Yummy food and super nice service! I've only eaten the bot chien and the chao here but def need to try out their yellow noodle bo kho!!!

Thank you Kang Lac for making chao (porridge) that my boyfriend could stomach when he was sick. Thanks for making it thick and yummy for him so he could slurp it up easily. Also, merci beaucoup for your various banana wrapped foods that I can pack to school and microwave But. Dang. Your other foods are greasaaaaaay. Couldn't stomach it as yummy as it was. I ordered the fried taro cakes (bot chien) and fried rice with filet mignon (bo luc lac). The flavoring on both were great, though the taro cakes could have used a bit more egg and toppings. But I realized, after further digestion, how incredibly oily both were, more so than your average fried foods. The fiancee and I stopped here to lunch. He had the French-style beef with fried rice. He liked it a lot. I had the wonton yellow egg noodle soup, it was tasty. The prices is a tad on the more expensive side for an Asian hole-in-the-wall place like this one (I think it was $8-$10 for a dish), but for us, the quality & quantity was good. We will return in the future. A side note: We didnt order any drinks, but they had some good boba drinks on the menu that looked very good. Something for us to try out next time. read more

I had their porridge and wonton soup. Both are very oily. As a matter of fact, the predominant taste of the porridge was sesame oil. The ingredients within taste good enough; I had bbq beef (thit xa xiu) with the wonton and fish with the porridge. I wasn't too disappointed or satisfied with the food, and definitely not compelled to come back any time soon (maybe a year down the line). Just your average hole in the wall Vietnamese eatery with the typical non-service and cash only mentality. The ordinary, passable food and bland (new) exterior designs lack any lasting imprints. read more

I remember as a kid my parents always ordered chao from here for breakfast on Sunday mornings. Unfortunately I got sick and remembered how good the chao here tasted so I had to drop by. As I arrived to pick up my order I noticed their tempting steaming hot fresh displays of banh bao and pork sung sandwich. I immediately grabbed a banh bao and pork sung sandwich to go with the thousand year old egg & pork porridge! I specifically requested not to have the egg in there, but sadly I go home to reheat the porridge and there was the nasty black egg in it :( Also they seemed to have made it more salty now or it's drenched in MSG cause I was very thirsty and had a nasty saltiness in my mouth for a while. Kang Lac is not just a bakery, they serve food. Really damn solid good food to boot. I come here for their Mi and Hu Tieu (Yellow/White noodle soup) and they hardly every disappoint. Each bowl is accompanied by a fried shrimp chip, which unless you like soggy should be removed and set aside to enjoy. I always save the best for last and that chip is a fave of mine. The broth they serve is clean and flavorful, you won't feel like you just licked a brick of salt after eating here. Their bao's both steamed and baked are excellent as well, as you can tell by the sheer volume of bao's that are sold at this place. The only downside to this place would be parking, especially on a weekend in the day. Come in the evening so you don't have to deal with the parking issue and do yourself a favor and savor a bowl of their noodles. read more

I love this place! I've only had one dish here and it's the only thing I'll ever get. I don't know Vietnamese well but it's called Bot Chien? Make sure it's the one with out meat in it. Ok, Vietnamese is not my first language so I don't know the specific name of what I ordered. You'll have to ask my friend, but I don't think she has a yelp account. I had the porridge with minced pork and thousand year egg. Yumm, that made for a filling breakfast and it came with those deep fried asian donuts as well. My friend and I shared that and some kind of noodles with chicken. I liked the noodles, but the soup tasted a bit sweet--I'm thinking too much MSG. I ordered the "rau mau"--pennyworth drink, which is one of my favorite drinks, but sometimes an acquired taste for others. I heard it has "cooling" effects for your body per the Asian hot and cold system. Good enough reason to drink it! I was offered it with green bean/mung bean. I said "no" because I wanted to be on the safe side, nor did I want to choke on beans as I sipped my drink. My daring friend decided to try it and received a green bean/pennyworth SMOOTHIE when the order arrived. It was delicious! Like green bean popsicle ice cream. I have been eating at more Vietnamese food of late since I work in Bolsa now and this place is pretty much walking distance for me. I have always noticed this place everytime Ive been in Bolsa but never thought of giving it a second look or checking it out until my coworker bought me some drinks from here. It was surprisingly very good. I got the Thai tea with the grass jelly and it was good and decently priced. Yesterday I decided to stop by here and pick up some lunch and I have been craving "bot chien" so I got that. It was very good and certainly satisfied my craving. Price was decent and they have a bunch of other yummy stuff that I cant wait to try! So if you want some yummy Vietnamese food and drinks I recommend that you stop by here. This place has been around for a long time. I remember my dad taking me here as a kid and would buy me porridge (Chao) when I was not feeling well...and it always seems to do the trick. Now I am taking my husband here and I am sure in the future will be taking my kids here too. Always long as I can remember...I've always loved the fish porridge, the special porridge with vietnamese blood sausage, etc, the chicken porridge...you name it. This is the ONLY place (in my opinion) that makes the BEST Chao ever. Love that they put tiny sliced ginger in the Chao...with a side of bean sprout and add some spicy chili paste and a slice of lime....HEAVEN! I am craving for it now just thinking about it. The staff here are always so nice and accommodating. They have a wide selection of bakery goods...which are all very good. I love the asian donut that you can order on the side for the chao....so super delicious! I love everything about this place except for the parking lot. Parking is a challenge here....like most places in Garden Grove. But this place especially! They are located in a tiny plaza with very limited parking....so its best to go during non-peak hours when the entire city of Garden Grove is not out shopping. read more

