This building caught my eye since I first moved to Houston and I was very satisfied after trying it for the first time recently. The building is very pretty and aesthetic. On a Sunday afternoon it took about 10 minutes for a spot to become available in the tight parking lot so I would probably come at a time that's less busy in this area. First review of 2019! Wow, and what better place to start than writing my first review based on my suggestions: The Rice Box at Greenway Plaza in Houston. I have been to this place a few times, mostly in my time working offsite at their nearby office building (5 Greenway Plaza). The Rice Box is nestled down on the lower floors of a cafeteria area surrounded by other restaurants, men and women in business casual clothing, TV's blaring the daily news and a cone shaped window looking up in the middle of a indoor courtyard. The Rice Box is a Chinese restaurant that I find to be ~alright~ for the most part. Being Asian myself, this place was about on par with other Chinese American restaurants in the Houston area (take Panda Express for example. This place and Panda Express is NOT authentic Chinese food). Nice atmosphere, great decor on the outside, nice friendly staff, but I was mostly here for the food. Will this food disappoint me or make me come back for more? That is the real question of the day. The food was... what I thought it would be. A lot of rice (and I mean a lot.), medium sized portions of protein, some veggies, and an eggroll. To be honest, not a bad price for the amount of food you get (it's like really heavy and really big). But, that container is filled with like 75% rice and 25% everything else. Get the portions right people! Other than that, 3/5, would come back if I am desperate... and there are like 6 other restaurants/places to eat in that lower concourse area, so there you go. read more

The portion size was also plentiful. The fried dumplings were fried a little too hard. They were hard and chewy but not horrible. This is the reason for the four stars. The service was very quick and efficient. The place looks amazing. Love the way they set it up with such a small area to work with. Love eating at greenway plaza because it was so much selection and a nice atmosphere. The food wasn't all that. The fried rice wasn't great and the pepper steak I order was so sweet and the carrots were undercooked. Will try a different plate next time and give an updated review. I got a nitro Thai tea and it was beyond amazing. Def recommend. The right about of sweetness too. It sort of looks like beer especially with the foam but it's non dairy so a great plus ! read more

One of my favorite Chinese dishes is chow-fun. Growing up in NYC we used to make late nite Chinatown runs to the noodle shops and chow down. You don't see chow fun here in TX so when I saw it on the rice box menu I was overjoyed, especially that I work in the building. Well the first time I tried to order it they were out, so I figured ok I will have the bok choy. The menu seems that you could customize your dishes but apparently not the Bok choy- the cashier insisted it ONLY comes with shrimp and cannot be changed. So I'm thinking if it can't be changed it has to be pre-made , and who wants that??? So I passed. Today I was more hungry than usual and took a walk downstairs to see if I could finally get some chow fun. This time they had it so I ordered it with chicken, but what a disappointment. This ain't Chinatown!! First off, I asked the (same) cashier to not add oil, he insisted (again) that they have to use oil, and felt the urge to let me know that Chinese food is not healthy at all but said will ask them to just use a little, I agreed. Well of course it came out super greasy, there was also a ton of sloppily cut green onion - way too much in proportion to the dish, way too little chicken - about 4 pieces of dark meat chunks, and wayyyyyyy too much salt, like it's 2 1/2 hours later, I feel light headed, my lips are parched, and still have a horrible taste of onion in my mouth. There's no love here. Welp anyway, wasted enough time and money on this place-I guess I will continue to go without chow fun until I go back to NY. read more

I came here during lunch twice. The concept is cute, where the meat is over the rice. Alittle pricey. 1st time I came here. I order the beef and broccoli. Almost $10. It may look like there's a lot of food but in reality it's a lot of rice and the beef and broccoli is on top. I had better else where. 2nd time - I had order the beef chow fun. Almost $13. Alittle on the greasy side but I like that they add shredded cabbage in it. Usually the traditional Chinese beef chow does not have cabbage in it. It taste pretty good. I was always curious about this place when I saw their other location in the Heights. The food exceeded my expectations. I got the sesame chicken and was amazed by it. The chicken was battered in a sweet and tangy sauce. The portion is generous and you get an eggroll too! It comes with white rice but you can substitute it with brown rice for an extra charge. I can only eat half of the chicken for lunch and saved the other half for dinner. (8/10) Another favorite is the fried chicken dumplings! The six dumplings are fried until golden. The chicken filling is moist and savory. Dip it in their house sauce and you will be begging for another one. You can also get the dumplings steamed which taste equally satisfactory. (9/10) Fried rice: Two different sizes Small ($4.99) and Large ($6.99). Then the protein add ons are extra. You can choose from shrimp, beef, chicken, and tofu (The prices range from $1-$3 extra for individual proteins. If you order a combo of the proteins then it will be more expensive). The fried rice is made of the protein(s), bean sprouts, eggs, and chives. The meal also comes with an eggroll and a fortune cookies. A small is VERY filling. It usually puts me to sleep so I always have to wake myself up with some coffee or tea afterwards. The overall flavor is magnificent and is one of my favorite places to get fried rice. (8/10) Nitro Thai Tea: If you're lactose intolerant but is craving for a thai tea, then Rice Box created something special for you! Using some sort of black magic, they were able to infuse the tea with a charge of nitrogen to give the top head of the tea a rich and creamy blend without the diary addictive. It looks like a nitro draft beef (like Guinness) but is actually a nitro thai tea!!! So refreshing! (9/10) This location is located inside one of the parking garages for Greenway Plaza so just keep that in mind. This place was a little difficult to find, but I was determined to try this place!! I parked in the greenway underground garage which charged me $2.00 between 2 min to 60 minutes. I walked inside and came across a concourse of different types of vendors, bbq, Mediterranean, and the tie box to name a few. They have a full menu, with a small sit down bar with about four seats. The host can't handle it, the guy who looks like the owner/manager has to come out. I was in the middle of the pack when ordered. Turns out they - Forgot to make 2 of the orders - Did not even ring up one of the guys order So as he is getting to the end of the list, I checked with the person who ringed up the order. He still claims it's coming out. Everyone gets their order except 3 of us. Asked the manager again. He rudely begins telling us, did you even order, are you on this list, I said 'the guy who ringed up is right there he just confirmed '. He angrily starts responding, what did you order we don't have you here. At this point after waiting an hour, I am already very frustrated to the point of canceling my order and going some where else. I said it's on the list and my names is on there. He keeps responding Rudely and angrily. Finally gets the order made and keeps shouting - What do you want- Fork or Chop sticks. Such an attitude. Turns out they did not even start on friends order. He still continues to wait there for much longer. I understand the stress of the lunch hour rush, but if you make a mistake and mess up or worse don't even make a customers order and make them wait more than an hour for it. Own it up. Let them know it was a mistake and get their order ready. Do not be extra rude to them or be angry at them cause you can't manage a place. read more

I don't mind a little scrambled eggs but the fried rice had so many eggs in it I wondered if I got fried rice with egg or fried eggs with rice.
