There's something about going to an Asian establishment and receiving good service; I guest it's unexpected and such a contrast effect from all the other ones you've been in, but this place, even thought it's small, gives good vibes and it's quite cozy. The staff members are responsive to your requests and they all seem to have good relationships among themselves. Very refreshing to see. It's clean. The food selection is huge. The gf had the pig blood porridge and I had the chow fun. Gf ended up stealing some of my chow fun because it was that good. They use the big fat noodles but the fried them lightly on the outside, to create that searing effect; so it's crunchy on the outside but soft and very flavorful on the inside. As far as egg tarts, there were only a few on the counter and didn't look super good to me, so I didn't get any. I normally have an innate aversion to ordering abalone that I didn't see alive in a tank upon walking into a restaurant, but Kang Lac boldly listed abalone chao as the very first option on the chao side of the menu, so I thought, what the hell. I did not regret this decision: their abalone was delicious and not too chewy. (So was the shrimp, incidentally - I wonder if they have the same supplier as the dim sum place next door, because both places have incredible shrimp.) There was nowhere near enough seafood, however, and the porridge part wasn't tasty enough to make up for it. HOWEVER, they do have the best Chinese donuts I've ever had. Ever. This is the spot if you're looking for Congee (Chao)! It's seriously perfect for when you're sick or just had a long night of drinking and want something easy to eat. They give you a good amount of soup and also comes with plenty of bean sprouts and veggies! There's also an option to add century egg (preserved egg) or get a side of Chinese donuts (giò cháo quy) which not many places carry. They have a wide selection of pastry and dessert if you're ever craving sweets! They make their pastry throughout the day so its always fresh.Their che is actually pretty good too! Yes, this could be because of the language barrier but one would think if a particular server doesn't know much English he would go get someone else who does. NOT THE CASE. So I had come onto Yelp and read specifically what items were recommended so that I did not stumble once I was in the restaurant... I get there explain what items I wanted the server looks at me like he has ABSOLUTELY no idea what I am talking about =/ *then I wonder if perhaps the menu had been changed - but the review that I had read was recent* so he seems to be confused about the type of Shrimp Roll (he kept saying fried) and the shredded Beef dish finally we got it together. Where can I get a piping hot bowl of congee (rice soup/rice porridge) on a gloomy day or when I'm not feeling well enough to cook? Here I say. They specialize in making congee with all the fixin's you can want. If you want it with chicken, fish, or even intestines with pork blood they will have it . What's great about them is that they make their own fried bread sticks for you to eat with the congee. Note that the freshest batches are in the morning so if you come later in the day you may get stuck with a "not so fresh" stick.... no pun intended. For folks who like to have salty soy milk with their meal, they also have that for you here as well. Especially yummy is their daikon rice cakes that are fried with eggs and served with a yummy soy/vinegar dipping sauce. This savory treat can be recreated at home as they sell their rice cakes in huge blocks along with their dipping sauce for about $6. If you fancy egg noodles they can whip that up for you in no time. A bit heavy on the MSG with this one, but still tasty. Since this is a bakery after all, you can polish your meal off with one of their various yummy drinks or with a baked good. My choice of drink here is usually the pennyworth mung bean shake, great for a hot summer day. Their sam bo luong (dried fruit and seaweed soup) very tasty here for you che lovers. For the less adventurous they also have other fruit shakes that are aimed to please. This place has been here for as long as I can remeber and is a local favorite in the community. They recently did some rennovations to the place with a new coat of paint (omg, an asian hole-in-the-wall with an accent wall!) and some furnishings so it's a bit more pleasant now. Just skimmed through the reviews for this place and the verdict stands: Great for regular customers and Not Great for new customers who don't speak the language or understand the food. Okay Okay...let's break it down. My favorite bakery in town in terms of Chinese bakery products, but