Keens was exactly what we expected. And that's good. The mutton and escarole were perfect. Mushroom soup was brilliant. 25 year Armagnac lived up to it's $37 price. I finally came here to try the mutton chops and it did not disappoint. Much better than the filet mignon, well seasoned. It was a little tough to eat given the bones but what can you expect. It was so big that I could only eat half. It comes with veggies that are doused in vinaigrette perhaps? It was a little too sour for my taste. It also comes with mint jelly but I forgot to try it. We had the mashed potatoes (silky) and roasted cauliflower/broccoli, which were good but I don't know that it was necessary and it's a small dish. I had a glass of The Bedrock Zinfandel at their recommendation which worked well enough although I might try something else next time. I had the coffee cantina for dessert which is a sundae. I'm not a big fan of Sundae but the fact that it was coffee ice cream helped to elevate it for me. This is a classic nyc steakhouse, the 2nd oldest in fact. The place is on the darker side, with tons of memorabilia everywhere, including the ceilings. They are covered in clay pipes, the ones that are now really popular to find on the sides of English rivers...I wish I had learned more about them. They have many rooms on 2 different floors. The service is 5 stars all the way! Very attentive, and friendly servers who know the menu very well. The food... we ordered the taste of mutton, and it was fantastic..5+stars... no gamey flavor at all. My mistake was to have it as an appetizer with the bacon and shishito peppers. They do not hold a candle to it, understandably.. don't make this mistake. Order the apps, then the mutton, then the steak, and don't sleep on the dessert.. but I'm getting ahead of myself. The arugula salad that came with the thick cut bacon was incredible! Yes, just greens with with a delicate dressing, amazing! The peppers were fine, nothing incredible. Oh, the mint jelly that goes with the mutton, it's so good. It wasn't very sweet, and did in fact complement the motion very well. The sirloin steak was perfectly cooked and tasted good. First time here and definitely worth the hype! Everything we had from start to finish was excellent. The star of the show was the porterhouse steak. Amazing flavor and cooked perfectly. We also shared the mashed potatoes and creamed spinach sides. They went perfectly with the porterhouse but also were fabulous standouts on their own. The meal was paced perfectly, service was great, and I loved looking around at all the decor and art/artifacts including the ceiling covered in pipes. Went for lunch with some friends who were specifically recommended the chateaubriand steak. I had heard about the old NYC steakhouses for a while and it was fun to have an occasion check one out. Apparently it's the second oldest one in the city. The place was pretty busy for a Monday lunch and we had a reservation. Decor felt like we were transported to back to the 80s and our server was telling us fun facts about how Babe Ruth would go eat there after games. He also gave us each a little match box with one of the paintings on the front, which made a nice souvenir. There was also an extensive collection of clay pipes on the ceiling. Now finally for the food, the Chateaubriand steak came with the sauces. The red wine was my personal favorite which paired well with the perfectly cooked steak. I would have liked it just a tad more seasoned, but depending on the sauce, it was still great. We were initially told it was huge, so it was not as big as I had expected. The salad and veggies were good, but not particularly memorable. We also got a bottle of classic Chianti red which was great with our meal and ended with some cappuccino and affogato. Keen's is known as a true New York institution and one of the oldest restaurants in the entire city that's still operating. There is no way to argue to that it's a historical landmark and taking a tour while waiting for main courses is just as entertaining as the meal itself. There is a pipe collection, spanning notable figures from presidents to Buffalo Bill, there are endless artworks like the lovely Mrs Keen, rooms are named after notable figures and antique items decorate any remotely empty corner. There is one dish that Keen's is known for: Mutton Chop. This massive chunk of bone in lamb is every bit as pleasing as it sounds. Thus, coming hungry is a must. Wines are extremely reasonably priced, many bottles at 2x or less retail, so coming here is a wonderful moment to try something notable. In my case, Chatenauf Du Pape was a perfect paring for the mutton. After so many years being open here, it feels odd to critique things, but nonetheless an area where Keens seems to need a bit of polishing is on the service side. A bit sporadic and while everyone certainly works very hard, the volume of servers is simply insufficient for the size of the establishment. That translates into rushed interactions, flagging down and substantial wait times. With all that said, Keens is an excellent establishment. It's the treasure of dining in what is, effectively, a museum. Thus, book a dinner here and do so well ahead of time. read more

