I have passed Karma Brew a million times and finally stopped in one Friday night and was not disappointed. The place is small but there is a little patio that is nice to sit out and people watch. There was a variety of beers and wine to choose from but my date and I decided on the house made sangria and we loved it. It was very smooth and filled with fruit (fruit had a strong alcohol taste) and it was topped cinnamon. I have never had cinnamon in sangria before but it was super delicious. I would claim this as my preferred bar in Sac -- granted, I've only been here twice...which is as much as or twice as much as other places :P I tried the House Red and the Double Red. Both enjoyable to me, novice of beers. The vegetarian tapas tray is divine. The vegetarian panini has great flavor, though I didn't care mush for the lavash wrap. The prices are pretty stellar, too. Quirky little place. The interior is very eclectic. Pretty decent selection of beer and wine (I personally like the Cabernet). I love coming here during the evening and reading in the corner. They always seem to be playing Pink Floyd, with a few random oldies thrown in between. Seems to be a great place to bring a date either before or after dinner. This was such a cute and eclectic little bar. I have driven by it so many times, but finally had the chance to go inside on a Friday afternoon around 4 pm. The view of the park is a nice addition to homey feel of this place. They have a good amount of drink options, including beer, wine, and a few seasonal cocktails. I've been eyeing this place for a while and never ended up going inside because I was either full from lunch or leaving the gym (needed water, not beer!). Finally wandered in on a sunny Saturday afternoon to continue my beer week buzz. I love how eclectic the decor is. It feels like beer hall meets antique store. Everything in Karma probably can't be found anywhere else. There's a good amount of seating inside and on their patio, but I can see that it might get pretty busy at peak times since the space is a bit small and narrow. They don't have a traditional drink menu, but you can look at the sings with the beer logos and prices to see what you would like to order. I ordered the Allagash White and it was sweet and creamy. Every time we come here we feel like we are home away from home. Anthony has amazing taste and as an artist he has designed this place with such detail that one can't help but feel that they are in a far away place. I supposed if you had no interest in eating, it would be great, but it literally takes a half hour to get a little hummus with pita. Every time. And simply getting service is challenging. Their hours are BS. Their website states the hours are from 3 p.m.-10 p.m. Monday - Thursday, but when we showed up at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, they were closed and not a soul was inside, nor was there any notice posted as to why they were closed or when they would be open. I'm not the first one to experience this; there are at least two other reviewers here who went during supposed business hours only to find the place shut down (although why that warrants three-star reviews I don't understand). Apparently it doesn't matter if you call first to check if they are open, as one reviewer reported doing this, Karma Brew saying "yes, we're open" and he or she arriving there to find it closed. Hey, Karma Brew: if you're not going to be open during your posted hours, CHANGE YOUR HOURS to when you actually will be open. A few of my friends have been loving on this place, so a group and I decided to make a stop after leaving the less-than-stellar University of Beer. I am so in love with the vibe of this place it's not even funny. I felt like I was in an Eastern European coffee shop, a warm, cozy place to catch up with close friends. I think in the winter this place will be like a dream. There was an interesting, eclectic mix of decorative pieces and styles. There is a small selection of beers and wines, but you can tell they are carefully selected. They have a small menu as well, and a friend had a sandwich that he described as exquisite. I asked the proprietor about sour beers, and he said they offered only one selection. He described to me how the same wooden spoons have been used for two hundred years in the making of this brand of beer, and that the oxidation from the spoons contributes to this incredible, heavy, tart flavor. Three of my friends tried mine, and all three ended up buying the same beer. Have I mentioned I LOVE hearing stories and learning tidbits from the older generation? I think I could easily sit at the bar and talk about beer and wine with this gentleman all day. It was a very personal, homey experience, and I will be back! read more

This bar does not waste space. It provides tasty treats and does not bother with filler. I get the impression the beer selection is personalized to the owner; but in a good way. It is as if he decided he would only serve beers to people that he would want to drink. Again, I think this is a good thing. I had a taste of the sangria and will probably go back for more. A great location. The fifteen year old me would be very excited that they seemingly only play Pink Floyd. Well into adulthood me finds it less charming, even more so as no matter when one walks by that is all that seems to be playing. When they first opened i happened by attracted by the sound system playing some django reinherdt type jazz. I made a mental note to come back. Of course different bartenders put their own jams on, so when i finally went in, it was Pink Floyd. Retro-kitsch? No, they just really like Pink Floyd. I stayed for one drink, it was odd time of day so place was empty. Price and selections are not bad and i know they get busy at night. I spend a lot of time in this area now and every time I walk by, it is same loud pink floyd playing this and fact can hear the music playing from my friend's place nearby has become a deterrent to trying them again. I came here yesterday with my boyfriend for the first time. We were immediately greeted by a server who was very knowledgable about the beer choices. I like trying out new spots during their happy hour so I was pleased to see food choices as I'm not a big alcohol drinker. My boyfriend and I came here to check this place out. We always see people on the patio area which is nice and the deco inside is very unique. I really like the feel as it is different from most places you visit in the downtown area. My boyfriend ordered 1 beer from the happy hour choice and two others. I was slightly hungry and ordered a mozzarella, roasted potato tapa as it's featured on their happy hour menu. Prices range from $4-$15 (drinks and food). The tapa was ok. It's a great place for vegetarians to go to or choosing a healthier meal, but I won't order that tapa again. From reviews, it seems that the hummus platter, cheese platter and the Karma platter are popular choices, but too much for just one person. I may give this place a try again, but I did appreciate the people (who seem to be regulars) were very nice and the one server was very friendly. read more

