As a first timer at Kaviar the experience was phenomenal. The staff was so knowledgeable and with the help of our waiter Gap we were able to get the full experience. The Hotate carpaccio and amberjack bluefin were my favorite dishes of the night. Highly recommend to all, great staff with top tier sushi. read more

Kaviar is a great place to take a date or to give an elevated sushi experience for you or your small group. The vibe is dark, intimate, and meant to make you feel fancy. Now - onto the review: Service: I managed to snag the last reservation on a busy Friday night here when they were packed (it really tests the restaurant's front of house and kitchen), and was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't as slow as I expected (although there was still some lag with service and you needed to flag down wait staff if you wanted to interject between courses). Food: good selection, plating was done nicely, and the flavors were bold. Parking: street or structure (and you hoof it a bit). tl;dr - if you're looking for a fun or intimate sushi night - Kaviar is your place! :) read more

Love love love this place. The interior is classy, dark, and bold. You'll find the place upstairs, and I'm almost positive that there isn't any outside or patio seating. The menu is diverse - basically, Japanese fusion - with lots of sushi, carpaccio, rolls and hot/cold dishes to choose from. I was a big fan of the wagyu tacos, gyoza, seared/smoked salmon with ikura, kanpachi, spicy tuna crispy rice, and baked salmon roll. The servers here are just as classy and sleek as the overall aesthetic, and we experienced such great service. Parking wasn't easy, and we ended up with a metered parking spot that gave us so much trouble with paying by app. There's another location in the DTLA / Arts District. I highly recommend giving both a try. read more

This place is top tier! Everything we ordered was amazing, fresh, delicious and beautifully prepared. We had the crispy rice with spicy tuna (best I've ever had), the wagyu tacos (meat was perfectly cooked), shishito peppers, oysters and crab hand rolls. It's pricey but totally worth the splurge. Our server, Jess, was attentive, kind, and helpful with suggestions. She was also funny and a good sport with my husband who likes to joke around with people. The ambiance was perfect for our date night. All black with a fireplace and gold accents. A beautiful lady walking around decked out in sparkles was the icing on the cake. We will definitely be coming back and I can't wait to try more. read more

Came here for my significant other's birthday. It was a great experience! The vibes of the restaurant were fantastic. The service was great too. It was our first time and our server Gap, walked us through the menu providing us with great recommendations. He was attentive to us throughout the night so we felt very well taken care of. We were going to order the Uni pasta but they did not have a few items on their menu this night. We had the Maguro crispy rice, Miso Glazed Black Cod, Hotate Sashimi, Salmon Sashimi, Toro Roll, Truffle Toro, and a crème brûlée Colombia coffee flavor I think. The Maguro crispy rice had a good ratio between the crispy rice and spicy tuna. It had the perfect crunch and kick to it. The Miso glazed black cod was seasoned perfectly. The presentation was beautiful as well. The Hotate Sashimi tasted very fresh. I'm not a big scallop fan but the taste was amazing. The Salmon sashimi was fresh and tasted great. Really can't go wrong with some salmon if it's fresh. The Toro roll has many great reviews so of course we had to try it. The toro sort of got over powered by the rest of the roll but the roll still tasted great The Truffle Toro also has a lot of good reviews and I would have to say it tops the Toro roll. The caviar on top was a perfect finishing touch on the flavor of the fish. It melted in my mouth and I just wanted more. The presentation was impeccable. We had the crème brûlée for dessert. The sugar coated nicely on top. It had a nice coffee flavor that wasn't too strong and wasn't too sweet. It definitely satisfied our sweet tooth for the night. To make things better, the dessert was on the house! We were also given free drinks but I wasn't sure of the name of it. It was a little sour, sweet, and had the flavor of cucumber? Whatever it was, it tasted refreshing and much needed. We received the non alcoholic version of it since our server didn't know our age but the quality of the drink and the gesture of our server was very nice. Overall, I would come here again. The price tag is definitely on the heftier side but the experience and quality of food is worth it. read more

