Ordered food from here last night at the last minute and they delivered it pretty quickly! As I've mentioned in previous reviews of Thai restaurants, I have one in particular that I am absolutely in love with. You know, that one Thai restaurant where nothing can compare to, and it holds a special place to your heart. The thing is, it's a little bit of a drive from my apartment so when I'm not in the mood to drive out, I need to find something good by me. I remembered Kao Cafe because its located on Ventura Blvd. near my work. I had a co-worker who used to live in Thailand for a bit and told me that this place was the closest tasting Thai food he's found by our work to the real thing. I ate here once with my vegan friend and remembered it being pretty good. So last night, after relaxing and not wanting to go out, me and my bf were hungry and decided to order food. I remembered Kao Cafe and decided to try them. I ordered a large coconut soup with shrimp and a pineapple curry with shrimp. One white rice and one brown rice. Totaled out to about $30 with tip. Speedy delivery and the food was REALLY good. If I want to order Thai food delivery again, it will be from here. The shrimps were good, the brown rice was that purpl-y rice and the flavor was on point. I was so famished that I forgot to take a picture of it. I will be sure to next time! read more

Hands down some of the best Asian food I've had in a long time. I was visiting from out of town and even though the shop is small it made up for it with its big flavors. The crab delight was a perfect ratio of stuffing and the sauce if came with was so good I got an extra side to put on my pork fried rice. Even though I've had some great crab puffs other places what really knocked this meal out of the park was their Pork Fried Rice. The pork was excellently cooked. Not too tough but cooked through. The rice was sort of sticky but still had great flavor to it. 10/10 will be back anytime I'm in the area. read more

I grew up eating Thai/Laos food because my dad is Thai and my mom is Lao and I must say, I am IMPRESSED by this small cafe. There are many thai restaurants in LA, but this one holds a special place in my heart because it reminds me of my dad's cooking so much! The laarb is my favorite here. It's super fresh with mint leaves, cilantro, and onions. I know every place uses the same ingredients, but this one is just so well balanced. You can take to go, I prefer to dine in. Its quaint, and relaxing with excellent service! No seating outside on the sidewalk, or in the back alley, and at such reasonable prices! I had dinner here recently and thoroughly enjoyed it. I ordered a simple meal: Lemongrass Soup and Kao's Fresh Rolls with shrimp. Both were delicious, the soup having the most flavor, of course. The Fresh Rolls come with plentiful peanut dipping sauce that is just so addictive. The service was excellent and my server was very friendly. The place's decor is crisp, clean, and modern. Came here for the first time after randomly Yelping back in August 2019 (when we could dine in). The photo below is from that day. I can't even begin to explain the feeling I had at this little hole-in-the-wall restaurant. The server was this sweet Asian woman who made us feel like we were at home and she was our grandma. I'm never in Sherman Oaks but otherwise I would be here all the time. Along with the ambiance, this is some of the best thai food I have ever had. I was driving by last week so I stopped by and picked up some of the Pad See Ew and Green Curry for take-out!! I had one bite of the pad see ew and saved it in the fridge for later. When I woke up from my nap, my little brother who doesn't even like pad see ew had eaten the WHOLE THING and I almost cried, though I'm glad he loved it that much. I am beyond disappointed and disgusted with my food. I have been ordering food from here for years and always order the same items. Today we placed an order through UberEats. The chicken is chewy and tastes old on both orders of Pad See Ew. Typically we get broccoli in the order. Both orders had leaves of whatever they put in it. We ordered the Mango and sticky rice. The rice is stale and hard. We called two times to the restaurant to complain and tell them.....they said to contact Uber Eats since that is where we ordered it. They did not apologize. They did not try to make it right. They did not say anything to be helpful or try to make it right. Absolutely horrible customer service. When someone calls to complain about the quality of their food, it should be taken seriously. We will never order from here again. read more

