I came here with a friend this morning. in town for our High School reunion. the place we originally intended to go had a huge line so we figured we'd try this place. i had eggs Benedict Maui which was clever and pretty good. Disappointed that they only have regular coffee, so I opted for hot tea. $4 for a tea bag And some hot water. I really ought to know better. I couldn't finish my meal and neither could my friend, which makes it even more dismaying that you can't order a smaller portion and they don't even allow you to do a split plate. Food waste. What a shame. So, yeah, I certainly would never go back here and all of our classmates, plus all the classmates from all of my sibling's classes, as well as all of my mothers classmates will know why. And our server barely spoke to us, checked on us once, and never said hello or goodbye, either. Then to top it all off, they take CASH ONLY. I don't know about most people, but when I'm traveling, I rarely carry wads of money around. Sure, little bits to tip the bellhop, and the airport shuttle driver, but that's about it! This is used to be one of our favorite, go-to places when visiting Carmel. We've been coming here for years, and this past month, we were very disappointed in our experience. We got there 20 min. after they opened on a Thursday. * Slow service * Coffee for two was $12 -- and the refills took forever (when the restaurant was about 35% full) * Menu prices have gone through the roof -- the eggs benedict I ordered was ok, but my partner ordered two poached eggs and some melon * $7 for a side of berries! * For two people, our bill was over $85. I have lived on the Monterey Peninsula since 1963, and lived in Carmel for several years. I've heard that Katy's Place rivals my favorite Carmel place (The Little Swiss Cafe). I was in Carmel on a Saturday, so The Little Swiss had a long line., This seemed a good time to give this place a try. The first sign I saw was 'CASH ONLY'. That policy irks me. It makes me think that they don't want to pay the credit card fees and/or it's a great way to hide cash. Hello? Most people pay with Debit or Credit Cards (especially if you're a tourist) and even Apple Pay! Yes, The Little Swiss takes credit cards. The menu has more rules, NO SPLIT CHECKS. Sheesh. I asked our unfriendly server if they do half orders of Eggs Benedict (The Little Swiss does). He shook his head "no". By now, I'm irritated with this place. So I ordered eggs, potatoes and toast fo $18.00. The toast came ice cold so I got to butter it that way. One more ding. Our service was slow and not in the least bit warm or friendly. Still the best breakfast place in town. Bring CASH - they don't accept credit cards. Lines on weekends, immediate seating during the week. Late breakfast on Monday - no wait lines, great omelette and eggs-benedict. Nonstop coffee service. Friendly knowledgeable wait staff. Recommend by a police officer I spoke to, Katy's place did not disappoint. We walked over to Katy's place after the parade today for brunch. The place was packed but was able to sit us quickly. Typical to the Carmel by the sea style it's super cozy and low key in side. I ordered the crab benedict it comes with home potato wedges. The Benedict has spinach, 3 Poached Eggs hollandaise sauce and of course English muffins. One poached egg was not runny (Sad face) but the flavors are very good. Wifey had homemade corned beef hash Benedict. Let me tell you that was excellent and it also came with country potatoes (lots of food) The service was vary good and surprisingly fast for the quality of food they gave us. If you find yourself in Carmel I would definitely give them a shot. read more

I like their food, and the portion size is HUGE. However, everything is grossly overpriced (even for Carmel), and I think this place is overrated. My favorite here is the Dungeness Crab Benedict. They are generous with the crab meat, and the portion size is huge, but I think $21.95 is excessive. Their coffee is terrible. The liveliness during the breakfast/brunch hours and the Dungeness Crab Benedict are the only reason for me to keep coming back here. CASH ONLY. It should not be a big deal, but, if breakfast for two easily costs over $50, you may end up having to run to an ATM, like my girlfriend and I do almost every time as we forget about their cash only policy (she even grew up in Carmel!). It's a fun place for sure. Today is my husband's birthday and as we are spending a few days in Carmel, we decided to have breakfast at Katy's. Though the entrees are a bit expensive, you really get your money's worth. My husband ordered the Maine lobster Benedict and loved every bite. It was loaded with huge chunks of lobster. The couple at the table next to us commented that it was their favorite breakfast item. While they were enjoying their breakfast, the man was raving about his Benedict with truffled Hollandaise sauce. He said the sauce was so good he could drink it! The only accept cash payment. 2. the servers are not intuitive, you need to get their attention and then tell them every little thing you need. 3. The food is specialty priced but diner delivered. French toast was 20 dollars and there was nothing that quantified that price. It was just diner triangles on a plate. Coffee is diner coffee and is 5 dollars a cup but when we asked for alternative milks which we certainly expect to be available at that price point, we were denied. They only have milk. 4. Finally, except for the cute wooden sign hanging above the door, the atmosphere is also like a diner. Only packed with roughly 2 1/2 feet between each table. Not good. What is advertised and charged does not match what is received. Experience is more on par with a greasy spoon type of joint or a food truck. read more

