Since they took charge of ordering the food, I can't tell you exactly what dishes we had, but it was a large assortment of various kinds of sushi and nigiri, enough to feed six people. Every single dish - from the simple to the sophisticated - was absolutely delicious, so I think you cannot go wrong here. I said it was enough to feed six people, but maybe I am wrong about that - every single piece was eaten, and I think we probably could have kept going, it was so damn good. He was attentive and made great recommendations. I went with Omakase of 2 rounds of sashimi and 3 rounds of nigiri. Did I discover my new favorite sushi spot? Yes. I always pass by this plaza at River Oaks and I'm so happy I finally made a reservation to go. Ordered: - Hamachi & Jalapeno Sashimi 5/5 - clean and delicious. I'm going to pour the yuzu olive oil sauce in my soy sauce plate next time. So yum! - Wagyu Skewers 1000/5 (when I order this again, I'm getting a side of rice) - fatty, juicy, nice grill marks, sweet sauce - Toro and Ikura roll 5/5 - simple roll with toro and pickled radish on the inside and the ikura was the nice salty complement to the roll, no need for too much soy sauce. - Octopus with oyster mushrooms and yuzukosho vinaigrette 2.5/5 - this dish is begging for some acidity. I squeezed my lemon from my drink over the octopus and it was much butter. The octopus was quite salty and needed another component to balance it out. The vinaigrette tasted like kewpie mayo. - Peppercorn Tuna nigiri 4/5 - Standard nigiri. Nice pepper crust for added texture. - Tropical Spicy Tuna 4/5 - This roll was very good, but very one note for me. All the components were very soft and everything melted in my mouth altogether. - Green tea cheesecake souffle & red bean ice cream 5/5 - the cheesecake was a bit salty but paired nicely with the red bean ice cream. The ice cream was not as creamy as I expected, with larger ice crystals making it a more icy mouthfeel than creamy. The service was excellent. My water cup was never empty for more than 5 minutes. My absolute favorite restaurant in all of Houston. I could honestly eat here everyday and never get tired of it. I can't even recommend specific menu items because they're all so good. I always get the Mac and cheese (if the lobster doesn't do anything for you, you can get it without for like $10) the wagyu sando and frequently try the specials the offer. The food tasted good but nothing was new or exciting. The service was terrible... our waitress (Karen?) was really slow.. also my friend waited almost 45 minutes for a glass of wine. She clearly forgot to ring it in and then brought us the check. We then asked for the glass of wine and she brought it with a revised check. We also never saw a manager during our visit. Came here with my husband for our anniversary dinner. It was definitely full, but we came on a Saturday so it was expected. The lighting is nice and music is at a perfect level where I could vibe with without having to overcompensate the conversation. The waitress friendly and informative on the menu, but the service was a little slower than I expected for a Sunday evening. Seems like she was the only waitress for the back area. They were so nice they gave us free shrimp tempura because we had our toddler and order omakase which takes a while. Kata Robata has been on my radar for a long time renowned, often talked about, and I imagined the food would live up to the hype. I finally went for my birthday, dinner with my wife, and decided to try things I'd never had before. I started adventurous: oysters topped with uni (sea urchin) and geoduck sashimi. Honestly, I was nervous I didn't know what to expect. I'd seen plenty of videos and read descriptions, but tasting them for myself was a revelation. The oyster with uni was surprisingly sweet, velvety, and perfectly balanced with a champagne-shallot vinaigrette. The geoduck was crunchy in a way I can only compare to tender coconut or lychee, slightly sweet, very delicate, and I barely needed soy to enjoy its flavor. Truly fun and unexpected. However if you are sitting in the front area of the restaurant, then it will be a little nosy. I was very lucky and was able to be seated in the back of the restaurant. We came here to celebrate our anniversary, and the experience was absolutely amazing from start to finish. Drinks: * My all-time favorite? The Pimms Cup--always a winner! * The foie gras nigiri and spicy chopped scallops are must-haves. * We also tried the madai crudo for the first time, highly recommended by our server--so glad we did! * The oyster with caviar was a newer addition, and it was absolutely delicious. Lucked out and got a 6:30pm Friday night reservation a couple of hours prior. It was definitely very busy which is a testament to the food The menu is a decent size with a good variety of Japanese food. The drink menu also has plenty of choices of cocktails, wines, and spirits. To drink, I had the peach lychee martini and it was great. Well made, balanced, and not too sweet. For food we had several nigiri (salmon, chutoro, unagi, hamachi, spicy chopped scallop) and all of them were very good with large pieces of fish. My favorite was the spicy chopped scallop, so good! We also enjoyed the miso cod and ocean roll. The food did not disappoint. Service was fast and friendly. I will definitely be adding this spot to my rotating list of sushi places to visit! read more

