This is a great NJ diner for breakfast. I had the 3 meat and cheese omelet with a side of sausage links. It was very good. The eggs were cooked perfectly and the omelet was filled with plenty of meat and cheese. The sausage was good as well. Service here was great. Every time that my coffee cup was dry, the server was right there to fill it up. The coffee was good and hot. I was with a few friends, and we were not rushed in any way, and they made us feel welcome. The bottom line, this is a great place for breakfast, and when in the area I will return. read more

Even the dust dancing in the intense sunlight energized by passing through the huge plate glass windows in the front of the Key City Diner yells, "1954 !" That was the year this classic Jersey stainless steel diner was shipped to and erected on this hillock above Route 22 in Phillipsburg, NJ. While the glare and fading caused by El Sol has taken its toll on this old gal, so has it captured the essence of all the people who have passed this way for grub and coffee over these 60+ years. And, if you sit in the dining room off to the side with all the seniors who have come here daily to meet friends and age gracefully over politics and medical conditions, the point is driven home that there is something magically special about this joint. It is palpable in the air and people's aura. This place just might be haunted, in a good way. Definitely felt like the movie, Cocoon. But, besides that, Key City gave us a very enjoyable breakfast. Our Phillipsburg Omelet was a three egg wonder, loaded with onions, peppers, potatoes, sausage and cheese. It was very good. If they had subbed Feta for the Cheese Wiz, it might have been perfect. Not that more calories were desired, but the home fries were excellent. The chef had them crisping on the hot iron so long that the underside of the taters had joined together as a unified layer of crunch, while the rest of the mass was mixed with onions and peppers and enough grease to provide great flavor. We stopped by last week for brunch but ended up leaving. Our outdoor table was dirty so we told the waitress. She came back with a dry rag and brushed the table off into our laps. She then proceeded to tidy the table that had just left behind us. She put that tables creamers and sugar packets in the middle of our table. We are in the midst of a pandemic and these are not cleaning standards on a normal day. Seeing as though we had been seated for about 15 minutes at this point with no other contact, we left. As we were leaving, we noticed they sat people at our table with no other cleaning. Just lax and inexcusable. There are many other good breakfast spots to choose from. Live locally and have only been here once before. Parking lot is always filled. Came for breakfast and we all had breakfast dishes. Omelette were good and so were the waffles. I would just say average at best. Nothing terribly horrible and nothing that was good enough to come back for. Stopped here on the way home from a disappointing foliage trip. A week too early for the beautiful colors but glad we found this classic gem. Friendly servers and meal was great. The Mrs had eggs, French toast with scrapple. Most places under cook the scrapple but they nailed it here. We were so pleasantly surprised when we stumbled upon this road side, "50s styled," classic American diner. The service was very attentive without being overbearing, the food came out quickly and was delish, and the menu was exactly what you want from a diner (extensive). The only Jersey diner you will ever need. The inside is dated, but clean. Servers are pleasant, and if you're lucky, you might even get called 'Hon.' I can't really vouch for lunch/dinner, but breakfast is DELICIOUS! Great diner coffee, strong like it should be! They have all your favorite breakfast fare, the pork roll is great, and I love the home fries too. They also have a wide variety of desserts (mostly pies). Came across this diner while on the way to Crayola Factory from NY. We ordered breakfast and it was a great breakfast indeed. Large portions, real huge sausage links and white fresh whipped butter on the side and on our toast. Not used to this since when I order breakfast in a NY diner I get a small portioned and at times poorly cooked meals. The home fries were fresh and crispy just bland bc they had no onions cooked with them. Very pleased with breakfast :). I will now have to skip all my meals for the day however. read more