I've been going to this place for years. They are pretty consistent when it comes to the porridge and noodle soups. Everything is good including the Vietnamese iced coffee. My favorites are the fish porridge, shredded pork with thousand year old egg porridge, taro turnip fried cake with fried egg, and wonton noodle soup. The shredded pork bun is also good. Very kind service. They were understanding when I didn't know what I wanted and kept vacillating. In the end I chose the pork congee. It came out in a big bowl but the rice was way overcooked and there was too much broth. The most watery chao I've ever had. And barely any flavor or meat. I had to douse it with soy sauce and sriracha. My sister's mi quang was also bland and flavorless. The broth just didn't have any dimension. My husband's fried pho stir fry was super oily like a chinese dish. It had that gelatinous film on it. Basically, we were all very disappointed and don't understand the good reviews. Maybe we all just ordered the wrong item but unfortunately there won't be another visit to determine whether or not we did. read more

I've only ever had the porridge here and have to admit it's pretty good. They could use a little more meat, but for such low prices, who's complaining? The only thing I don't like is their cold chinese doughnuts, especially on a rainy day. They leave them out by the drafty door and they can get cold and stale. minus one star for that. read more

I'm only going to post their review regarding their ice coffee. I've been their long time customer, but compelled to post regarding this. I was going to give them "3 more chances " to see if they're going to change, but sure enough, nope. They fill it barely 3/4 of the way with ice already in it, then they shake it up to look like it's full. I don't mind paying a little more if they want to fill it to the top, but this is trying to deceive your customers. I agree that their congee and other sit in menus are good, 4 stars. I was craving Hu Tieu & Bot Chien, and only place I know that makes the best is in Houston, Tx "Chinos Fast Food." Unfortunately its to far to go there, so I yelped to see if I could get my fix here in California. Came here cause of the high reviews. Let say....this will be my first and my last time ordering from here. Order was for Take Out... I ordered Hu Tieu Seafood, broth has no flavor, very very bland & rice noodle was so over cooked it became a mush in the broth. They gave me 4 pieces of seafood (WTH). It was so tasteless, ended up in the garbage. Waste of my money. Got order of Cháo Huyet & Century Egg Pork Congee, where is the other half of the egg?? Pork Blood was rubbery.. Tasteless... No matter how much condiments I added... It was just blah! (In the garbage) I was looking forward to Bot Chien, really people? Review on yelp was a lie!! It was mushy, tasteless and egg was dry. My gf brought me here because I had to skip work yesterday due to food poisoning. When I saw the restaurant, I said "Wth? Why are you taking me to a bakery for dinner?" And she said that it's actually a regular restaurant. I ordered a chicken & rice porridge ($4.75). There's never much to say about porridge other than the fact that it was good or not. It was good in my book, although next time I will be taking out the slices of ginger sprinkled on top. For an extra dollar we got a side of Chinese soft bread that I dipped into my porridge. My lovely gf ordered fried rice with filet mignon ($7.95). Tender, juicy, and plump pieces of filet; sizzling with the marinade & fat releasing aromas so pleasant and strong, I could almost taste it. I hadn't eaten anything all day, and at that moment my stomach had formed an erection. My gf couldn't help but notice my food boner. She gently gathered some fried rice on half of her spoon, and placed a piece of filet on the other half. She then raised her spoon towards me and told me to take a bite. Just one bite. "No, I can't..." I said, sadly. My gf just kept her spoon raised and said are you sure? My mind was saying no, but my massive stomach erection kept pulsating "DO IT" with each & every passing millisecond. So I did it. Dammit. It was really, really good. The filet mignon tasted exactly what it looked like. A million bucks. I promised myself that I'd come back for this, as soon as my stomach got better. My gf said she liked her dish, but she wished that they gave her more meat. Maybe next time I come here I'll order it, and ask/pay for extra meat. Any of the porridge bowls are simply delicious and can easily make you feel just a little bit better. You can even request for more of those black eggs (I freaking love those with my porridge!) and add a bit of lemon, sriracha, and bean sprouts for more flavor. I would also recommend the wonton beef egg noodles here...soooo good and packed with flavor. On my way out I also bought some fried rice cakes near the door for $3 which are a good snack when you feel like something crunchy and sweet. I can't believe I never ate here growing up. Went here to eat with my parents and bf and I loved it!!! Best shaken beef fried rice I've ever had!!!!!!!! Service is great! The place doesn't look like much when you walk in but the food makes up for it! We had shaken beef with fried rice and an order of salty dried fish fried rice! Both really good! This is kinda a 'whole-in-the-wall' place in the heart of Little Saigon. They offer great soup noodle dishes and have a variety of yummy drinks. I always get the 'mi do bien kho', which is the seafood soup noodle, soup on the side. They also have this fried cake w/egg on the outside ("bot chien")..I'm just not sure what the name is in english. That's a side order that is a must try if you come here. using yelp and reading reviews , i wanted congee. i come to this place and quickly can tell its more viet than chinese...sigh...ok lets give it a shot. We ordered fish congee, which was very good and came with strips of ginger. Also the century egg which i think they forgot to season cuz it just was bland. I don't kno what it is called in english but its a beef fried flat rice noodle i had ordered in chinese. amazingly the server taking our order is viet but very good at understanding my broken chinese, lol. very impressed. the chinese salty doughnut is really good here...actually better than i have had in some authentic chinese restaurants. but i won't be back. it just wasn't good enough to be happy with. read more

I love their coffee!! Cafe sua da is the way to go! This is the only place that makes divine coffee. Its fast and cheap! And hey! Unlike most asian joints, this place actually fills up the coffee to the rim! And ftw crushed ice! :D excellent. Although the parking is horendous!
