Keens was exactly what we expected. And that's good. The mutton and escarole were perfect. Mushroom soup was brilliant. 25 year Armagnac lived up to it's $37 price. Walking into this feels like walking into a place of history. It has the feel of classic upscale Americana - you can easily imagine important meetings happening at a location just like this. And considering this restaurant has been around since 1885, they likely happened here itself. The cigar smoke that once clouded the halls have been replaced with a more casual ambience - particularly at lunch, where I found myself. Still though, the various halls, stairs, and old framed pictures and art that hang give you the feeling that you sit where those who made the decisions once sat. And I find that really cool. So ultimately this is still a restaurant. Despite being a steakhouse, they're most known for their mutton chop - something that comes in a 26 oz, gigantic saddle cut that includes both the loin and the tenderloin of a sheep. I was by myself this meal - so there was no way I was getting that. Thankfully - and this is something I really appreciate - they offer a 10 oz version of the same iconic dish, known as the Taste of Mutton, for a much smaller price. Don't have much to add on the bread/butter that came out first. Both were relatively standard. Then came the mutton chop, which I asked to be cooked medium. The first thing that was clear was they left the au jus under the meat, which I appreciate. It provided a fantastic dipping/mixing combination for the salad also present on the plate. This was quite good. The cook was basically perfect, as essentially all the fat rendered really well. Most of the fat is concentrated on the two belly flaps on either side, and the loin part is on the leaner side, but I didn't think this harmed it too much. As far as the taste, I'd describe it as more similar to steak than I thought. I was expecting something on the gamier side closer to duck, but this felt a lot more like steak tenderloin than anything else. It was pretty juicy at every point - not really being dry at all - and I got a lot of umami from it. There were a few downsides though. One is that the crust was pretty lacking. I was expecting dark brown and a char from the high-heat broiler used, but what I got was more glossy, medium-brown, and shiny. It didn't feel special texture wise at all, and the texture wasn't really there. Also, it wasn't seasoned with enough salt. I had to add a lot more from the salt shaker on my table. Something that really helped was the mint jelly. This might be the best condiment I've ever been given on a cut of meat. The mint flavor works so well with the sweetness of the jelly. It's not like mint ice cream - it's kind of like a really clear and good-tasting toothpaste, if that makes sense. But it pairs amazingly well with the rich, umami, fatty meat. The combination of this condiment on the mutton was ridiculously addicting. I paid around 45 in total including tax/tip for this chop. I'd say the taste of mutton is enough for one person, including the bread that you also get. On the expensive side, but glad that this exists so I don't have to get the full thing. Overall, it's an iconic place that still retains its old stature, and makes some high-quality food still, although I was more impressed by the environment than the dish. 8.75/10 read more

Seafood tower: avoid it. It was not fresh and the oysters and clams tasted very fishy. Bacon was very salty as expected, but no complaints 1 hour passes and we still did not receive or main courses. I asked multiple times where our food was, and it finally all arrives lukewarm/cold. We ordered the mutton chops, chateaubriand, and porterhouse for 3 in addition to 5 sides. Everything was cooked perfectly, but we all agreed it would have tasted better hot. The kicker was our french fries were ice cold. The steak and lamb chop could be a little dry, but overall extremely good and delicious. The lamb chop was cut weirdly, where some slices were pure fat, others no fat, so I had to pair different slices together. There was also a bone provided with lots of meat on it, but I wasn't super sure how to get it off. The sides and desserts were all show stoppers (thick cut bacon, lobster bisque, mashed potatoes, and carrot cake). I finally came here to try the mutton chops and it did not disappoint. Much better than the filet mignon, well seasoned. It was a little tough to eat given the bones but what can you expect. It was so big that I could only eat half. It comes with veggies that are doused in vinaigrette perhaps? It was a little too sour for my taste. It also comes with mint jelly but I forgot to try it. We had the mashed potatoes (silky) and roasted cauliflower/broccoli, which were good but I don't know that it was necessary and it's a small dish. I had a glass of The Bedrock Zinfandel at their recommendation which worked well enough although I might try something else next