Key City is one of our favorite localish late night 24 hour hangouts. The food is usually pretty good, the service is always pretty quick. It's a great place to stop when you're heading back to the Valley after an evening in the city. I have met a lot of interesting people here and heard some really cool stories/local legends. Waitress was annoyed that we had a large group, mumbled about "just loving her job" sarcastically as she walked away and refused to split our bill as requested from the beginning. Said they don't have an electronic system to split the bill only paper. I've been to other establishments that accommodate by writing each bill up separately as they take everyone's order. We're all about finding new places to try during the summer. Key City isn't exactly new. But I had not been in the door in twenty to thirty years. So my son, dad and I stopped in last week after a hike around Merrill Creek Reservoir. The place looks like it hasn't been updated since the fifties. Didn't matter to me. We snagged a back booth. Food came out quickly. Excellent corned beef hash and eggs, bacon omelette and chicken and fries. Great coffee in a tiny cup. Couldn't ask for more. Except of course, more coffee. Friendly, knowledgeable waitress, atypical of a diner. She was willing to say what she recommended, and did not recommend. The burger was better than expected, and I liked that I could substitute for their deluxe fries. They recently introduced deluxe fries - pizza fries, vodka fries, and a Greek wrap sauce fry. The fries are new, and there is room for improvement. The cheese on all of the fries should be melted on to prevent it from sliding and to seal in flavor. Lots of choices... read more

It is the go to diner in the immediate area. The diner standards are fair. They won't poison you. Tuna sandwich, french fries at 3am. Eggs, hashbrowns and bacon. It's fine Dinner time, their chicken piccata is actually pretty good if it is on the menu that day. The salad bar is fair and usually has two soup choices. In fact the soup is probably the best thing about this place as they have some very hearty choices that are well made on premises. I truly like the beef barley. Very tasty. They TRULY should have this open late night because a nice hot bowl of soup, a little salad and some rye bread with butter would really hit the spot at 3am. Lunch. not my favorite burger here but some of the sandwiches are good. I like their tuna, as I mentioned earlier. Kind of interesting choices of different kinds of fries [disco fries, etc]. Six or so in total, but they are all based on those fries they spray with a starchy substance so they fry up crisper. I prefer my fries thick cut, with skin on if possible, and no funny business sprayed on them. Perfectly edible, clean, place. Just not special other than it is open 24 hours and it is about the only place that is. At 3am your choices around here are White Castle, McDonald's and the Key City Diner and that is it. read more

I love Key City! Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, 2am. I love it. Mind you, I have only ever ordered breakfast when I go. So that's all I can speak to. Portions are perfect, maybe even a little much. Everything has always been cooked as requested. Service differs. Breakfast time servers are generally more pleased to see you than the 2am ones. I can't blame them though, at 2am who knows what type of person you will be serving. It's just frustrating that they treat you the same sober at that time as they would someone who is drunk and a bit disorderly. Locally this is the only diner I will go to! Tip? Order the Disco Fries. This place is horrible. If I could give less than one star I would. To start my husband got coffee and on the spoon that was already in his coffee was some kind of dried on food. We sent it back and got a new one but that already put a bad taste in my mouth. Then when I got my pancakes the texture was weird they were thick and crunchy and again I food another piece of stuck on food on my pancake which is weird because well I only ordered pancakes! This is a great place to go if you're in the area and its three in the morning. The breakfast items are great, but everything else, eh, not so much. The service is spotty, I understand if it's late, but when there are two waitress and two tables in the while place, you'd think they would be on that, but they are over by the register texting. I had the pleasure of coming here tonight after telling my mom who is visiting how good the food and service is here and that she wouldn't regret this place. I could not have been more wrong about this place. We were seated promptly but after waiting for approximately 15 minutes with about five waitresses standing by the counter, we observed another patron come in, get seated promptly and was immediately asked what he wanted to drink before someone asked what we wanted. After another 15 minutes of waiting, the same patron that was seated after us was asked what he wanted to order and STILL no one came over to us. We got fed up and decided to pay for the drinks we ordered and they didn't even bother to ask if there was a problem. The food is alright, but service isn't that good. Some of the servers are sweet, but most of them seem to be really annoyed. It was like a rush to. There was this elderly woman, who really wasn't nice at all. i smiled at her, she didn't smile back. she "asked" my friend to leave just because she had flip flops. She was very mean and basically forced us out. Right when she was going to use the bathroom. Should have at least let her use the bathroom before she pissed her. I highly don't recommend this as the best diner. I highly recommend Red Rose Diner down the highway. It's way better. The service, the employees, and the set up. Run away from this place don't walk. Although the eggs Benedict was fairly good the potatoes served ice cold. The initial cup of coffee was lukewarm at best. The refill, one and only refill was much better. Service is substandard, if you want a coffee to go they charge you over two dollars even though you had coffee for breakfast and it was only filled twice which they've already charged you over two dollars for. I travel this country for my job and have never had this happen. I am quite out raged! I made, comment to not only the waitress but the rude lady at the cash register.
