The roasted butternut squash featured some pomegranate seeds and kale and was by far my favorite. The porridge was also *delightful* and a textural dream. Scrambled eggs were just right; runny egg was really unique and good though not totally my style. My friend loved the trout salad-- not totally my jam, but not bad. Potato bread was ok-- the rye looked more interesting once I saw it. Bacon was fine though underwhelming. Hummus was delicious. Scandinavian food isn't something that's common in the Bay Area, and Kantine serves up a nice representation of simple, clean Scandinavian cooking. The brightly lit cafe is modern with a short and sweet menu. For brunch on the weekend, the restaurant was rather crowded and the wait for the food was up to 30 minutes! We started with the savory porridge, which was a mixture of quinoa, rice, rye, and other grains, along with several types of mushrooms, kale, and homemade farmer's cheese, along with a runny egg on top. Though this sounds like an umami bomb, the porridge was a lacking in flavor and was underseasoned. We also had the brunch board, which came with a selection of seven little dishes of food, so you can sample a bunch of offerings. The sprouted, seeded rye bread was dense (but not overly so), and made for a nice platform for some of the dips. I was a fan of the 3-lentil hummus, which was much thicker and grainier than traditional hummus, and had plenty of good flavor. The Scandinavian meatballs were delicious as well, and the bay shrimp were some of the most tender little shrimps I've eaten. The overnight skyr porridge was made with skyr, a cultured dairy product (like yogurt), along with crushed raspberries and blueberries, and overnight-soaked oats. The skyr was much sweeter than I anticipated, but I thought the soaked grains gave the whole dish a really nice texture. Overall, while the atmosphere made this a nice brunch destination, the portion sizes were small for the price (though the ingredients were of high quality), the service slow (especially since most of the things they have are served cold), and the flavors weren't particularly on point. read more

I really want to like this place because I am Scandinavian and really appreciate a Scandinavian cafe in the city. But the service here is terrible which is such a shame because their food is pretty good. I can't agree more with what other people have said. This weekend I stopped by for their seasonal cream buns and queued up for 30 minutes outside to put an order in with only four people ahead of me. They had ONE person on the tilt on a busy Saturday afternoon with loads of staff behind the tilt. It doesn't seem very efficient. Also there is no host, no one to clean tables, turn over customers or to greet customers at the door. I understand that it is hard to find staff post pandemic but I really get the impression that it the case of a lack or organization rather than a lack of manpower. I really want you to succeed at Kantine, so please take this as constructive feedback. Invest a little bit in your management and staff so we can all focus on your amazing food! read more

I'm torn between 3 and 4 stars, but will bump it up just to err on the positive side. The store itself was decorated nicely, and there was an abundance of seating. Check! Long line, but it went fast! Check, check. Fresh pastries from the kitchen? Triple check. But be honest, I didn't care for the food very much. I don't think it's on the restaurant, just not my tastes. Service was extremely slow, with a few workers offering to check on our order because they weren't sure why we hadn't received our food yet. I'm trying not to remove stars for this, given the pandemic. The yoghurt was meh, and the porridge was a little off for me. The sourdough bread tasted fresh and nice, but didn't care for the other bread options. Which was sad because bread is one of my favorite foods :( I was most disappointed in the bacon, which I found pretty flavorless. For the most part I think I just wasn't ready for this type of cuisine and was expecting something a bit different. The eggs were delicious, the coffee yummy, and the options from the pastry case FANTASTIC. Kantine is a cool, new Scandinavian place on Market. Walking into the storefront with my friend, I was blown away by the display of fresh pastries by the counter, not to mention the earthy decor. For my first time trying this place out (per my cousin's recommendation), I decided to share a 7-item brunch platter. We got the scrambled eggs, bacon, shrimp, rye bread, melon, lentil hummus, and yogurt with granola and berries. I LOVED their rye bread. It reminded me of the freshly-baked rye breads I could find back when I was traveling around Switzerland and Germany years back. I also really liked the hummus - so creamy and flavorful. Unfortunately, the eggs were a little too hard-scrambled. Also, for $20, the food turned out to be a little pricey. I've been here numerous times and each time have been able to try something new on the menu due to rotating seasonal menus. Some favorite staples though are the eggs (soft boiled with creamed spinach, as well as the scrambled eggs) and any of the house-made proteins (Scandinavian meatballs, cured fish, etc), and yogurt with rye granola. The pastry case is also filled with interesting, drool-worthy Scandinavian pastries that are less commonly found in the typically croissant-filled cases of SF cafes. For those who are curious, the russian herring is basically fish in this beet mayo sauce. It's bright purple and quite good. These cardamom buns are carved out and stuffed with almond paste and cream and topped off with powdered sugar which is why they are commonly enjoyed on or close to Fettisdagen or Fat Tuesday which falls on March 1 this year. It is with great sadness that I pronounce Kantine officially over and done with. This Scandinavian spot used to be a true SF gem, but three things happened to hasten it's demise. 1. Kantine has done away with its Pick 5 and Pick 7 items menu. The luscious scrambled eggs? Gone. The hearty and delicious bacon? Gone. The bread and butter? Gone as well! All of the other wonderful yogurt dishes that made these orders special? Gone, or relegated to an overpriced and forgotten a la carte selection at the bottom of the menu. 2. The highest prices, and that includes every similar restaurants located in Scandinavian countries! The hot smoked trout bowl was still on the menu, but I was dismayed to see that it now costs $19. We ordered it anyway, since it was all we recognized from Kantine's prior winning menu. 3. The portion sizes, at least for the trout bowl. When our server delivered our two trout bowls to us, we were dismayed that the bowls were literally only half filled with ingredients. We finished these bowls in under five minutes and instantly regretted our decision to rise early for a hearty Kantine morning. We were still hungry and talking about McDonalds. So, after a disappointingly small breakfast of two trout bowls, one morning bun, and a small drink, a bill for $55 not including tip, and the malaise of not eating what we really wanted, my daughter and I officially declared Kantine dead. It's too bad, but evidently the word has already gotten out because it was the only time I've visited when it was empty and there was no line. I don't usually write Yelp reviews but was super bummed to find out that the menu here changed and they removed the best part of their offering - the boards. The menu is now just like that of any other cafe with sandwiches, pastries and coffee (they allegedly have wine but they didn't have any wine by the glass today). It's also puzzling that a place that always had a line decided to take away space for tables. Inside was uncomfortably hot even though it was cool outside. I recommend heading to Le Marais instead where they have plenty of seating, the staff is super friendly - and they have boards! read more

