This is by far the worst sushi I've ever had in my entire life! Me being from Hawaii and having visited Japan, I can truly say that I've had traditional sushi all my life. The sushi from Albertsons and the commissary tastes way better than what this "Japanese" sushi restaurant serves! For the price we paid for Ebi nigiri sushi $5.50 each piece (ordered 2 for $11 total) it was a total rip off! This was not served with sushi rice. There was no taste to the rice. It was just "plain rice"! It was bad!! My husband's fried rice was expensive for a small little portion with not much taste. The dragon roll that we ordered didn't even look like a dragon roll. That was just like a California maki with shrimp on it, and yet again, no sushi rice just plain white rice. There was no dipping sauce for the gyoza, which was sad, so I used unagi sauce just for taste because the gyoza didn't have much flavor. Our waitress was nice in the beginning, but never checked up on us after she gave us our food. We had to look for her and wait to ask for refills on our drinks. We asked for a container at the same time, and I had to stand up and go over to her to ask for our check because she didn't bring it or ask if we needed it. Don't think I'll ever come here again. Food quality was bad, service could be better, and prices need to change for the quality and amount of food that you are serving! When sitting down after being asked what drink we wanted, it took 5-10 minutes to get our drinks. After getting them we ordered our food while in the middle of ordering our server made us wait so he can grab and notepad to write our orders down. Finally getting to complete what we wanted to order it took over an hour almost two get our food. seeing that our first order was sushi it was left there for a awhile sitting at there sushi bar under a light for over 20-30 minutes. We had seen our server on the phone, and cooks at the sushi bar just standing around talking to each other. After waiting about 1 hour just about 2 they finally brought us our food. taking 3-4 people to bring our food to us. When sitting down we were only brought with two chopsticks but thankful i always keep portable chopsticks on me and only had brought us two napkins. It's not a COVID thing because they give you physical menus for the drinks, but no prices, no pictures and someone made it on Microsoft word. Just black and white. 3. No Wi-Fi. They want you to use internet to see the menu, but don't offer internet. They tease you with the Katsura Wi-Fi name there, but nope. 4. My nigiri was bad. So thin it was almost see through. The salmon had skin...I don't even know what to say. 5. Ordered a sushi roll, I didn't know barbecue sauce was even a thing with sushi. It didn't mix well with the cream cheese inside. 5a. The ginger was thicker than the sushi, which made the ginger terrible overall. 6. No free refills or waitress never offered us any. I think the lemon aid said no free refills . 7. $3 for using your credit card. No matter the price. $3 dollars. 8. We spent $70 for the worst lunch experience. Ambience was terrible. I took my little one here with me and she got the chicken skewer and rice. She kept saying that it was sooo good. We got calamari for an appetizer and it was not good, it was spicy and too salty. I felt like they overcooked it so i wont be getting that next time. I got the bermudez roll and I totally loved it! Their miso soup was really good and it has good flavor. I sure hope that by the time I'm done posting this review, I am able to bump up the average rating for this place from 2 stars to at least...3 or so. Because the previous reviewers of this place who gave them 1 star seriously ought to consider scheduling themselves for a cranial nerve exam! So this is the sushi bar my wife recommended to me and the same one I was trying to locate the other day, but ended up at Makoto instead. Hands down...Katsura is TWICE the sushi joint that Makoto is. Let's talk menu. This place already has the advantage over the first one I tried due to the fact that they actually serve other items besides sushi. The Ramen soup (as pictured) is excellent! It's SO good, in fact, that it reminded me of the Ramen I used to enjoy at Susaki before they were inexplicably shut down. It consists of chicken and Ramen in beef broth with green onions. Exquisite! Before we could enjoy our Ramen though, they brought out the sushi. My wife ordered the Favorite roll (yes, that's what it's actually called) and although I asked for a California Shrimp roll, I'm fairly certain the waiter brought me a regular California roll instead. Whatever. I was feeling too adventurous and was too hungry to give a crap at this point. We quickly discovered why it's called the "Favorite Roll". This sushi beat the pants off the California roll (which I'll get to in a bit). Solid 10! 