time. I had the coffee cantina for dessert which is a sundae. I'm not a big fan of Sundae but the fact that it was coffee ice cream helped to elevate it for me. Went for lunch with some friends who were specifically recommended the chateaubriand steak. I had heard about the old NYC steakhouses for a while and it was fun to have an occasion check one out. Apparently it's the second oldest one in the city. The place was pretty busy for a Monday lunch and we had a reservation. Decor felt like we were transported to back to the 80s and our server was telling us fun facts about how Babe Ruth would go eat there after games. He also gave us each a little match box with one of the paintings on the front, which made a nice souvenir. There was also an extensive collection of clay pipes on the ceiling. Now finally for the food, the Chateaubriand steak came with the sauces. The red wine was my personal favorite which paired well with the perfectly cooked steak. I would have liked it just a tad more seasoned, but depending on the sauce, it was still great. We were initially told it was huge, so it was not as big as I had expected. The salad and veggies were good, but not particularly memorable. We also got a bottle of classic Chianti red which was great with our meal and ended with some cappuccino and affogato. Keen's is known as a true New York institution and one of the oldest restaurants in the entire city that's still operating. There is no way to argue to that it's a historical landmark and taking a tour while waiting for main courses is just as entertaining as the meal itself. There is a pipe collection, spanning notable figures from presidents to Buffalo Bill, there are endless artworks like the lovely Mrs Keen, rooms are named after notable figures and antique items decorate any remotely empty corner. There is one dish that Keen's is known for: Mutton Chop. This massive chunk of bone in lamb is every bit as pleasing as it sounds. Thus, coming hungry is a must. Wines are extremely reasonably priced, many bottles at 2x or less retail, so coming here is a wonderful moment to try something notable. In my case, Chatenauf Du Pape was a perfect paring for the mutton. After so many years being open here, it feels odd to critique things, but nonetheless an area where Keens seems to need a bit of polishing is on the service side. A bit sporadic and while everyone certainly works very hard, the volume of servers is simply insufficient for the size of the establishment. That translates into rushed interactions, flagging down and substantial wait times. With all that said, Keens is an excellent establishment. It's the treasure of dining in what is, effectively, a museum. Thus, book a dinner here and do so well ahead of time. read more

Our evening at Keens was ruined by manager Ira Freehof's hostile and inexplicable behavior. Thirty minutes into dinner, a server (not ours) asked whether my wife was okay. We were confused, but the question made her uncomfortable, so she decided to not have drinks. About 1 hour later, we requested a wine glass. Ira appeared 5 mins later, took the glass away and yelled "She cannot drink!" He repeatedly claimed my wife was extremely drunk and unable to walk, which was completely false. She literally had just walked normally to the bathroom in front of him. I stood up and respectfully asked him whether we did something wrong and said we have no intention to disrespect anyone. He kept yelling uncontrolled and instead of communicating told me he'd take all of our drinks away, as if he is talking to a child. We asked for the check, tipped our server and left. None of us had ever had an experience like this at a restaurant, and nothing about our behavior we know of justified this treatment. We never got to understand what was going on. I believe our server did not either. Either Ira was confusing things, or there was another issue he refused to explain and he was creating an excuse through my wife. Given our etiquette was questioned last night; I would invite this person to check his own that is all public and online. The person who was lying to me last night was lying to his investors about his $700k tax debt to raise funds for a restaurant he'd bankrupt within months of opening. We refused to stoop to the level he was trying to drag us down, and we will not return to Keens that seems to host this person. read more

