Sangria & Hummus! SITREP My lovely friend Bambi introduced me to a fun, exquisite Saturday afternoon (quasi-)tradition of Sangria & Hummus @ Karma Brew! THE SETUP Located at the corner of 16th & P Streets in the house that Mochi Yogurt used to be, it's at a prime location for people just wanted to walk from their nearby home, condo or townhouse - of which there are many many in this busy hood. On the opposite corner across 16th Street are the stalwart enterprises of Nishiki Sushi and Starbucks. Kitty corner is Orchid Thai, which is just up from Hot Italian on the same block. And across P Street is the active, thriving Fremont Park, home of concerts, festivals and "Chalk It Up!" P-A-T-I-O So I mention this because there is so much fun stuff to see from the vantage point of sitting on the patio there at Karma Brew, on a beautiful spring twilight evening, sipping on a Hef or a Sangria, dipping med-breads into a delicious garlic hummus and feeling your cares melt away. INSIDE! But inside Karma Brew is so very entertaining in a yet a very different fashion: think of fun levels of *kitschy* provided by the art and photos on the wall ("Is that R2D2 & C3PO in the corner?"), the unique furnishings ("Are those theatre seats?"), the stained glass, the exquisite mirrors, the lazy susan at the table where are drinks and hummus sit atop, etc. etc. THE LOWDOWN Karma Brew is the perfect eclectic chill spot, and should you be lucky enough to live in this neighborhood (or anywhere near, really), I envy you! read more

I can't say enough good things about this place. I noted the good yelp reviews, and I thought I would bring my cousins in when they came to visit. I walk past Karma Brew every day on my way to and from the office; it always seems cozy, and never too crammed full of people. I visited for the first time last night with aforementioned visiting cousins, and was completely blown away by the old fashioned hospitality that we received. We had come in after hitting a previous place for food and brew that we weren't as thrilled with, and ordered two espressos, as Karma Brew also boasts traditional coffee without the frills, and apparently, tea, along with a very reasonably priced (That might just be my recent move from the SF Bay Area though) assortment of Belgian and Craft Brews. The gentleman behind the bar was warm and welcoming, and invited us to have a seat. There are cozy, comfy chairs inside that almost made those of us who had been to Europe feel as if we were back there again. Patio tables and chairs with a view of Fremont Park can also be found outdoors. We were very suprised when the gentleman behind the counter came over to offer my cousin some complimentary tea, since he hadn't felt like ordering anything. He also talked to us for a bit about his business background, which was fascinating.It happened to be a lovely rooibos blend that smelled of vanilla. What a pleasant surprise! Nice little bar. Not a ton of space, but I really liked the atmosphere. Very unique with a lot of flair. There were 5 of us and we were pretty indecisive about what we wanted to order, but the servers were super patient and pleasant. Not always the case when you go to a bar. I got the Vitus beer which I really enjoyed. We also got naan pizza, which was decent. Not my favorite pizza, but overall I liked the atmosphere. I love this tiny, quirky little place! It's one of those places you drive past all the time and keep meaning to go to but forget about when people ask you where you want to go. Did that even make sense?! Anyways - do yourself a favor and give this place a try! It has a really good beer selection & while it's a little pricey it's worth it to me. Snag a seat outside if you can - it's such a great view and super interesting people watching because it's a busy corner. The inside seating is kind of strange; old movie theater seats and benches and...other various types. Bartenders are always nice. KARMA BREW gets 5 stars for its service, eclectic environment and food. I highly suggest you drop by as the way you are attended to and the ambiance is unique. Their tapas are delicious, they serve wine, and have 8-9 beers on tap. If you prefer tea or gourmet coffee, it is also available. They have a small but cozy outdoor patio to add to the experience. It's okay. I came here when The restaurant I wanted to go to was closed and other restaurants were closing at the 9 pm Sacramento-restaurant witching hour. The menu is limited, but vegetarians and vegans will have more to choose from, here, than they will at many other restaurants with larger menus. I ordered the vegetarian panini, which isn't really a panini--it's a wrap. And it was delicious: drunken sautéed mushrooms (cooked in beer), roasted eggplant, potato/lentil mash with a touch of curry, a big pickle spear and melted mozzarella (leave it off for a vegan meal). It's accompanied by your choice of roasted potatoes topped with cheese or a side salad also sprinkled with cheese and a spoonful of cherry(?) compote, which I spread on my wrap. But...I suspect people visit more for the libations--a generous selection of brews on tap and in the can/bottle, and some decent wines and cocktails. Service was neither stellar nor overly lacking. And the old rock soundtrack (yep, Pink Floyd counts in that camp, now) seemed to put the Karma in an otherwise meh evening. read more

