Ok honest review. Buyer beware everything on the menu is spicy even if no spicy ingredient are listed. First of all know that they will have a system confirm your reservation multiple times. They have a no show fee as well. Coming from out of town we thought that was a good sign it would be busy. We had a 6pm reservation and were the 2nd seated in the entire restaurant for a Saturday night. It would take 30min to get drinks and 60min to get our first food. Overall pacing didn't make sense. We ordered an appetizer, sushi, a roll to share and entrees. Waiter reccomended waygu tacos. Waygu was overcooked could have been anything. Chopped so small and overcooked. Menu says Avacado and waygu. They leave out the peppers where the spice wipes out the steak. Next the sushi. King Salmon with Cavier. Amazing! Win. Now we wait. Despite only 4 tables having people we now sit for 30min. Waiter apologized and eventually now our 1 roll comes out. We take one look it has Siracha on top! Not listed. I try a bite and again destroys the delicate fish. Waiter at first says oh yeah that has siracha listed. We showed him the menu and he apologized and they offered to remake. At this point 1 entire now comes out. We had 2 people but they separated the entrees. Uni pasta was good but for $40+ a very small serving not entree sized. And... you guessed it spicy! No reason and eventually as I eat it my pallet just lost in heat. 2nd entree finally comes the miso cod. Again expensive for less than 3oz I am eyeballing. Not an entree. The pickled radish on top again spiced for no reason. At least those could be removed. Overall the waiter tried and he felt bad even offered a free dessert. Dinner took 2hrs not because it made sense it seemed just disorganized. We were told the kitchen was behind yet they just opened and we could see more than 8 people. We figured out why reservations were easy on a Saturday night. People like us won't come back again. Shame because they clearly have quality ingredients and are so close to good food. It was ok, which is not what you want to hear from a restaurant of this supposed caliber. The service was decent, a bit on the slow side, especially towards the end, after the kitchen cut-off time. We were the last guests in the dining room, but there was no staff present, nor were any walking or passing by, which made getting their attention difficult. We sat by the back fireplace, which I think is close to the clean up area, and the entire time, the smell was not our food but citrus cleaning solution smell, think walking into a bathroom cleaning solution smells. It was bad; they should have paid more attention to this. The food was good and fresh, but pricy; this is to be expected. But when you charge these prices and consider the perceived elevated setting of this restaurant, the server, ambiance, including smell and scent, need to be right on. Eitherway, carpacio were fresh, sushi was good but not extremely creative that you can get it here only. The atmosphere is intimate and refined, with a beautiful Japanese-inspired aesthetic and moody lighting that makes it feel special the moment you walk in. We started with seasonal oysters and the Kaluga caviar service -- both fresh, balanced, and beautifully presented. The toro tartare and amberjack bluefin were clean and flavorful, and the miso glazed cod was the standout -- caramelized, tender, and perfectly sweet and savory. We ended with a lychee martini and crème brûlée, which was the perfect finish. But what really made the night was the customer service they were attentive, welcoming, and truly top tier. The food and ambiance are excellent--but the service was downright horrible. I came here after reading a Yelp review praising the staff, but my experience was the complete opposite. Our server had a terrible attitude. She never returned to our table after taking the order, ignored us while tending to other tables, and acted like we were inconveniencing her every time we asked for something. She didn't even look busy--just uninterested. For a high-end sushi restaurant in Pasadena, that's unacceptable. No matter how good the food is, it's not worth dining somewhere that makes you feel unwelcome when there are plenty of other places with both great food and service. The one bright spot was Edwin, the co-server, who checked in on us occasionally. If not for him, this would have been a zero-star review. If you want consistently great sushi and service, head to Sushi Roku or Katsuya. Stay away from this place unless you're prepared to risk being served by someone with an extremely negative attitude. I went here as part of