They are covered in clay pipes, the ones that are now really popular to find on the sides of English rivers...I wish I had learned more about them. They have many rooms on 2 different floors. The service is 5 stars all the way! Very attentive, and friendly servers who know the menu very well. The food... we ordered the taste of mutton, and it was fantastic..5+stars... no gamey flavor at all. My mistake was to have it as an appetizer with the bacon and shishito peppers. They do not hold a candle to it, understandably.. don't make this mistake. Order the apps, then the mutton, then the steak, and don't sleep on the dessert.. but I'm getting ahead of myself. The arugula salad that came with the thick cut bacon was incredible! Yes, just greens with with a delicate dressing, amazing! The peppers were fine, nothing incredible. Another favorite is the shrimp cocktail. It's fresh, served cold, and hefty: Each shrimp is satisfyingly plump. I also enjoy their fries. It's perfectly crisp on the outside but soft and potato-ey on the inside. And if you know me, you know that my ideal fries are a combination of those two. If you come here for just the steak and the fries, you will be entirely satisfied. I'm afraid I've gotten ahead of myself. Each meal comes with a complimentary bread basket and crudité. Both are wonderful. The blue cheese dip that comes with the crudité is perfectly funky and not at all too overpowering - and that's coming from someone who doesn't like blue cheese! We had dinner at Keens Steakhouse after hearing a lot of great things from locals, and overall, it was a really enjoyable experience. The place has that classic New York charm dim lighting, wood-paneled walls, and a warm, old-school steakhouse atmosphere that feels like stepping back in time. It did have a bit too much dressing for my wife's liking (I didn't mind it), but overall, it hit the spot. For the main course, we ordered the surf and turf with sides of mushrooms and a baked potato. The steak was good definitely above average but the lobster completely stole the show. It had this natural sweetness to it that was just incredible, probably one of the best lobsters I've ever had. The mushrooms were another must-order rich and full of flavor. The baked potato, though, was a little dry and could've used some olive oil and sea salt rubbed in for that perfect texture. The wine list was the only area that left me wanting a bit more. I wish they had a stronger selection of California and Napa wines, but they did have a Carmenere which you don't see very often and it was fantastic. We ended up having a few glasses and really enjoyed it. For dessert, we went with the cheesecake, and it was the perfect way to wrap things up creamy, smooth, and not overly sweet. One of the coolest parts of the restaurant is its history. They actually have a wall dedicated to Abraham Lincoln and even display the actual blood-stained playbill he was holding the night he was assassinated. Had an amazing dinner Saturday night at Keens! Usually love getting the porter house but tonight had their burger and fries and it was delicous. Served medium rare with nice goey cheese and perfectly fried fresh fries. Started the evening with the crab cakes and the calamari salad, perfect start of the evening. After walking all day and doing shopping, I decided to eat here. It wasn't too far from the hotel so it was a great choice. I found the bar area. The bar itself was 100% full. There is some bar seating along the back wall and one lonely table in a corner. I decided to sit at that solo table. There was a bar menu on the table. I've picked what I wanted to drink and walked up to the bar. I waited for the bartender to acknowledge me. He he took my drink order and said he would bring it to me. They brought me a drink and a full menu. I ordered my food and a glass of wine to go with my dinner. Food was phenomenal Service was so friendly even though it was packed and they were very busy I made friends with a nice person who wanted my table after I was done. We visited Keen's Steakhouse while in New York. The ambiance was pretty dark. There weren't many windows. The whole ceiling is decorated with the pipe collection of Albert Keen. The wood and even table remind me of an older time in history. Apparently, this place is full of history (a time where this was a restaurant for only men to go to before women fought in courts to be allowed in). This place is apparently famous for their mutton which they offer with a side of mint jelly. I am not a big fan of lamb so I found this dish very gammy tasting. The mint jelly was amazing on the side, however. The waiter was really nice and walked us through the entire menu. They gave us some fresh bread rolls for the table, as well as, carrots/cucumbers which were put on ice. I really like how it made it taste fresher. I also liked the dip it came with. The steak I ended up getting was the prime T bone steak. It was average at best. I really didn't get the hype with the steak. My boyfriend got the King Cut. It was so big but I really liked the sauce it came with. We ended the night with great dessert. While I didn't like the entrees, the desserts were amazing. We got the hot fudge sundae and New York cheese cake. I really liked how the sundae had nuts on top with a warm drizzle of chocolate. The New York cheese cake was so smooth. I don't think I have ever had cheese cake that went down so easily. Since it was my friends birthday, the waiter sent out her dessert with candles which was a really nice touch. read more