Went there Friday night with reservations. The decor are nice. The food are nice. The servers are nice and responsive too. But I guess it was too busy that night, every stage of the diner needs waiting. 20 mins to get seated. 30 mins to get ordered( we complained and then got ordered). 30 mins to get first round of dish. Another 30 to get second round. AND I WAS HUNGRY! The manager knew us waited so he offered free desserts. Even desserts are nice. In the right temperature and very tasty. So the deducted 2 stars are for the long wait (poor management, overcrowded seating, whatever the reason is). Food 4/5. I got dineLA menu and get sushi sets. The fish were nice and fresh. Service 4.5/5: I knew they busy.. running around all the time like bees. But still really responsive. Can't complain about it. read more

We went here for DineLA, and the food did not disappoint. The prefix menu offered more than we expected, and the food was of amazing quality. I love truffle, and I swear I tasted it in every bite. One dish even had the gold leaf with a bump of caviar on top. The restaurant hides on the 2nd floor giving a sultry, inviting ambiance. The music was from my playlist of worldly house music. Most importantly, Narin was the most attentive server we've ever met. I'm definitely returning. read more

Went to Kaviar with a few girlfriends from work, beautiful space and great ambiance. We had this young lady as our waitress by the name of Maida who was very sweet and attentive despite the busy Friday night. She gave us great recommendations such as this spicy yellowtail roll and a great martini which were our table's favorites. read more

Bad service took half drink order for table left came back 20 min later took the rest took another twenty to order food. Asked multiple times for waitress to busboys and hostess nothing changed. My clients left before the food came as they had other places to be. Don't go here if you want good service made my company look horrible and on top of that they included gratuity so couldn't even short them if I wanted to what a scam and waste! read more

5 stars to Greg!!! He was a fantastic server. We enjoyed the restaurant, the vibe, the food and just overall experience. We loved the toro and yelowtail as well as spicy yellowtail escolar. Chef's choice sushi was also delicious!! Greg also brought a warm towel scented eucalyptus which added a nice touch to the experience! Valet guy was also super nice to bring my car from parking lot to valet spot when I realized that they have valet, however parked in the building. VIP experience!!!! Will be coming back! read more

Came here for the Dine LA menu since this was our first time. Kaviar certainly offers a good array of menu items. My standouts were the nigiri, sashimi (truffle toro all day), and miso glazed black cod. I'm more of a meat guy than fish but black cod was way better than their Wagyu striploin. This meal, one cocktail, and two Sapporo Lights in...I was happy to say I was full. Greg, our server, was great to us. read more

I recall when this used to be Vertical Wine Bar and they retained the dark low light ambiance which I'm a fan of. Will come back to try other menu items, especially the hot items. read more

Beautiful ambiance, great space but horrible food. Its called Kaviar but they offer 1 kind of caviar that is called "kaluga." We ordered it and it was o kay. Not great. It ended up being the best thing we had all night. Every single thing we ordered after this was disappointing, not tasty at all and took forever to be served. We ordered a lot of food. They offer Japanese A5 wagu all over the menu. Every single one we ordered the waiter responded with "let me go check" He would come back way later each time and let us know it was sold out. Very disappointed with this place. Spent $500 or $600 dollars for a bad meal. Will not be returning. read more

5/5 garlic edamame. The highlight of the meal. Savory, delicious. 3.5/5 ramen - noodles were undercooked, with noodles still stuck together. However, broth was solid, and the pork was generously portioned. Soft shell crab was a nice touch. If they could improve the noodles, would be a great dish. 3/5 agedashi - more acidic than I would have liked. The breading/coating was thick, and unfortunately did not let the underlying tofu 4/5 service. Our server was Greg who was great, but the place seemed a bit understaffed (probably because it was a Monday evening we came). 5/5 ambience. Very good date spot. Dimly lit, luxurious chairs. The left side of the dining room has better views but the right side has better seating and ambience. Take your pick. 3/5 - toro roll. It was fine, not a standout. Not sure if it has asparagus or some other vegetable, but the texture was not great. 4.5/5 - very good brownie with ice cream. Brownie was soft, warm. Not the biggest portion. Overall, wins points for ambience and the garlic edamame, and chocolate brownie for desert. What we had for mains were nothing to write home about, but Would consider coming back for a date. read more