definitely not for cakes (I got elsewhere for my delicious cakes). For those are are not familiar with the Vietnamese dish, chao. Keep reading and try it! Recommend this Restaurant for Vietnamese rice porridge (chao). A bowl cost about $3-5. I like to add the soy sauce, a lot of chili and a lot of lemon. Ask for cooked bean sprouts and add this into the porridge as well. You have to get the "Chinese donut" with it, I think it is spelled cha quay. Dip this in your chao... yum. We also tried the seafood egg noodles as well. I love their broth. Super tasty. Every time I come home from UCLA to visit my mom, she always forces me to take her to the dreaded "asian supermarkets". She got the chao which I thought was pretty good, but not worth coming here for since we can make a pretty similar version back at home for much less moneys. But what I did find especially delicious was the com chien bo luc lac. (shaken beef with fried rice). What the hell is "shaken beef" you ask? To be honest, I really don't know what it's seasoned with, but at other restaurants it's just mediocre at best. Here, however, they use filet mignon and pan fry it in butter with other seasonings so the beef comes out super super tender and super super tasty. ohhh man. it was quite possibly the best bo luc lac ive ever had. Also, the fried rice was simple; not too oily, but full of flavor. The rice+butter sauce from the bo luc lac, oh em gee. i nearly creamed my pants. Anyway, I highly recommend this place for their com chien bo luc lac. The best rice porridge I've had in Orange County! Nice and thick texture which is what I like when it comes to rice porridge. My chicken jook had a really generous amount of chicken in it. I even used the bean sprouts in mine which is a new experience. The Cantonese version doesn't come with bean sprouts. I didn't use the lime wedges though. The bean sprouts gave it a nice contrasting crunch. Radish cake was very good! I polished this entire dish off almost on my own. My wife had a couple of bites, but I did most of the damage. My mom first introduced me to this place because she knew I love Che Ba Mau(three colored bean dessert) and now this has become THE place for my Che Ba Mau fix. They depart from the orthodox traditional Che Ba Mau by adding a bunch of other things such as tapioca. The serving size is enormous for the price and most importantly, the quality is as good as it gets. The beans aren't too sweet, but most importantly, they still maintain their texture without being super bland. The coconut milk is also flavorful without tasting like pure sugar. Won't go back to Kang Lac. This is my first review, and I hate to start with something negative, but here goes. I read other reviews of Kang Lac and couldn't believe that people have good things to say about this place. Sally (my friend) called ahead to the restaurant to see if they had a specific kind of pork bun. They said they did. GREAT! That's what we were craving, that's what they got, let's go! We get to Kang Lac and try to order the pork bun's they said they had on the phone, and was the deciding factor and only reason we went there, and they didn't have them. Strike 1! Sally tried to order spring rolls and they tell her they only have fried rolls. Disappointed, we order that instead. Trying to order, I generally found the "waiter" to be completely unhelpful. I even caught him leaning up against the wall staring out the window ignoring Sally, as she tried to decipher the menu and ask questions so we could order. "Thanks' for the help buddy!" That cements it, I'm officially irritated. Strike 2! The pork buns came rapped in "Saran Wrap", as did the spring rolls they said they didn't have. I've had pork buns and spring rolls many times, at a number of different establishments, so I know it's not customary. Pre-made and rapped in plastic is how someone would expect food to come out of a machine or at an Am Pm convenience store, not a sit down restaurant. When I go to a restaurant I don't expect the food to come out of the glass case of pre-prepared food at the register. Which ours did, I watched him do it. The "Fillet Mignon" we ordered with fried-rice was terrible! The rice was bland, bland, bland, and the "Fillet" tasted like fat. Strike 3! This is the only place in OC i will eat chao (the rice porridge/congee?). it's a family owned place i believe, and they sell baked goodies as well as food and boba drinks! whenever i come here, i usually get the "bot chien" dish..i believe that's fried rice cakes with eggs and green onions on it. it's different from the "radish" cakes, it's rice, it is a bit plain, but dipped in the soy sauce (it's some kind of special