Writing this on behalf of my mom who isn't a Yelper. She went here today for lunch with a friend and found a PILL baked into her zucchini bread!! WHAT THE ACTUAL ... She spit it out immediately and notified the manager. They said the chef who makes the bread wasn't in but they'd speak with him tomorrow. That's pretty scary that she could have ingested something that interacts with her own medications and this could have turned very bad. Scary stuff! The manager gave her 50% off her meal. I truly think they could have done more and should follow up with her. What if the ingredients leached into the bread while being cooked AND or what if someone intentionally put it in there AFTER it was cooked! read more

A sort of upscale diner. The food was prepared well. The only exception was my friend's steak was not rare as he had ordered. The poached salmon was prepared exactly the way I like it The service is very good and the were very attentive. I would dine here again. read more

Kathleen's is one of my favorite places in LA. I found it when I had just relocated from chicago a couple years ago. Kathleen has always been SO welcoming to me. She greets me & my friends with a smile & a hug each time we come in & I feel very at home here. The one dollar mimosas are unbeatable !! & the food (seriously anything on the menu) is delicious always. My favorite are the homemade soups they make each day. For breakfast I recommend the French toast or Chorizo. But again- you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. This place is a disappointment on so many levels. OK, it might not be a disappointment on very many levels, but its level of disappointment on even one or two levels helps level its rating from a high three stars to a solid two stars. Did I use "level" enough in that sentence? Sorry, I tried my level best. Judging purely from the entrance from the rear parking lot, Kathleen's is an amazing place. I don't know whether you grew up with great aunts who knew everything there was to know about non-sheeshy, non-Beverly Hills fine dining in L.A., but if you did, the back entrance to Kathleen's holds a lot of promise. There's this weird juxtaposition of ivy-lined-brick and dumpy-parking-lot elements. Yes, I realize a dumpy parking lot may not seem impressive, but in L.A. it can be a sign of a fine dining experience to come. The first time I came here, we parked in the back, and we were with my great aunt, so I was expecting a classy place. I knew I probably wouldn't like the food, but that would be OK because the place's Hansel-and-Gretel-house interior would make up for it, right? Wrong. When you come inside, you realize this is just a plain old diner. There's nothing wrong with that, and I don't want to belabor the point any more than I already have, but the interior is a disappointment. The food is all right. It's not bad, but it's not great either. That's also disappointing because underwhelming-looking diners often have really great food. The prices are also slightly ridiculous. I did enjoy my time here because I got to hear a really interesting story about my great grandfather that I had never heard before--which is amazing when you consider how many times I've heard all the stories of my ancestors--and the service is pretty good, but that's about it. This is a very relaxed restaurant with excellent comfort food and some specials that are somewhat above the ordinary. For example, I love their Eggs Benedict and they do a variation with sliced salmon. There are some excellent Mexican dishes, a lot of traditional American sandwiches and dishes, a few French entrees and very generous salads. In fact all the portions are generous. If you're there on a Sunday, ask for the "dollar mimosa." They'll smile and bring you one. They're nice people. read more

I so wanted to love Kathleen's. It used to be so good! The whole place smells like disinfectant. Blueberry pancakes were not good at all. They were covered in a thick, blueberry compote with no blueberries in the pancakes themselves. Service was mediocre and prices were too high. read more

Kathleen's has been on my radar since it opened 30 years ago, and I swear I've been going there ever since. I usually go for lunch, and have always been happy with the food and the service. The location on North Lake Avenue is away from the hustle and bustle of Old Town Pasadena, so it's much easier to park and avoid the large crowds, for the most part. I see this place a little higher on the chain than some other reviewers who call it a diner. I'd say it's more like a family-run restaurant with a casual ambience. The food is consistently fresh, well prepared, and always good. I like that their menu offers so many options, from Mexican to Middle Eastern to a good old cheeseburger. You can even have an omelet for lunch! My favorite is the chicken salad, which consists of a large serving of shredded chicken salad mixed with a slight amount of mayo and slivered almonds on top of greens with fresh fruit and hard boiled eggs. You don't even need dressing. All the salads are accompanied by your choice of pumpkin or zucchini bread that will remind you of home baked family recipes. Their tuna melt is also tasty and perfectly prepared, and their kabobs are a specialty. Kathleen is there every time I've ever gone to her restaurant. It's nice to see an owner so enthusiastic about making sure she's visible and that her customers and staff are happy. And speaking of the staff, I've seen the same faces there for a long time. Whenever you frequent a restaurant and see servers who like their jobs enough to never leave, I think it speaks volumes. I always look forward to my visits to Kathleen's! read more