This place surprised me. The dim ambiance gave off a very romantic vibe, definitely an ideal date spot. The best part is the food was delicious. We ordered the caviar platter for $109. That was a great starter, I enjoyed all the toppings like chives, onion, and butter for the caviar. It came with crème fraiche, mini hard toasts and blinis. The toro roll along with the crab & toro sashimi had caviar on top of it. Very good combo. My favorite was the miso black cod, it was sweet & so delicious. Service was amazing, top notch. Will definitely be coming back. My rating scale: 5: Crave for it. Will go out of my way to come back. 4: Very good, will recommend it to my people. 3: Decent. Worst experience I've had at a restaurant. I made a reservation for our anniversary and we arrived on time. The host asked us to wait a few minutes and offered us a drink. I asked for nothing more than a simple glass of water yet it took her nearly ten minutes of going back and forth, and still no water ever arrived. When a table finally opened, she tried to seat us at the smallest table in the restaurant. We chose to wait for a better one and politely reminded her again about the water. She continued walking back and forth with no follow‑through. At that point, the experience had already taken a turn for the worse. What made it even more disappointing was the manager sitting right in front of us, watching everything unfold, and doing absolutely nothing. No acknowledgment, no assistance, no leadership. Just sitting there while our anniversary night was being ruined. This place clearly has no understanding of hospitality or basic service. I'd rather spend my money at a real sushi restaurant one that actually knows how to host guests with respect. read more

We opted for the DineLA menu, and everything was delicious--from the sushi to the sashimi, each dish was fresh and full of flavor. The portions were perfect, and the presentation was beautiful. Our server, Nadine was very accommodating The real highlight was when they surprised us with a birthday cake--two huge slices! It was so thoughtful, but we definitely needed a to-go box for those extra generous portions. A perfect end to a great meal. What a beautiful and classy place. I came here for a birthday and boy did it not disappoint. All the raw dishes were fresh and tasty, presented very well. Service was great as our waiter was very attentive, and explained all the dishes as they come out. The place has valet options in front as it's located in downtown Pasadena. We were able to find nearby street metered parking for 2hrs max. read more

This place is definitely more about the ambiance and less about the quality of the food. Came om a Friday night at prime dinner hour and immediately noticed how empty it was. The servers were very kind but the kitchen was PAINFULLY slow. The chef's choice was sad with our 15 piece including salmon, tuna, yellowtail, and black snapper, not prepared any differently from the standard menu and likely a better value if ordered independently. The kanpanchi carpaccio was decent but overall, the sashimi slices were thin and stingy. The toro and hotate sushi was good quality but it would be hard to appreciate with all the added salt which completely blew out my palate. The best part of our meal was the sake flightThere are certainly places close by with better quality, more generous portions, and better pricing read more

