We have been traveling up and down the east coast, eating at several places along the way. This place was our favorite restaurant by far! I ordered Aunt Joyce's favorite with a side of warm apples and sausage gravy on biscuits. My dreams came true with this meal! The side of warm apples were perfect for this comfort food dish. My bf ordered the apple pancakes and I didn't hear from him until they were gone. The only thing he said was "taste this butter". Clearly he loved every bit of his meal. Extremely disappointed in our visit. Our bad for going on a Sunday. We were prepared to go elsewhere if the wait was too long. Person at the counter said 10 minutes for a table despite the people everywhere and yes, we were only waiting about that long to be seated. However, once seated it took 45 minutes to get out breakfast items. If the food was amazing, I would probably given an extra star but it was not. My husband's egg over easy's yolk was hard, dry French toast, and nothing special eggs Benedict with dismal home fries. Waitress was apologetic for the wait due to staff shortage, understandable to an extent. Coffee refills were plenty and pretty good, had a decent caffeine buzz by the end of the ordeal. The place was packed inside; staff and patrons do not mask. Perhaps not filling the place and only seat who you can serve in a reasonable amount of time and ensure quality of product would be a good solution. We were here about 5 years ago and it was really good. Hope this place figures out how to operate better again. read more

From fun family breakfast tradition to never again. Our family - grandparents, nieces, nephews - would come for breakfast. Huge portions and very good! However, none of us will be back again, and it all comes down to service - specifically the owner's daughter. Now my father goes there so often, several staff know his name. He called in a to-go order: hamburger with no side. When he picked it up, they brought a burger and fries. Again stated he didn't want a side because it would be thrown away - he's a stickler on food waste. The server took the box back and brought him just the burger. She even gave him a discount since he didn't order the fries. And this should have been the end to the story - mistake made and fixed. Period. HOWEVER a woman, identified as Kathy's daughter, broke into the conversation as she was at the counter and overheard. She was exceptionally rude when responding to my 81 yo dad. The conversation was definitely over when she told him to "get on out of here you a**hole! And don't come back. We don't want people like you here!" Well, Kathy's daughter, you got your wish. He won't be back. Neither will the rest of the family. And we're sharing how the owner's daughter cussed at and basically threw my elderly father out for asking a question. Bye Kathy's. Known for their breakfast, we wanted to try Kathy's buckwheat pancakes. They were big and nutty and better with fruit and syrup. Enjoyed the trout and green beans immensely and will come back to have this again. The French fries were slightly undercooked and had a bit of freezer-flavor. The upbeat country music was heard from the kitchen and clashed with the ambient music in the dining area. We were seated in a booth in the cacophony area where both are heard. Next time, we will ask for the back room. Kathy's has a 'diner' ambiance and has tables for large groups in the back room. It has been around a long time. My friends and I we're on our way back home to Virginia Beach after celebrating New Years in the mountains. I spotted this place and didn't even look it over, just shot from the hip, and I'm glad I did! All four of us knew the place would be excellent when we pulled up and the entire lot was full. It warmed my heart once I stepped in. I have a soft spot for diner style spots. (What my older brother and I called a "Greasy Spoon" in our younger days). This place had so much charm! They have pictures up on the wall about a Coffee Club from when it was first opened. In the 50's. It was like stepping back in time. Browsing the menu made me feel at home. My eyes widened and my mouth salivated as I browsed the selections. I've grown fond of Benedict's lately because they take more skill than the usual breakfast food to create. So, I went with Benedict's Cousin! It was some warm fluffy biscuits with some benedict style eggs hidden under the cloud of levitating gravy. The gravy was so thick it could practically stand up on its own. The red skin hash browns were cooked just right. It's like a dream of a breakfast meal was presented to me. I couldn't wait to dig in! The first bite... I was immediately sad. The reason, because it was delicious, made me feel at home, took my mind and body somewhere peaceful, and I knew it would be gone too soon. Like seeing a loved one move away from home, the food found its new place in my body, visiting my tastebuds on their way and leaving their mark on my mind and heart. Dear cousin, you'll be missed. Ok so this place has been voted the best breakfast place in town for 7 years. The service is 5 star. The food is extremely pedestrian. We ordered bacon and eggs and pancakes and an order of biscuits and gravy. My wife ordered the lemon blueberry pancakes. First the eggs and bacon were nothing to talk about. Very ok. The pancakes although good were not special. The biscuits and gravy were again ok not great. My wife ordered the lemon blueberry pancakes. Thought it would be special. It was special alright. The pancakes were covered with a lemon curd and an extreme amount of it. But it tasted like a bad lemon pie filling. Sorry but maybe we ordered wrong. Stopped at Kathy's after driving from Richmond after reading reviews about 1 pm on Saturday, October 7. Waited to be seated. Kathy advised us to sit wherever we wanted so we did. We sat for 10 minutes waiting. NO one made eye contact with us or served us. Watched as other folks came in were seated and waited on. We watched as a wait staff filled maple syrup containers, made small talk with tables near us. Watched Kathy herself walk around and checked on people. I don't know if it was because my friend is African American. I've never in my life been treated so rudely and been ignored by so many in one little diner. Terrific food! Plentiful portions. They are a breakfast and lunch restaurant only, so come before 3pm. We went on a Sunday around noon and they were very crowded. We had a short wait for a table. Looks like they have a lot of staff but it took a long time for our waitress to come over and take our order. Fortunately we were not in a hurry but if you are in a hurry, this may not be your place. They are known for their pancakes. My husband got pancakes covered with strawberries and cream with sausage and grits and it said it was really very good, I ordered French toast--absolutely awesome--with oatmeal and country ham. The ham slice was quite large with a bone (they do not have a small portion as a side) so I took half home. They have breakfast items, sandwiches and entrees and lots of sides that you might eat for dinner but they do close daily at 3pm. This is a diner like place, casual, and there is a counter. I think a lot of locals go there. It's a friendly atmosphere. I honestly think it is some of the best breakfast food I have eaten, although the ham was fairly thick and a little tough, so perhaps that was not the best country ham I have ever had (Waffle House has fantastic country ham) but it was still very good. Prices are reasonable for a diner type of restaurant. I wish we lived in the area but we were only passing through (we live about 2.5 hours away) so we may not visit there again in the near future but if we lived in Staunton, I would say we would eat there quite often. Fantastic food, you can't go wrong here. Just be prepared to allow plenty of time to get your meal. We will absolutely eat here again when back in the area. read more