I'd give it a 5/5 if they would stop breaking the law. They are letting people smoke on the patio. That's illegal. They've been doing it for over a year. This is my favorite bar but I'm going to stop going here because of the smoking. We always end up sitting on the patio having a great night when some idiots walk in and start smoking. We brought it up to the staff this time but they acted oblivious, so I'm sure it won't change. It is legit against the law to smoke in any establishment. Why is this still happening? I'll be finding out if we should just be calling the police next time. At least one law stating that no smoking is allowed can be found in the California Labor Code, section 6404.5 read more

This. Place. Right. Here. We wandered into Karma Brew on a cold, weekday night (read: the place was practically empty) and found a warm, cozy haven. This is the kind of place where I'd happily lounge the hours away. Venue: it's not huge but it has atmosphere in spades. It feels like a small European pub with a bohemian vibe: a dark wood bar, dim lighting, vintage art on the walls, mismatched but comfortable seating around tiny tables, and a Pink Floyd concert soundtrack playing softly overhead. Menu: again, not huge but tantalizing and tasty food and drink options. Assorted beers on tap, interesting wines, and delicious small bites/appetizers, tapas and sampler plates. Prices are fair to moderate. I can now understand why Karma Brew is usually so packed on weekend nights. I will definitely wander back in on some other slow night. read more

I randomly stopped by here for a random beer and pastrami sandwich. This is one of those places you'll always drive by but never actually go in. Since I was just killing time in the the area I actually went in to check it out. The joint is very unique in every way--the decor/furniture, the way they show what beers they have, the earthy/vegetarian-ness, the music, etc. There was one nice dude working (is it always just him?) who did everything (serving drinks, preparing food, and just chatting with people). I guess with all the homeliness this place has, the name of Karma Brew is appropriate because it's like entering someone's home and you want to treat it how you'd like your home to be treated. My husband and I recently moved to the area and decided to stop here during our nightly walk. Because of COVID the inside was closed, but they have such a nice little outdoor area with heating lamps, so we didn't mind. I ordered a kaluha coffee and my husband got an Irish coffee and they were both great! The woman who helped us was so friendly despite the fact that we were so indecisive with what we wanted to order. I came with a group of friends on a recommendation yesterday. We were all very excited to try the espresso martini as that what was recommended. I ordered for the group to make it easier, so I ordered 10 martinis. The person who helped us was very rude and when we received our drinks, they were all in plastic cups instead of martini glasses. Came here last night with a group of friends and was completely delighted with the cozy, boho atmosphere of this cute little bar! Why have I not come here sooner? Located in the up and coming 16th Street, this tiny bar serves about 8 beers on tap (Weihenstephaner!) as well as wine, and a few specialty drinks. Since it was so cold, I ordered the mulled wine and was pleasantly surprised to find the spices in harmony with the red wine, brewed to a perfect warmness. All of the drinks are served in stylish vintage stemware, and the music is played through vinyls. Everything is vintage-chic, just how I like it! There are just two complaints I have about this adorable place: First, it's a very small space so it's very difficult to get a group together of more than 4 people. My group of 7 was lucky and managed to snag the only "large" table in the place after about a half an hour but this was on a weekday night! Can't imagine being able to do that during a weekend evening... My second complaint is the pricing of the food. I ordered the naan pizza last night ($8) and was expecting, well, at least a small sized pizza, but was instead greeted with a pita-bread-sized pizza cut into 10 little pieces. The naan pizza was quite tasty, but I couldn't shake the feeling that it was extremely over-priced especially since Uncle Vito's is across the street where you can get a beer and pizza slice for $6 during happy hour. With that being said, perhaps don't order the food here, but do come here for the reasonably priced and delicious drinks! read more

I came in tonight with my wife today around 5 and I guess you can say it was crowded, even though there were only about 15 people, just because it's a very small place. We just wanted to get a couple of drinks and spend some time here and get a little snack. So first off, the bartender was pretty nice and chill and helped us right away. My wife ordered a stout beer and I had a cocktail, it was called the Amore something, I don't quite remember the second word but it both drinks were really good! I have no complaints there. We also ordered the cheese platter. Unfortunately I didn't take a picture, but it was honestly the saddest cheese platter I've ever had. It was presented SO sloppily! There was a weird tasting salad on it and just some average store bought Gouda that I've bought from the store before. There were some sliced raw almonds on it and it was all just so boring and very average tasting. But to top it off, I took a bite of cheese and quickly realized I NOW HAD A HAIR IN MY MOUTH! Disgusting. And then to top off that, the whole time we were there, there was a drunk guy that would not leave us alone. That really was the final nail in the coffin for us. We decided to get out of the as quickly as possible. We were hoping to love this place because it's so cool inside but it wasn't. The ambiance was quite cozy which I liked, but the drinks were a little to "out there" for me and the food was not that interesting (very limited menu, weird tasting dolmas). We came on a night where it wasn't very crowded which I enjoyed, but I don't think I would have liked it if too many people were crowding into such a small space. Staff was nice though. read more

