First time here and definitely worth the hype! Everything we had from start to finish was excellent. The star of the show was the porterhouse steak. Amazing flavor and cooked perfectly. We also shared the mashed potatoes and creamed spinach sides. They went perfectly with the porterhouse but also were fabulous standouts on their own. The meal was paced perfectly, service was great, and I loved looking around at all the decor and art/artifacts including the ceiling covered in pipes. Definitely would come back and highly recommend if you want a traditional old school steak house experience.

Returned for dinner to try the pub menu. My friend and I walked in at the bar at 5:30 PM and it was totally packed! Got seats after 20 mins though. Vibes are fantastic. As for the drinks/food - gin martini was very good, and the prime sirloin steak salad was great. Hamburger with fries was solid.

Went for lunch with some friends who were specifically recommended the chateaubriand steak. I had heard about the old NYC steakhouses for a while and it was fun to have an occasion check one out. Apparently it's the second oldest one in the city. The place was pretty busy for a Monday lunch and we had a reservation. Decor felt like we were transported to back to the 80s and our server was telling us fun facts about how Babe Ruth would go eat there after games. He also gave us each a little match box with one of the paintings on the front, which made a nice souvenir. There was also an extensive collection of clay pipes on the ceiling. Now finally for the food, the Chateaubriand steak came with the sauces. The red wine was my personal favorite which paired well with the perfectly cooked steak. I would have liked it just a tad more seasoned, but depending on the sauce, it was still great. We were initially told it was huge, so it was not as big as I had expected. The salad and veggies were good, but not particularly memorable. We also got a bottle of classic Chianti red which was great with our meal and ended with some cappuccino and affogato. Had a great time with friends and I'd definitely want to try the mutton next time.

Keens is one of the quintessential New York steakhouses that consistently delivers quality food and a wonderful experience. Their steak is juicy and cooked to perfection, and I really liked their affogato as it was a very simple but effective espresso shot paired with vanilla ice cream. Not pictured here but highly recommend the mutton chop, so juicy and tender and an ample portion for one or two people.

Celebrated my husband's birthday here. Our reservation was at 7:30pm, we waited a few minutes and were seated at a corner table. Dimly lit ambiance and old school vibe. Exceptional service from start to finish. We both ordered a glass of red wine, pinot noir and cabernet sauvignon. Complimentary bread and veggies (carrots, celery, and pickles) on the side was also provided. We started with the iceberg lettuce wedge which was very good. We shared the prime porterhouse for two, creamed spinach, and hash browns. Food was solid. For dessert we had the hot fudge sundae, highly recommend ordering this. Excellent spot to check out at least once. I've had better steak elsewhere. I would come back and check out the bar, this place was pretty busy even on a Monday.

We shared: 1. Mutton Chops 2. Prime Porterhouse for two 3. Sauteed Field Mushrooms & Creamed Spinach Complimentary bread was dry. Long Island iced tea was good. Famed mutton chops were tender and flavorful. Porterhouse was mixed... Tender, cooked medium rare as requested but bland on the NY strip side. Mushrooms and creamed spinach were solid. Service was subpar. Never came back to check on us after bringing the food. Had to find someone for the check. As a tourist, next time I come back to NYC, I'd rather try a new steakhouse. But the mutton chops are worth a try if you're really curious.

Wow I haven't been here in years and glad I came back. The food service and drinks were amazing. We had the burger, steak, salad, 2 drinks and a dessert that our waitress recommended that I will definitely get again. Pricing for the steak here is great compared to other spots imo. Will definitely come back anytime I have an event to go to in MSG cus why pay for food there when you can get way better here and spend the same amount.

There is nowhere else quite like Keens. From the moment you walk in, the hospitality is world-class, and the old-school, cozy atmosphere makes you feel like you've stepped back in history. Seeing all the pipes and historic photos on the walls is such a cool experience. We came with a large group and were seated at a great round table, which made sharing family-style so easy. We started with the complimentary bread and crudités. The vegetables were so fresh (the carrots were huge), and the blue cheese dip they came with was absolutely delicious. I ordered the 'Taste of Mutton' (the perfect half-portion size) which came with escarole and mint jelly - it was legendary for a reason. My friends' Porterhouse and T-bone steaks were also phenomenal. For the sides, we loaded up on the creamed spinach, hash browns, fries, and mushrooms, all of which were delicious. But the biggest surprise was dessert! I'm a huge cheesecake lover, but the Carrot Cake was the true winner of the night. It was incredibly hearty with plenty of nuts and a thick, rich cream cheese frosting. An absolutely great evening and can't wait to come back!

Took advantage of a winter storm to get a spot at Keen's 2nd floor. This place is a classic steakhouse at its optimal. Old school seating and bars makes you feel like you're in a different era. The star of my meal was certainly the King's Cut Prime Rib. Cooked to my preference of rare, it certainly met its name but full of flavor. I ended the meal with one of the best carrot cakes I've had. Perfectly moist and full of flavor. I especially liked the icing. Not to end the review without a shoutout to my waiter. She was exceptional - making a number of recommendations and being super friendly.