5 stars all around. Yada yada yada. Now, the biggest problem I had with the California roll (aside from the fact that the whole thing looked as if it was about to fall apart in my chopsticks) was the fact that it was incredibly dry. Keep in mind, I made NO modifications to this roll what so ever. So it was served as it normally is. I was expecting more with the filler. But it seemed to consist of crab meat with a few veggies, avocado and...that's about it. No sauce, other than the Japanese spicy mayo that we ordered on the side. This roll could have used some soy or masago. I dunno. Something seemed incredibly bland about this particular roll, especially in comparison to the Favorite roll we got. Anyway, the Favorite roll (which ended up being our favorite. ooooh!! see what I did there?), we ended up ordering two more of those to go so we could enjoy them later. Honestly, I was already pretty stuffed from the Ramen soup when all was said and done. The service was actually WAY better than previous patrons described. The waiter was very attentive. Almost....annoyingly so. But we were one of four customers there at the time, since it was fairly early in the day. So I only have a couple theories about the reviews preceding mine.. 1.) Since it's fairly obvious that most of the negative reviews for this place date back to 2014 and earlier, I can only assume they were operating underneath different management and/or had different chefs working in the back. So it's very possible that at one point, the quality of food here was as abysmal as some claim. Dismissing all that, however, I'll bet it's more like.. 2.) More than a handful of the negative reviews left for this place came from folks who either don't usually post reviews on a regular basis or, worse....only have 1 review underneath their profile and this is it. It's like they created a Yelp account for the sole purpose of bashing some sushi joint they didn't agree with. Because....reasons. I dunno...that just seems more like trolling to me. All I know is I had almost no problems with this place, except for the one sushi roll being kind of a let down. But you can't even really hold that against them anyway because honestly, not every sushi roll is for every person. Overall: we will most definitely be returning here and I might even leave an updated review at some point in the future. I feel like this place should have a much higher average rating. I plan to open a discussion thread recommending this place to other Yelpers. Maybe then, Katsura Sushi will receive the more accurate reviews it deserves. read more

DON'T waste your money. A lot of the pictures for this place are way better than what you will get. First off they do not understand how to roll sushi, there are pieces with a ton of cream cheese and no crab. When sushi is rolled you lay all of the ingredients down evenly in a line and then roll it so when it's cut you get even amounts of ingredients. Second there's no flavor really and barely any crab or shrimp. The only thing I could taste is cream cheese. Lastly the price for what you get is not great, but the size of the rolls is adequate. I had a California shrimp roll and panko roll but it was straight breading for the panko roll not panko flakes and it was sweet and not crunchy. My husband got the spicy tuna roll and the pieces of tuna are great but it's just a solid piece not tuna mixed with spicy mayo. The regular California roll was okay, just the same problem with how it was rolled. I'm sorry I have to leave such a bad review, but please at least learn how to roll sushi. read more

My wife wanted sushi and it was nearby so we decided to give it a try. Big expensive mistake. The service was good and the gyoza was tasty, but everything else was underwhelming or just plain bad. We both love miso soup and we both didn't finish it. The miso soup was so watered down. We ordered beef teriyaki and had two bites and immediately asked for a to go box. For a place with Sushi Bar in its name, the food that comes out is a terrible representation of the quality one would expect for the namesake. Expect long wait times and confused staff sending out orders to the wrong tables, and then charging extraneous items for all that and more even if people didn't get their food in a THREE hour wait time, which is just asinine. Their ticket system supposedly has difficulty separating large orders at once and thus expect to wait at least an hour for the staff to get it straightened out. tldr; a bottom of the barrel eatery not worthy to be designated as a sushi bar. I heard from a