We used to live close to here a while ago but haven't been here for years. Really disappointed. 1. Lobster ramen: its 25$ but has tiny meats and noodles were all cooked together like a chunk of bread. 2. I ordered wagyu meat sushi and it had a big chunk that I could not chew down. Its not worth for 15$. 3. Kudos for the service: our server was wonderful regardless of things out of his control. It was decent, it came out warm and not hot but I can look past it. Good amount of tofu & wakame. The broth itself was a little salty but had a lot of flavor. The Kobe beef skewer was delicious, it was like butter; just melts in your mouth. It was tendered, fatty but not over the top & seasoned to perfection; Pink on the inside which was spot on. It was on the expensive side ($22) but worth every penny. This was by far one of the best quality beefs I've ever had. * Tuna nigiri- smelled a little fishy and wasn't that fresh. 2/5 * salmon nigiri- it was smooth and just melts in your mouth. 4.5/5 * unagi nigiri- fair. 2.5/5 * spicy tuna roll- good. 3.5/5 * California roll- simple. 2.5/5 * Crazy roll- very good. 4/5 * Spider roll- generous amount of crab meat. 4/5 My Katsu don was underwhelming and such an uninspiring dish. The cutlet was fried but had no crispness to it & tasted bland. I'm glad it was only 12 bucks because it was not good at all. Overall, it was a good experience. Their sake list is also excellent. Can't remember the name, but on our last visit we ordered the sake with the gold flakes and it was unbelievably smooth and paired perfectly with our meal. After several years away, I was thrilled to find some of my favorite items still on the menu, and I even dared to try a few seasonal items to compensate for the items gone. We came to Kata Robata to celebrate our anniversary, and it was everything we hoped for and more. This has been our favorite sushi restaurant in Houston for a while now, and once again, it blew us away. We came in at 5:15pm and were immediately seated with reservations and overheard a family of 3 walk in and also be seated. What made this visit especially memorable was our server, Kiet. He was fantastic... super friendly, really knew the menu inside and out, and made thoughtful recommendations that made our dinner feel extra curated and personal. His timing and attention were perfect throughout the night, and you could tell he genuinely cared about our experience. We'll definitely be asking for him again in the future. I've added some photos of the dishes we enjoyed: the seasonal crudo (I forgot the exact name, but it was phenomenal), beef carpaccio, the wagyu sando, and the blueberry cake with ice cream. This was our first time here. We heard good things about it, so we scheduled over a month in advance for my wife's birthday dinner. However we were so disappointed. We were under the impression this was a classy place like Uchi. We got there and they sat us next to this rowdy table. They did move to the back which was a little quieter, but the server was very inattentive. It took 30 minutes to get drinks. We did an appetizer but took another 30 minutes to get to our first sushi dish. He said he would help us with the menu but never really gave us the attention. The food was mediocre. We could have gotten the same quality at another restaurant cheaper and with better service. Maybe our expectations were too high. We should have gone to Uchi. Went for lunch with family and had a fantastic experience. The restaurant is busy but it was easy to get a same day reservation. It was well-lit with rustic decor. We ordered a variety of things including the wagyu katsu sando, hamachi and jalapeño sashimi, the chicken skewers three ways, the pork belly and papaya salad, and the chef's sushi platter. We wrapped up with the tropical kakigori. Everything was amazing- the fish was fresh and tender, the wagyu sando a lovely classic bite (although a bit small), the chicken skewers juicy and tender with great flavors. The pork belly and papaya salad was an unexpected surprise, mixing a leaner cut of pork belly with fresh salad and dressing that worked really well, having a good umami flavor with a more sour and sweet salad. I probably wouldn't have gotten the kakigori again because even though the ice is imported directly from Japan, I am not fancy enough to tell the difference in ice and felt like the syrup was minimal. It didn't really have any fruit besides the syrups, although the yuzu cream was a really nice addition. Overall, this place is worth it. It's expensive for sure, but they have a lot of great options with a good mix of classic and non traditional items. Will definitely need to be back! read more

The regular menu prices are a bit on the high side, so unless you're celebrating a special occasion, I recommend taking advantage of their weekday lunch specials. We visited to celebrate a birthday! We made a reservation for when they opened at 12:00 PM and were promptly seated. All the food came out quickly. My favorite dish was the beef skewers; they were so delicious and tender that I didn't even have a chance to snap a photo before we devoured them. The foie gras and duck soba was also yummy, though a bit on the saltier side; the duck was particularly flavorful. The sando was tasty, but I'd choose the beef skewers over it any day. The octopus was good but not particularly memorable. The chef's sashimi plate was incredibly fresh, and everything on it was delightful. They even offered to fry the shrimp heads for us to enjoy! I tried a few new things: -Raw shrimp, which I found too slimy for my taste. -Fried shrimp heads--who knew you could eat those? I had a bite, and it was interesting! -Jalapeño on sushi, which was a bit too spicy for me, but it was fun to try, and the others enjoyed it. Was able to try a bit of the birthday girl's free dessert - opted for the blueberry cake. I appreciated that the the cake and the scoop of ice cream beside it were not overly sweet.