Exceptional service from start to finish. We both ordered a glass of red wine, pinot noir and cabernet sauvignon. There is nowhere else quite like Keens. From the moment you walk in, the hospitality is world-class, and the old-school, cozy atmosphere makes you feel like you've stepped back in history. Seeing all the pipes and historic photos on the walls is such a cool experience. We came with a large group and were seated at a great round table, which made sharing family-style so easy. We started with the complimentary bread and crudités. The vegetables were so fresh (the carrots were huge), and the blue cheese dip they came with was absolutely delicious. I ordered the 'Taste of Mutton' (the perfect half-portion size) which came with escarole and mint jelly - it was legendary for a reason. My friends' Porterhouse and T-bone steaks were also phenomenal. For the sides, we loaded up on the creamed spinach, hash browns, fries, and mushrooms, all of which were delicious. But the biggest surprise was dessert! I'm a huge cheesecake lover, but the Carrot Cake was the true winner of the night. Keen's is my favorite steakhouse. Every celebration, whether birthday, anniversary, or simply welcoming visitors to the city, is spent at Keen's. Indeed, this establishment exudes a celebratory air. The interior itself is historical, a monument to old New York. The staff are friendly and highly trained. The food, of course, is delicious. Speaking of which, let's talk food!. You simply can't come here and not try the steak. The King's Cut Prime Rib is a favorite. In fact, it's my favorite steak in the city. Prepared medium rare, it is juicy, tender, and flavorful. Another favorite is the shrimp cocktail. It's fresh, served cold, and hefty: Each shrimp is satisfyingly plump. I also enjoy their fries. It's perfectly crisp on the outside but soft and potato-ey on the inside. And if you know me, you know that my ideal fries are a combination of those two. If you come here for just the steak and the fries, you will be entirely satisfied. I'm afraid I've gotten ahead of myself. Each meal comes with a complimentary bread basket and crudité. Both are wonderful. The blue cheese dip that comes with the crudité is perfectly funky and not at all too overpowering - and that's coming from someone who doesn't like blue cheese! If you have time, check out all the smoke pipes signed by famous people. There are so many different dining rooms here. We had to go up some stairs. We had dinner at Keens Steakhouse after hearing a lot of great things from locals, and overall, it was a really enjoyable experience. The place has that classic New York charm dim lighting, wood-paneled walls, and a warm, old-school steakhouse atmosphere that feels like stepping back in time. We started with the wedge salad, which came loaded with bacon and tomatoes. It was excellent crisp and fresh. It did have a bit too much dressing for my wife's liking (I didn't mind it), but overall, it hit the spot. For the main course, we ordered the surf and turf with sides of mushrooms and a baked potato. The steak was good definitely above average but the lobster completely stole the show. It had this natural sweetness to it that was just incredible, probably one of the best lobsters I've ever had. The mushrooms were another must-order rich and full of flavor. The baked potato, though, was a little dry and could've used some olive oil and sea salt rubbed in for that perfect texture. The wine list was the only area that left me wanting a bit more. I wish they had a stronger selection of California and Napa wines, but they did have a Carmenere which you don't see very often and it was fantastic. We ended up having a few glasses and really enjoyed it. For dessert, we went with the cheesecake, and it was the perfect way to wrap things up creamy, smooth, and not overly sweet. One of the coolest parts of the restaurant is its history. They actually have a wall dedicated to Abraham Lincoln and even display the actual blood-stained playbill he was holding the night he was assassinated. It's one of those small but incredible details that makes Keens so unique. Overall, Keens Steakhouse absolutely delivers on atmosphere, history, and great food. The roasted slices of squash and bell peppers on the side had a light char that added a lovely aroma; and paired with the sauce underneath, the whole dish worked very well together. + KEEN'S CREAMED SPINACH: Tasty for the first few bites, but too heavy to finish between the two of us, especially since the entrees were already quite rich. If Abraham Lincoln can write a not-so-positive review of Ford's Theater in D.C. ("got shot here, didn't like it"), he should definitely have positive things to say about Keens Steakhouse. The history in of itself is worth the visit, whether you're seated in the primary dining room or the side bar. I was located at the former and had plenty of pipes on the ceiling as well as memorabilia on the walls to enjoy. As for the food, the prime ribeye for two is too good for words. It was perfectly cooked, and I could taste the salt/char the next day as I boarded the plane back to Colorado. This was also my first time trying creamed spinach, which (not shockingly) was delicious. That, a glass of wine, and some mashed potatoes, and you've got a happy camper. Note that because we had an 8pm show to catch, we didn't stick around for dessert, which I regret. But that just gives me an excuse to come back for more. read more