friend this place was good and I've been desperate to find decent sushi in El Paso, so I paid no mind to the yelp reviews. Big mistake. I ordered the Alan Special Roll, which was supposed to be rice, avocado, tempura shrimp, cream cheese and crab paste. It was "breaded" and I asked the manager if it was tempura style she confirmed that it was. The roll was 90% rice and the breaking was not tempura or crispy at all. It just added more carbs to the already overloaded roll. It took 20 minutes to get my Togo food in an empty restaurant. I should've known better when a white girl who looked like Miley Cyrus was their sushi chef. That just ain't right.... Restaurant was clean and miso was average but all and all for 14 bucks I will not be returning to Katsura for another rice roll. read more

The service took too long for 2 drinks(teas). Sushi was bland tasting and avocado on the sushi was not fresh. The meal for 2 rolls and a "yakamesi" came out 30mins later. We literally timed it. Dislikes: Rice didn't stay together very well, soy sauce seemed watered down not like low sodium or regular, I've had both. Sushi by the piece is $2.95. No simple shrimp tempura roll, no ginger, hot green tea is $3.50 apiece and yellow tail is hamachi not hamashi lol. Likes: I may have a lot of dislikes, but being from NY I'm used to sushi with a Japanese theme not a Mexican one. The food, as little as we got was good. The hot green to was also good and hot. A friend recommended this place with very good feedback so I decided to try it. Honestly, it did not exceed my expectations. I can say that I've had better sushi. The only I thing I enjoyed the most was the appetizer. I had the fry dumplings and it was very good. Now as for the sushi it was so-so. I ordered the Las Vegas. Waiter comes back and ask or our order, no water... needed to be reminded after about 5-10mins. Received food without any utensil's, needed to be reminded. Sushi was given without wasabi or ginger, I've never been to a sushi restaurant that didn't offer it, even in traditional sushi restaurants. I know sushi is meant to be eaten the way it it served but the ambience, quality, and ability of the sushi chef did not call for tradition. Sushi, was not good quality. Fish was definitely not fresh. Rice was mushy... they must've put too much water when they cooked it. Leftover scraps of food on the plate, I guess they didn't wash the dishes well. It took 10mins to pay the bill. Wait time to pay the bill was waaaaay too long. There were 3 party's eating at the time (including mine). There was a waiter for each table so I don't understand why it took too long. Service: very good - I ordered Katsura combination it was total of 6 small slices of sashimi Sake (salmon) and Maguro (tuna) and hamachi (yellow tail) - 8 pieces of nigiri sushi Sake (salmon), Maguro (tuna) Tsurimi and unagi I like my unagi warm and this was completely cold our of the refrigerator. Presentation was very good - I had to ask the waiter for some wasabi and ginger at no cost, but I guess the waiter forgot to bring it when he brought my plate out. Taste of rice was fair freshness of the fish ok. Don't go without a reservation simply because they take forever to seat you, even when plenty of tables are available. Staff is prompt to offer drinks upon entering but take too long to serve the food. We had a small-medium party, one of our members asked for a simple salad and took 45-50 minutes to get his dish. Seems like people from El Paso don't know anything about Japanese food. Overall, awful food and a pathetic attempt at Japanese cuisine. I had to ask to be served ginger, wasabi, and soy sauce (standard at any actual Japanese restaurant). The soy sauce had the consistency of bbq sauce and was given to me in a squeeze bottle. I did not get anything to pour the disgusting sauce in. They also don't give cups or mugs for beer. Drank it straight out the bottle. The beer is listed in pictures on a tacky wine menu. No prices are displayed. The staff member who served me did not know anything about the food or the prices of beverages. Our appetizer was forgotten and served after our entrees. The sushi was disgusting and partly premade. They don't serve tuna rolls or salmon rolls. Yikes. Mostly imitation meat and low quality ingredients, but high prices. Disgrace of a restaurant. We ordered the vegetable tempura as an appetizer. It was ok, a little bland. They do give big pieces of veggies though. The miso soup was REALLY bland. It tasted like they added a lot of water. I had to put some soy sauce to give it a little taste. I ordered a California roll and chicken yakimeshi, and it tasted like they added too much Worcestershire sauce in the chicken yakimeshi.
