I only come to this Key Food after hitting the produce stand across the street to round out my shopping trip with anything I need that they don't have. As a supplemental grocery store to the pantheon of produce, it's a fine grocery store. It's clean and well stocked, and everything in the store is fresh and non expired. The prices are a bit higher than what you'd get elsewhere (I'd recommend Food Bazaar over this), but you're really paying for proximity and convenience when shopping here. One area where I think this store lacks is prepared food. They have a few pastas and chicken options but other than that it's pretty limited. I also think their bread options could be better -- they do have a bakery but I struggle to find sourdough options at this location. Service here is fine and friendly, I've never had a problem during check out or ordering from the deli here. Overall, a decent grocery store when you're in a pinch. read more

This key food is clean and big and cool w AC in the heat of summer. There is also a nice flower section (see pics). There are self service registers to check out and pay and also human staff to check you out. Except there was a cashier who got paranoid and upset w me for taking pics of this store for my google review and I told her it was for a review. I usually always try to respect people's privacy and try to take pics of the place and no faces that are recognizable and also color their faces if I happen to get a face in there. So besides that it was a good experience and there were a lot of nice sale items like salmon, Terra chips for $3.99, and jarlsberg cheese $6.99/pound). The fruit and veges appeared fresh and the aisles were organized. And the outside facade was nice too and modern. read more

If I can give 0 stars I would. The security guard one so unprofessional & rude. He proceeded to PUT HANDS on my sister personal stuff. He said he needs to check her stuff because she took something. Even though we didn't take anything! We was making a purchase while my sister was getting stop at the entrance, who in their right mind has the right to put their hands on other people's stuff. Meanwhile people, we're going in and out and no one else was getting checked how my sister was HARRASED. I don't know if the security choose on my sister because of how she look her skin color or what but we specifically got targeted. If you ever decide to shop her get ready to be assaulted or harassed! I bought two small boneless rib roasts at this store for Christmas for $9.99 per pound. I usually buy bone in, but they did not have any. For the previous 4 Christmases I have purchased my roasts at this store, so I felt confident. I spent approximately $60 for the roasts. On Christmas day, I cooked the roasts as usual. They were the toughest, most juiceless roasts I have ever bought. They were awful!! I had to throw them away. My family would not eat the meat. When I complained on line to the company, they did not even respond. Is this what they call customer service? I am very disappointed in this store and of course, will never buy meat there again. A new market will be opening in my neighborhood shortly, so I will have no reason to shop at Key Food any longer. read more

Whenever I stay in Astoria this Key Food is one of the grocery stores I hit up every time. While the store is very large it's easy to navigate and each of the aisles are clearly labeled. I appreciate how friendly and helpful the staff are and I know I can ask them for assistance with confidence. As a vegan it'd be terrific if this Key Food added more vegan and plant-based options to the prepared food, cold cases, and freezer sections. This store is nothing special. Not that I'm a prude, but when I hear three employees in different parts of the store cussing and talking about getting high while working, I'm not inclined to seek assistance from them if need be. Furthermore when the cashier os so involved in his conversation with the cashier in the next lane without acknowledging the customer throughout the entire transaction, I'm not inclined to ever come back. Me giving this place 3 stars isn't a bad thing but the fact that this place can't be a one stop shop is why it's not 4 stars. In addition, I'll never give any grocery star in NYC 5 stars coming from the suburbs (Big Y is king). I'd say I'm able to find 90% of the things I'm looking for but I definitely stop at United Brothers for fruits and veggies prior since they come in fresher and cheaper. They have a very good ethnic section and their selection of meats make me rarely have to go to the butcher. Just be warned, twice I've had to return something because one product was damaged and a SoyRizo I got from their organic section was expired. So definitely check your food. The staff were super friendly about it though. If you live in the area, you can't complain as this is way better than the Food Bazaars or Morton Williams I had to go to living in other areas of NYC. read more