"The Speakeasy" is located in Old Pasadena. There is a large multi-story parking garage right…read morearound the corner. The place has some intrigue as you need to know a password to gain entry. I was pleasantly surprised when I sent an email to the address on the website and received a reply with the password in a little over thirty minutes. After parking, we didn't have any problems finding the entrance even though it is not marked. Look for the big wood double doors and doorman standing in front. After giving him the password, he opened the doors and we walked in. We were surprised in several ways. The place is way bigger than I would expect for a place named "The Speakeasy". And at 6:30pm on a Sunday, we were the only guests inside. Only one other couple came in during the 30 minutes we were there. I would assume they are a lot busier on Friday and Saturday night. It is dimly lit, and very red inside. The bar is large with many bottles of liquor on display and many seats. The rest of the space is one large area that must have at least 20 tables, and the ceiling is high. It gives off more of a nightclub vibe than a speakeasy vibe. I tried the Naked & Famous cocktail which has two of my favorite spirits (Vida mezcal, aperol, yellow Chartreuse, lime, $18). It was nicely balanced with a good mix of smoke and herbal flavor. She had the Pablo's Poison (Altos reposado tequila, strawberry, lime, jalapeno, elderflower, $17). The jalapeno flavor really stood out with strawberry and elderflower in the background. They have a good cocktail menu with almost twenty cocktails, as well as a food menu with ten items. Walk up to the bar to order your drinks. Jeremy, the manager, and the female bartender whose name who I didn't get were nice. We aren't in Pasadena very often, and while they have a good cocktail menu, I don't know if we would return. We were expecting more.

We ended up at Magnolia House for a late lunch/early dinner. They also serve breakfast/brunch only on weekends. Walked in around 4:30pm and we were greeted by Brian, one of the managers. Brian was the standout star of the whole experience! His energy was exceptional and he is such a great conversationalist. He checked on us several times throughout our meal and made sure we were doing well. He on his own was HANDS DOWN a five star human being. At first, he wanted to seat us in the back corner but I told him the table was too small and he accommodated us with a bigger table. Our server Kiana came up to the table with a pleasant smile and greeting to take our drink orders. I got a glass of cranberry juice along with some water. My son got the American Dream cocktail along with some water. We skipped on dessert. From 4-6pm, they have a happy hour menu with some of their cocktails and shareable plates. The portions are just a bit smaller and the prices are a little lower. It's a good way to sample different items. I think we got a good variety of food to enjoy. To start, we got the Little Gem Salad. It was such a unique combination of flavors and SUPER delicate/light. My son and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The next starter was the Zucchini and Feta Fritters, which was good but not the best out of everything else we ordered. The zucchini was a bit mushy but the batter it was fried in was crispy. Another starter we shared were the Moroccan Spiced Chicken Wings. These wings are gigantic and very flavorful. They definitely pack some heat, so be careful. I don't think the A/C was NOT working to begin with, so the place was already hot. The wings made us sweat even more. For entrées, we got the burger and the pork belly. The bun, the meat, the cheese, the onions, and the crispy bacon...all of it mixed together into the perfect burger. I had wanted to add some mushrooms and avocado to it, but Kiana said they were unable to do it. I also asked for lettuce and she said that would be an extra charge. What extra charge for lettuce? We still got charged for avocado when the bill came, but they took it off once we mentioned it. The pork belly was also very tender, flavorful, and crispy. It's just hard to compete with the burger! We also got an order of the Belgian Fries to share and we were both pleasantly surprised at how good they were. The fries are salty and cut pretty thick. The sauce that came on the side was so yummy. We asked for a small extra cup to-go. All in all, the food was great and we liked everything. The vibe of the restaurant wasn't really all that for me. Brian genuinely made up for anything that was lacking in the atmosphere. He is such a wonderful asset to the restaurant and their company. The restaurant itself has been here for about 15 years now and it used to be a very old house. You can tell when you look around. They did a good job with the renovations, but you can see the different areas/rooms. I think they tried to keep the casual comfort of a home, while making it a slightly elevated experience. It was very clean everywhere, especially the bathrooms. They have one gender neutral bathroom, one for men, and one for women. No private parking, so you'll have to park on the street and put money in the kiosk. They also had an outdoor seating. Pretty BIG, only took picture of one side. They also have 2 small TVs. I was here for lunch and walked into a small but impressive space, elegantly decorated, with both a dining and bar area. My seating was in the latter, not on bar stools, but at a table for two, because I was dinning solo. For appetizers, I chose the scallop aguachile. There were two small portions, each in a plastic shell, sitting on a bed of ice. While I am not fond of aguachiles because of the general overdose of citrus in them, this one really surprised me. While there were only small pieces of scallop, it had an abundance of small cubed cucumber pieces that provided the nicest contrast of crunch, juice and texture. The citrus was mild and well balanced. A wonderful start. I selected the fried fish burger for my entree. The fish was mildly battered, yet lightly crisp, to highlight the big pieces of fresh, flaky and moist fish that were literally, falling off the burger. It was a good stack, with minimum lettuce, tomato and sauce, so as to not take it away from the star, the succulent, perfectly prepared, flavorful fish. The bun was also well crafted, nice and fluffy on the inside, not dry, with a buttery brown on the outside. Easily one of the best fish burgers I have had. For dessert (the third course), I had to have the profiteroles with ice cream. One was with vanilla, the other with strawberry. Both came topped with dark chocolate sauce, that had hardened by the time of eating. A superbly assembled concoction, that provided the crackle and exhilarating mouth feel. I cannot remember the last time where at a Dine LA restaurant, all three lunch courses were so well presented and satisfying. One was better than the other. Overall, it was worth the drive, for an extraordinary dining experience.