Most bars I visit have an ultra uniformed fake plastic feel. You know the ones, Ikea plastic furniture, flat screen tv's everywhere, no character. Karma brew however has character and an amazing atmosphere. The bar is chiseled from wood, the furniture is restored from a vintage state. I've been to Anthony's ...er...Karma Brew many times. I love the location and if you can get a seat outside, it makes for great people watching. It is a cozy little joint, but Anthony has made it feel like home. There are no feelings of pretentiousness or corporatism here. If you are in a hurry to get a bud light on the way to a frat party, then this is not the place for you. If you like good people, a chill atmosphere, scrumptious snacks, and cold craft brews, then come on down! I enjoy the food and beer and all are priced fairly. On tap he has Newport Brewing, Flying Dog, Allagash and Weihenstephaner, the last being my personal favorite. Like I said, I've been coming to Karma Brew a while and I have seen it grow from an immature youth to the solid establishment it is today. Karma Brew is easily the classiest bar in the downtown/ midtown area. The owner has a lot of love built into his business, and often tends bar himself. He takes pride in having the best selection of craft beer in the area, which is saying a lot considering his bar is next to a bar with over a 100 beers on tap. If you don't enjoy beer, his Sangria is definitely the best. It's heavy on fruit and comes with a fork. The top is layered with cinnamon for extra flavor. He also uses his Sangria to make some of his food dishes, which is amazing. Besides the great drink selections, the decor and atmosphere really add to the place. The bar feels like a wine cellar and is filled with old antiques. Outside there is a patio great for summer drinking. He either has jazz playing, or the sweet sweet guitar of Pink Floyd. We were walking by and wanted a place that had outdoor seating. Karma Brew for the bill. They have a small outdoor patio that has room for about 10 people. I ordered the $5 sangria and it hit the spot on this warm winter day. It's different than typical sangria, but good. My husband ordered the Devils Tale ale. Two drinks were $16 including tip. A little pricey for the beer at $8 for a small glass, but it was good. The sangria was well priced at $5. No happy hour that we could tell. First time here and I give it 4 because I haven't gotten to know the staff yet but so far I like it. It's very quaint. It's good for you and your significant other to come and have some rounds and talk for awhile. Not really good for huge groups as the place is small. Great import/craft brew selection. I didn't even see a tab for domestic which is a-ok with me. I tried the hemp ale and it was good, lots of head and caramel-ly. The positive - this place has a great look, unlike anything I've seen around. I've read in a review that it reminded them of a gypsy tavern and I have to agree. We sat inside, and got a nice table that looked like a tree stump, but I noticed that the patio was small but very popular place to sit. They also had a spot for dogs to take a water break too. The negative - Sadly the look didn't make up for my experience there. The female bartender was rude. Never really answered a question and always acting like either she didn't want us there or had better people to help then us. Which is odd cause there was only 3 other people inside when we came in. My drink tasted like watered down quick (the powered chocolate drink) and all our food was way over vinegared and too mushy, like they were making baby food and not Tapas . I would guess it was vinegared (not a word I know) to make it last longer in a refrigerator, (like your prepacked potato salad at a cheap grocers), and then reheated. Tapas is not hard to make fresh daily and make it good. Sorry, but its not. I didn't get into the beers, because I didn't want to give more money to a place that messed up my cocktail, food and was rude. read more

The decor is neat. Like legit cool and interesting and something that you won't find pretty much anywhere else. The owner obviously likes to thrift and has good taste. The porch is hella nice too. Smoking is allowed so your enjoyment might be affected. The wine pours are fair and they have some really, really nice glassware. Glad I don't have to handle that as an employee because it's way too nice for a bar setting but damn the big glasses (that not everyone gets) are impressive. Sadly, I have to agree with many of the other reviews. Minus three stars for the unadvertised 8-12oz beer pours. That's criminal. I work at a place that sells a lot of beer and every pour that is less than a pint is clearly advertised and servers are required to inform customers that they are getting less than 16oz because that's what everyone expects when they get a beer at a bar. At least Zelda's only pulls this for a $1 domestic and a $2 Bud is legit and even if they forget to tell you it's just a buck. For a place that comes up as "Karma Brew," the tap list is small and somewhat standard. Beer drinkers can find everything Karma has everywhere else. Shoot, you can find it all at University of Beer and Burgers and Brew. There are obviously not enough beer glasses since you can see the bartenders pour ice water in glasses that have just been washed and see the ice melt very quickly. My beer glass was not room temperature and affected my $7 8oz drink. I ordered a Sangria next and I'm almost positive that it's Franzia. I still remember college. At the register, I poked my head around to look into the bak and I swear I saw a white box sitting above the food prep. Also, I suspect that it's Forever Sangria. It tastes bitter, which is what happens when you let sangria sit for too long. I watched an employee simply top off the container of it when it was about a third empty. Ummm...that should be drained and rotated. And it would explain why the fruit was inedible. I really hope that's not what they're doing, but it sure tasted like it. If you do go to Karma, stick with the wine. It's the only decent deal there and I'm still kicking myself for not just following my date's lead. Strangely enough, they don't do any real speciality cocktails other than some strange (or novel if you're not writing a two star review) and the space and business model seems to practically demand it. And while the decor is really neat, the seating wasn't comfortable; we moved twice. This should be a great date night spot and it still is if you stick to wine. But don't wander from that or you will be disappointed. read more

Love the bossa nova (brazilian jazz) that they play. The place is very cosy for couples to hang out and get good conversation. There is also a nice outdoor patio to get some fresh air. Only thing I didn't like was that the beers were a little pricey. Also, if you've had a few beers and are craving bar type food, then this is not that place. But they do have Mediterranean cuisine (lavash, hummus, greek salad, paninis, etc), which is on the healthier side (but who wants to eat healthy when you're drinking?)