Fantastic breakfast. We went there all three days we were in Carmel. Had multiple breakfast offerings and everything was excellent. Freshly prepared, great ingredients and no shortcuts! Portions were huge so bring your appetite or perhaps plan to take some home. The ONLY drawback is the cost as others have pointed out. I think most of us consider breakfast as a cheap meal. Maybe we should consider it as a eating event on par with lunch or dinner, and then this place a high-class dinner location, but for breakfast. Don't forget it is cash only. read more

Katy's Place is CASH ONLY. We stopped in here for breakfast on a Saturday morning. We could see it was busy and filled with folks inside and out. It was just two of us, so we were actually seated right away on the patio. This worked out well, because as the showed us through the restaurant to the patio, I could feel how stuffy and cramped the inside of the restaurant was on this busy Saturday morning. The patio, was no exception, as it was also full, but the fact that we were placed in the corner and it was outside, made this just a little bit better. (I don't know if I could have lasted too long inside, but that may just be me and how anxious I get.) (Also worth noting: I'm not sure how ADA accessible this place is when it is busy like this, because the way the waitress walked us to our tables, could barely fit us walking through without having to squeeze through the side, never mind if someone was in a wheelchair. A loss of star for me.) The server was sweet and very nice. She was attentive for how cramped the walkway was between tables- to our table. We ordered coffee for drinks, then my friend ordered Katy's Combo (pancakes with 2 eggs and choice of 2 bacon or 2 sausage) and I ordered the French Toast Combo (French toast with 2 eggs and choice of 2 bacon or 2 sausage). Both were what I would consider pricey (17.95 & 18.95) Coffee was $3.50 (also what I would consider pricey). BUT, I understand that being a few blocks from the beach, this place probably caters to the tourists that come to Carmel-By-The-Sea, and again, being a few blocks from the beach, this also drives up prices. So while it's pricey for what I'm used to, I also took into consideration the factors as to why. The food was definitely good portion, bacon was crispy and eggs were cooked well. I can't complain about the taste. I enjoyed my meal. The zinger for me (and another reason for loss of star) was that they accept CASH ONLY. No debit, no credit cards. I've been to cash only places, and I don't mind, but you can bet that there are signs everywhere stating this so you don't put your customers in an awkward position. The only way I knew was a tiny message at the bottom of the menu, that happened to catch my eye. Unless, I missed any outside signage, this was the only way to know. Not openly stating you are cash only can put many people- now a days- in a bind. My friend and I had to actually count out the cash we had on hand to make sure we didn't have to go find another place to eat, before ordering. I would recommend the establishment to get a nice sign made up that states this. They can put one at their door, and for outside on their hanging sign with the cute animals printed in wood on it. Honesty is the best policy. Couldn't be too hard to get another wood sign printed, right? Good service, good food, pricey- but accurate for area, cramped seating, street parking only, and Cash Only. I came here for breakfast. Had fruit berry pancakes with maple syrup. Breakfast was excellent. The total cost of breakfast was $28. I sat outdoors and the scenery was beautiful. They do have heaters outside to keep you warm in the morning. Customer service was excellent the facility was clean and had great interior architecture. What I like about this place is they open at 7:30 in the morning. They only except cash, no checks, or credit cards accepted. this is a recommended place if you're ever in Carmel. read more

