically flavorless and super watery making them a very expensive mild soup that lacked flavor. It is a cute place with nice music (although super loud, louder than normal) in a really good spot, but I do not think overall the family would come back. At home, we have a plethora for noodle places for less with better flavor and I bet Waikiki does as well. read more

Hello, I wanted to share some feedback about our random visit to the outside bar at Kamukura in Waikiki. Unfortunately, our experience left us disappointed. When we stopped by to order two margaritas, we wanted to order an extra shot of tequila, the bartender promptly mentioned there would be an extra fee, which was fine with us. Before she left, I complimented her on her eyes, and she thanked me quietly. When she brought our drinks back, without the extra shot, my sister commented on how good the margaritas were, and the bartender replied, "I know they're good because I made them." After that, she didn't interact with us again. We couldn't help but notice how she was much more engaged and friendly with other patrons, while she seemed to avoid interacting with us. I didn't catch her name, as she didn't return to check on us, but she was a slender white female with hazel eyes and dark brown hair and she wore eyeglasses. It felt as though she had little interest in making us feel welcome, which was disappointing. For context, my sister and I are black, and this difference in treatment made us feel unwelcome, which was disheartening. We understand that everyone can have off days, but we hope sharing our experience will help improve future interactions and ensure all visitors feel valued. We were walking by and saw a sign they had out front about their happy hour so we decided to pop in and check it out. The place was super empty except one table dining and us at the bar. Seemed odd for happy hour time. Our bartender was attentive and nice and helpful with suggestions. We decided to grab a few appetizers and a cocktail. We got the edamame that soaked in their signature ramen sauce, the char siu plate and the ume cucumber pickled salad. Everything was good. Wonderful service from the time you walk in the door. Came in and plenty of seats for a large party and community tables for those that like bar seating but not at the bar. The Oishi Ramen is their special and a popular dish. The broth is flavorful and not greasy from the pork. The pork is a little dry, but still very good and the cabbage is crunchy. Ordered the topping of egg and it was served whole. Breaking into it with a squeeze of my chopsticks and it split open with yoke running out. Added chili oil and paste to add additional heat but could have eaten without. Little salty when you finish the dish, good thing they constantly fill your water. There are fees that are added to the receipt, 3% CC & 3% Kitchen (up to 6% total). Understand when you are calculating your tip. Overall I would highly recommend this place for your next ramen. I came across Kamukura while walking around Waikiki and wow -- what an amazing find! With origins from Osaka, Japan back in the '80s, you can tell they've perfected their craft. They know what they're doing. I ordered their Signature Oishi Ramen, and it was perfection. The broth is a bit light but both delicious and tasty. The noodles have that perfect ramen texture, the pork melts in your mouth, and the cabbage adds a nice crunch that makes the whole bowl feel balanced. I had mine made with corn. The vibe inside is clean, modern, and welcoming. It's actually VERY nice inside. Cool bar concept with a massive island table area too. The staff were super friendly. It's a cozy restaurant located in Lilia Waikiki. Went there for the happy hour (2-6pm). I had Mai Tai and Cabernet Sauvignon for drinks, Char Siu Plate, Gyoza, and French Fries for food. I drink Mai Tai at any restaurant for a fun comparison, and I didn't care for the Mai Tai here much. It was too sweet and lacked tanginess. The wine was okay. The food was pretty good. I liked the char siu a lot - thick and tasty. The gyoza was big with a lot of stuffing and delicious. I wish it was a bit more crispy. The fries were decent, too. Parking was a crapshoot. We first tried parking in the recommended garage but there were no spaces left. We ended up parking across the street at the International Market garage. We arrived just before our 6pm reservation time and were seated quickly. We were able to take advantage of some of the happy hour rolls: shrimp tempura, dragon, and California. This restaurant is located just 2 blocks from Waikiki Beach! With a quiet ambiance on the corner of Walina St and Kuhio. This is their flagship restaurant straight from Japan. The Director of Operations is Mioko and she is truly one hard working savvy business woman. Her attention to detail is impressive. I reached out to her to request a special dining experience for my employees and provided her with a budget. She was able to work with the chef who curated a menu just for us. When we arrived, there was a special seating space ready for us. A menu with our company name listing a five course meal. Every dish