My favorites were the bacon appetizer which came with thick bacon and I was a fan of their porterhouse steak for two medium rare and ask for their keen sauce. Their mutton chops was also their specialty and it was delicious and I would order it again. The prime rib was pretty good but not sure I would order it again. There is some bar seating along the back wall and one lonely table in a corner. I decided to sit at that solo table. There was a bar menu on the table. I've picked what I wanted to drink and walked up to the bar. I waited for the bartender to acknowledge me. He he took my drink order and said he would bring it to me. We visited Keen's Steakhouse while in New York. The ambiance was pretty dark. There weren't many windows. The whole ceiling is decorated with the pipe collection of Albert Keen. The wood and even table remind me of an older time in history. Apparently, this place is full of history (a time where this was a restaurant for only men to go to before women fought in courts to be allowed in). This place is apparently famous for their mutton which they offer with a side of mint jelly. I am not a big fan of lamb so I found this dish very gammy tasting. The mint jelly was amazing on the side, however. The waiter was really nice and walked us through the entire menu. They gave us some fresh bread rolls for the table, as well as, carrots/cucumbers which were put on ice. I really like how it made it taste fresher. I also liked the dip it came with. The steak I ended up getting was the prime T bone steak. It was average at best. I really didn't get the hype with the steak. My boyfriend got the King Cut. It was so big but I really liked the sauce it came with. We ended the night with great dessert. While I didn't like the entrees, the desserts were amazing. We got the hot fudge sundae and New York cheese cake. I really liked how the sundae had nuts on top with a warm drizzle of chocolate. The New York cheese cake was so smooth. My husband and I had dinner at Keens Steakhouse yesterday, an early, pre-theater dinner. I'd had Keens on my list to try for a long time after noticing that it consistency popped up on restaurant lists. It's not hard to see why Keens makes an impression. It's been open since 1885 and is considered the last remaining structure of the Herald Square Theatre District. It's not everyday that you eat at a restaurant with this much history. It's even rarer that a restaurant with this much history has been able to retain so much character and history over the years. Keens is still a stunner. We ate in the Abraham Lincoln room. It's all dark woods and gallery walls and tradition. The waiters are dressed traditionally (suits), the tables are traditional (white tablecloth places can still be cool), etc. It definitely has a vibe, but it's not stuffy and people were dressed comfortably (and not formally). None of the history would matter if the restaurant weren't good, if the food wasn't great. James Beard had great things to say about in 1950 and Jonathan Gold in 2001 and Frank Bruni in 2007, so I was pretty sure it was going to be a great meal. It was. I started with a dry vodka martini, which came just in time to enjoy with the bread and butter and crudite and blue cheese dip they brought to the table. Then we had the iced shrimp cocktail, which was classic and great (their cocktail sauce was little bit different - maybe more Worcestershire? - I loved it). Then we shared the charred shishito peppers, for another light dish - so we could save room for the main attraction... Then it was time for what is labeled on the menu as "Our Legendary Mutton Chop." It comes with escarole. I don't know how something so simple is this delicious but it is. the mutton was delicious and the escarole surprised me. Classics are a classic for a reason, right? The dish totally lived up to its reputation. For dessert, we could not pass up their Butterscotch Sundae, and I'm so glad we ordered it. It was one of those dishes that takes you back to childhood - so simple, so nostalgic. I thought about my grandfather and how much he would enjoy this dish - maybe I'll have to try to make him a version. The service was great - really friendly and helpful. They checked on us, asked if the cook was good on everything, if we were enjoying everything. And we were. They really made the experience feel special. We were greeted by friendly staff who brought us to our table, which was situated in a booth in the back. Perfect setting for an intimate dinner. I've come to Keens off and on since 2020 and it has always delivered! The keens house red wine and ale are both very good. The free carrots, celery, and bread are a nice touch. The burgers and fries are very good. The service is always friendly and attentive. The pub vibe is energetic and not that formal. I was just there and there used to be so much cheese that I could dip my fries in it but those time both the blue cheese and cheddar were just enough for the burgers which was a bit disappointing. The fries were also a bit too salty when they've always been perfect before. I'm hoping it was just a fluke because I've been there at least 6 other times when everything was perfect. Great spot! Ten years ago, I would've told you to go to Keens for the steak and the experience. Now I'd be inclined to tell you just to go for the experience. We went for lunch recently and everything was simply okay. Granted, we ordered more