their make your own hand roll experience. Overall the experience was really fun a great activity to do for a date night or just learn some new skills and eat yummy things with friends. Our waiter didn't check in with us as often as we hoped given how slow it was. We loved the Wagyu tacos! You're paying for the ambience really. It's nice and moody. The music is nice but might be a little loud for an "upscale" restaurant. I mean it's nice, but the more you sit and observe, the more you notice the flaws. It's trying to be Vegas. The servers are polite but slow. Service: our reservation was at 7:45pm. We asked for a booth so it took only 5 minutes extra. Appetizer came within 20 minutes of ordering. Drinks came within 10-15 minutes of ordering. Seafood pasta came around 30 minutes. Sushi no where to be found, sushi and sashimi is cold so an entire hour is difficult to pardon. Sushi came first at around an hour after ordering. Sashimi came maybe close to 2 hours from being seated. Drinks: Emerald: really INFUSED. My boyfriend said it tasted more like air freshener. Lychee mint martini: the server said it'll be more on the sweet side so I added another shot of vodka, but it costed $35 for one drink. House old fashion: my boyfriend ordered one for himself and said it was sweet. Not your regular kick of old fashion. It had 2 ice cubes. Lavender breeze: if the color purple had a taste, this is it. you will taste the color purple. My boyfriend said it tastes like trash. Doesn't taste like the ingredients in there at all. It smelt like bubbly spicy detergent to me. Shrimp tempura: pretty good. Fresh and hot off the fryer. A bit much salt, you'll see the excess salt on the plate. Sauce was a bit saltier than your usual tempura dip. The sauce was closer to soy sauce than tempura sauce. Seafood pasta: seemed like they used Panda Express teriyaki chicken sauce a hint of chamoy. Overcooked and hard chewy seafood. Salty, too much sauce, sauce takes over the food. So salty we ate one noodle at a time and then gave up. We won't finish it, it's too much overcompensating flavor (weird tangy sauce) that's NOT supposed to in pasta. Sushi from RIGHT to LEFT (2 per): Scallop sushi: too much yuzu Red snapper: fish a little not cold... Halibut: dense meat not cold Tuna: the truffle takes over Yellowtail: it's normal... just normal Toro: alright. The rice is not it. It's more sticky rice than sushi rice. It's either undercooked or like hard and sticky. They somehow found a way to make undercooked rice sticky. The cuts of fish are on the smaller side. The ginger and wasabi dip... the ginger is more on the dry side. Not enough wasabi per soy sauce ratio. Black snapper sashimi: pretty solid. Hard to mess up. It's literally just cut slabs of fish. I don't know, you can come and try for yourself. But our bill was almost $400 if you want to come and try for yourself. I give it a 1 but my boyfriend said it was a 1.5. We don't see how this place has so many 5 stars. We genuinely felt tricked by all the 5 stars that we'll counter it with a 1. Maybe the people haven't had actual Japanese cuisine, but we genuinely don't know how these 5 star ratings got here. I have not been here since COVID. I finally went back for dinner and the service was not that good. The waiter, Nick took a long time to come back to the table. We had to ask other waiters for assistance. I ordered the salmon and it came out raw and I complained about it and the manager, Justin came over and stated that's how it comes and I said well I want it cooked just like I told the waiter when I ordered it. I came here for a fun date night activity to learn how to make handroll sushi :) It costs $89/person. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a friendly host who offered us 1 cocktail each as part of the experience so we decided to go with the Lavender Breeze and Lychee Mint Martini that came with a delicate balance of fruity, floral, and strong alcohol taste. The cocktails also came in beautiful presentation that were totally IG worthy :) For appetizer, we got to try their Maguro Crispy Rice and Wagyu Tacos. We were also give 4types of fish, seaweed/soy papers, rice, chopped veggies toppings, 3types of sauce, and a pair of gloves. It's been two decades since I last stepped foot in Pasadena and, oh boy, have parts of it absolutely changed. My wife is a Yelp master when it comes to finding some of the best spots for food + drinks in any town. Kaviar is no exception and every, to my recollection, item we ordered was an outstanding bite & sip from start to finish. Besides the attentiveness to the quality of the food and beverages, there is an even greater attentiveness from the staff and management. I apologize to forget certain names, but thank you especially to our wonderful host, David, and the sincerity of Tish (Leticia) for making our evening one to remember for a while. In terms of what we ordered and would absolutely recommend A5 wagyu tartare Truffle toro Shiso tempura with uni Blue crab & salmon Cajun salmon Yes, in that order from top to bottom; not saying that the cajun salmon was our least favorite but that's just how the items are ranked :) We opted for a couple of sake selections to pair with the meal and those did not disappoint. read more