was served with the freshest ingredients, serves timely, and effortlessly. The flavors were delightful. The appetizer assortment consisted of Oishi Edamame served cold but flavorful. Pork and chives gyoza was pan fried to perfection where the skin was thin but the bottom had a little crisp to it and with the dipping sauce, it was delicious and kept me wanting more. The fried chicken karaage was light and fresh, and the thick cut Aburi char siu pork was a generous portion and rich in flavor. Next was the sushi, fresh high quality fish for the Nigiri and excellent quality wasabi and ginger. The main course a Wagyu Beef Patty with a gravy that made me want to lick my plate clean! The Patty was so moist with a buttery texture. As we were all already feeling full and satisfied, they bring out the next course. Their signature Oishi Ramen has a French inspired soup base that is full of umami flavor. I ended up consuming all of the soup. The ramen noodles were thin and Al dente, and the braised pork belly made the dish decadent. And to end the meal, I had a mango lilikoi sorbet. What a delightful experience. Kamukura? In Hawaii?! Pretty much my first thought when I saw the Kamakura, but not like it's surprising to see another Japanese chain in Waikiki. A well known chain of its own in Japan, Kamakura Surf + Dine takes what is a more casual chain dining experience in Japan, and turned it into a bit more of an upscale (at least the look the of place) approach to their shop. The menu is interesting as they have some specific Hawaiian versions of their ramen menu items they don't have for their standard Japan menu. Price wise, may seem a bit on the pricier side compared to other ramen places in the area (and there's a lot of them in Waikiki), but the portions here are actually quite decent and not just noodles but also the ingredients too, so makes up for the price somewhat. We ordered a few things here, but I'll just focus on my specific bowl of ramen. I got the Aburi Char Siu ramen bowl. It is basically a grilled pork belly in thicker slices, and there were also bean sprouts and cabbage that were in the soup which added texture and flavor. The ramen here was also made just right, and nice and QQ texture for those of us who like our ramen to have a bit of chewiness, but not toughness, to their noodles. Overall, at first glance, especially for those of us who are familiar with Kamukura in Japan, this definitely feels weird and different at first approach. However, after getting over the aesthetics of the decor, it's basically just Kamukura, but service certainly isn't normally like this in the more casual dining version. read more

Came in for an early dinner and here's how it goes... Food: OISHI RAMEN - it is so tasty, so oishi! Broth is so rich in flavor and is seasoned really well. So much happiness in this bowl. I love it and would love to order this again if happened to be back craving for another ramen bowl. The noodles are perfectly cooked and the amount of napa cabbage is so generous. And they put a pretty good amount of thinly sliced pork on it. SOFT SHELL CRAB TEMPURA - whatever happens, if you dine here DO NOT FORGET TO ORDER THIS ONE. It is so ONOLICIOUS. Perfectly cooked and perfectly seasoned! CHICKEN KARAAGE - so good and seasoned well. Cooked perfectly, with a nice crunch from the outside and soft, juicy from the inside. I will definitely order this again. KAMUKURA LEMONADE BLENDED - t'was okay, nothing special yet it is still refreshing. I will move on to another mocktails. Overall the experience was pretty awesome. We were greeted upon entering and were immediately seated. Nana, the server was great and she makes sure I was taken care of while dining. The ambiance was pretty great. It was neat and clean as it was relatively new dining area in the heart of Waikiki. Their seats were comfortable and love the simplicity yet elegant look from the inside. Irene and I met for Happy Hour because some menu items are $4 while others are $8. For example, we got the Wafu French Fries and 1/2 California Roll Sushi for $4 each. The Chicken Karaage and Kamukura Gyoza were $8 each. We each also got a Signature Oishi Ramen for $8. The ramen and gyoza were tasty, and the chicken karaage had a nice crispness on the outside. I went with friends to try their $4 happy hour specials. I had a $4 beer and a $4 mini pineapple martini. We shared a $4 cucumber salad, a $12 Philly roll, and the $12 poke tacos (2). My friends also tried the happy hour sake flight, gyoza, and half ramen. Here, they served me the same oishi ramen with very little cabbage, and pork slices that were 95% fat and super greasy. It came with fried chicken karaage for $18. First off, loved the "sophisticated surf" ambiance--very light, open, cool, and modern. Also loved the service (hats off to our server Leon). The food was good, but I think they still need to hone some of the recipes. Case in point: they had big, juicy pork ribs with a Kona coffee glaze. Sounds good, right? But unfortunately, the only flavor that comes through is unsweetened coffee. It needed something else, perhaps a bit of sweetness, or sesame, or spiciness.