I think the prices are too high, the produce is often inedible, and fruit is close to rotting. The store seems clean upstairs, but it is not. They've come a very long way... They are across the street from two very large fruit markets but their diverse produce section is very competitive and reasonably priced. For example, Hass avocados (for that perfect guac) were 3 for $5. At the fruit markets the same size Hass avocados were $1.99 each. Many other similar differences. The shelves are always neatly stacked and full. There's a new cheese and charcuterie section. I'm also very partial to their meat section because they offer USDA "choice" grade meats (Choice is one step below USDA "prime" - Marbling (intramuscular fat) is the intermingling or dispersion of fat within the lean. Graders evaluate the amount and distribution of marbling in the ribeye muscle at the cut surface after the carcass has been ribbed between the 12th and 13th ribs. Degree of marbling is the primary determination of quality grade. And so endeth the lesson on meat grades.) I also love their long hours (open on some days until midnight. In a nutshell while Key Food on Newton and 33rd Street in Astoria isn't Whole Foods, it is one of the best independent market around. read more

Key Food on 30th Ave and Newtown seems to have a love hate relationship with Astoria. Some love the convenience and pricing. Others seem to detest the location as well as the name. Me, we have a friendly working relationship. I see you when I need you and your always there with what I need. Produce They seem to have everything I need and if I do not like what I see, I go across the street to United Brothers or Elliniki Agora. Everything seems fresh. Fruit and veggies firm with bright colors. No outdated product that I see. Fair pricing. Beer Large selection of international, domestic, craft and everyday beers. Probably a selection of 50 or so beers. Lots of specials. Installed a new frig to keep larger selection of beers cold. Yes I know their are other stores with larger selections, but I have no issues with the 15 or so beers I rotate in my purchases. Meat, Chicken, Fish Again bright, firm product here. Lots of choices and pricing is reasonable. I found the top round steaks at $2.99/lb. very cheap and quality is good. This is my go to steak for BBQ and very tender at medium cook temp. Bought some salmon steaks, outstanding. Bright pink, firm and was very happy after cooking. Ahi tuna looked very nice, but $14.99/lb (seems to be market price) a bit pricey. Deli Very standard. Nothing special, but again lots of deals. Roast beef always rare. Turkey selection 3 or 4 styles. Same with ham selection. Baked ham very good when it comes out fresh. Cheese selection also very standard. Nothing outrageous, just your basics. As you can see this Key Food is a very standard market with fair pricing. I know it is my go to store when I need the basics. When I need bulk items I go to Costco. Would I like a Whole Foods near by, YES, but I also like reasonable pricing. Being a member of this community I have the advantage of some of the best specialty stores in Queens. I have go to places for olives, cheese, bread, meats, but Key Food offers the convenience of shopping near by with lots of fair pricing. read more

You know what? For a Key Food Supermarket, this place is pretty top notch. I am here at least 3-4 times a week (one of the perks of NY...not being able to buy more than you can carry). But I don't mind going. I am a huge fan of the self-checkout, because I just like to do it myself. But most of the employees here are actually pretty friendly. There is even one woman that makes my husband laugh every time she checks us out. The deli employees are cordial and I even get a smile most of the time I stop there. They have a decent produce selection and things always look fresh here. If you're a Key Food card holder, you can truly get some great deals here. Even though I LOVE to cook, we occasionally get a rotisserie chicken because it's quick. We've never had an issue with it being dry. The prices are good, it's never a mess, and we are usually able to find everything we need. I wouldn't go back so often if I didn't mind being in there. Keep up the good work! read more

When I was a kid, every other week my parents took me shopping to our local Key foods but they ended up closing down by the time I was in my teens. Last week, I was looking for a deal and I was feeling nostalgic so. I found this key food in a neighborhood I normally visit. I decided to try it out However; I must say I was disappointed. Pros: Before getting into the cons, I would like to say the pros first. The aisles were small but fully stocked and very clean. The deli and fruit aisles had fresh food. I even found the worker nice and helpful. Its location's a block away from N/Q line. Cons: The store is kind of small so, the selection was limited. I had trouble finding some items, even items that were on sale. The store gets crowded quickly so, it's hard to move around in the small aisles. Then there's the prices, anything not on sale is very expensive. I don't mind paying for something if I need it and it it's reasonably priced. But it seemed like everything not on sale was marked up. The Trade fair a block away is a lot cheaper. In the end, I think it's a good store but only if you buy items that on are sale. However, if you're on a budget, try the Trade fair a block away. read more