I've come to Katy's Place a handful of times over the years. The vibe is nice and it's in a great location in Carmel. I've seen seen some comments/reviews about the price being $100 for two people but I have no clue how they even get that number, but also don't expect to pay Denny's level money for a restaurant in the heart of Carmel. I would say at least $50 for two people and make sure to bring cash. Benedicts are delicious and they don't skimp out on the fruit if you decide to get pancakes or French toast. I love that this restaurant offers Gizdich Ranch apple juice/hot apple cider! Best apple juice I've ever had ( can be purchased at Gizdich Ranch in Watsonville CA). Carmel by the Sea as a whole is a very dog friendly town so I was very disappointed that this restaurant only allows service dogs on the outdoor patio. The patio/ deck is a beautiful setting but a small space. The tables are situated very close together. The food was good but not exceptional. Cash only is, as other reviewers have stated, annoying, inconvenient & inconsiderate to customers. Good customer service should always incorporate those services that make the customer experience as easy and hassle free as possible. When we arrived at 1130 am, there were a lot of people waiting on the side walk. The restaurant was packed! We were seated right away; our waitress was very friendly and likeable, and our food arrived expeditiously. Each food portion was HUGE. I had the Dungeness Benedict and it was full of large chunks of crab meat. The meal was not at all disappointing. My husband had Chicago Benedict. He thought the pulled pork was not as tender as it should be. However, he's from the south so his standard for pulled pork is pretty high and different than Californian's. But he did enjoy his dish. This is my favorite breakfast place on the peninsula and bonus it's in quaint beautiful Carmel by the Sea. I'm a local, so I hesitate in recommending this place as it's already very popular amongst tourists. They have a pretty big menu that can fit whatever your breakfast food preferences are. To hearty and homemade to healthy options. I love eggs Benedict and corned beef hash so they have the Irish Benedict which is the perfect and decadent hybrid dish. They give you not 2 poached eggs BUT 3 so it's definitely filling and I struggle finishing it all. It it smothered with hollandaise sauce, their house made corned beef and hash browns. I love this dish so much I rarely get something else. They specialize in Benedict's so there a plenty of options from salmon, crab, vegetable etc. my boyfriend tends to get their pancakes and although I'm not a big pancake person, they are pretty good. I've also gotten their waffle for a sweeter breakfast and was equally pleased. Parking is street only which is normally not terrible in the early morning (I've never come here past 9:30). They are CASH ONLY which is a bit annoying since they also do not have an ATM machine and let's be honest, who carries cash these days. But I do it because I love this place. The prices are expensive (i.e., think like $23-26 a person so for two people with tip it's usually $50ish) so even though it is diner style breakfast I would say it's a bit more upscale. My family and I sat outside just because the city of Carmel-by-the-Sea is gorgeous. It is a CASH ONLY restaurant, so go prepared. We ordered waffles with bacon and eggs, a burger, and minced ham with scrambled eggs, potatoes, and toast. The food was good, very homestyle. The toast needed a little more love; loaf of bread ends were served with our plates. I'm disappointed in myself for not getting the name of our waitress. She looked extremely annoyed and frustrated, especially when we asked to change out a coffee mug that still had previous lipstick around the rim. She offered clam chowder with our burger meal, we ordered it, and it was never brought to our table. We inquired on the chowder, and our waitress gave us a look and said we never ordered, although there were five of us there who remember very well what we wanted to eat. We left it alone. She was the only waitress we observed that had to reset and vent to her fellow coworkers at the coffee nook outside before starting at a new table. I hope her day got better. The next morning we got up early and made our way to Katy's Place in Caramel for breakfast, another one of our favorites!  Katy's Place offers almost every variation of Eggs Benedict that you could imagine.  With three english muffins topped to the brim with whatever combination of your choosing along with the yummy breakfast potatoes, you won't leave here anything other than satisfied.  While the prices are on the high side, the amount of food you get is proportionate.  We did try the peanut butter pancakes as well, and they were good, but literally just buttermilk pancakes with some peanut butter on the side (I would pass on these next time).  The only parking is on the street and this place does get packed, so get here early! read more

Katy's place came super highly recommended. However, I'm not a 100% fan because I actually didn't have a 5-star experience. We came in and wanted to sit outside, but were seated in a weird uncomfortable spot between 2 other parties. It seemed like we were so close to them. The menu is absolutely huge, but they don't like when you do substitutions. I do like that they provide fruit subs for their breakfast potatoes though - and they bring you whole pieces of watermelon slices or cantaloupe (or 2 other choices, likely depending on the day). I asked for a meat substitution on my omelette, and while the server allowed for it, she said "they don't like when you do that." The server was not really super friendly - but she got the job done. Tip: they are cash only - bring that cash! The outdoor porch was very nice, just crowded. And we weren't in the sun so I was a bit chilly. But whatever. Things during this experience were just a little bit off. Not super impressed and I'm excited to try some other breakfast spots in town to compare! read more

I don't even know where to begin with Katy's place. This place has the BEST eggs Benedict! I'm from San Leandro, so this place is quite a drive for me. I've been to this place about 4-5 times. It never seems to disappoint! Heading back from Ventura county my friend and I stopped by here to grab some Benny before we got home. I always tell people about this place but because it's kinda far....it's not as easy to convince people to go. So this was the perf time! We arrived on a Monday at about 12pm....there was no wait!!! My friend and I saw down outside on the patio are (which a cute area where you can enjoy the nice weather!). I ordered the novia salmon Benny, my friend got crab Benny, and a short stack of pancakes Salmon Benny, it was so good!!! The spinach with the salmon! My most absoulute favorite part is how runny the egg was. It was PERFECT!!! (I've been searching around the Bay Area for the same Benedict quality and have failed..) the hollandaise sauce was delicious! My friend loved the crab Benedict and she proceeded to say, no wonder you judge all the Benedict's you've had and said they're not as good as Katy's place. THE PANCAKE. We are locals in Monterey and had never been so we agreed and met at 9:30 on a Tuesday. menu is large but prices are high for a simple breakfast place. My wife wasn't feeling great so she split the Katy's Combo ( 2 eggs, 2 pancakes, 2 links) with me. My son got pancakes. They rave about the pancakes, light and fluffy, a Katy's signature item, etc.... but frankly mine were doughy and maybe met Denny's level, maybe. Eggs were OK, over medium and link sausage was just Dennys grade as well. $22 for the Combo. Diner coffee @ $6 a cup, say no more. An extra side plate was $3 or 4, can't recall. Other couple split a Hawaiian themed pancake platter. 3 plates of pancakes and eggs and our outlay was $100. We were seated right away, the place was only half full, not busy. The waitress came by for our order and had an attitude. I think some reviews here on Yelp are about her. Yes or No, sigh, shrug shoulders, scowl.