sauce, not regular soy sauce i believe). i ask for mine to be made extra crispy. yum! my mom usually gets the com chien bo luc lac (fried rice with shaken beef), or the chao huyet (porridge with pork blood cubes). the fried rice is freaken good, soft cubes of beef, nicely seasoned rice...i'm not a fan of pork blood, but the porridge itself is SO GOOD! i usually order a plate of dao chao quay (the chinese fried bread stick things), mooch off my mom and dip it in her broth..it's the best thing ever in cold weather or if you're sick! also superb for hangovers! hehe also, i love their regular milk tea (tra sua), it tastes different from others i have tried..not sure how to explain it, but it has more of a tea taste than a chocolate milk taste, which i've been more accustomed to. the prices are decent for the amount you get, in my opinion..i usually have leftovers. no dish will cost you over $10. the service is decent, typical asian..since my mom knows them, they're usually very nice to us. before we leave, i end the meal with a yummy, flaky egg tart, and buy a few banh bao xa xiu (steamed bbq pork bun) for later....my mom likes to go next door and buy a box of heo quay (roast pig) for later too. read more

IMO, that's weird, but they pull it off pretty well actually. Honeybear and I had breakfast here. We ordered 2 jook - 1000 yr old egg & pork, 1 chinese fried donut, 1 order of daikon cakes w/ scrambled eggs, 1 fresh orange juice, 1 honey green tea. The lady who took our order spoke Mandarin! That's surprising! Everyone's so friendly :-) Everything's really good. There was finely shredded ginger on top of the jook, and they give you bean sprouts and lemons. I'm used to the Cantonese and Taiwanese style, but the bean sprouts go into the jook, and I squeezed the lemons into the honey green tea. Yum Yum says my temple of 5 organs ... They have very good food here at very receanable prices. My one concern is their hygiene practices. On a recent visit there, I saw one of the workers wore the same pair of gloves to prepare food and then handle cash from a customer. Not sure if they understand how dirty cash can be. I would occasionally order a pastry, too, if I was waiting long enough for the coffee. But, after reading the reviews, I decided to give the food a try. Love the pork buns here! They are Cantonese style with more BBQ pork vs Vietnamese that is more common around here. While this is not a Dim Sum restaurant they do have some of my favorite Dim Sum type sweet & savory buns. The staff on the weekends speaks English which is also helpful when I want to try new things. Been eating here since I was 9, and I am still eating here 10 years later. This is usually the place I go if I do not know what to eat. I have tried their Pho ap chao, Mi/hieu tu, chao, bun, and banh; really, this is a good restaurant. Their speciality drinks aren't that amazing, but still refreshing after eating a bowl of hot noodles. My only complaint is the Asian lady. She looks like she does not want to be here and would mess up on my orders. How the ef do you mess up someone's order who has been coming here for more than 10 years? Though nothing beats a freshly deep-fried curry pan from Curry House. Mmmmmm. I think my mom is buddy buddy with these folks. Unfortunately, not enough to call them homies because they don't know who I am when I go sans Mother and definitely no free fried dough sticks. As for the other baked goods: Sponge cake: Y'know, the kind with the scalloped edges. Lemon flavored, methinks. We used to eat these just for the top section with the thin brown film layer, just like a muffin top. My mom thought the fact that we ate these every time she bought them meant she should buy them every single day for us. And because they were sitting there on the kitchen table, making eyes at us meant we were going to pick at it until we devoured the whole thing. Ham and cheese bread-sandwich-thing: Very salty. I don't like ham much. I'm more of a turkey person. That means I like deli meat in turkey form--I assure you I'm not much of a tool or an idiot. Really. :( :( :( Fried dough sticks: Uh, I don't remember, but I find the notion of screwing these things up to be damn near impossible. Flour, water, oil. How do you eff these up? Please share. Oh right, forgetting the baking powder perhaps. The turkey in me has spoken loud and clear. Fried sesame bread: Obviously I don't know the the actual names of these items (Chinese, Vietnamese, nor their English equivalents), but I have a knack for naming things, no? We hated these growing up (that is, Cindybear and I). Which meant we would eat them like we did the sponge cakes. Did I mention I weigh about 400 pounds.