This Key Foods is certainly cleaner than the one by Ditmars and definitely more so than the Trade Fair just down the street. Cleanliness when it comes to food is definitely a huge issue for many and I'm glad they get that here. Most of the staff I've seen who handle food whether directly or frozen etc all wear gloves and generally all that work here are friendly. Pricing is a bit spotty from time to time so the best thing to do is swing by the last frozen food isle to use the price checker to double check before checking out. Too bad they don't have that in all areas of the store. Fruits and vegetables are generally cheaper across the street, but then again that place is cash only. The new self-checkout line replaced a few of the registers and while some people like this, I find that the issues with self-checkout often mean it's faster to go through the regular checkout where the cashiers are experienced and can get you rung up, bagged and out the door faster. read more

This Key Food is somewhat organized, compared to the neighbor grocery stores in the area. This store could be convenient sometimes when you need stuff like half & half, a half gallon of milk, a pack of eggs or a 6-pack of beer, which Rite Aid next door always beats their prices. I guess if you don't like Trade Fair, you're pretty much stuck with Key Food for one stop grocery shopping. BTW, Euro Market still has the best beer selections in Astoria. Hands down. Would I do my weekly grocery shopping here? No! I'd rather drive or take M104 to Stop & Shop on 48th Street where it's less cluttered and has more selections of stuff. You know what? Pretty underwhelming with a poor selection of higher quality foods, especially when it comes to meats, seafood, or organic options. I keep going back because it's the biggest supermarket in walking distance but it's sort of a sad state of affairs overall. But then that's what most NYC supermarkets are like, anyway... That being said, the quality of fruit is actually higher (and the prices lower) than that of the big outdoors fruit & vegetable place across the street. Go figure. read more

Key Foods is kinda pricey but is probably worth it. I feel more confident shopping here than Trade Fair simply because it's cleaner. I've had bad experiences with the price not coming up as I expected. For example, one time, I saw in the weekly flyer that Edy's Ice Cream was on sale, so I went there to buy some, but it rang up as regular price. Unfortunately, I didn't have a copy of the flyer with me and they didn't have any so they couldn't look it up. Another time, these organic eggs were marked on sale with an in store sign, but rang up at regular price. The manager had to go over to confirm the price on the sign matched the item, then I had to get a refund for the difference. Why can't 30th Ave get a decent grocery store??? While Key Food might the best of what we have, it still leaves me wanting more. read more

This Key Food looks nicer than the other Key Food by Ditmars Blvd. Personally I've found the people working there to be nice and helpful. In terms of products and quality, they are about the same. The produce section is decent, but you could probably get better buys at the fruit stands across the street. However, they have a solid selection of staples. While waiting on line, I noticed that the woman behind me got sushi. She says it was good, but I have never tried it. There are also some decent Japanese restaurants on 30th Avenue. Unlike the Keyfood by Ditmars, this one has no parking, and it is on an intersection that is mostly crowded. If you live in the area, this is good place to shop. read more

THE market?? Supermarket heaven?? Really? Since when have my fellow Astoria neighbors become so complacent??!!! This place has crappy selection, bad customer service, and is overpriced. Their produce is probably left overs from the veggie and fruit stands across the street. The only things this place has going for it are its excellent location and the fact that (gulp) it offers a better shopping experience than Trade Fair. let's give key food in astoria some credit as its a supermarket that's stocks the basic supermarket items with a bunch of international flair like beer , snacks , water , etc. i needed to pick up a few goodies before heading back to manhattan and prices here are cheaper as well. it's not stop&shop or shoprite but i found my sugar free luigi italian ices, french mineral water and english licorice along with a few typical american snacks. i was able to roam every aisle freely as it's not that crowded on a tuesday evening and everyone is following the rules by wearing mask and social distancing. checkout was quick and i did save a few bucks.key food serves a purpose for folks in astoria and that includes me . read more

