We have a very nice meal here on Wednesday! I saw this place had opened, and several months ago, Eric R. and I popped in to look at the menu. The host led us from the quiet entry bar/waiting room down a narrow hallway to the back, where a "secret" sushi bar awaited. We made a mental note to return when we could, so I made reservations for right after I flew into DFW. Our seats at the barre were designated for Lisa R. with a lit-up sign, so that was cool. There are purse hooks under the bar at each seat!!! I started with the pandan oolong tea (oolong with coconut and pandan syrup), and Eric R. got the Okinawa green tea. We reviewed the menu options. Omakase is available for reservations only, so we could choose from those options, a handroll omakase/dinner set, or a la carte. There were also special fish and cold plates for the day. We ultimately agreed to do the classic omakase set, which came with plenty of food. Each of us could pick two starters. Eric R. chose seaweed salad and miso soup; I chose shishitos and edamame. They were individually served with dramatic white serveware which were from Italy or France. Then we had our hot tasting: black cod filled with scallop mousse in black truffe cream sauce. It was definitely rich and unctuous! Next we got our nigiri from Chef Manuel. All of the fish is aged from 3 to 25 days, which makes this quite unique from the ultra fresh raw fish at most omakase and sushi restaurants. Nigiri course: Akami (lean tuna) with shiitake mushroom pate Madai (sea bream) with chive Shima Aji (striped jack) with grated raw garlic Kanpachi (amberjack) with Japanese tea flower Hamachi (yellowtail) with shaved bottarga King salmon topped with kizami wasabi Chu-toro with pickled cherry tomato Uni in open mini temaki Then a different chef took over for us for handrolls. He made them to order and kept serving Eric R. first, so Eric R. asked him to serve me first for the third one. Temaki course: King salmon Spicy akami tuna Fried eel with avocado Finally, we were served a dessert course of miso citrus ice cream, matcha meringue, yuzu cured, kiwi, and two kinds of oranges. It was very refreshing! The service was fantastic throughout and I was impressed that each chef has to know how long each fish is aged and where it is from. Most fish came from Japan except the king salmon from New Zealand. We were not told where the uni was from, but it likely was listed on the special menu. Overall, the ambiance is great, we never felt rushed, there was plenty of food, the staff is fantastic, and the quality was excellent. I enjoyed the flavors and the fish was already seasoned and sauced to the chef's preferences, so no extra soy sauce was needed. We did the premium omakase, and the bites were delicious and interesting, I appreciated the balance of traditional and innovative flavor combinations. Almost all of the nigiri we had were dry aged selections, so not the most traditional, but delicious nonetheless. We did have an issue with our seating - our reservation was for 7pm but we didn't get sat until 7:45, and did not order until well after 8 (after the group beside us who had a reservation at 8pm). We ended up being the last group there and last call for further a la carte orders or drinks happened while we were still having our omakase. The server team was amazing, and don't fault them at all- really appreciated their warmth and good vibes! However, I tend to get a bit hangry, so running an hour behind reservation time in an omakase type setting is not ideal, and actually led to a lot of drinking on an empty stomach for many in our party- also not ideal. I think overall a nice addition to the Dallas sushi scene, but would give them some time to work out some logistical flow. read more

I gotta give it to Chef Sunny, I NEVER leave hungry when eating his food. Kawa continues the trend of Omakase in DFW. I would say Chef Sunny's sushi is a mix between traditional and modern. The toppings used does nicely compliment the fish without overpowering the flavor. Overall the sushi is good. I want to come back and try the special omakase meal where Chef Sunny mixes in other types of cuisines (more than just Japanese). read more

We had an early dinner at 4pm on Saturday. Surprisingly, we had the entire place to ourselves till 5pm when other parties started showing up. We tried the omakase set and our chef was very nice. Sadly, the food was underwhelming and I had high expectations after all the reviews. The edamame was dry and hot tasting (cooked salmon) was a bit dry. All the sashimi was pretty good and prepared at the counter in front of us. I would recommend going for a la carte sashimi sushi and skipping the omakase set. read more

Outstanding. Love the space, it's upscale, aesthetically beautiful and calming. From service to food, I was unexpectedly blown away. I scheduled a massage next door, and picked Kawa for convenience, I'm so glad I did! The sashimi was so fresh, flavorful, and melty. The hand rolls! I'll dream of them. Okay, I know it's not technically in Collin County--but it's just a short drive away, and so worth it!! My husband and I came here for our anniversary, and this place is hands-down the BEST sushi and handroll experience I've ever had--and I've had a lot domestically and internationally. I'll be more shocked if this place doesn't get recognized by Michelin by the end of the year. Chef Sonny and his wife run the restaurant together. You're not just at another table, you're part of the experience. But the food... OH MY GOODNESS!!! The fish is flown in from Japan on a 2-day turnaround and aged to absolute perfection. Every bite, from sushi to handroll, even to dessert, has so many layers from texture and taste, it's quite unforgettable. Clearly, well thought out and refined. Two bites I'm still dreaming about: 1. The uni crispy seaweed roll - briny, crunchy, and insanely good 2. The inari truffle toro caviar - rich, buttery, luxurious... just wow. I highly recommend you try them in this order. The crispy crunch from the first with the cloud like from the second is a combination that still has my mouth watering. This is more than a sushi / handroll bar--it's a full-on experience, and I'd honestly be shocked if they don't earn a Michelin star within the year. PS. Rice not cooked well, not at the right temperature, not well seasoned. Fish fresh but flavors not on point. The value is the most disappointing . $9-$18 a la carte one piece of sushi. I am actually glad I didnt try their omakase since sushis I tried a la carte didnt meet my expectations. Handrolls were good the first bite but then they put all these crunchy stuff in ALL handrolls. Try everything on the menu if you can! I only got the smallest portion of the omakase and a few sashimi selections from the menu. Wow!! I love sushi and this place was absolutely amazing. We didn't do the omakase but will definitely go back for that! We split the 6 hand rolls and I had the best piece of UNI I've ever had in my life. The service is impeccable! The hostess who sat us explained the entire menu. Or server, Nott, was so sweet and we ordered a bottle of wine which was explained to us and presented perfectly. They always served the me before my husband which I commend as well. Each hand roll was unbelievable. It's not your typical hand roll set with just fish. The seaweed was exceptionally crispy, the added elements for flavor (yuzu) crunch (toasted quinoa I believe) were a perfect combo. The space is perfect for a date night! Quiet, calm, nice music. All the servers dress in a white collared shirt with a vest and a tie. Make sure you reserve a spot at the sushi bar, it's the best place to get a personal presentation and explanation of what you are having! This restaurant exceeded our expectations! The ambiance was perfect for a late-afternoon lunch, and the service was excellent. I can't say enough good things about the food! The food was played in very unique ways, which made the experience quite elevated. We ordered the mid-tier omakase, and our server and sushi chef both explained each new item expertly. Chef Jun beautifully presented each piece of sushi and told us about the type of fish, and how it was cured and prepared. Every bite was flavorful and surprising!