lunch-like items (a steak sandwich and a French dip) but everything was simply alright and pretty expensive. If you're going for a big steak dinner, it can be great- I've had their mutton and their filet mignon- but unless you're going to go big, you can get similar quality elsewhere for way cheaper. Limeade Spritzer: This refreshing bubbly beverage had a lime base and was topped with a mint leaf. I could have sipped this all day. Prime Sliced Sirlion Steak: The 8-ounce steak was cooked medium rare and served with French fries and house made steak sauce. The sirloin was very tender and juicy; there were no complaints from my end. The steak sauce had a tangy, chunky texture. It wasn't my favorite sauce because I prefer a smoother consistency, but it was good enough. Aside from their phenomenal cut of meat, this steakhouse also has a rich history. The lobby has two display cases of smoking pipes, which once belonged to members of the Pipe Club. All participants paid an annual fee to store their smoking utensil at this restaurant; whenever they arrived, their pipe was waiting. Michael Jackson, Douglas MacArthur, Herbert Hoover and many other high profile figures belonged to the club. On your way to the upper level, be sure to peruse the political cartoons. The top floor is also decorated with lots of wall art, such as photos of Abraham Lincoln. One framed artifact contains the playbill the president was holding at the time of his assassination in Fords Theater. 2 stars this time around.... Disappointed that I was underwhelmed my third time around at Keens because I always recommended this steakhouse to NYC visitors. Our experience was subpar as our waiter was very inattentive - I ended up still tipping $46 for an experience where I had to drink out of my partner's glass for water since I only got one refill toward the end of my dining experience. It was also difficult to wave her down for additional items. Our waiter also didn't note our order down on a notepad, so our table ended up getting two items wrong. A part of me is always bothered when my table recites a long order, and the waiter doesn't note it down, only to get items wrong.... We ordered a Caesar salad for the table and instead got an individual portion. We also ordered sautéed spinach, but received creamed spinach at the table. The Caesar salad was bland and nothing special - so a small portion in this case we didn't bother to correct our waiter. It was a disappointing and underwhelming salad.. The porterhouse steak for 3 was not worth the $170+ price point - we ordered it medium rare, and it was very inconsistent with how it was cooked. The steak ended up being more rare on different parts of the steak.. The highlights of the night were the quieter and historic ambiance upstairs, the grand porterhouse steak with sauces (when parts were actually medium rare), complimentary bread with butter, complimentary vegetable crudite, and the excellent French fries. The sides of the sautéed spinach and cauliflower were nothing special, but were priced at $36 collectively... It's good for steak and fries...but at $300, I expected a better experience and better salad and sides. read more

Well, I didn't expect the change to happen so quickly but It has my king's cut prime rib had to be returned to the kitchen overcooked such a waste. Unfortunately that did not improve the texture or the flavor Sad to see a classic, go by the wayside. read more

Called in for a lunch reservation and was lucky enough to get a 2 PM same day reservation during Christmastime. Great News- little has changed at this amazing steakhouse since the 1990s!!! Prime Rib King Cut was HUGE and worthy. Rooms have not changed- bar for very casual dining, rest of first floor for business, and 2nd Flood for fine dining. I would rank Keens steaks way above Luger's and they do not automatically cut the steak before serving it. Service at my table and the table next to ours was a bit slow, but understandable given the crowd. The atmosphere is always great and special around Christmas! Great place to bring tourist friends to show them possibly one of a few old- style NYC steak houses left in Manhattan. read more

Had a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner here!!!! It was a pre set menu that we got to choose an appetizer, meat & dessert and it came with all of the sides family style! Best prime rib of my life- get it rare, TRUST! It was soooo flavorful & delicious the next morning too. Appetizers were wonderful- shrimp were so big & fresh! The filet was incredible- such a great hickory smoke flavor. Enjoyed trying the mutton chop but prime rib was definitely the star here. Service was impeccable- truly made the dining experience so wonderful. Our waiter was very attentive & personable, gave us a historical tour of the restaurant after our meal too! The ambiance was amazing. I think this might be my favorite steakhouse in the city for the ambiance, food & history!!! Will definitely be back. My dad absolutely raved about this spot too! read more

Ran over after a show to meet some friends for a late dinner. Service was great! Ordered the legendary Mutton! It was delicious. Will definitely have to come back and try a steak next time. Great steak house! We were all way too full for dessert after. But somehow still managed to split a few bites. No trouble getting a table late on a weekday.