I go to Key Food for some of the basics (produce, dairy, occasionally the frozen section), and I shop their sales. I regularly shop at all the markets and stores nearby (Trade Fair, Sai Organics, United Bros., Euro Mart, Rite Aid) and also hit up Trader Joe's in the city to get all the various products our little household requires to get by. We are very health conscious, have a gluten allergy to consider, and like to keep ourselves on a budget, so we bounce around to find the best deals. This review is going to bounce around a lot, too. Bear with me - one of you will thank me for this later. Organic Foods - Key Food is more expensive, I've found, and they have a meager selection of these healthy options. Lunchmeats (Applegate brand) are more expensive by about a dollar or two. I usually just go to TJs for veggies and fruits and other organics because their prices are better. Sai is my local go-to though. They may be similarly priced to Key Food, but at least it's going to a mom and pop place instead of a chain. Non-Organic Produce - I compare Key Food and United Bros. and go for the cheaper, fresher selection. Key Food is usually good for bananas, avocados, and such. United is better for herbs. For Bob's Red Mill products, Trade Fair has the best selection and prices. The tea selection at Key Food is depressing. Try Trade Fair (Yogi Tea is cheaper here), Sai Organics, or somewhere else entirely for a quality selection of teas (no loose leaf though.) Gluten Free breads - Key Food has them, but they are about a dollar or so more than everywhere else. I usually just buy them at TJs. Gluten Free Cereals - The stores are all the same. If there happens to be a price difference, it's mere cents. Key Foods selection is meh. Actually, they're all meh. Beer: #1 is Euro Mart, #2 is Key Food #3 is debatable. For paper goods and other household items, we mostly wait for sales at Key Food or Rite Aid. Key Food keeps moving their produce section around - and the changes have been for the better. The new layout makes more sense and has a better flow to it. As for customer service - good luck getting a smile or hello out of any of the cashiers, but a few of the stock clerks are friendly fellas. They'll help you out without hesitation, and give you a nice smile, too. I really hope all this random info helps somebody new to the neighborhood out. read more

Why would this particular Key Food warrant a review? Only because I was impressed by their beer selection. I've been here a couple times to satisfy my weekly grocery needs but one night, I really needed a six pack. I was expecting to pick up a Bass which is your standard beer you can pick up in any supermarket but was surprised to find a Radeberger. Granted, it does not come from the tap but was pretty excited to be able to haul a couple home and have them in the fridge just in case I have one of those weeks. Nothing is as sweet as having a Radeberger handy. Then on another day on the whim, I was planning to pick up a couple items for my weekly grocery run and stopped by the beer section. It was a Monday night so they were fully stocked and was surprised to find a Leffe Blonde six pack! That's also one of my favorite drinks and was smiling giddily that I can take them home until I realized that when I turned around, there's a whole selection of Czech, German, and Belgium beer teasing me from the shelves. Dammit! Of course I pore over the selections: The Belgium Trifecta: Chimay Bleue: Grande Reserva, Chimay Rouge, and Chimay Doree. I saw Dortmunder, Schneider Weisse,Bitburger (German). Above sat the Lindemans Framboise and Peche and below were the Abites. These were wonderful selections to choose from and for a moment I wavered and wanted to take home the Lindeman's but decided the Leffe Blonde would be a perfect choice tonight. I couldn't believe the selection and with the summer around the corner, this would be my go to spot to pick up some beer and chill with some friends on the rooftop. read more

This is my favorite grocery store in the area. It's clean, spacious, and there's actually employees around that you can ask for help. They have so many seafood options, and they also have meals already prepared for cheap. I bought the roast chicken tonight for just 3 dollars and it was pretty good. I don't understand why people make a long line for the check out machines when the line for the regular check out is so much shorter and probably faster. I always have an issue with their check out machines and always need assistance which slows down the process. I go here because, like the other reviewers, it is close to my apartment. Key Food is a moderately organized grocery store. Those who are used to Wegmans or other super-duper-grocery-ramas in various regions of the country will find the selection to be lacking. But they're not bad, and they have some pretty good beers. There is a skinny kid with glasses who works the checkout lanes, and he is quiet and surly, but really fast and accurate with his checkout process. Quietly competent, if you will. My fiance and I refer to him as the "Key Food Ninja," because he is ten times better than most of their other checkers. But this review is not about the food or the service at Key Food. This is about what's important: The Music. This particular Key Food always plays the best music. It's kind of an eclectic mix of classic rock, soul, funk, etc. I was in there tonight and heard "Spill the Wine" by War, which always reminds me of Boogie Nights. Sometimes, something danceable comes on, like a disco hit. Or something that gives a fella a chance to break out the falsetto, like "Blue Bayou." I have XM Sirius Radio, and the jams are only half as good as the ones in Key Food. I never hear station identifications, so I assume they use a service like Muzak which isn't available to the home user. I like to think of this place as a great music venue where you happen to be able to buy groceries. read more