Came here on a Danish friend's recommendation. Denmark is known for their open-faced sammies and porridge. It was a gorgeous day out so we brought our doggie and sat outside in the sun. We ordered the herring, the roast beef and the egg salad open faced sandwiches. Omg delicious. It's light but filling. Next trip we'll do the a la cart brunch board. I love the way the Danes pile on their sandwiches. Everything was perfectly seasoned. I was delightfully surprised the herring was my fave - the perfect blend of pickled fish without being too much. The place was so light and airy - very Danish in feel - if you're into Nordic design. It was hygge cozy too with little cushioned benches by the window. Definitely coming back soon. The Grovbirkes sandwich with some of the pastries is good. But they lack in customer service. I ordered my sandwich and the pick up was 11:25am and so I headed over there and there is no sign to tell you where is pick up or order line. So I stood there, politely, patiently on the side to not interfere with incoming customers and not ONE server bothered to ask if I am here for pick up or pretty much look my way. I stood there for about 10 minutes as the servers at the counter exchanged conversation and jokes. I don't want to be cupcaked but at least say "I'll be with you in a second". The food was good, not the best, but customer service can and should be improved. We are not ghosts, please look at us and assist. read more

From the three times I've been here, on different weekday mornings, I'm a fan. Highlights: Delicious cold brew made in-house, with one of their special blends. I recommend getting a splash of oat milk on top. There are always 5-6 different types of freshly baked pastries on display. I've tried two so far - one is their cinnamon roll -- and it was soft, warm, and had just a light amount of sweetener. I'm turning this spot into my regular morning grab and go spot (but there's also the option of dining in as there is a fair amount of seating). Fantastic, unique, foodie experience. I had the 5 item Board, creamed spinach and soft boiled egg, Havarti Cheese, Bacon/Sausage, Porridge and the Sprouted Rye Bread, $15. The freshness of each item on my Board was unbelievable. The cheese was rich and creamy, the egg was soft and the spinach perfectly seasoned, bacon and sausage cooked but still moist, bread is handmade in house and is absolute perfection. Went about a year ago and it took over an hour to order and get food, so today we got there 10 minutes before opening and were the first ones in line. Over 35 minutes later we still have no food and are watching others' food come out. I went in to investigate and was told the kitchen never received the order ticket (how is this possible?). Cancelled our order and left hungry and cranky. We also observed a woman throw up in the bathroom because she was served cows milk instead of oat milk and was extremely lactose intolerant. So it's frustrating when you go for dine-in you you are expected to FIGHT for a seat OR be disappointed... the seating area is nice and one problem they face is that people will order a single espresso and sit there slowly sipping on it for HOURS. Personally, I don't feel they should offer dine in when it get's so crowded OR maybe they could hire more wait staff to help manage this issue.