Not sure why all the mixed reviews? We actually had a pleasant experience during our recent visit. Only complaint is service can be slow at times due to high volume of take-out order, but overall food is solid. We actually discovered this place while dining next door at Blue Jam Cafe. Though tiny inside and seating is limited, it's actually quite charming and has a nice vibe. The modern black-brown woodwork and decor compliments the space well. The open kitchen feature with glass divider provides a nice feature. As avid cook myself, I actually like to see how my food is being prepared. Menu offers authentic Thai cuisine that's reasonably priced. Here are the verdict on some of the dishes that we ordered - *Seafood tom yum soup is best I've had. The broth is excellent and amount of seafood is ample, including actual crab legs. *Spicy chicken fried rice is delicious, but super spicy as hell. Thank god I have an iron stomach and can tolerate the heat. Make sure to tell the chef how spicy you want it. *Beef panang - flavors of the curry was on point, but not enough meat. *Chicken Satay - tasty and meat tender. * Mango sticky rice - excellent , mango was sweet and ripe. Make sure to check with server if the mango is ripe before ordering. Overall, not the best Thai I've eaten, but worthy of a return visit. read more

Normally this is an excellent choice for Thai food but tonight we have been struck with food poisoning. We ordered the red curry but received something else, the Thai coconut soup with tofu was great as usual, pad Thai with shrimp (that was the culprit), a mild vegetable delight and the best Thai iced tea. Everything looked great and the taste was fine but that shrimp was the devil! read more

The crying Tiger steak was amazing. The pumpkin shrimp Curry was fine/OK- Shrimps were big, but I don't know if shrimp is the best protein for this kind of curry. The lemongrass soup with chicken had tons of chicken. Overall great place to have dinner. read more

This is the closest Thai place in my area and I'm super satisfied with that. Very friendly service and some of the best Thai I've had in a while. I had the dumplings, crab delight (crab rangoon), chicken satay, and spring rolls as apps, then the pad thai as my entree and mango sticky rice for dessert. (Yes I had help eating all that). Everything was great, the dumpling sauce was delicious, the satay was perfectly done, the rangoons were a little on the cream cheese side but still very yummy, and the spring rolls were alright as well. The pad thai was a little rubbery/chewy for my liking but the flavor was nuts, and the mango sticky rice was super good. Definitely stopping by again, I recommend you do as well. read more

Oh man I'm so happy I ordered from here. I was craving crab rangoons and for some reason the Chinese restaurants around here only have "cheese wontons" and chicken rangoons (??), but these "Crab Delights" are THE BEST... probably the best crab rangoons I've ever had. A lot of that has to do with the dipping sauce. I don't know what they put in it that's different from your standard sweet & sour sauce in the little plastic tubs but it is SO GOOD. The perfect level of tanginess & just a touch of sweetness that complements the rangoons without overwhelming them. Great Thai iced tea and yellow curry, too. Both very solid! The curry is mild (just a little spicy) and arrived super fresh, almost steaming hot, which was very nice. Wonderful place, hope to order again soon! read more

This little cafe style Thai restaurant offers generous portions of deliciously flavored Thai dishes . Tried the combination Pad Thai - as i always do when visiting a Thai place first time - and i was not disappointed. In fact it was one of the best i've had anywhere. Chicken satay with peanut sauce was equally wonderful with large chunks of perfectly done chicken on each skewer. Recommended for great food . Im sorry but I usually don't give low ratings. But the food here was not good. We usually order from a different Thai Place. But It was closed because it was late. So decided to try something different. But one of the first complaint was the lack of chicken that my husband received for his eggplant with chicken dish. The fried rice that we ordered lacked flavor. We received a small amount of rice, for our side of rice. My crying tiger beef dish was ok. This place is pretty legit. Great tasting curries and I assume other items, too, as my friend was beyond pleased after finishing his Salmon meal. The price isn't bad, either. I guess my only reservation is ordering vegan, which made me feel like a pain in the behind. There were only two "vegan curries" (red and pumpkin), and for the pumpkin you sub the shrimp for tofu and request no fish oil...so yea, I felt like the difficult customer upon ordering. Nonetheless, the curry I ate (I ended up ordering the pumpkin, with the substitutions listed previously) was delicious from beginning to end, no complaints whatsoever. I didn't even mind the spice (they make their curries SPICY), and that is saying a great deal from someone that cringes at the thought of jalapeños. I would come back with a friend or what not, but considering all the vegan restaurants in Sherman Oaks and L.A, at that, I think I'll save myself and fellow servers slight headaches and just go to an all vegan establishment (or one that has pre-customized vegan options). read more