Not only did we have great service provided by Robin as well as the owner Kathleen who runs around helping bus the tables, the food was FAB. I loved my Fresh Berry Salad special of the day which included charbroiled chicken breast, blue cheese crumbles, and vinaigrette dressing. I'm trying to eat healthier - so no omelet this time. And, my wife had a very tasty (done to her specifications) ham and cheese omelet that had cheese on the inside and out with broccoli added - just the way she likes it. And, the potatoes where well done just as she requested. Now, let's not forget the $1 mimosas. This is only a few of the reasons we travel 30 minutes to go for brunch on a regular basis. read more

What a sweet little gem! My friend and I came here for breakfast and it was delish. I didn't expect this to be trendy, considering its location, but I was proven wrong and I am glad I was. I ordered the pancake special and I got eggs and sausage; everything was fresh even the coffee. They also serve Mexican fair, which was good since my friend practically cleaned her plate. The table we sat at was tiny so keeping all the dishes on was challenging. I am not a fan of the circular chairs because they are not comfortable at all. Based on some of the reviews, it is true that quite a few seniors patron this establishment, but I have no problem with that. I will probably be back for another round. read more

I'm not usually wary when trying out new breakfast spots, but after having breakfast at Kathleen's, I will be. The question is, how can a restaurant screw up breakfast? Dairy, cheeses, pancakes, toasts, coffee, juice, meats...it's not that difficult. Any combination of those ingredients could net an amazing meal. But not here. My husband and I ordered the croissant french toast and regular french toast, respectively. Or at least, that's what we were told. What we both ACTUALLY ate were two plates of nothing. No flavor other than overwhelming cinnamon. We actually put salt on our breakfasts to attempt to bring out some flavor. But wait, shouldn't maple syrup help? Ideally, but this maple syrup was runny and tasted like water. The eggs tasted like nothing. The coffee tasted like NOTHING. Even the bacon was blah. Speaking of blah, the restaurant looks cute on the outside, but is dark and depressing on the inside. Dark, grey walls with no decor. A good hearty breakfast is the foundation of a good day, but a bad breakfast does nothing for you but relieve you of some money and put you in a bad mood. read more

While I was still in the workforce we'd every now and then pick up lunch there. I'd always get the chicken salad croissant sandwich which came with fruit and unique potato salad. Was here with my GF during the week and partook of some very tasty fish 'n chips. Service was fast, efficient, and attentive. From what I could tell they do serve breakfast but only do that on the weekends. I've lived here all of my life and never noticed the place before. We passed it twice. It blends into the surroundings. I did notice that some of the elderly clientele are regulars, so this is one of those Conrad's type pf places. Oh, and the pumpkin bread was very good. Kathleen's is a cozy, relaxed, wonderful place, a place that I look forward to returning to, every year. My wife and I have been coming here for about 10 years, when we attend the Southwest Chamber Music festival. The food and service are excellent. I strongly recommend the salmon salad with pumpkin bread, and a glass of Merlot; you'll think you've gone to heaven!!!!!!! And, they always make us a fresh pot of coffee. Don't tell Starbuck's - the best coffee in Pasadena is at Kathleen's. And no loud music to ruin an excellent meal, with your favorite person in the world. read more

LOVED THIS PLACE. Definitely going to be back. My boyfriend and I came to eat across the street for brunch yesterday, but it was way to packed and no park in sight. So we went across the street (Kathleen's) and parked to think about where we were going to park. Then my boyfriend asked the guy working valet at Kathleen's if they had brunch/breakfast, and he said yeah! So we said well why not try Kathleen's instead! And we didn't regret a thing! We walked in and took one short look at the menu and knew we'd enjoy it. A big plus! Mimosas were first round $1 and after that one round only $2! We each got two mimosas and two meals for only $30. The bathrooms were clean and so cute! And I really enjoyed the vibe here. Can't wait to go back!! read more

