i decided to get some sushi in danville, and the Dragon Roll was the one to try today. kibo sushi is a small, yet live establishment with some great sushi to order from. it was a nice experience today

First time here as a local in Danville, and went on a Friday night that is super busy, with at least four tables reserved (no one sitting), with tables full of patrons, and appeared to be either behind in service already, with 2 servers and 2 sushi chefs. We got seated within 5 minutes, and our order was taken after 15 minutes, and our order came 30+ minutes later. More people came and were willing to wait, so we thought we will give it a try, despite the wait. Ordered Cali roll, dragon roll (which in my opinion was a small serving/with smaller cut rolls) and we ordered with real crab too, which is an additional $4. Had the chirashi, and also seemed like a smaller serving of fish compared to the norm around the area. For the price (and I get inflation), we expected more for the buck.

Sadly another mediocre sushi restaurant in the area. The agedashi tofu was very hard and rubbery and tasted exceptionally fishy. The spicy tuna in the kibo roll tasted rancid. The tempura shrimp roll had LOTs of salad in it; very odd. Not on the repeat list.

I ordered takeout after a long tournament down the street at San Ramon Valley High School. Based on the great reviews snd location, I decided to give it a try. I ordered 2 rolls, rainbow roll and a special roll they made me since they do not have cherry blossom or orange blossom rolls. I also got an 8 piece sashimi (tuna/salmon) and salmon teriyaki. When I picked up the food the total was $100 and change. I noticed the 8 piece sashimi was $35 and thought, damn thats expensive! Anyhow once I unpacked everything we were ready to eat. Rolls were pretty good but on the smaller side. Sashimi was thick cut and good as well. The salmon teriyaki the hubs said was okay, so I am guessing nothing special. He had to scoop off the pickled radish on top and pour the sauce before eating. Overall a good place if craving Japanese in the area but nothing that would compel me to return.

A tiny hole-in-the-wall sushi spot for your sushi cravings. We took my boyfriend's parents to eat sushi, and it was surprisingly good! ***What we ordered **Hotate (Scallop) & Hamachi Nigiri (10/10) ~ The quality of the nigiri is fantastic. The Hamachi was fatty, and it melts in your mouth. It doesn't leave a weird fishy aftertaste. The hotate was delicious; it was so soft and flavorful I would highly recommend you try it! **Butterfly roll (8/10) ~ This came with Unagi, avocado, tempura crunch, and cucumber. This roll wasn't too bad! I wasn't sure if they added the cucumber inside because I couldn't feel the crunch texture while eating the roll. But, this was pretty good! **Kibo Roll (9/10) The Kibo roll came with tuna tartar, tempura shrimp, salmon, red onion, microgreens, and black tobiko! This roll had a nice kick to it! You wouldn't think it's spicy, but it is. The roll is super flavorful! I'd probably get it again. **I don't know Roll (10/10) For $21, the chef will create a roll for you, and it was AMAZING. I'm not sure what was inside; I think it was crab, shrimp tempura, and spicy ahi? But the sweet purée they dressed the roll with on the side made the roll 10000x better! I would get this again!!! Overall, The staff was friendly, the food came out fast, and everything tasted delicious! If I happen to be in Danville again, I would not mind coming back!

Fish is fresh and I also like the miso soup. However, fired tofu is not crunchy at all. :(

Can't say how Taru sushi's quality is but I'd love to try next time. I ordered their $34 combo chicken Katsu that comes with a bowl of udon (or you can choose soba), corn salad, cabbage salad, and rice. The portion size was just right for my daughter and myself that we ate literally everything and satisfactorily full. It is the best katsu I have had so far in my many katsu experiences. It is light, fluffy, crispy while juicy at the same time and the dipping sauce is just right. Next time I'd love to try their pork katsu. Every table tonight ordered katsu as what I observed. No wonder their katsu is featured at SF chronicle (that is how I found this place). Would love to visit again and take a drive.

For two adults and a seven year old child, we ordered a tempura udon, an edamame, a dragon roll, a tataki roll, 8 pieces of salmon sashimi, an order of toro nigiri, and an order of hamachi nigiri. Prices might seem a little high, but the quality and quantity of the food made up for it. The sashimi cut was extremely generous, each piece was more than half an inch thick. And instead of 8 pieces, we were given nine! And for the toro nigiri, instead of two pieces we were given three plus a small piece of sashimi. The hamachi nigiri was also really nice and big with a small amount of rice. Fish was really fresh and of high quality. The tempura udon came with a large plate of tempura. Besides two pieces of shrimps, there were yam, onion, eggplant, broccoli, green bean, and kabocha. There were also these fried tofu puffs in the noodles. The soup was slightly salty. The two rolls were both very tasty. Service was good especially because we were given extra food! Too bad I forgot to take pictures until we were almost done. I do recommend Taru Japanese Sushi & Cuisine.

The restaurant has a homey vibe to it where it appears to be managed by family members and most customers are repeat. The food here is top notch fresh and they are very generous about their portions. They have HUGE sashimi portions (almost double the size of the typical competitors) and their hand rolls are the size of an extra large ice cream cone. Still they are packed with flavor and made with care. Their shrimp and vegetable tempura was done perfectly (not too greasy nor too much breading), and their amaebi (fresh sweet shrimp) is a must try if you're a shrimp-a-holic. The shrimp head was lightly fried without much breading. Their hand roll is a must try (it's the first hand roll on their menu in the hand roll section) as it's a combination of the various fresh fish including uni (there's a mint leaf to give the hand roll a fresh clean taste). They had one server and one helper but they're very friendly and will take the time to talk with you. A definite spot to hit if you have a light night sushi craving.

During our first visit, we were celebrating my birthday, and the staff surprised us with a scoop of ice cream and a candle, which we appreciated. We later noticed it was added to our bill, so we were a little surprised since we had assumed it was a complimentary birthday dessert..we would have preferred being informed there would be an additional charge. Today, the food was still good overall, but a few dishes were slightly off. The green beans were a bit undercooked compared to our last visit, and the mushroom karaage tasted a little powdery to me. Neither issue was significant enough to mention during the meal. Aside from the food, our server, Joel, was great! Friendly, attentive, and welcoming. It seemed like he may have been the only server working that evening, so he was constantly busy, but he still provided excellent service. Since we ordered a lot of food for just the two of us, he pushed another table over so we'd have enough space, which we really appreciated. At the end of the meal, we had leftovers, including almost an entire spicy tuna roll since it was one of the last dishes to arrive. Another server packed up our leftovers, including the mushroom karaage. Unfortunately, when we got home, we realized the spicy tuna roll was missing from the bag. Overall, we still enjoyed our visit and appreciate the great service from Joel. We were just a little disappointed by a couple of the dishes and the missing leftover.