My experience at Kaviar was a bit of a rollercoaster, to say the least! The food quality saved this experience from being a 3 star review. In summary, the food was a real highlight - delicious! But when it came to the speed of service and kitchen operations, it left a bit to be desired. I'm not sure if I'd go back. Now, let's break it down. The atmosphere at Kaviar was truly something to rave about. With its stylish black walls, ceilings, and moody lighting, it set the perfect mood for an evening out. As for the food and drinks, we ordered a delightful array: garlic edamame, crispy rice, two rolls, and a couple of alcoholic drinks. But here's where things took a turn. It was a quiet Saturday evening around 8:30, and we found ourselves growing increasingly frustrated with the pace and sequence of orders coming out of the kitchen and bar. We spent a significant amount of our time just sitting in our booth with no food in front of us, despite ordering everything within minutes of each other. The second roll, shockingly, made its grand entrance around an hour and a half into our visit, by which point we'd lost our appetite for more and asked for the check. I totally get that good food takes time, and I'm all for savoring the moment, but it seemed like there was some major confusion in the kitchen. A table across from us, seated about an hour after us, got their rolls seemingly simultaneously to ours, making us scratch our heads. After spending most of our visit without a morsel in front of us, our enthusiasm dwindled, and truth be told, we ventured to King Taco to round off our evening's meal. Surprisingly, King Taco stole the show that night! In conclusion, I'd suggest giving Kaviar a try, especially for the delectable food. Loved this place! The entrance is what initially drew us in. Walked in with out a reservation and they were able to seat us fairly quickly. Our server Gabriel had recommended the uni pasta and 2 cut rolls which were all really good. He was attentive and informative from the get go. There was a gentleman serving us drinks who was also very attentive and kind, brought out our drinks and immediately realized one was supposed to be non-alcoholic and changed it right away for us. My only qualm is in looking at the receipt it reads that there's a surcharge of 3.5% for credit cards which I think they should just build into their pricing because adding a surcharge at the end of your evening when I'd imagine most people pay with a credit card is kind of a bummer to a great time spent. read more

The reason why we brought this up in the first place is because the two didn't come out together. He then brings another waitress who tells us it should have come out already, and then another who tells us completely different information (i.e. it came out with different fish). Overall an unpleasant experience. Would not be back again nor would I recommend this place to anyone, especially since they made such a big deal out of $10 nigiri on a $800 bill.

We came on a slow day so everything came out pretty quickly. I love the open kitchen concepts where you can see the chefs whipping up the food. I appreciated being able to see the work behind the beautiful and yummylicious food. My only regret was not getting their tasting menu sets which I hear is amazing. The restaurant has a no tipping system, but do charge a 16% that goes to tax per state law and operation funding. However, if there was a tip option, I would've tipped Definitely coming back!