The meh: Plain Belgian waffle for $9.50. The waffle was fine, but come one... Service is ok, not great The disappointing: Feel like I'm dining at a retirement home The interior is blah, which probably contributed to the retirement home feeling. Overall, a good experience. I went here with a friend who is a regular here and was not impressed. The only windows are the ones that are in the front. Most of the restaurant is dark. The food is pricey for what you are getting. The decor sucks. The waitress was not friendly - only after my friend spoke to her about tattoos did she open up at all. None of the staff smiles, they are all gloomy and it is a little creepy. I ordered the mushroom, tomato, avo omlette and no where was it written that cheese would be all over it. So I didn't even know to say, no cheese! When it came what could I say? I don't want cheese but it wasn't written in the menu so how could I have known to tell you I don't want cheese??? So annoying. I think Amy's Patio Cafe just down the street is so much better. I won't be coming here again. read more

NEVER AGAIN. Waste of money! the decor; drab and dark the staff; leaning and watching the customers eat the customers; well I about lost my breakfast when the perfume soaked blue hair was placed in the booth behind me. NEVER NEVER NEVER Again!!! Go to Brookside for a morning breakfast... don't waste your time here... For Dinner, you'll spend less money at the Le Grande Orange (Del Mar station off the Gold Line) and have a much much better dinner. This place is just a joke. GTFO! read more

Outstanding Service -- Kathleen herself helps wait tables. The food is very good, and I recommend that you try it for dinner or lunch. This is one of the last remaining "traditional" American restaurants in the area -- it kind of reminds me of the old PepperMill Restaurant which is now gone. If you are looking for trendy "fusion" food, this is not your place. They also make their own delicious homemade bread loafs (Pumpkin-Walnut or Zucchini-Nut Bread) which you can order as an appetizer, and if you are into healthy foods I recommend the Crudites appetizer (basically a raw veggie tray with dip). It's a nice change from the typical "fried zucchini sticks" that other restaurants serve for appetizers. Also, don't miss the Homemade Pineapple Cheesecake for dessert! It's true, the inside of the building is a little dated, but it's clean and the food is fresh, so go try it! read more

Kathleen's looks so inviting from the front: overgrown ivy with a English feel, even though it's on busy Lake Street. When you walk inside, though, the ambiance changes completely. It's sort of a mid-80s purple and grey, chrome and smoked glass look. You expect Nagel prints and someone with a Flock of Seagulls hairstyle to be hanging around. The food was ok. I had a hankering for Mexican food, which turned out to be the most affordable offering on the menu. I was surprised that the pricing wasn't a better value, given the rather outdated look of the interior. My dish was reasonable, though I did not feel that it was a good value. Overall, I may go back for cocktails or desserts. Some friends have told me that they like to go there for weekend lunch, but unless someone asks me to stop there, it's unlikely that I'd make it a regular stop. A shame really, since it's a convenient restaurant with parking behind it and on the street. I would just rather have a more enjoyable ambiance for the price paid. read more

Came during dinner time and the place was nearly empty. I had the avocado and bacon burger and it was so-so. Bacon was a bit burnt and the fries on the side were definitely burnt. I think they were trying to do a gourmet style, but it wasn't worth over $10 for me. The interior is a bit outdated with the seats sinking in. It could use a bit of renovation to draw in a younger crowd. I might come back but this time to try their breakfast menu. I'm a huge waffle fan, so if I do come back, I hope their waffles taste amazing. read more

Wow! We've been there a number of times with our dear Aunt. Food and staff was always great.Kathleen was incredibly gracious to let our large family use her banquet room for a Celebration of Life for our mom ( our aunts sister). Even though there was a large number of us we all were very impressed with the staff and Kathleen. She let us stay and visit until we were ready to leave. I guess a free meal is not enough for some. read more

Kathleen's. I wish I could give this place more stars. As my grandmother really loved this place. She even requested that our family meet there after her funeral. Which we did. Her children rented out the back room (the grape room) and had pictures and a video slide show. It was a beautiful day of friends and family coming together to celebrate a beautiful person. Everything was ok. Until I was walking out. And I decided to take a flower from the vase ...a little symbol of my grandmother If you will. I was going to put it under my pillow and hopefully have a dream of her. But Kathleen ,the owner, literally chased me down into the parking lot and asked for "her" flower back. And acted insulted. It was incredibly bizarre to me. How incredibly tacky. I just came from my grandmas funeral. We had a gathering at your restaurant because she loved it there so much. It was so cheap and tacky. I really couldn't process it at the moment. Such a lack of kindness and empathy. I will never go back there again. Honestly... what is wrong with people. I really can't understand how someone could act that way... it wasn't like we didn't pay her for renting out the room. I just lost my grandmother. And your going to chase me down and treat me like I "stole" your flower? Honestly. It is shocking to me. Such an unkind act... on a day of mourning. It's actually quite shocking.