I'm so happy this prime corner lot across from the park has been put to good use. Gone is the uninspired and un-visited mochi shop. Now we have a quaint little joint serving brews of all styles and varieties, from beer to coffee. My first visit of hopefully many was late on a Saturday night. The place was only half full (I imagine the word is still spreading), which gave my friend and I easy access to the bar and bartender, who was a friendly chap that chatted us up, offered beer tastings and walked us through each brew. We took our beers to the patio and enjoyed a warm Sacramento summer evening. I especially like the fact that they haven't gone overboard with their selection. Many restaurants and bars these days think that quantity is quality. Karma had maybe five beers on tap that were all unique. Really, what more do you need? Karma Brew is a small, casual beer/wine, coffee, tea, kombucha and food cafe with a patio overlooking Fremont Park. It is small and intimate, with eclectic decor and an amusing and engaging owner who enjoys chatting with the customers. Call first as hours may be different than those posted on Yelp! Cards are accepted. Karma is the brainchild of Anthony Sadeghi, whom we met on a recent evening as he got there, late - to open up (This was my third attempt at stopping in, only to find them closed, and I'm still confused as to what the hours are). Anthony explained that his cook wasn't to arrive for another hour, and he was hosting a private party. He apologized for keeping us waiting and offered to bring beers - OK, now things were improving. A few minutes later we were sipping a pair of draft Coronado Brewing Idiot IPAs, and munching on some tortilla chips. Having just visited BloodSource across the street, we decided we should eat soon. Since it was still 45 minutes until the cook was expected to arrive, we walked inside to find out what was owed. To our surprise, he had prepared an appetizer for us - so what the heck, we sat down at the bar and ordered another couple beers. Here's where things got fun: Anthony started telling us his story and of other Karma businesses he had started. He's a designer, photographer and amiable guy with interesting answers: Me: Are you an immigrant? Anthony: No. Me: Where are you from? Anthony: London. Other taps include Newport Brewing, Flying Dog, The Brewery, Allagash and Weihenstephaner, which apparently lays claim to world's oldest brewery. Showing off his Weihenstephaner tap tower, Anthony poured us a taste of this refreshing lager. Finding it delicious, I ordered a glass, which incidentally was a half liter (at $6, a good deal). All in all, we had a good time in a unique cafe owned by a gregarious businessman. We didn't get a chance to try any menu items - save that for next time. My only gripes: post and abide by operating hours, ditch the cut-glass beer goblets (13 oz/$6) for pint glassware - and when you're late opening up, buy me a beer! The roundup: Food: ? - Tried only the "off menu" dolmas and olives and the chips. Service: 4 - Five star personality. Setting: 4 - Intimate, patio's great for checking out the park. During beer week, many of these places are hopping with activity and crowded with people. I had the chocolate chip fudge brownie served with a blackberry dessert liquor and a few berries.... This cozy gem of a bar is a great place to enjoy a glass of some imbibe-able after work. Karma Brew is a small bar(i.e. 30-35 occupancy) but full of character and charm. The interior decor is interesting, i couldn't grasp the theme, possibly German and a tad Middle Eastern or Mediterranean style; ambiance is peaceful but can easily get cramped. In other words, I wouldn't recommend this place to big groups (6+) but maybe couples or groups no bigger than four. Bottom line its a bar but a little more sophisticated than your average dive bar. Dont let the small seating capacity off-set your visit, give the place a try and enjoy some of their fine German and Belgium beer... The only thing i wish they had were pitcher servings instead of single servings of beer. Cheers! Karma Brew. This sweet little spot where you can enjoy a beer in a quiet calm atmosphere. With nooks & crannies that look like they came straight out of Harry Potter books. Where the owner is offering you his home brew, fresh bruschetta and blends of tea, not on the menu. The meet up spot for book club tonight. And a place I'll be frequenting more often. What a gem. This is the kind of place you'd want to be a regular. It is very small and dark to the point that it's ranging on divey but the very neat and fun decorations make it feel that it's more hipster than divey. After reading the reviews to this place, I decided to give this place a try. The bartender for the evening was a friendly, young, soft spoken lady. The place itself is kinda small but with a very good outdoor seating to a nice view of a park and street intersection. First drink I got was the Sangria. Never quite tasted sangria like this. Hard to describe but Im going to try......it's like drinking a fruity bottle of perfume. Me personally, I wasn't a huge fan of it but it was interesting, worth a try. My next drink was a dark beer I forgot the name of but it was 10.4% I believe. Very good. Downside is that the drinks come in a kinda small glass. Also drinks are 5$ and up.