Kaviar Sushi Bar is a glitzy, expensive Japanese restaurant that presents itself as a trendy upscale restaurant with club vibes. Compared to other restaurants in its class, Kaviar offers average to slightly below average food, great service, good ambiance, and mediocre value. On our birthday date we began with the Golden Hour ($15), a unique sake, grapefruit, lemon, and tea that was light and refreshing. This was followed by our sushi, Amberjack Bluefin ($29) and Rock Shrimp Tempura ($22) rolls. The Tempura shrimp sushi was fairly unremarkable with a serviceable sauce to stave off dryness. The Amberjack roll, recommended by our server, was spectacular, and the highlight of the evening. The delicate touch of the Amberjack and Bluefin was pierced by a striking, if highly unusual, stab of Yuzu lemon that was at first bite disarming, at second intriguing, and at third, addicting. Resisting the urge to order one of several items featuring 24K gold leaf or served with a dry ice presentation, we splurged next with the A5 Wagyu Tartare topped with some caviar ($39). Perhaps my palate is unsophisticated, but I could not distinguish this from any other tartare I've had, with the seasoning lacking and the caviar adding little to the dish. We then had a selection of several tempura items ($14), which were excessively heavy with twice the tempura coating we're accustomed to. This was followed by the Miso Glazed Black Cod ($48), which was similar to other upscale black cod presentations I've seen elsewhere. We found it tasty, soft, fall-apart-in-your-fork consistency, as it should be, but relatively low in flavor (even for cod) with a somewhat stingy portion. Our server Vanessa was kind, attentive, and helpful. We appreciated her Amberjack roll recommendation, her ability to identify cooked sushi items (which my date preferred), and a generous offer of a free dessert for my birthday. The hostess was similarly kind, calling to check in when we were running behind, and seating us despite a late arrival. The restaurant has a trendy aesthetic which straddles between fine restaurant and upscale club. It is dark, the music at times a little loud, celebratory desserts come with sparklers instead of candles, and gold leaf or occasional fire (see our Cod) makes its way into the dishes. This is certainly a good place to bring a date or group who is into that type of thing. The suits of Sengoku Jidai armor were a nice touch. Overall, the value was mediocre for downtown Pasadena, with prices better suited for West Hollywood or similar; I felt the Tartare and Black Cod were overpriced. Expect to pay around $100/person, not including tip, which I feel is somewhat unjustified for the food quality. Of note, we had a promotion from the inKind app ($50 off a check over $150), which you should look into on your visit. My scores below do not reflect this discount. Is Kaviar kool? Definitely. Is the food as good as the vibes? No. Come to Kaviar if you or your date are looking for something trendy, hip, don't care too much for the details, and don't mind splurging a little. NOTE: There's a very steep, tall stairway leading from the street level courtyard up to the restaurant, but there's an elevator available for those who need it. SERVICE: On this visit, service was just okay. Our waiter seemed to "phone it in" a little. He wasn't all that friendly, and there were several long waits between table side check ins. When we finally asked for our check and a to go box for one of the desserts, it took forever, and he forgot the to go box. We did run into Justin, the manager who assisted us so well on our last visit, and we had a pleasant conversation with him, as well as him checking in with us a couple times in the evening. DRINKS: We ordered a couple of cocktails to start the evening, a Lavender Breeze and a Dewdrop Martini ($15 ea). Both were well made. We ordered a second round, my wife tried the Spicy Margarita ($15), and I had an Old Fashioned ($15). Again, both were very good.