Let me tell you, I can almost find everything I need and it doesn't require double-checking to determine if the produce is expired. However, such a convenience does come at a higher price in comparison to the produce across the street or Trade Fair. Environment: I felt every time I have been here, produce has been well stocked on a daily basis and the store very clean. Employees: The sense of customer service here is at a higher level, in comparison to the other groceries stores in the area. In particular, the deli section. The cute guy behind the counter realized I was there on a weekly basis purchasing honey turkey. This time around, he gave me a few slices to consume and said, "Because you are consistent customer." What gives him even more brownie points is the fact that I was starving. Yum, yum, yum! Produce: Always well stocked, I never leave without getting what I want and need. PROS -The aisles are big enough for two grown human beings to walk down without having to wait in line for the other to move (WHAT A CONCEPT) - It's usually easy to find what you are looking for - Self checkout is convenient if you only have a couple of items and don't want to wait on line. - Cashiers tend to be competent and can speak English CONS - The prices tend to be more expensive than Trade Scare - They charge for delivery - Not open 24-7 If you want a pleasant shopping experience and can afford to spend a few dollars more it is totally worth it. read more

This place is super-convenient for me. It's literally at the end of the block. And if I'm going to do a big grocery shopping, the last thing I want to do is lug two armloads of groceries all the way across town. As far as standard grocery stores go, Key Foods pretty much has it all. I know Peter says it's pricey, but I feel the prices are pretty good. They have a limited ethnic foods section, which is kind of disappointing. There is a good selection of fruits and veggies, but I usually go across the street to United Bros. for my produce - more to choose from and muuuuuch cheaper. It makes me happy to look into their ice cream freezer. There are always have a ton of Ben and Jerry's flavors! Their veggie burger and fake chicken nugget selection is good too. The supermarket is always kept pretty clean, and the staff is friendly. Keyfoods can't offer the same selection and variety as a mega-supermarket, like Wegman's. And it doesn't have all the gourmet selections that you would find at a Whole Foods. But for my neighborhood grocery store, it's pretty darn good! read more

You'd think with the boat loads of money this Key Foods location rakes in every minute, they'd be able to spruce up the place a little more. Overall very boring inside, super cramped, over priced on TON of things, and not enough food options. Avoid at all costs during the rush hours. There is literally no room to walk around or at check out. Not nearly enough registers for such an influx of people. Those checkout lines then easily block the isles. They're open till midnight which is nice for a last minute beer or snack food run, but Rite Aid across the street is open 24 hours. The Rite aid is also cheaper for beer and snacks surprisingly, when it should be the other way around. My biggest problem with this location is that the meat and seafood section is horrible. They always seem to be out of things and carry very little in stock. The seafood section for example, carries about 4 packets of salmon. Four. Even so, it doesn't look all that fresh/high in quality in the end. I understand the lack of space, but I'd rather see more seafood/meat options then the gigantic refrigerated cheese section in the middle of it all. read more

I'm giving the store five stars because they have the best beer selection of any grocery store I've been to in this neighborhood and its CHEAP for NYC. I'm from VA where a 12pk will never cost more than $16 (and that's highway robbery), but this place actually has good, local and imported beer. I think this store has improved a lot. However, what I find a bit annoying is the lack of consistency. They'll sell a product (e.g., spinach pie, precooked flounder) for a while and then all of a sudden they don't sell it for a few weeks. Then they start selling it again and hide it in another area of the store. Then a few weeks later they don't have it again. I wish they were a bit more consistent in what they sell because I'm a single guy who doesn't cook and when they mess with their selection they mess with my meals (as I have a very limited selection of what I purchase and "cook" for myself!). This place is also very expensive. I can't believe they just charged me $7 for a tiny container of blueberries. Not cool. read more

This is the best Key Food location in Queens. I trek here from Long Island City when I don't want to venture into Manhattan. First, this location is only 2 blocks from the 30th ave train, and across the street from TWO fruit & veggie markets - so you can easily get everything you need at once. I can always find the name brand products I am looking for, and they have good weekly sales. Make sure you sign up for a shoppers club card in order to get the discounts. If you happen to misplace it (like I do) they will gladly give you another one. Second, this is one of the only key foods with ROTISSERIE CHICKEN. And it's always fresh. Third, do you need to buy a large quantity of food? delivery is $4.95. That is cheaper than using your metro-card. read more
