Imagine my surprise when, on a road trip back from Indiana, an unplanned stop off the I-80 backwoods Loganton exit in Pennsylvania uncovered an unexpected Middle Eastern delight in KavKaz's Restaurant! Aesthetically sketchy, this is one of those places that makes travelers eye each other warily as they wonder if the gas station food across the street might be a safer choice. However, the fearless go wherever their stomachs pull! KKs has been open a mere 2 months. The staff is unpolished, but kind and helpful. They are also well informed on the food, which is good because there's a few tricks to making the yummy food even yummier. The interior decor leaves much to be desired. But the food, the food the FOOD! "When in Rome" is a suitable cliché. Don't get a safe American style meal here - you will be disappointed. One of my party got eggs, white toast and fries. Fries were waaaay too salty for my taste, but probably perfect for the average American. DIVE into their home spun dishes - if you have trouble recognizing/pronouncing the name, it's probably delicious. I had Khinkali, a dough ball filled with beef and pork and some sort of delicious sauce. The server informed me to add a touch of pepper to the top...made all the difference in the world. So so so good! Other persons in my party had the avocado salad and a pork dish called Shashliki. Seriously delicious. Highly recommend all three dishes. Prices are ridiculously low, I got three Khinkali at $1.25 each. This is totally worth a stop if you find yourself hungry and in the stranger parts of Pennsylvania. Four stars because we're rating food here...lost one star to aesthetics - go ahead and hate me for it. read more

Traveling across PA state found Russian food place that serves delicious Pilaf or Homemade Potatoes with choice Chicken, Beef, Mushroom or Vegetable. Perfectly spiced. American fare too. Salads and soup selection looked good too. Don't know any Russian so waitress was very helpful deciphering menu. read more

Really nice people making soul food from the Caucasus Mountains. We really enjoyed the Greek salad, Laghman stew, and homemade bread. Everything is homemade. It's like going home for dinner if you are from anywhere near Georgia, Russia, Azerbaijan, Eastern Turkey, or Armenia. It's worth a stop here if you like this kind of flavor and style. Like the Urban Dictionary definition, these people are so bad ass they insisted we didn't tip and leave a review on Google because Yelp is your grandma's reviewing app! So get in here George and Martha, they have a pot of stew and a hearty loaf to take the edge off the turnpike. We loved it and I will be looking for it next time we travel I-80 in Central PA. Saw this place while taking a quick detour for some gas and decided to give it a try. The owner was very nice and translated the menu. Ordered Borsch, Greek salad and beef stroganoff and some sort of meat pastry. All was very good. The beef stroganoff was very different than what we've had before, made with a mustard cream sauce and had potatoes instead of noodles. But still very good. My dad and I stopped here on our way to Michigan. We hate eating at fast food places and it was raining so we wanted something warm. I found the place on Google maps since it was right along the highway and we kinda laughed at the fact that in the middle of nowhere there was a Kavkaz restaurant. The restaurant itself is very cute and homey feeling, it has wood everywhere and is set up with a few small tables and a bar to order your food. We heard the owners speaking Russian which made us feel at home and we had a pleasant conversation with them. I ordered the borscht and hachipuri with the egg and it hit the spot 10/10 would recommend. We also got some juice that isn't sold anywhere by us and it was delicious. The only reason I'm giving them a 4/5 is because qe did also order the shahlik except there was a lot of fat on the meat and the piroshki was a little bland and didn't really have much of a taste. Pleasantly surprised to find this ethnic gem just off Rte 80. The friendly Armenian-born owner, who runs the restaurant with the help of his wife, sons and extended family, took the time to give us the menu highlights, which come from many of the former Soviet republics. All of the entrees were delicious, the garlicky noodle Laghman soup, the spicy Kharcho soup, the marinated chicken kabob and the well-seasoned rice pilaf. And the gooey cheesy bread... Don't get me started. We were a little apprehensive making this stop but it was well worth the slight detour... Don't miss it! read more

We just came across this gem of a restaurant. The food is amazing! We recognized some items on the menu, but the owner kindly came over and explained the soups. We ordered Greek salads, cheese bread, and my husband ordered soup. The portions are large, we could have shared the salad. Also, the salad doesn't have lettuce, but it wasn't missed. The soup could have been just the meal as well. Everything was super fresh and healthy. The owner treated us to a baklava type of dessert. If you are RT 80 In central PA and wondering if there are any restaurants that are serving fresh food, please stop here. Don't be scared of the food choices, they are the best in the area! The food is overpricedThe kabob meat was extremely spicy hot and over cooked and extremely dry it was like chewing on a leather! The unprofessional waitress didn't even check on our table not even once until she was called for which she was outside smoking . The soup was tasteless. The smell of the restaurant was disgusting due to them having plumbing issues and they were openly working on it which filled the whole restaurant with the disgusting smell of sewage. This is now our go-to stop when traveling and need a food refuel. The food is outstanding! We had two young men from Europe with us and they said this reminded them so much of the food they had bavk home. Lamb stew, stroganoff, kababs, amazing bread... This is totally the worst service I have ever had in my life. I couldn't even order what I wanted because she couldn't understand me. When I tried to wave her down she just brought me my ticket and didn't even ask me if I wanted anything else. But after seeing the price I guess I better not order anymore. $11.59 for a small bowl of soup!!! There were only 4 customers in the place. I was in the middle of writing a great review for Kavkaz when I began to feel a sharp stabbing pain in my stomach. We had pulled off of I-80 at exit 192 because we were in need of gas and something to fill our bellies. We quickly realized, however, that there weren't many options for food in the area. After checking reviews for Kavkaz on Yelp, we decided to give it a shot. Since we were on a long drive from New York to Michigan (three hours in, with six more to go), we ordered takeout to eat in the car. While our food tasted great, an hour later I was in horrible pain. I won't go into the details, but I have never been so sick in my life - believe me when I say food poisoning is even worse when you're stuck in a car. Once we finally got home, I was up all night because I was so ill. I hadn't had anything else to eat that day, so I'm fairly positive that the culprit was the bourek (meat pastry) I ordered from Kavkaz. I even noticed that it was barely warm when I took it out of the container just a few minutes after receiving it (in contrast to the khachapuri, which was so hot we couldn't touch it right away). I can't be sure, but I believe it wasn't stored at a proper temperature. I hate giving bad reviews. I know this is a new establishment, and that they are still probably figuring things out. I sympathize with that, but food safety should be taken extremely seriously, and other Yelpers deserve to be warned. The food tasting good is worth nothing if it is making people sick. On that note, I also watched as the cashier/server sneezed into her hands, wiped her hands on a napkin, and then didn't do anything further to stop the spread of germs. She didn't wash her hands, nor did she use the antibacterial gel that was sitting on the counter in front of her. She just sat back down at her seat behind the counter. That's just gross. And then she handed me utensils for my food (which I obviously didn't use). I think this place has potential, but they need to get their food safety/employee cleanliness in check. read more

Some of the best Russian/Armenian food around. The owner was extremely helpful in interpreting the menu and everything the group of four of us ordered was delicious.
