Excellent simple, fresh lunch! We stopped in today after too long an absence and once again had excellent lunches - outstanding green chili on a hamburger, a BLT and homemade fries, all excellent. The coffee was very good, far superior to the only coffee shop open in early spring. It was one of the very few places open this time of year, but worth visiting any time. So glad we yelped this! Family was craving burgers and the first burger restaurant we saw was high noon burger, their reviews were so poor and saw that Kendall Mountain Cafe had way better reviews. We decided to eat there and although it was at the edge of town, it was worth it! Their food was great! Burgers were 1/2 a pound of beef. Friendly place, but they need some changes. I got a coffee to go and they put it in a styrofoam cup. This doesn't break down in the environment-ever. It also leeches chemicals into the coffee. I drank a few sips- typical diner coffee. Luckily there is a better option in town. read more

From reading the reviews, this place has most likely changed owners. My husband and I were looking for a quick lunch and found this place on our way to Ouray. We mainly were interested b/c of the picnic tables outside and were looking for a place for our 2 year old son to let off some steam from sitting in the car. We walked in the place and there was not one person in there except for a waiter talking to a friend. We glanced at the menu (all american - frito pie, hamburgers, chili) and were not impressed, but the outside area lured us and we were hungry. The waiter had walked outside at this point and a woman came in and took our order. As we were ordering, our son had found an old desk table for children - like one you would see in Little House on the Prarie - there between some of the tables. He sat down at it (it was just his size) and started playing with a plastic apple that was on the table. Let me be very clear about this: This apple was broken, and was a dime store piece of s*&%. I am not kidding when I say a real apple is worth more than this thing. It was already broken and was just laying there on this desk. He (being 2) was interested in it and started playing with it. We wanted to go outside and decided to just let him take it with him. Anyone who has a 2 year old knows that the choice in letting him play with a 10 cent broken thing or making him put it down and come outside with us is a no-brainer. So we go outside with this thing and sit at one of the picnic tables and the woman comes out with our drinks. As she puts them on the table I ask if they have a high-chair. She says no, rudely, and then I say that I thought I had seen one inside. Then she says, again rudely, yes, we have one you attach to a picnic table and then just explodes at us! She starts berating us about taking the apple outside w/o asking and how rude we were and that the desk inside was an antique and I said, I didn't realize the apple was an antique and then she got really pissy with us. I told her that I was sorry and that we weren't planning on taking the apple, we were just letting him play with it and she is just flipping out on us! At that point, my husband says, let's just pay and go and she grabs the drinks back and screams at us to leave. I am not kidding when I say I have NEVER IN MY LIFE been treated like that in a restaurant or any place were I was the customer. It would have been one thing had she said, hey, you took the apple, that was rude, please give it back, but this woman EXPLODED at us like we had killed her cat. So, I can't review the food, but I can say, the customer service not only sucks but is downright scary. read more

My favorite place in town for breakfast. I don't know why because it has changed hands so many times in the last 13 years that I have lost count. The menu is super simple and at this time it isn't even printed up.. just listed on a white board. There isn't a lot of pretense to this place, I get the impression that this restaurant caters more to the locals rather then tourist so that was nice. The food is well prepared and very tasty. The service is great, the meal was served promptly and by a very welcoming gentleman. read more

Grandma & I took three kids here (ages 12, 13, 16) for lunch on a midweek late-June afternoon. We've been taking our grandkids on a summer trip around our beautiful state for the past several years. We go to a lot of different restaurants, and share our strong opinions. We stopped in here for a late lunch while in Silverton, and at first were a little concerned because of the empty dining room. The 5 of us had reubens and the philly cheese steaks. The waitress/proprietor was friendly, and the food was unhealthy (as expected), and delicious (as hoped for)! We were all in agreement. It is a small menu, beverage choices are limited - no beer or alcohol, but on our next time through this part of the state, we'll be back for more. Great place. Just walk in and enjoy. It may take a minute but just relax. Great food and the green chile sauce is perfect.

Maybe it was the soaked, soggy, gloppy untoasted bun, lying limp under the highly-well-done (not medium rare) open-faced green chili angus beef burger complete with gristle I had to fish from between my teeth. (Too bad, really, since the green chili was tasty and this might have been the basis of a successful dish with a little more care.). Maybe this was just an unfortunate choice of menu item? But then, the curled fries were chewy rather than anywhere near crisp as had been promised (though they looked deeply browned, so someone at least tried but lacked technique). Perhaps I was put off by the clean-where-it-counted but icky lavatory (see pictures) with a seat that didn't fit the bowl and a dirty mopping cart stored in the corner. Or the peeling dated wallpaper with mismatched, nothing-original pics of fish and prints-of-poker-playing dogs, and a Sysco Systems cutting board in the shape of New Mexico (?) on the walls. Or disappointed by the lack of any view at all of the gorgeous nearby mountains (hardly necessary, but too bad considering the town's setting.) Still, the service was friendly (which counts for a lot) and the price cheap (which seriously deserves a point in a tourist town). Look, I love a hole-in-the-wall with good food, but this just wasn't it. At least, not today, or not this dish. The strength of other reviews brought us here, but it didn't live up to them, sadly. read more

This is a great little family run cafe!! On our drive down the Million Dollar Hwy from Montrose, hungry for some lunch, we passed the sign entering Silverton that said "Brown Bear Cafe to the left " and we just kept on going...to the end of the Main Street until we stumbled upon this little treasure. Located in an unassuming little cottage style front, looked to be about 15 tables at the most inside with simple decor. It was noticeably clean (and the bathroom was VERY clean). The waiter who greeted us was super friendly and helpful, making some thoughtful suggestions. The menu selection is small, about 7-8 choices for sandwiches only. No salads or healthy lunch options here. Burgers, BLT's, Rubens... I ordered the Ruben (which I never do , but the corned beef was advertised as made in house). I may never order another Ruben again because all others may fail to compare to this one! The large portion of meat was so juicy and tender with plenty of flavor, but not too salty. The sauerkraut was slightly crunchy and pickled just right. The rye bead was nicely buttered and toasted. The thousand island dressing was homemade for sure. The side of potato salad was very good. I like that it wasn't over salted or too much mayo mixes in. My husband ordered the BLT. It was very good. They were very generous with the thick slabs of crispy bacon. He choose the ranch style pinto beans as a side. Quite tasty with just a little bit of heat to give them a kick. We ordered two iced teas and the total bill came to $22.07. Very reasonable for quality homemade food, cooked to order and great service. read more

The food here is not flashy or fancy. It is just fantastic. I've had a lot of French toast in my life and this was the best. It's a family recipe! I also ordered a side of potatoes and even those were amazing. Potatoes are already delicious on their own, but they somehow made them even better. My husband had the breakfast sandwich and said, "I wish all breakfast sandwiches tasted like this.". The inside is warm and cozy like a living room. I hope to be back someday! read more

The waitress was handling all tables, seating customers and cashing out but our coffee/water cups were always full and we felt completely attended to.