Keens, the legendary, consistently serves remarkably tender, flavorful, and perfectly charred Prime Porterhouse and Mutton Chops. While there are many great steakhouses in New York City, we firmly believe that Keens is the one and only nostalgic steakhouse that truly embodies the essence of a classic NYC venue. Carson D. and staff warmly welcomed and greeted us with the distinct charm of New Yorkers, who are fiercely down-to-earth, deeply unpretentious, and a great friendly attitude. It will always be our top choice when we're taking our special guests for a traditional steakhouse dining experience. Tips: Reservations is a must, as it's super busy and packed even on a Monday night! We made our reservation 30 days in advance ensuring our long-distance visitors get to this unique experience! Don't forget the cheesecake and baked potato serving with butter or house made sour cream, which were a classic representation as well!

I've heard about the legendary keens for ages, and it is indeed legendary. The mutton chop was... amazing! It's so hard to find a place that does lamb well and this place definitely does! Cooked to perfected and very tender. Not gamey at all. Their dry aged steak was also sooo tender and sublime. You can definitely taste the dry age. For dessert, the sundae is a must! What a sight! The perfect hot fudge sundae with their fresh whipped cream. Not too sweet surprisingly Old school vibes. Classic establishment. Good service. Definitely a must go

Keen's is my favorite steakhouse. Every celebration, whether birthday, anniversary, or simply welcoming visitors to the city, is spent at Keen's. Indeed, this establishment exudes a celebratory air. The interior itself is historical, a monument to old New York. The staff are friendly and highly trained. The food, of course, is delicious. Speaking of which, let's talk food!. You simply can't come here and not try the steak. The King's Cut Prime Rib is a favorite. In fact, it's my favorite steak in the city. Prepared medium rare, it is juicy, tender, and flavorful. Another favorite is the shrimp cocktail. It's fresh, served cold, and hefty: Each shrimp is satisfyingly plump. I also enjoy their fries. It's perfectly crisp on the outside but soft and potato-ey on the inside. And if you know me, you know that my ideal fries are a combination of those two. If you come here for just the steak and the fries, you will be entirely satisfied. I'm afraid I've gotten ahead of myself. Each meal comes with a complimentary bread basket and crudité. Both are wonderful. The blue cheese dip that comes with the crudité is perfectly funky and not at all too overpowering - and that's coming from someone who doesn't like blue cheese! Of course, if you feel like finishing the night with dessert, I can recommend their banana's fosters, key lime pie, and carrot cake. All are fantastic. Well, I think I've said enough here. Try this place. You won't regret it.

Wonderful food and service. Had a 9:00 reservation. Drinks were wonderful. I was seated quickly. The another was quite loud. The restaurant itself was unique. The Mutton chop was quite fatty. They even presented it to SHOW the fat! But let's move on to the positives. The waiters were wonderful. The drinks were amazing and not watery or too strong. The cheese cake was exceptional! Everything was yummy! Perhaps a steak next I'm in New York.

Ask the Community - Keens Steakhouse

Do they have sauces such as bernaise and bordelaise?

Yes, they have at least 3 sauces: bernaise, mustard, and Red wine sauce

Is there a bar area at Keens?

Yes. A really nice bar as you walk in the bar is to the right. It is beautiful, cozy and you feel as if you stepped back in time. Staff is sharp.

    Are reservations needed?

Best to reserve because place is heavily booked.

What is the dress code? Are jeans acceptable?

Smart casual. Jeans are totally fine.

Are the steaks served on the table on hot plates ? I was disappointed when i went to Quality Meats and steaks were served on cold plates, at best steak was maybe warm but that…

steaks came on cold plates. btw. Quality Meats is way better than Keens

Do they allow dogs in their outdoor section?

The last time we were there in December there was no outdoor area open. Better to call them directly to see if they've reopened this space.

Can they allow us to bring our own bottles?

Yes. Yes they do. It a $30 charge to bring your own bottle

Does Keens have a kid menu?

Not really... but they do have a Pub menu that you can order from in both the Grill Room and the Pub Room. It has hamburgers, steak sandwiches and other things that are smaller portions than the Grill menu. You may be able to look it up on line.… Read more

    Are reservations needed?

I would certainly make a reservation especially for a weekend time.

    What is the dress code?

Jeans and a nice shirt will do! Or if you feel like dressing up go for it but most people don't.

    Can I do take out?

Yes. Call ahead to place an order.

When/why did the name change from Keen's CHOPHOUSE to Keen's Steakhouse? I havn't been there in about 7-10years, but recent photos make the Mutton chop presentation appear neater but far less impressive in the past...what has changed?

YEP portions are much smaller than in the past

Has anyone dined recently? Just wanted to get an idea of what outdoor dining is like. Are there sufficient heaters? Plexiglass, etc?

Under an extended hut. Each table gets individual heaters which are really warm. Went for a lunch and it was roughly 40 degrees. And it was comfortable. Enjoy (if you go!)

    Does Keens take credit cards?

Yes, it isn't like crazy Peter Lugers lol

Are there shareable options for the steak?

Yes -- they have the porterhouse for 2 or 3. We ordered the one for 3 and also the mutton -- both served in the center of the table, easy for a group of 6 to share.

Does Keen's still have the pub sized mutton chop on their menu?

    Yes they sure do!

Is there a particular room my family of 4 should request to be seated in?

I think the upstairs dining room is more memorable. Get a drink downstairs while you wait!

Is there parking nearby to Keens & MSG?

    Yes. Lots near MSG.
